Why are ditto-head types so threatened by the idea that our actions have contributed to the reaction of global warming?

  • Posted By: mr1126 @ 07/03/2008 4:39:41 AM

Another good one . (We are having earth quakes because we are pulling out to much oil. The earth needs it for lube. lol lol lol Idiots. Ask Al Gore how much he has made from oil? Ask him how much stocks he owns in oil ? Oil men have been giving money to Green Peace . The ajenda= to say we can't build new refineries because of all the Eco heads. Now we can justify $10.00 a gall oil prices.

just noticing, how come global warming cool aid drinkers just shout out LALALLALALALALL, instead of looking at the real science involved. dumb shits.

      And YOUR scientific credentials are.....????

I live in California. I've listened to rangers in the Sierra Nevadas lecture about how the glacier that provides our drinking water is shrinking visibly every year. We have 1400 wildfires burning from unusual dry lightening storms and an extreme draught. I work at a research center that, among other things, overseas disaster preparedness research teams working on how to manage fighting megafires caused in part by global warming. I have a friend who worked for NOAA in D.C. and told me that every paper to come out of the office with the words "climate change" on it was censored once Bush and his oil buddies took the helm. (NOAA=National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association.) So while I myself am not a scientist, I am surrounded by people who are scientists and other professionals in relevant fields. They are all very intelligent, all highly educated, all highly critical and analytical. I'll take their words and testimonials over yours, thanks. It ain't "liberal elites" who are the lemmings or who are running ALL of us over the edge of a cliff, sweetie. It's people who would rather remain proudly ignorant than challenge their preconceptions about anything.

      • Posted By: edkollin @ 07/03/2008 4:10:48 AM

False Logic. Just because The facisistic Bush administration has censored papers supporting man made cause for global warming does not mean man has caused Global Warming. There are reputable scientists without ties Bush Administration or big oil who disagree with all of the Global Warming Hysteria. What the Bush administration censoring has done is hurt the cause of those who do not believe in the Global Warming Hysteria by giving an effective tool to Global Warming Hysterics to hammer us who have not fallen for the hysteria with guilt by association

I find it interesting that NOAA reports that since 1998 the mean global temperature has not changed. That means in the last 10 years, there has not been ANY global warming. How then can the increase in violent weather be tied to a non-existant global warming?

    • Posted By: Isis Skye @ 07/03/2008 4:03:41 AM

As I posted above, I have a friend who worked for NOAA until last year. She said that every report with the words "climate change" on it was censored, not allowed out of the office, once the Bush administration took over. You cannot look to NOAA to support theories about climate change when NOAA is controlled and monitored by people who do not want you to believe in climate change. Simple explanation.

Way to go, Newsweek! Allowing Sharon Begley to shove the global warming hoax down everyone's throat shows that your magazine has hit an all-time low. Begley, obviously, is liberal elite wannabee.

    • Posted By: Isis Skye @ 07/03/2008 3:56:07 AM

People who refer to the "liberal elite" are the very people who make sure that they will never have to worry about ever becoming elite, because they keep electing truly elite, robber baron sorts who will make sure the wealth stays concentrated in the hands of the very few. And how do many of these right-wing elites get their elite-ness? From fossil fuel industries. Last time I checked, Cheney's KBR/Halliburton profitted 18 BILLION $$$ off America's little oil war adventure. They are $18-BILLION richer because people like you bought their bs rhetoric about the "liberal elite," while ordinary people are paying $4.79/gal for gas.

So as long as they keep steering you, deflecting your attention, by coaxing you to keep bashing the "liberal elite," they keep getting richer, and you keep getting poorer. They convince you to stay proud in your ignorance, remain unquestioning of their authority, and wallowing at the bottom of the socio-economic barrel. You think they are on your side??? GUESS AGAIN! They love STEPPING on people like you to get to their perches. Wake up. YOU ARE BEING USED AND EXPLOITED.

About 1000 years ago, the Vikings farmed and lived for hundreds of years in a place called Greenland. Why? Because it was warmer then than now and was habitable. Eventually, Climate Change, which has been going on for 4.5 BILLION years headed towards a cooling period which we call "The Little Ice Age". This lasted for hundreds of years from about 1650 to 1850. Since then we've been in a warming trend.

Even though it's been much warmer in the past, we still have polar bears and mankind is flourishing. Just check the global population figures.

Let's just relax, ignore Al Gore and all the other chicken littles, and just go on about living. Climate Change will always be with us so get used to it.

    • Posted By: Isis Skye @ 07/03/2008 3:37:03 AM

Um, yes, we still have polar bears, but the numbers are declining rapidly. Because the ice caps are melting, they are having to swim further for food, and drowning. The polar bear is now listed as a "vulnerable" species. http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/finder/polarbear/item590.html

And yes, we have had warming trends, and cooling trends before. The difference is the RATE at which climate change is now occurring.

    • Posted By: badlogic @ 06/30/2008 11:19:49 PM

Your comment shows a real ignorance of the way species migrate and adapt. The problem isn't about polar bears and politics (which is what your rant seems to be based on). It's about humans realizing the effect we are having on the planet. It is easy to just "go on living" which is what we're all doing. The choice is do we continue to do nothing and hope for the best or take steps to make ourselves more efficient and help the environment in the process? The big picture is that we are gambling with the world of our future generations so why not err on the side of caution?

  • Posted By: wilsan @ 06/30/2008 12:29:33 PM

I hope Newsweek keeps on doing the "Cram Global Warming down Peoples throats' pieces. It's the best evidence that the Liberal Elites don't have a real argument and must keep on with the 'debate is over' approach.

Maybe when all the liberal lemmings go over the edge, serious people can look at whether it is wise for increased populations to live in risky areas... Like, right on the Gulf Coast.

