Hmm, I kind of like being a WV redneck, hillbilly, y'all just go ahead and be whatever you want. Most folk around here are democrats, but of a conservative nature. Before FDR the democratic party was conservative, he gave us 'change', a 'New Deal', a 'chicken in every pot', and welfare, along with liberalism. Most of us, here in WV believe a hand up is better than a hand out. That everyone should have the opportunity to earn the 'chicken in every pot', just don't take my chicken away and give it to someone who isn't willing to earn it. Al Gore screwed up here, he told coal miners he wanted to do away with fossil fuel, churches that he supported abortion rights, and everyone else that he wanted to take away their guns, politically, I don't see anything else he could have done to damage himself more. Had Al Gore carried WV, Florida wouldn't have been an issue.

Al Gore was just what WV and the rest of the country needed - someone with half a brain.

Fossil fuels are finite, filthy and unfeasible for a better future. Coal is still going to be mined, but it ranks us with backward China if that's seen as the "best" answer to powering our electricity, etc. It puts us back in time and keeps us from moving ahead - I guess that's okay for the majority of hicks in America.

Al Gore would have been a great president - what a pity we opted instead for Mr. Dufus, the Bush coup d'etat in 2000 and then again in backwoods Ohio in 2004. Man, we have really set our sights too low and our expectations to mediocrity at best. Bite the bullet and be progressive so we can move forward rather than slipping backward pandering to the idiots who live in this stupid country.

This article has attracted all the Hick GOP like flies to sh...t - "willnotvoteobama" is very scared that Obama might actually win, thus all the slanderous posts below. Scary that there are people like this still living in our country - you'd think they'd all be dead by now as part of a much earlier generation. Today's newer generations don't see things in the same light. Wow, this is like a throwback to segregation days - he reminds me of a small-town white racist baiting people who think more liberally (translation: who are better educated, more intelligent and broad-minded, maybe who have traveled outside the 50-mile radius of their home towns and actually learned something)....

  • Posted By: notroubleatall1963 @ 07/04/2008 11:06:47 AM

It's scary how we all think of ourselves as "the greatest nation on earth" and yet we allow poverty, ignorance and lack of opportunity to prevail for many millions of our own people. What kind of system is that? Is it wrong to want to improve things for the masses? I don't think so. Does our political parade achieve this? I don't know. It hasn't achieved much in the past 8 years except spending 9 trillion and start a pointless war in a country we could never hope to "win"... The British tried and failed during the peak of their empire days, and they had a lot more intelligent thinkers than we seem to - at least they spoke the languages of the Desert.

I think the vast majority of America is hick, under-educated and backward. Too bad we have to suffer their prejudices, fanaticism for Nazi policy and other indignities - and they seem to hold so much "sway" in all our elections. We've been getting dumber and dumber as a nation, and increasingly arrogant, so it's no wonder we can no longer sustain a leadership role in the world - if McCain is elected for all the wrong reasons, it will be the definitive decline and fall of the USA.

The casual bigotry of your page 40 headline reinforces the observation that Appalachian people are the last ethnic group safe to make fun of, but it was shocking to see such callous ignorance displayed in a national magazine. Now let's try to picture Newsweek coming up with a similar headline describing African-American voters as: a) insert racial slur; b) insert racial slur; c) insert racial slur. No, I don't think that's going to happen. If political correctness forbids you from using ethnic slurs against one culture, that forbearance should apply to all cultures. Otherwise, you are not only bigots, you are cowardly bigots.

I am tired of having to explain to people that Appalachia is a place, not an economic condition, not a social class. Cities seem to be judged by their richest inhabitants and rural areas by their poorest-- which gives you a skewed version of both places. Here in Appalachia, we have universities, artists, museums, mansions, billionaires, rocket scientists, at least one Nobel Prize winner, and a lot of well-educated, hard-working middle class people who are tired of the condescension and ignorance about the state of their region.

    • Posted By: jimbo3800 @ 07/03/2008 4:52:19 PM

Nancy, may God bless you for the best post I have read here....well, maybe ever. You are right on the money. Newsweak's hypocrisy is palpable, given their strict adherence and promotion of modern day political correctness. But somehow, making fun of Appalachia and it's people is OK in their strange minds.

I have had the priviledge of spending much time, both business and pleasure, in WV and eastern TN. I consider it a paradise, and in no small part because of the wonderful and kind-hearted people who call it home.

