For Wisconsin Cooling. I couldn't agree more. What a horrible winter. Global warming? I say bring it on!! I would love to have more than 2 months of summer.

i agree with this article it couldn't be more true.

Ya know what sure i bet man is causing the Earths global Warming cycle to excelerate but odds are it was gonna happen anyways. Man has already proven the the Artic was already free of ice at one point in time and then froze over, so why can't the just be a cycle of the earth to freeze over and then thaw to maintain stability and the storms are just a side affect of the earth trying to restore its homeostasis like it was millenia ago!!!

Global Warming is a scam that was created by environmental liberals. There is n o such thing. Who was to blame 100 or 200 years ago or even 10,000 years ago when these same disasters happened? Global Warming?? Wise up People! Wise up media

As scientists are so quick to point out, They have the expertise and knowledge to tell us "hand on heart" that global warming is responsible for the changes in our weather. However, I remember reading a report on this site (some months ago) that the planet Mars (renowned for its gas guzzling cars and heavy industry) is also currently suffering from global warming. Obviously it is the fault of the "little-green-men" that live there and that is why they are green...
Ok, We may be adding to the inevitable, But Mother Nature seems to have a way in putting things right. after all, we have had global warming and ice ages before. We could try blaming the stone age man for creating the wheel and then having to wait a millenium to have the first combustion engine to move it.
As I understand it though, methane is a possible cause of global warming with cattle being the biggest producer...Trees and plants may produce oxygen during the day, but at night they produce CO2 (another cause of global warming) So will we be exterminating flora and fauna on mass?
The trouble is this...There is alot of money to be had from governments around the world to support global warming...and the rewards that they get back are the higher taxes that they will levy upon us. Money makes the world go round...Not mother nature.

It is a simple matter to calculate the additional radiative forcing from increasing CO2 concentration and thus to work out the increase in surface temperature. Scientists on boths sides of the debate don't argue about this. The only argument comes when "alarmists" use computer models and add in significant extra feedbacks from clouds to increase temperature above what CO2 alone can produce. "Deniers" say feedback may be negative or positive, we don't know, though data supports the idea that it is not greatly positive. I am dubious about additional warming, whether anthropogenic or natural, causing extreme weather events. In either case, there has been no statistical warming since 1998 according to all four bodies who track global temperatures (3 in US, one in UK).
note to jhelman, the solar cycle is at a minium right now though it was very high for quite some time, which explains why global temperatures are now dropping. View the data on the website for the SOHO satellite.

Newsweek, please try to be journalists and not advocates. There is considerable debate on attributing global warming as the cause of individual weather events or even short term (think less than 50 years) weather cycles. You did not include any comment or interviews from the iother side of the debate other than to dismiss it out of hand. This kind of writing makes me distrust Newsweek as a source of news. If you want to be an advocacy journal, that's your choice but don't wrap yourself in the cloak of an unbiased news journal when you do so. True? Still under debate is the truth.

Mother Nature? Why not Father Nature? Isn't this a rather sexist stance?
Why does "Mother Nature" always get such a bad rap?
Why not say....and this is gonna be a tough one to wrap your mind around, but.....
why not say.... it's gonna be what GOD wants it to be, no matter what we do.
    Think about it.

And this Fall, it'll be Global Cooling. Happens every year.

  • Posted By: ryanclose @ 07/03/2008 9:14:47 AM

The globe is getting colder not warmer. We are headed for a new ice age. Heck, most of recorded history takes place in a warm fluctuation in a much longer ice age. The Global Warming lie is meant to promote financial re-distribution to developing countries. They are already asking for "reparations." It is meant to cripple our nation.

