Can you tell me what political Party the worst president in America is From?

    • Posted By: gbg0001 @ 10/08/2008 8:02:12 PM

The worst President in America is George Bush and he is a republican.

    • Posted By: gbg0001 @ 10/08/2008 7:59:31 PM

GEORGE W. BUSH IS A REPUBLICAN SO THAT IS THE PARTY THAT THE WORST PRESIDENT IS FROM.

Generals who became President of the United States.

Your quiz in the July 14, 2008 edition incorrectly gave only three former generals that became President. Newsweek's answer was Washington, Grant, and Eisenhower. I counted ten by researching the White House's biographies on former Presidents.

    1. George Washington - MG, American Revolution.
    2. Andrew Jackson - MG, War of 1812, Battle of New Orleans
    3. William Henry Harrison - MG, War of 1812, Battle of Tippecanoe
    4. Zachary Taylor - MG, Mexican War, Battles of Monterrey and Buena Vista
    5. Franklin Pierce - BG of Volunteers, Mexican War
    6. Andrew Johnson - BG of Volunteers, Civil War
    7. Ulysses Grant - GEN, Civil War
    8. Rutherford Hayes - Brevet MG, Civil War
    9. James Garfield - BG/MG of Volunteers, Civil War
    10. Dwight Eisenhower - GA, WWII

There are several President who were veterans but did not make it to the General/Flag officer ranks - examples being Theodore Roosevelt, John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, George H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush.

Question 1 on the Global Literacy quiz on the July 7 issue: How many presidents achieved the rank of general or higher? You forgot General Andrew Jackson Battle of New Orleans, War of 1812. That would make 4 presidents who achieved the rank of general. Go back to American History class.

    • Posted By: dmmd @ 07/03/2008 10:56:58 PM

Enter Your Comment You should as well -- there were five -- Zachary Taylor was also a General.

  • Posted By: dmmd @ 07/03/2008 10:55:41 PM

What Newsweek doesn't know is how many of our Presidents served as Generals in the U.S. Military -- Your answer was three (Grant, Eisenhower and Washington). There actually were five -- you left out Andrew Jackson and Zachary Taylor. Tsk, tsk.

Did you know McCain has had 4 different campaign managers? McCain just can't get it right. He keeps changing managers, as if it is their fault that he can not succeed. Fact is, McCain is NOT a good candidate.

After his first run at the Presidency when he got swift boated by Bush, his manager John Weaver got McCain to play "Maverick" and cross party lines to become a NeoLiberal. McCain almost changed parties and became a Democrat and Kerry's running mate, but at the 11th hour he switched horses again and hired Terry Nelson to manage him. Nelson is a strong GOP establishmentarianist, and got McCain to throw himself behind Bush, with promises of the GOP giving him the 2008 nomination. But Nelson didn't last, because the strategy failed. The right wing was suspicious of McCain because McCain voted against abortion, for gay rights and for gun control during his "maverick" phase. They didn't know if they could trust him. Also, Nelson spent money hand over fist, nearly bankrupting McCain's campaign. So he replaced him with Rick Davis, who was at the helm for the past year. Davis is a fiscal conservative, made McCain sell that expensive big bus, and made McCain mind his manners and act polite in public. But now, Davis has been fired too. Why? Because McCain is getting desperate, and the gloves are coming off. His new manager is Steve Schmidt, a Rove disciple and former Rove employee. McCain has also hired Nicole Wallace and Greg Jenkins to head his "Communications Team." Nic and Greg are also former Rove employees, masters of the art of swift boat smear campaigns. McCain going to let the Rove bulldogs off the leash. Look out, America, this is going to get ugly.

My prediction: the 20% of America that is made up of ignorant jingoists will be cheering to see Rove's bloody tactics. But you know what? They were all going to vote for McCain anyway. The rest of America will be so disgusted by the hatchet work of the NeoCons that they will vote AGAINST McCain.

The "last resort" tactic of the GOP to win this election will be to bomb Iran, starting another war. Mark my words, if McCain is not doing well in September, Bush will bomb Iran. He is already setting the stage for this, by saying that Iran has nuclear weapons, even thought inspections by the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency have both found NO EVIDENCE of nuclear weapons. REMIND YOU OF ANYTHING? It's the fake "weapons of mass destruction" all over again.