Holy crap. Trying to decipher this drivel almost made my head explode. Can we report abuse of the English language? Racism was, and is to a lesser degree, a real problem in the United States. Only the most delusional of all can deny that, but I know of no oppressed group that has been able to rise up and succeed while blaming the oppressors and expecting their problems to be solved by others. A person, group, organization, race, or culture succeeds by adopting a true sense of personal responsibilty and it bettering itself from the inside, not from outside assistance. Blacks should call on blacks to do just that, just as Hispanics are currently doing in this country and how the Irish, Italian, etc. did decades ago.

Please that's not polictically correct to discuss spelling, grammar, or sentence structure. Only Libs want us to allow this crap and not comment.

I grew up in East Tennessee and received a very good secondary education there. I voluteered to serve in the U.S. Army in 1968 and served for 17 months in Viet Nam. I have a post graduate degree.

The people there are honest and keep their word. The mountains there are beautiful. Yes there is still poverty there. Look around you and you will also see it where you are.

I'm a independent politically. I'm white. Do you know who I will vote for? Obama.

Thank you for your service. Since you understand war and its horrors, how will a Flip-floper with a character that bends to all the winds and says anything to get elected. How can bambi deal the likes of the Iranians? Please answer concisely why you place any trust in this Obamation illusion? Especially since you are an independent and should be able to weigh both sides. May God bless America.

Wow, there are some crazy ideas and thoughts about West Virginia circulating. I grew up in southern WV and moved away when I got married. I moved south with my husband as he finished his enlistment in the military. I couldn't wait to come home. We have made a wonderful life for our family here and will only leave if one us must transfer due to our work I do not live in a one room shack in the middle of a hollow, but instead in a quiet subdivision where the homes were built and not brought in on wheels. There are backwoods roads that lead to places I have never been (or want to be), but from what I have seen, that is in any part of the country. I am currently halfway through a four year degree, and most of my co-workers already have their degrees. My husband and I work hard for everything we have, and we are very blessed in our lives. As for the racism comments, one of my closest friends is of different race from me, but we don't think of each other as "the white friend" or "the black friend". We have names, not colors, and we prefer to use those. It never mattered, never will. Racism exists EVERYWHERE, and is aimed at everyone at some point.

Bravo to you, Brandi2020!! Having visited 42 of our 50 states in my life, you are correct by my experience. Every one has places decent people don't belong, some more than others.
It has been my experience that most of the great lies of our time are prefaced with the word "THEY". A hobby of mine is to ask the speaker to name "THEM" from his/her personal experience, because I truly do enjoy watching ignorant people squirm. It helps me to remember when I occasionally slip into this lazy imitation of thinking, which I believe we are all prone to do.

        • Posted By: THE RAVEN @ 07/02/2008 3:38:00 PM

I'll say that Obama will be President to piss off those who say he won't. But in my heart I know he WON'T because this country is full of racist white Americans who wouldn't vote in Jesus for President. He's black, too, you know.

Hey RAVEN...hope all is well. Wait a minute. YOU ARE THE ONE who said a black man could never get elected POTUS. Change of mind? I think one can, but not Hussein Obama. He is a crook and a fraud.

HolyRoller has spent an inordinate amount of time fixating on rumor and innuendo. People who rattle off long lists of names as some kind of evidence are not doing their home work, they are simply spouting off and it is up to those of us who prefer to deal in facts to get those facts out there.

      • Posted By: HappyDay41 @ 06/30/2008 6:46:26 PM

The list of names are FACTS.

        They are REAL PEOPLE.

A relationship between these people and Barry Sotero, er, I mean, Barry Obama, er, I mean, Barack Obama (NOT Barack Hussein Obama, II -- which is his real name on his birth certificate but isn't used because it sounds too "elitist") the relationships really existed, for decades, with some strange characters.

I know 'guilty by association' sucks, but it's true. If all my 'friends' and colleagues are mafia, criminal elements, prostitutes or drug pushers, you are going to make assumptions about my values.

We, as the American people, have every right to question why this guy (BO) has a high ratio of questionable characters surrounding him?

