We are hicks, hillbillies and rednecks ... all true. But since all of your articles suggest that let's see he doesn't need the women, he doesn't need hispanics, he doesn't need the old people, he doesn't need the Clintons, he doesn't need the catholics, he doesn't need Ohio, Pennsylvania or Florida, so ... ah why bother with appallachia, apparently all the red states will turn blue, throw in Alaska and "poof" he's done. Great strategy ... brilliant.

The elitist left has not mocked Appalachia, they have ignored it. These values and morals are the same ones that used the Bible as justification for subjugating an entire race for a hundred years after they were deemed free and equal. Democrats gave away the south when LBJ voted for and helped push through congress civil rights legislation. It is the Republican holier-than-thou-elitist pukes who have mocked Appalachia ever since by pandering to racist fears felt by many decent Southeners. It is what they ,myself included, grew up hearing. Most are not bad people they just believed a Republican thumping the Bible might actually be moral. HolRoller must remember Willie Horton but I'm sure that ad was full of Christian good will with no racial overtones. Finally, if being open-minded and inclusive is being a commie then maybe the definition of democracy should be re-visited.

Every obamamohammed MUST cry racist. Is it in the Hussein..."I AM NOT A MOSLEM101 Handbook"? You are either quite misinformed or just another left-wing loonie. As for the civil rights legislation. Yes, it was introduced by LBJ. Clinton was called racist for reminding blacks of the fact. Next, it PASSED because of the Republican party. Dems. have historically been extremely racist. Even Mr. Peanut ran for Gov. of Ga, on a equal but separate platform. The Dems. decided to give away some food stamps and welfare checks, to buy votes and continue enslavement. Like the fact or not, it is true. MLK was Republican. And the same people who mentor Hussein, the New Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam HATED Dr. King.

Hussein's problem is way less racial, than that pesky commie mohammed life he has led.

      NOBAMA!!!

You are starting to believe your own lies, aren't you, holycow? You keep talking like YOU loved King. When he was alive, racist people like you hated and feared him. Just like you hated and feared Malcolm X. You didn't treat king any different. If he was alive today, you would still be hating him. Just like mccracker hates King to this day.

        • Posted By: HolyRoller @ 06/30/2008 6:00:13 PM

I greatly respect and admire Dr King and his legacy. He is a true American Hero. One of his close associates, the late Dr. Horace E Tate, became a dear friend and mentor to me. You may choose to believe me or not, but I could care less about any external feature of anyone. It's their inner nature, that I consider when I judge anyone.

Malcolm X, Elijah Mohamed, Louis F, Jerry Wright, and all their type....I DESPISE. They will in one breath condemn this nation and its people, and beg for a govt. handout with the next.

Hussein Obama is of their kind. CROOKS AND FRAUDS.

          NOBAMA!!!

          • Posted By: THE RAVEN @ 06/30/2008 6:54:24 PM

Sorry, holycow, I can't believe for a second that you know any black people--personally. Malcolm was a great man. If you ever read about him, or heard or read his eulogy by Ossie Davis--which is considered one of the greatest ever spoken--you would know what Malcolm was about. White people like you believed you merely picked the better of two evils in MLK. He was hated as much as Malcolm--and Mr. X was feared because he dare speak his mind. To hear white people like you talk about how much you love or loved King is sickening and a lie.
Malcom refused to turn the other cheek when assaulted, or kiss whitey A$$. That galled you people the most. He wasn't afraid of you. You can continue comparing this black to that black. Sorry, holywater, those days are gone. We could not care less about you white people's views concerning black people.
And no, I don't believe Obama can be elected because of racists like you--who are to much of a coward to admit it.

Please keep in mind that Willie Horton as a campaign issue was first brought up by a Democrat - Al Gore in the 1988 primaries. Please keep in mind that LBJ would not have been able to pass his Civil Rights legislation without the help of moderate Republicans. The southern Democrats (among others) were trying to railroad the legislation. Your blanket attack on Repbublicans is illogical, unfactual and ill-conceived.

I mentioned in a graduate class that the largest group of poor in this country is now and has always been white. This was met with open disbelief by the class until the professor agreed. The reason no one is aware of this is we are flooded with classes, in both school and workplace sensitivity courses on the difficulties that they face in all aspects of their lives due to the racist white attitudes; the byproduct of all this sensitivity is a real and pervasive reverse racism. It is common belief among minorities that all you have to be is white and everything is easy. If Katrina had hit West Virginia the sights would have been the same except the faces would be white. It's a safe bet the government's response wouldn't have been any better, but the racist excuses wouldn't be the easy excuse. It's about time that all affirmative action programs all be replaced with economic programs to help the true needy. Consider, Michelle Obama's 'poor' upbringing is luxurious to people that don???t have indoor plumbing and far to many middle class blacks expect and receive preferential treatment.

I think the meaning of "racism" should extend to all groups. There is a definite racism in the Black community. I hear it all the time. If a 'black' person is light color, they are called "milkbaby" and members of the black community discriminate against them cause they resent 'whites'... then, the light-colored 'black' person gets comments from 'white' people who are also bigots.