Did you know that on June 26, Bush, very quietly, declared a state of National Emergency? During a National Emergency the President can DECLARE WAR without waiting for the approval of Congress.

    http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2008/06/20080626-4.html

It is going to be a very bumpy ride, America, so hold on, and DON'T LET BUSH AND ROVE STEAL ANOTHER ELECTION. I wouldn't mind so much if they were good for the economy, but let's face it, they are destroying America.

No wonder a "gateman" in a gym refused to let Obama enter unless he shows a card. He did not know him at all...........what sort of people are in America.

No wonder republicans have ruled the country for so many years with dirty politics and even millions of people do not have simple health insurance.................shame on shame

    • Posted By: pbpace @ 06/30/2008 11:18:09 AM

What does a "gateman" at a gym supposedly asking for "a card" (what kind of card BTW?), have to do with Republican rule? Please explain.
Also, are you implying that Democrats have not been guilty of playing "dirty politics" on occasion?

      • Posted By: Factarereal @ 07/01/2008 12:40:34 AM

Republicans have nothing sensible to offer, and they play around the intelligence of average Americans as has been shown in this poll. The "gateman" in the gym has confirmed the findings of this poll in that he is not intelligent, and that Republicans can easily attract such people with dirty politics and insane activities.

Democrats have good records in terms of clean politics than the republicans who have ruled America more than necessary. We don't have have to go far. Obama has shown that healthy politics and doing the right thing for the people is the only way ahead.

Democrats have had congress for two years so think real hard when did the wheels come off in this economy. I Gas 1.78 gallon 2 years ago
home values all time highs 2 years ago
nancy pelosi promoted to queen of tehe congress two years ago
          where are we now?

any of you conspircacy theorists concerned that the great turn down in the economy over the last two years might be a power grab by the democrats.

anyone else suspect that the world recession could be directly related to the socialist movement that is bringing europe to its knees.

Global warming is real and yet the many deny it

    • Posted By: TheBroker @ 06/30/2008 5:22:43 PM

All I know is that this has been the coldest year in MN in a long time. -30 or lower for weeks at a time this winter and it still hasn't got over 90 degrees this year here. You can't exactly prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that global warming exists so you could be the naive one in this particular instance.

      • Posted By: jath123 @ 07/01/2008 2:49:43 PM

Global warming is based on the average atmospheric temperature of the planet, which is proven every day beyond a shadow of a doubt to be increasing. Isolated pockets can of course be found that don't follow the trend. If the height of the average American is 5'8", and my family is all over 6-ft, does that somehow invalidate the average height of the nation? With regard to climatology, I will trust the technical knowledge of NASA, given their capability of designing and launching spacecraft capable of landing on distant plants. I think they might know a weeee bit more about science than AM radio shock jocks.

        • Posted By: onepoker @ 07/03/2008 10:28:28 AM

If we had an ice age previously and then it went away without any input from humans don't you think there is strong evidence that the climate changes naturally? I have no doubt we infuence the environment in different ways but I don't believe we are destroying the planet in doing so.

Study learn adjust thats how you survive in a changing environment not by trying to stop the environment from changing.

      • Posted By: Kellercheatumandhow @ 07/02/2008 9:49:35 AM

Global Warming sink Florida and burn some parts of the world while the rest of the US slips into a new Iceage. Yes winters are colder and no doubt longer, but summers are exteremly hotter down here. The climate is out of sorts no doubt, Dont think NASA doesnt know. Why do you think there scouting for new planets they know how and when. I hope im gone by then and my kids to.....

      • Posted By: Kellercheatumandhow @ 07/02/2008 9:42:29 AM

Then come to Florida where tempatures reach nearly 100 or better on an average, Global warming doesnt neccessarily mean that the earth will burts into flames and there has been talk about a new ice age. As the guy below says. Nasa knows.

so might the stem cell question be considered unfair? since it is opinion. What might benefit the most from controversial research answer all of it. I see a little bias in addition to sillyness. The most watched television sitcom? this test was more a trivial pursuit than a true test of intellect but hey what do we expect from a left wing tabloid obamabot rag.

  • Posted By: Esvee @ 07/03/2008 3:30:13 AM

I have never seen a more moronic test of someone's intelligence than this. The most-watched TV show question really is taking the piss. How could knowing that qualify you as intelligent? The same for many of the percentage-based questions.

How about asking something meaningful about world history, geography, anthropology, art or science?