Its funny how alot of conservatives use science when it is convenient for them. Alot of these scientists who dispute global warming, also dispute the existence of a god and study evolution. You cant use scientific evidence to push one agenda and then dismiss it totally for another. Rush (fat ass) Limbaugh loves to have scientists on his show disputing claims of global warming, but he wouldnt think of having them stay on and talk about how ridiculous christianity is.

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 07/01/2008 11:01:16 AM

" Alot [sic] of these scientists who dispute global warming, also dispute the existence of a god and study evolution.." I would hope ALL scientists would have at least studied evolution. In fact any CHILD who has not even studied evolution is probably home schooled. The study of evolution is de rigueur in most biology textbooks. Your blanket statement that most skeptical scientists are also agnostics or atheists is inaccurate and not supported by the evidence. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/10/1018_041018_science_religion.html
Please note that I am skeptical of both Christianity and Human Induced Climate Change - I also consider myself conservative.
As for Rush (fat ass) Limbaugh...I'm constantly amazed out how the Left can not mention Rush w/o some type of insult. Perhaps they think it makes their arguments against him more convincing? (Interestingly, I find his personal ramblings on Climate Change incoherent and often misguided). However, I must say that he has often admitted that he is biased towards the Christian/conservative world view. It would make no sense to have an anti-Christian scientist on his program. Why would he have them "stay on" and mock his personal beliefs. Your last statement is a non sequitur.
Finally, most comments you've made on this thread contain at least some irrelevant attacks on Christianity. This is your right. If makes you feel better then I'm all for it. I would suggest, however, that you might be better served by saving your outbursts for the therapist's chair.

Attacks on Christianity are never irrelevant. After all this thread is about a hoax right? Well if we are talking about hoaxes, then lets talk about the biggest hoax there is.

My opinion of Sharon Begley's writing is almost low enough for me to cancel my subscription to an otherwise great magazine. Begley can't seem to write anything without sensationalizing it. She calls natural weather cycles a "pretense"? Really?

  • Posted By: robertg222@hotmail.com @ 07/02/2008 2:30:00 PM

Explain to me, now that the earth has been cooling sense 1998 and the temperature is roughly back to what it was in the 1970's how warming had any effect of the floods in the midwest. Global warming is the biggest scam going these days. Anyone running around yelling global warming should be treated like a person that yells fire in a crowded theater and silenced.

  • Posted By: woolleyr @ 07/02/2008 1:03:52 PM

By the way I have a BS in Meteorology and a MS in Environmental Engineering with almost 20 years of experience. Just in case anyone was wondering about my credentials.

  • Posted By: woolleyr @ 07/02/2008 1:01:34 PM

Regardless of Global Warming some of the facts in the story are woefully incorrect at worst or are misleading at best. Let me provide a few examples:
    1. The author tries to connect long term drought in the southwestern US with warm Pacific Ocean water temperatures caused by "Global Warming". This is dead wrong! Unusually cold water in Pacific and unusually warm water in the North Atlantic leads to drought in the southwestern US. These are very well documented cycles where each ocean undergoes multiple decades in which it remains warmer or colder than normal. When the cycles line up you get increased drought, the East may see increased hurricanes and so forth.
    2. I suspect the author???s intent was altered by an Editor???s pen when they made changes to the paragraph containing information about the cause of flooding in the Midwest. The meteorologist at Iowa State got the facts correct but a leap of journalistic freedom followed when it is implied that since global warming is shifting the jet stream north that it allows more tropical storms to impact the northern US???This has nothing to do with the flooding in the Midwest this year!
    3. Reports on hurricane intensity and global warming are hotly contested in the scientific community. Dr Grey of CSU strongly discounts a connection to global warming. Even Kerry Emanuel who started this discussion in 2005 now has doubts about some of his conclusions as well.

I could go on but remember a 1 in 100 year flood event does not mean it only happens once every 100 years but rather means that there is a 1 in 100 chance that any year will have a flood of this magnitude. In the USA we have weather rcords dating back 50 years or so that are dependable and another 50 years earlier that are sketchy. We do not have accurate records of events for most areas of the nation before 1900, don't even get me started on the rest of the world's records.

  • Posted By: cptlou @ 07/02/2008 10:48:01 AM

The author's short sighted view of geological history is simply astounding. The great Mississippi floods of the 1930s, the dust bowl era, and the great Galveston Hurricane come to mind as examples conveniently overlooked by the author.

I find it all so frightening. I saw on the BBC's program Planet Earth this scientist telling an anecdote about speaking to a bunch of cattle men, that he asked the men if they'd noticed there hadn't been a frost on the plain all season, and every cattle man nodded his head. These men understood global warming. I think the tide is definitely turning. I found this article inspirational also: http://www.brightfuture.us/new/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=158&Itemid=58

After writing article after article claiming there is expert consensus that humans cause global warming and the experts that disagree with the consensus are stooges of big oil the writer is blaming the experts because she has been exposed. First problem: the writer says that warming temperatures cause more powerful hurricanes. Actually while that was the long time consensus in the last few years consensus has reversed on this point. Second Problem: The writer claims that because that this warming is ???different??? from cyclical warming this warming must be man made. Taking the arguable claim that that this warming is different from past warming???s at face value that at there are least three possibilities. A. The writes is correct that the cause is human. B. That the warming is part of a cycle we do not understand. C. The cyclical climate change theory is incorrect ( that theory like human cause relies on human fed computer modeling and if a and b happened and c is the result c must have happened because of a and b). Third Problem: The writer claims that there have been two 500 year floods in the last 15 years and other similar type occurrences therefore humans must be causing it. How does she know that? In the last 15 years we had first everybody taping and now downloading every occurrence on youtube. Nobody was recording to see if there were similar floods occurring between say 993 nd 1008