When I heard the pastors of Obama's church clearly spew racist, hate-speech... except it was aimed toward 'white' people.... I was stunned. I don't think a 'white' church could get away with similar speech from the pulpit. I'm certain it would be shut down and the pastor shunned... these people encouraged and cheered Obama's pastor's on.

I think this country has a great deal of work to do to eradicate racism -- from ALL groups.
(there is a study out that shows the black community is highly prejudiced, biased, and --yes-- racist more so than any other group)

    • Posted By: THE RAVEN @ 06/30/2008 12:57:38 PM

You sound like an idiot. You are an idiot. Reverse racism is just anaother excuse you racists use to pratice your hate.

  • Posted By: Glo4u056 @ 06/30/2008 7:06:03 AM

I agree with Martin_gray, unfortunately the reason why you have stayed in poverty is because you cannot seem to understand that voting Republican when you are poor is just down right ignorant. So yes you can continue to vote for the Repub if it makes you feel good about yourself but don't blame Dems because you are poor and make excuses for not at least making headway out of poverty.

    • Posted By: HappyDay41 @ 06/30/2008 6:39:18 PM

Actually, the statistics show that the Democratic party is now the monied party... represented by urban, liberal areas such as California, Boston, Ma., to name a few examples. The Republican party has morphed into the party of the average person, high-school level of education and lower income levels.

Check out the new research. The party of Abraham Lincoln is the party of the Common People... the Democrats are the ones spending 1/2 Billion dollars to 'win' the Oval Office. (that don't sound too poor to me!)

  • Posted By: 13londie @ 06/30/2008 11:26:11 AM

With all the programs to help poor people why arent these people being taken care of?
Whos minding the management, it is up to the elected officials in those citys and states to make sure thier people are being taken care of and its obvious someone isnt doing there job. The problem today is the state politicians worrying more about themselves and there pockets than the people.

    • Posted By: HappyDay41 @ 06/30/2008 6:34:05 PM

The answer to poverty isn't handouts. How do you expect to pay for all of that?
People in Appalachia are survivors. some have gardens, raise livestock or have a skill that they hire out in odd jobs for a little money. The majority will find every way possible to assist themselves and their communities/families before they would run out and look for government handouts.
You must live in an urban area or are from a culture that looks to the government to solve every problem.

    • Posted By: Pam Hussain Reed @ 06/30/2008 5:03:20 PM

The elected officials in those "cities and states" do not reach the ancient small towns. They are pretty much not wanted. Wecall them 'outlanders". We take care of each other-in the small town my parents and grandparents and even some great-great grandparents were born- I can travel past EVERY SINGLE HOUSE and recite a list of ways I am connected (either by birth or narriage) to everyone in this town. Many here would no take welfare or even food stamps if you tried. Most have no mortgage because we live in old homes our great-granpas built. I agree- not poor in the sense that most pople see- mountain people are rich with community support and family ties.

What goes around comes around. Remember when you hanged blacks and tared and feathered all people who were not like you. How about how you look at Hispanics. You see them like dogs and when they go into one of your restaurants you have them wait or ígnore them completely in hopes they'll leave because you don't want "them kind" in your part of the world. The stereotypes shown in TV are the stereotypes you perpetuated by being exactly the way they picture you and hating all others who don't come from your part of the country. And to say you're not a racist - give me a break. Your part of the country and farther south continues to be racist and hateful of all people who are not white, and then you try to hide your racism by saying "we just believe in keeping the races pure, but we're not racist." OK, David Duke.

    • Posted By: HappyDay41 @ 06/30/2008 6:21:47 PM

You are way off track and it shows how prejudiced YOU are.

Hispanics ignored and treated like dogs? That is sooooo wrong of you to say/accuse us of.

You must be a lovely, compassionate, kind person. (Not!)

    • Posted By: Tracker500 @ 06/30/2008 3:31:15 PM

"Remember when you hanged blacks and tared and feathered all people who were not like you.?"

No, I don't remember. How old are you, anyway? You must be older than dirt.

If WV'ians are ignorant, that must explain how Rockefeller got elected. Isn't it interesting that one of the richest men in the country represents a "poor and illerate" group of people. It must feed his big ego to be SO much more "upitier" than his constituants.
Also, the polls in WV, OH, and PA always stated "non university degrees". Which must mean they haven't been brainwashed by liberal professors.
WV, OH and PA keep on thinking freely. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a free thinker. It is sick to be a brainwashed idiot.

I've been through WVA a few times and will always remember it as the first place I have ever been where I was called *** by a group of kids driving by in a pick-up truck (this was in the early 90s, at the time I was a graduate student in Philly and was headed to an ASM meeting with two Italian post doctoral students. They were SHOCKED. I wasnt). Just as I have no desire to discuss any run down ghetto with any sense of pride, its SHOCKING that a person is happy to discuss one of the last truly deeply racist armpits of this country.