  • Posted By: pissed-off @ 06/30/2008 2:13:19 PM

    • Posted By: Tracker500 @ 06/30/2008 2:41:19 PM

Hopefully, the next African-American presidential candidate will be qualified for the job, not just someone who has a good speech writer. Americans won't support the most liberal senator in the country, no matter what they tell the pollster. After November, it's back to the drawer board. The first black President will be someone who has been in the private sector, someone with executive experience and most likely will be from the Republican Party.

      • Posted By: metzlerd @ 07/02/2008 12:36:42 PM

Hopefully you won't spend so much time insulting him either.

  • Posted By: alexmaris @ 06/30/2008 2:21:03 PM

Some of the comments posted regrding this article are proof positive of just how ignorant some of our fellow citizens are of what it is like to be an appalachian hillbilly. For me, it like a white person tring to tell someone what it is like to be black. But as some of the greatest black leaders of this country have said in the past." You cannot know wha it is like to be black unless you are black." The same applies to people making comment about appalachhian hillbillies. , You cannot know uless you are one.

    • Posted By: metzlerd @ 07/02/2008 12:32:27 PM

Yep also true for Native Americans, Asians, Northerners, Southerners, Germans, Italians, Hispanic, Islanders, Japanese, Korean, Liberals, Conservatives, Independents, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Upper Class, Middle Class, Poor, a Geek, a Jock, a Soc, a drug addict, gay, straight, but most importantly you can not know what it is like for a shy young Conservative of German/French/Irish/English descent to be born in California and have to move in the 70's to another state where there is little sun, and you have to go through trials of finding out that all your candidates were wrong about the energy crisis, and never really cared about balancing the budget.

You guys don't know what it's like to be me, and my question is when we get done pigeon wholing everybody into their seperate groups, is anybody going to balance the budget and work on OUR economic problems. Now I know the price of gas is different in West Virginia than it is where I am, but chances are it's high. Their probably aren't as many West Virginians that have been killed in Iraq as people from my state, but there's probably been too many.

Hey I got an idea. How about we fix some of this stuff.

  • Posted By: techresmgt @ 06/30/2008 3:46:07 PM

No, we don't appreciate where YOU are going with this, it appears racist and socially unacceptable. The media seems to believe it's all a big joke to make racially charged and inappropriate comments about poor, Caucasian folks. Appalachia is not the only place in America one will find disadvantaged, disenfranchised, poor, without a hope in the world of getting help, Caucasian people. There is no such thing as 'reverse racism'; racism is racism; regardless where it is found; odd that some don't seem to agree with that line of logic, incorrectly believing the word is exclusively for their use and marketing campaign to insult and harass ALL Caucasian people and beat them into submission. The answer is E, all of the above. The Raven sounds like he has lost touch with reality. Calling someone an 'idiot' is hardly what some people would expect in return for expressing their own opinion; racial and intellectual tolerance. Takes one to know one, I guess.

KOOL-AID??????..From the kitchen of the obama sheeple!! take one heaping spoonful of an inexperienced elitist white male seeking self validation through exploitation of his african-american genetics. Combine two parts black liberation theology clerics spewing intolerance! With two parts of unrepentant intellectuals committed to the destruction of America. Stir in one cup of militant black wife harboring the overwhelming desire to stick it to whitey and one spoonful of typical white person grandmother mix well. Pour a gallon of anti-patriotism into tall glasses and sprinkle with naïve foreign policy ideations. Serve on a platter of meaningless oratorical hyperbole with a generous dollop of wealth re-distribution. Sprinkle liberally with zest of white guilt flip it and flop it till it tastes right. Serve large portions to the undiscerning and spellbound masses convinced that the Second Coming is upon America and now you have a complete recipe for disaster!

I am from Southwestern Pa. These poor imbittered folks ARE just as Obama described them so please do not try and say any different. The Old Ways have been our lifeline going back for over 250 years in some communities and it has taken a hard toll on us to see those ways go. Once we could sustain ourselves with our hunting and canning even if the coal companies ripped us off and kicked us out; now we just wait for things to get better and hope the "strong boss" will make it better. Well he wont. One of the things I saw as a child was grownips taking us 45 miles over the mountain to shop at the big stores in the "city" (Altoona!) while our local clothing store, Ben Franklin and A&P slowly sank under. WE done this and only WE can bring back our small towns. If the East Indians can do work over the phone- so can we! I believe in Obama because he does not promise to fix everything...but asks us to join together to fix things OURSELVES.