That's funny. I just heard some scientist discussing the other night how these storms were proof that global warming isn't real as it takes a warm front and a cold front to create the magnitude of the storms we are seeing. He went on to say that the cold front is pushing up from the southeast (which happens to be closer to the sun) while the warm front moves in from the pacific northwest. He also cited storm patterns from back in the 1950s which were nearly identical to the pattern we are seeing now. He suggested the difference lies in the number of dams that have been built since then. Of course, this is Newsweek, so what does it matter? http://denisdutton.com/newsweek_coolingworld.pdf

Talk about the arragonce of mankind! To even consider that we have that much influence of the climate has brought the level of pride to astonishing levels. How long has mankind been in existence? Tens of thousands of years? How long have we recorded and analyzed weather patterns? A fraction of that time.

Now if you were to allude to the effects of drought causing wildfires that pollute the air I can buy that. However the argument that anything manmade will impact the earth as it has leading to "Global Warming" is nonsense. Our politicians, leaders and great influencial people of the media need to focus more attention on something that man really has effect on like poverty, homelessness and starvation just to start.

Even though it is a major election year we as a culture cannot be fooled by those "ologist" who think they have a God-shaped looking glass.

Global warming vs. Mother Nature.....They may be the same culprit. Why so quick??

global warming isn't exactly a new concept

Just wait for it. Back in the '70's we were on the brink of another ice age. An ice age we were causing. Now that we've cycled past the cooling and moved into a period of warming, this too is our fault. Give it a few years; as temperatures begin to come down, the "Global Warming" argument will gently fade away and before long, we'll be on the brink of another "Ice Age"

The level of the Great Lakes is many feet less than it used to be. Everyone State bordering them know it as well as Canada. Years of discussions as to "why". It was blamed on global warming 2 years ago. Everyone wants them to return to 1968 levels. I have read comments, in the past, by the US Army Corps of Engineers, "don't worry, they will come back". Now that they are refilling due to all the rain, you say this is bad and due to warming. Which is it? Everything is blamed on warming. I, as well as thousands of climate experts, that you did not bother to talk to, believe it to be self serving bunk.

I think by greater threat than the Nazi and Japanese of the 30's and 40's she's saying that it has the potential to cause more damage and take more lives. Which is, potentially, true. All we need are a few more hurricane Katrina's.
Whether global warming is anthropological or cyclical in nature it has a clear impact on the environment and we as a society need to adapt to it and be more proactive then trying to disprove people who have dedicated their lives to this kind of research because we don't want to change our lifestyles.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Keep trying Newsweek. I'm still not buying it.

  • Posted By: Wisconsin Cooling @ 07/03/2008 8:40:24 AM

It's all about getting money from people, always trying to suck us out what little money we have.Just to create jobs for research, what a waste of time, Your not going to change a thing so save our money. Yes let the Big oil companies pay, they suck us dry everday. Let all our so called expertperts put more time and effort in make Engines that don't to use fuel oils. they can do it, they jsut don't wnat to because every big shot has there money tied up into the OIl Business. Our Coverment can do more but they don't. They should be spending out money for nw Ideas, the new ideas only got out the back door. Some big Corperation buys them up buries them. They want us to be dependent on oil for ever and ever. Our Goverment could be doing so much more with our money in the right places but they, are very good at spending our money for all kinds of going nowhere programs.Global warming is a farce. In Wisocnsin we had the longest, snowiest , coldest, winter ever. Our weather is not warm, we have frost in June yet and then it frosts in Sept early you can hardly grow a regular garden, the plants get frosted before they are ripe.We had over 130" of snow, this last winter. Long from November to May still cold. Stop wasting our money on this Global warming. It's all about making money off of people. Everyone wants easy money, from Goverment to fund this and fund that. They give grant money for almost any stupid reason..

Money from Big Oil, money from Greepeace and Sierra Club. What's the difference? Both create vested constituencies. Demonizing Big Oil accomplishes virtually nothing, but apparently makes some people feel better. You post reminds me of the old urban legend about the Big 3 car company which bought the rights to a 100 MPG engine, then buried the invention on a shelf because they didn't want to sell it. Riiigghhht. They would rather go bankrupt than share that 100 MPG engine!!