    • Posted By: Tracker500 @ 06/30/2008 5:17:48 PM

Apparently, you have never been to Boston. How about Michigan? I can tell you a few stories about Asians getting beat up or verbally abused because they just happened to look like the people in Japan who were outdoing them in the automobile business. You can stereotype all you like, but I thought that was beyond progresssives.

I grew up in East Tennessee. The people there are gracious, intelligent and educated. I received an excellent secondary education there in the 60's, voluteered to serve in the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in Viet Nam for 17 months. After returning, I earned two post graduate degree's by working and putting myself through college. I work a a professional now and am close to retirement.

Poverty? It's still there. Look around you and if you look close then you'll see it where you live.

I'm white. Who do you think I will vote for? Wrong! I've voting for Obama. Let's give someone besides the establishment a chance.

  • Posted By: USAcitizen @ 06/30/2008 3:28:54 PM

I was born and raised in WV and left as soon as I graduated from HS in 1984. WV has been predominately democrat and continues to elect the same ole democrats into office. Democrats have done nothing for WV and it shows by WV being at the bottom on of every list, ie poverty, income, education etc. I pray that the state I love will open their eyes along with the rest of this country and vote out these democrats; the same democrats led by the ms. speaker of the house who stated four years age that now that the democrats are in control of congress things are going to change. She was right, things have changed for the worse. The American people are going to have to open their eyes and quit being decieved and vote out these democrats that are determined to lead this country down the tube.

How can a discussion get so off beat? This article is not about who is or isn't going to be the next president, its about what a politician needs to do to carry the votes of the people in appalachia. I grewup in a large city and upgraded to WV as soon as I could. The writer has it down. Appalachia is not about being poor or uneducated. It is about being a proud people who take care of them selves and do not want a hand out. What most people that need help want is the oppurtunity to do for themselves. I live in a small town that 'takes care of its own'. When something needs done it does not matter if you have are college educated or a grade school dropout everyone gets involved and does what they can and more. What the politicians need to do is get in a car and go town to town and listen to the people of this extended region. As for the articles author - I hope to see see you in Summersville!

    GOODMORNING ALL!!!!

It's been a busy weekend for politics, folks. The GALLUP POLL - which had the candidates tied for the better part of last week - now has OBAMA back up by 4pts. RASMUSSEN is showing a 6% lead for OBAMA, and REALCLEARPOLITICS has OBAMA leading by 7%.

The ELECTORAL MAP - which the GOP never missed an opportunity to reference - has McCain LOSING by 40 points.

Although, BOTH candidates have major flaws and questionable pasts, how is it that ALL of the polls are significantly one-sided? Tracking the candidates support groups reveals that McCain has no true core supporters. His constituacy is "scattered". Evangelicals are jumping ship....the far right, hard-core conservatives are ignoring his phone-calls......and, what I've been hearing is that women (as upset as they are at OBAMA) are not viewing McC as an option.

It seems McCain's past, and caveman-like attitude towards women is rearing it's ugly head. In a recent interview, McC jokes about BEATING HIS WIFE:

    http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/06/mccain-gambles.html

I wouldn't think this would be such an issue if he didn't already have a history of degrading women. In a press conference McC CALLS HIS WIFE THE C-WORD:

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/07/report-mccains-profane-ti_n_95429.html

You'd think that McC's disrespect toward women would only be directed towards adults, but it doesn't stop there. When Chelsea Clinton was only 12 years old, McCain directed a vebal assault towards her - a defenseless young girl:

    http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Alt/alt.politics.bush/2008-02/msg00109.html

On top of the fact that he cheated on, and abandoned his ex-wife after she was severely injured in a car accident, to be w/ a rich, blonde heiress - I now understand why he's losing support of women by the day.

    Wait.....almost forgot........OH HAPPY DAYS!!!!!!

and so secure another 200 years at the bottom of the economic ladder... make up you been ignored and left poor for 200 years, surely you must see that!!!! you need change... that will address you sad and desparate situations

"Hick." "Hillbilly." "Redneck." "Inbred." "Cracker." "Ridge Runner."

Those are words frequently used by the educated, open-minded, progressive, tolerant, non-judgemental liberals. Come to think of it, I heard those very same words in reference to people they have never met when I worked in Boston.

This article is very well written by someone who obviously grew up in appalachia. Onyly a person who grew up in those mountains knows what it is like to have been born and raised. there. Appalachia has a lot to offer and which is greatly appreciated by the inhabitants. One can only appreciate those good things if that person has expierenced the bad things.e.g. not being able to earn $.25 to attend a basketball game or not being aaable to take your best girl out on a dated because you couldn't earn enough money to do so.

This article is extremely well written by someone who has been subjected to all of the things good about the people of appalachia as well as all of the hardships and abuses hurled against those hillbillies .it is proof positive that even a deprived hillbilly can accomplish if given the opportunity to succeed. I should know for I am one of those southeastern Kentucky, Middlesboro, who has experienced all of the good things and the bad things that growing up in those mountains has to offer.