The appeal of the Obama campaign is its meekness and humulity.. humble enough to ask all Americans for support, not reliant on old sytems and structures that have failed Amercia... the Appalachian American, the Black American, the Native American have been poor and ignored for 200 years, that is the reality of American political history - that's the common ground bringing Americans together... the well educated and previllaged Americans are also turning away from the status quo, because they too recognise that there is a lot that is wrong with American politics... a lot that has gone astray from the path set out by the founding fathers of America... moreover they understand the increasing importance of real democracy to business and economic prosperity...

The realisation that the Appalachian Ameican has been poor for 200 years, proves that there is no grand racist conspiracy, it proves that even if you are white, black or blue, if you were not considered economically mobile you were forgotten and left on the scrap heap... I believe that both white and black Americans are now realising this, especially as people from these groups become more educated... Appalachia can no longer be appeased by the notion that they are racially superior, when the reality is that they have been bottom of the economic ladder along with blacks for 200 years; blacks no longer believe that they are inferior, they have seen that power comes from organising and focusing their power of consumption... all Americans realise that history has been all about economics, nobody has really cared untill you showed them your money... a new politics is needed to ensure that everyone is enlightened and empowered to deliver what they can for their country and for their families, no matter who they are... because nothing else matters...

So, I am convinced that Americans will vote for Obama... that is the map to victory... no one who is honest about modern America will do otherwise... he is the only candidate who has ever presented truth and enlightenment to the people... he has not stood up for race or money, he stands only for principle... and deep down inside we all know this!!!!

It was referred to as the "War of Northern Aggression" by western Virginians, not West Virginians rhesusman, to answer your question.

  • Posted By: aminahyaquin @ 07/01/2008 6:48:28 AM

In answer to the question about the War, families and communities were split.
One of West Virginia's many strengths , fast receding, is the fact that poor people can live in this state with dignity. There has been a great community tradition of tolerance, but the almighty dollar and the need to survive in an economy where the middle class is beginning to feel pain, the prevelance of superaddictive pharmaceuticalsand the false God of property values, may soon disrupt the neighborliness of rich and poor that has existed here for a couple centuries now.

  • Posted By: rhesusman @ 06/30/2008 11:04:48 PM

Why would West Virginians call the Civil War the "War of Northern Aggression?" The whole reason West Virginia exists was because it seceded from Virginia during the Civil War so it could stay part of the North!

The inquisitive effete elitist may want to check out the opinion in Moore v. Moore, 337 SW2d 781, 789 by Judge Ruark, a fine Ozark surname, of the Southern District of the Missouri Court of Appeals, wherein it is eloquently explained that "hillbilly" is an expression of envy. Tis a privilege to live in the Ozarks. We love our verdant valleys, the soothing cadence of the katydid, and the sonorous song of the whipporwill. The election is ours to determine. Ozarks lawyer.

I have to agree with you there. Missouri is a battleground state, where St. Louis and Kansas City usually vote democratic, but it's the rest of the state that determines who wins. And whoever wins Missouri usually wins the election.

Part of the social and economic mobility that we enjoy in the US is physical mobility. My parents grew up in different parts of the US and moved to California for a better life. I moved from there to Colorado for the same reason. I can appreciate people who love the place where they were born or grew up, but I don't respect that they remain in isolated communities when they could relocate to an area where they have access to better schools and health care as well as a higher standard of living. There isn't some border that they have to cross to obtain if not a better life certainly one that is more financially stable. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that while everybody deserves a certain amount of respect as fellow Americans and human beings, we don't have to respect the choices that they make which cause them to remain in poverty.

Most grow up and leave. The population in our town has remained static or declined for 40 years. Some stay because this is their homeplace. Do you not have a homeplace? If you cannot stand next to the grave of your great-great-great grandmother and granfather as I have- you may not be able to understand these ties to a place.

      • Posted By: brandi2020@verizon.net @ 06/30/2008 9:11:25 PM

It isn't always a choice for them to stay. If you can't afford to drive to work, how can you afford to jump ship and leave town? Moving requires extra cash, trust me I know. WV isn't full of broken down towns with no future. Yes, they exist here, but for the most part it is like everywhere else. We do get to enjoy a low crime rate and natural beauty. I don't have to drive hours to ski- the nearest resort is a fifteen minute drive. I was fortunate enough to find a good, stable job here, and don't plan on leaving anytime soon.