It???s actually not surprising to me that the Americans surveyed did poorly on this Global Literacy aptitude test; however, I do not believe that it in any way reflects the ???smartness??? of the individuals surveyed. First and foremost, the results are skewed from the beginning???percentages of each answer were reported and not the percentage that each individual actually scored on the test in its entirety. Some individuals may have done well on portions of the test and poorly on others. Unfortunately, the way the results are reported make them all appear to be ???stupid.??? What actually makes me chuckle is that I did terribly on the test. Not because I am stupid. I hold a doctorate degree in pharmacy and am currently enrolled in an executive masters program. I truly believe that I am a very intelligent person. I believe I scored poorly because these topics are not the things that I focus on from day to day. Are they important topics? Absolutely; however, when I arrive home from a long day at work I am more likely to pick up a pharmacy journal than to sit and watch the daily news or even read a Newsweek magazine for that matter. This is what I believe my patients would want from me. It is expected of me to be the best at what I do???not to be an expert on foreign policy. I, like many others, wish that I had the ability to be more up-to-date with what is happening in the world. But at this point, I just don???t have the time in my day to make it a priority. Sure, you can say that it is irresponsible of me to not know what is going on in the world around me. But when it comes down to me filling YOUR prescription, what would you rather have me know, the potential drug interaction between your medications or who the Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court is? I believe it is the same with most Americans. We work hard to keep up with what we are good at, we leave the rest to the experts of that field, and we catch up when we can. If we tried to know it all, the world might be worse off than it is now. Does that make us stupid? I certainly don???t think so.

This country is getting worse and worse and for the last eight years, this country has been going down the toilet. Why? It's because Bush never did anything about energy, healthcare, immigration or anything else in this country. The only thing Bush did, was lie to all of us about the war and everthing else. Bush is a disgrace to this country and the American people. We sure can't wait till this liar is OUT of office. Obama will have his hands full, when he gets in office. If McCain gets in, it will be just like having Bush in office. This country needs a change for the better and Obama is the only person to do the job. McCain, you and Bush can both gop to hell, because we are tired of republicans ruining this country.

We are so in trouble!...US is populated by people who allow themselves to be manipulated because they don't take the time to inform themselves of the information around them. I often receive emails from well-meaning friends and family that are meant to be "inspirational" and yet they are filled with mis-information and irrational fear of each other. Pragmatism and facts seem to get in the way of critical thinking. I am afraid the average American has no idea what is going on around him, no idea what the the Constitution actually says, what the Bill of Rights is or on what principles America was actually founded. I fear America has become an intellectual wasteland, and I wonder if it could it be by design? The government administration, the parlimentary members of our government and even the Supreme Court is filled with "emotional" rather than thoughtful people. There are so few statesment. We are so in trouble!

Do you know that the Federal Reserve is owned and controlled by private multi-nationalist bankers with no government oversight whatsoever?
    5% Yes
    60% No
    35% What's the 'Federal Reserve'

Do you realize that the same organized crime syndicate has been scientifically inflating and deflating western economies since the days of goldsmithing, using their control over central banks that THEY set up themselves in order to manipulate cash flow and interest rates?
    5% Yes
    95% Huh?

This recession isn't an accident, it's an opportunity for the wealthy, created by the wealthy, in a fun game that some of us like to call class warfare. In case all you middle classers aren't beginging to notice because you've been too busy oggling the carrot in front of your face, the rich really don't care about you and you're not really one of them. They just make you think that you are so you turn a blind eye to the crimes they commit in our name. You are apart of the disposable work force like the rest of us, and their use for us is coming to an end.

Google bilderberg and learn about they're secret meeting in Chantilly, VA with Hillary and Obama. Google the Neocons Project for a New American Century and educate yourselves on the issues that the corporate media is being silent about right now. Now let's see if this comment can go without getting deleted...

Well, that may be, but does that qualify us to elect a President? Look who we "elected" (I use the term loosely) the last two times. He sounds just like one of "us" - interested and engaged somewhat, as long as it affects our own interests; totally disinterested and ignorant on every other front.

I do not want our leadership to be like Bush - I think he must be the worst president we've every had in our entire history. Poor guy. He should have been a used car salesman back in Midland, refereeing little league or high school football in his spare time for a hobby. I bet he'd have been more effective (and caused less damage).

      • Posted By: sjbrock80 @ 07/01/2008 4:18:56 PM

The President is pretty much a paper tiger anyways. It's Congress and the Presidential staff that make all the choices and decisions. Bush is an easy target, but we are all to blame for America's problems.

Anyone who wants to whine and moan about the President so much should get out there and work hard to make changes, starting in the community and working up to federal change.
