I think that they were talking about both of the Candidates so I guess you could say that they both flip flop. I just think that you guys enjoy bashing Obama and look for anything to put this man down.

Lets see George Bush was the worst president in History (according to many) because he never changed his mind.

So now we will criticize our latest candidates because they analyze new information and come to new conclusions about old problems.

In the end what it boils down to is a choice of McCain, with the guarantee of more Bush-Cheney policies and more of the same focus on Special Interests, or Obama, with no guarantee but the promise of change and representation for all of the people. A chance for change, even without guarantees, seems attractive.

Surprise. Surprise. You actually decide to participate in mainstream, none-conspiracy-theory ladden, or hateful discourse. After all the junk on (he's muslim, practiced Islam actively as a kid, he's a murderer, as a state senator he frequents gay bars using his actual name - even without being a senator it would be a surprise that this doesnt soon get to his wife, his birth certificate is hidden because he was not born in US - as if the State department under a republican regime would not at least do its thorough job of ensuring this serious constitutional requirement is satisfied - hence those several leaks). (I still have copies of your posts dating back to April - and it is a wall of shame).

Taking your comment on its merit then, it is still false. 90% of his donors have contributed less than $500 according to FEC filings (and please dont accuse the FEC again of some conspiracy - ive seen loony ppostings of how those funds are coming from Hamas and we might as well stop the discourse if you are again of this side of the sane). This is the distinction with other campaigns and other candidates. He who pays the piper dictates the tune. This is the basis for his claim of a new campaign where a few big donors can not hold him indebted to their agenda as we hav ebeing getting every four years fo the past few decades.

      • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 06/30/2008 1:19:32 PM

90% of his donors gave $500 or less. Yet you fail to mention that the richest people in America only make up 2% of America. Funny how you left that out purposely, or, just couldn't figure that out on your own.

    • Posted By: Galasso @ 06/30/2008 9:36:06 AM

Such eloquence and class. Are you hoping that John McCain's two sons who are presently serving their country in uniform will read this? Or perhaps you're writing this for the high school student who may be scrolling down the list of comments to educate themselves in the political process?

      • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 06/30/2008 1:13:46 PM

Is this change we can believe in?

    • Posted By: Galasso @ 06/30/2008 9:16:18 AM

With this kind of eloquence and class in the Obama camp, it is a certainty that he will win the Presidency.

  • Posted By: lindam11 @ 06/30/2008 6:54:37 AM

Why have we come to a place where changing one's mind on the basis of evidence is called "flip-flopping"? I would like a president who can change his/her mind on the basis of evidence. We now have a president who clings to his mistaken ideas despite all evidence and look where it has led us. Do we want 4 more years of this type of inflexibility?

    • Posted By: EveryoneHasBias @ 06/30/2008 1:09:54 PM

I agree thoroughly, but would add that I wish I'd hear that explanation from the candidates' mouths. They are too often caught up in trying to defend their position change, and trying to spin it to look as though that was always their position. I suppose that's because there is so much negative emphasis placed on "flip-flopping," but I wish we could get a little more candor in this regard.

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 06/30/2008 12:15:46 PM

Consider this. Instead of changing your mind after you receive votes for stances you are going to back out of, how about you take a good look at the evidence as you say, and make a decision based off of the evidence first, and then give the answer to the question at hand. Would that be too much to ask of someone running for the presidency? You see Linda, if you dont look at the evidence before hand, are you the candidate that should be making decisions for everyone else? If they would say, hey, let me check on where we are on that issue and I will get back too you, you know what you wouldn't call that guy? A flip flopper. However, when you give the popular answer then change your mind AFTER the votes are counted, That is surely a case of flip flopping. Why cant you understand this?

    • Posted By: Galasso @ 06/30/2008 10:23:56 AM

      Well said.

      • Posted By: dreffein @ 06/30/2008 11:29:45 AM

Linda - I think changing a position can be a good thing as well. However, Obama used it throughout the campaign against HRC. Now, he's changing his position on everything. Just proving that with Obama, it's "just words".

Sinclair failed the lie detector regarding Obama & is currently wanted in Colorado for forgery & stealing tax refunds.

Obama has flip-flopped with the Clintons. They, the Clintons, are politics as usual and now the Obama camp is taking on more and more people from the Clinton camp. I'm disappointed in that. I had hoped Sen. Obama really and truly would be a change from politics as usual....

        That may be so.

Dr. NO wants dependence for energy, lack of entrepreneurialism, punish achievement, decrimilize drugs, offer abortion to children on demand, and lay in bed with the lowest denominators of human existence.

        Sharenews,
I would suggest if your going to use Fox News and Youtube as your source that you don't believe everything you see. At least do some fact checking.

Obama never flip flopped on gun control. Your clips are full of outright lies and distortions to misrepresent Obama and what his position has been.

I'd give you the Iran thing on a technicality, even though his statements were played out of context. When he's talking to Jewish voters he points out that Iran is a threat to Isreal and on other issues.
When talking about a war with the United States and Iran, and deciding whether our strategy should be tough negotiations or just a preemptive strike, he was saying that Iran is not an immediate threat to the United States compared to what the Soviet Union was.
Your just playing Gotcha here. If you disagree with either statements your an idiot. So are you flip-flopping?

On Wright that's just stupid. Those were events that played out publicly between Obama and his pastor over time. I think Obama is allowed to decide about his relationship with his pastor on his own. Furthermore he is allowed to react to ongoing events and make different decisions as events unfolded.
You can argue that you would have done something different at different times, but you can hardly call any of it a flip-flop.

