HEY, I HAVE A GREAT IDEA, WHY DONT WE TAKE ALL THE PRISONERS THAT ARE ON DEATH ROW , GET RID OF THEM , AND USE THE MONEY FOR THE HORSES??. WE'LL BE KILLING TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE!!

Of these so called "wild mustangs" how many of them are actually domesticated horses that have been turned loose by their owners because of the skyrocketing costs of feed? This sounds more like the Save the Wild Salmon which most of the Wild Salmon's genetics is from the hatchery salmon. Same as bringing back the wolf. They introduced the Canadian wolf which is totally different than the original wolf that once roamed the western states.

is there a petition we can sign? There wasn't on hsus.org

Oh, by the way, I thought that the Democrats were in power in the House and Senate, so if you complain about the 'government' you must not like them. Bush has one of the most eco-friendly ranches in existance. And I would image he manages his range rather well.

    Is AndyFox really George Bush?

It's always easier to just throw something away then to find a workable solution just leave the horses alone they were doing fine out in the wild where they belong. Time and time again we mess around with nature and then another species disappears from the planet needlessly or natural wonder disappears forever beneath a human created lake.................

  • Posted By: cardmaster @ 07/02/2008 3:06:49 PM

quikwak is Right On The Money!! When a species goes extinct because of mans stupidity and indifference, part of the human race is also destroyed. So keep it up and WE will be extinct long before you know it. All things are intertwined and make the whole. Leave the horses alone!! They are the symbol of the making of this country. Poor ranchers. Boo Hoo! The horses were here LONG before you were!! May they be here LONG after you are gone! First the Indians, then the Buffalo, then the Wolves. Now the horses??!! Enough is enough!

Mankind is slowly killing itself, by killing everything else around us, that was here long before we were. Management of these herds is necessary, but euthanizing, because your budget is getting cut - just doesn't make sense. But what has since, Bush has been in the White House. Sounds like they should look into a few more options before making that sort of decision. A lot of good ideas have been posted here.

If the animals are sold & shipped to Mexico, they have slaughterhouses there, that inhumanely kill them before butchering them, to sell for human consumption in foreign countries.

mustangrider: what has Bush got to do with this? It is a political mess that has been going on for 40 years. Both Democrats and Republicans have screwed up the issue. Maybe you should ask your mother if Bush is your father since he seems to have a hand in everything else according to idiots like yourself.

Another country rounded up what they wanted to get rid of, & killed them, we are still shocked by it, & yet because animals do not speak our language some assume they have no intelligence. The other country thought those that they wanted to get rid of had no intelligence. The called them, among other things, animals & we were shocked. Anyone see a pattern here?

We need to harvest this sustainable resource and lessen the damage on the land. The Gov can no longer pay for the over sized heards and the adoption centers have been over saturated.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever read. These are beautiful animals and should be protected not destroyed. We as a nation should be protecting what animal life we have left before we have none. You need to worry about more serious things in this world.

The modern horse was not here until the 1500's. The cattle are grazed during the summer months and then taken off pasture to assure there is enough left for wildlife and that the grasss will return the next year. So, the cattleman does the 'management' of their grass lands for "free".

The horses are there all year and need to survive the winter. The range has to be able to carry them and there are just too many and not enough food. The last several winters have been 'open', not that cold or much snow, but we are in for a good one. When that happens many of these horses will simply starve or become food for the coyotes and wolves. Which I understand that you like wolves, but I'm not keen on having them everywhere. As a tool to remove b uffalo and elk in Yellowstone park, taht is good as the Park is overgrazed.

So, Eastern Journalist, keep us laughing with all your misconceptions and mistakes, pass a few more laws and watch more forests burn and don't let us manage our animals, timber, open spaces, water and growth (we were here second, so stay away).

I think this is symbolic of the many freedoms being lost at the hands of our increasingly over-controlling government. Take something free, wild and beautiful, tie it down and have it live (or die) as determined best by self-absorbed, self-serving, and greedy political and interest groups.

Look past the bottom dollar...take pride in our country and its rich history. Save the mustangs!

  • Posted By: Critter Lover @ 07/02/2008 3:04:04 PM

Shocking yes but not unimaginable for rich people who keep wanting to acquire more and more. I think the members of the Bureau of Land Management should be euthanized. How far will it go? Are we headed next to euthanizing homeless people because of budgetary issues too? If these horses need adopting in order to save them why doesn't the BLM contact the appropriate groups/people ALL OVER the US to do that and not just in certain states? Let Freedom Ring I say for all creatures great and small, man and beast alike! The BLM should look elsewhere to get their jollies and fixes for the sake of greed.

  • Posted By: MSFTTaz @ 07/02/2008 3:02:55 PM

We absolutely cannot euthanize these perfectly healthy and endangered animals who truly are one of the last remaining symbols of early America. What's next? Kill off the bald eagles because they nest on power lines? While we're at it, let's go ahead and start putting senior citizens to sleep because it costs way too much to support them with Social Security and Medicare.

  • Posted By: AndyFox @ 07/02/2008 3:02:55 PM

Everyone who wants the animals protected, you pitch in your dollars and protect them. I don't want my tax dollars going to that. Furthermore, I like my steak. I don't give a rip about a sentimental icon, if it comes to me having to pay for it. I do care about availability of oil. Our country's security depends upon our ability to maintain an army, not upon having a wildlife refuge. BTW, the only reason countries in Africa have refuges is because of the tourism dollar.

  • Posted By: Tx_longbow @ 07/02/2008 3:02:12 PM

I agree, put the folks at BLM in the stall and euthanize them. Or just fire the scum bags and hire people that really want to do the job. The horse has and always will be our bet friend. What happens when global warming destroys most of mankind? The remaining humans will need the horse again. You just never know what might happen in the future so why burn your bridges. Ever see any post apocalyptic movies like ???Postman???? They all end up with the horse being the only mode of transportation.

I say tax Burger King, McDonalds and Wendy???s. They are the ones that use the most beef.

Just makes me angry they helped us build this country and we repay them with death. SICK!! I have land I would gladly take one to save it from death. I'm sure many people have dreamed of having a horse. I'm willing. This idea makes me so angry.

  • Posted By: wildbill69 @ 07/02/2008 3:01:20 PM

The headline suggest that the government wants to completely eliminate the "wild horse". Then you read down and find that they're just talking about culling out the herds. You would think mother nature would keep them in balance, but if she can't, then i guess she may need some assistance!