A minimum standard for a flip-flop is could you expect any reasonable person to hold both positions at the same time. If the answer is yes, then it is not a flip-flop.
Another minimum standard for a flip-flop is whether events have transpired between when the two positions were held that would make a reasonable person change strategies or positions in reaction to the new events. If so, then it is not a flip-flop.

If you define flip-flopping as either of the above, then flip-flopping must become the desireable trait that allows a person to react to a changing environment.

        • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 06/30/2008 12:05:07 PM

Great Reply. But unfortunately it will do absolutely no good to use logic on some of these bloggers. They choose to continue to show their ignorance by continually spreading these sick rumors all the while stating that they are Undecided" about who they are voting for. People such as these are either Republicans who are definitely voting for McCain or members of that particular group of older white women who are angry that Sen. Clinton did not win the nomination and are doing their best to punish the DNC, Obama, Congress, the Senate and anyone else who made the mistake, in their small minds, of supporting Sen. Obama., by voting for McCain to "MAKE SURE THAT THEIR VOICES ARE HEARD"

          But thanks for trying.

        • Posted By: sharenews @ 06/29/2008 2:53:18 AM

YOU SAY - Flip Flopping is desirable trait to allow a person react to a changing environment?
I SAY - Yes, it can be, depending on the issue at hand.

My argument is that chin, out of nowhere, comes out with a short blanket statement with no supporting info and expects everyone to take his/her word for it. And my ultimate point is, Obama is like the rest; flip flopping is not an unknown activity in Politics. Just dont make it sound like Obama is excused from such an action cuz it is quite apparent that as we have come to know him a bit more as time goes on that that is not the case.

Pia, my point is that Obama is no better or worse than McCain when it comes to flip-flopping, and sure, throw Hillary into the mix (or any politician, really) as they all do it. So given that, it wouldnt stop me from voting for someone cuz I would not have anyone to vote for. LMAO.

            • Posted By: sharenews @ 06/29/2008 5:40:42 PM

Pia, my point was that Obama is no better nor worse than McCain when it comes to flip flopping, and sure Hillary has her share of flip flopping; all politicians for that matter. But I would not vote for a particular candidate based just on that as they all do it. Case closed.

            • Posted By: sharenews @ 06/29/2008 5:35:23 PM

Pia, I was just stating that Obama is not better than McCain, and yes if you want to throw Hillary into the mix, her too. They ALL flip flop. All politicians for that matter. That was what I was getting at.

Pia - but the difference here - between Hillary and Barack - is that Hillary was crucified for any changes. She was called a liar, panderer and many other names as we both know. Barack was supposed to be different and "pure". What this shows is that for all of his talk, his positions were "just words".

That's why his contributions from small donors are down (although he is now getting bundling from larger donors).

Of course it is politics as usual. Young Democrats, intellectual liberals, students, "cling" to the "hope" of how things could get better and a better way. Nothing will get better in terms of authenticity in action, but what will happen is a totally different agenda with the next President. Just pick your poison.

  • Posted By: metzlerd @ 06/29/2008 12:04:56 AM

I don't think most people have a good idea of where the "flip-flops" have been. Depending on the bias, people are distorting messages all over the place. Obama's had one of the most consistent stands on gun control that I've seen.
    1) He recognises the individuals right to own a gun.
    2) He also recognizes governments rights to control guns, and say maybe fully automatic weapons don't belong, and perhaps hand guns should require permits/registration.

Yet depending on the day, Fox News is saying he's either saying he's anti-gun or he's pro-gun. The truth is he's neither or both depending on the views of the individual looking at him. If you believe all guns should be banned, he seem's pro-gun. If you're the NRA, he seem's anti-gun. But when you say either, it's incorrect.

Yet he hasn't changed his stance overall. So who's really flip-flopping? I'd argue that it's the media trying to distort his position that's the problem. You've got 3 or more different postitions floating around yet only one of them is his.

I'm all for freedom of speech, but perhaps there should be consequences when people misrepresent a candidate's position in public. Freedom of speech was so that we can say what we want, but when we say it, it comes from us. When you get somebody saying what they want, but then trying to assign ownership to somebody else, isn't that opening you up for slander if you lie? The next question will be what about damages, but isn't damage being done to the system? Voters are really getting confused, and that can't be good for the process. Some people say well everybody tries to mislead voters. That's politics.

I think that's a sell out, but I guess I'm in the minority on that one.

If you go back to the Bill of rights - as it is, not as it is trying to constantly be interpreted... The government does not have the right to restrict or control guns. That was the whole purpose behind the second ammendment. Perhaps since everyone wants to assault this one, we should also start at the top. Lets say the bill of rights says that we have freesom of speach. But lets also say that the government reserves the right to control speach. Some things should be banned, you shouldn't be able to speak out against what the government says you can't. See the point here? You can't put limitations on one of our basic individual rights and say it isn't ok to do the same to another.....

I personally think that so-called "flip-flopping" is normal and the candidates have a right to "change their opinion". Everyone changes their opinions, especially in politics, and the presidential candidates are usually just doing it for the better. I'm just a 16 year old, but I run a non-biased weekly poll at http://www.votenic.com for the 2008 election. I started a Vice President poll too, and the results are worth looking at.

If the whole idea of flip flopping is to improve one's poll numbers, doesn't that belittle newsweeks claim of a 15% point lead over McCain? Rasmussen's numbers are radically different. id rasmussen to be believed/ are they reliable or just picked out of the air/ why should we believe rasmussen over Newsweek/

Your hero Bill Clinton allowed the murder of thousands of innocent civilians through terrorist attacks because rather than responding to terrorists, he was more concerned with interns.... How soon we forget the innocent lives lost for our failure to respond
