    cnchaffin,

YOU are part of the problem. you know NOTHING of wolves. The FEAR humans, and do everything they can to keep their distance. That is why it is so hard to count their numbers. They are not scary at all, ever hugged one? I have, even kissed one right between the eyes after gaining his trust. They dont want ANYTHING to do with you and yet you want to kill them, pathetic!

Just as a correction Mustangs did not survive the ice age. These are not native animals. They were imported just like gypsy moths and Japanese beetles. They are not even wild animals they are feral - domestic species left to fend for themselves. Think of the Mustang as an invasive exotic and it kinda loses the romance, eh? But I do not think they should be killed and certainly not slaughtered. They should be managed more carefully to limit the population. I am a horse person and I think those horses would be happier in a domestic situation. My horse would be lost without his barn, vaccinations, fly spray, deworming, farrier, and daily grooming. If you (being who ever) wants to keep them for historic or romance value they need to be managed that way. Like a feral cat population, or like the horses on Chincoteague. I know the BLM closed a facility in PA where mustangs were put up for adoption, that seems counter productive. Personally I would rather the western open range be left in a truly naturally state: no horses and no cows but we all know that ain't gonna happen.

Oh, my gosh! Should we humanely euthenize elk, deer, bears, buzzards, wild turkeys, and cowboys too??
When are we going to humanely euthenize humans? I can't believe the BLM wants to do this. I adopted a mustang from them one year and thought that was a wonderful way to help preserve and educate this beautiful breed of horse. She was the most loving trusting horse. If they are "adopting out" too many, maybe they should just let them live the way nature intended them to live.
When will we as humans learn to live WITH nature, animals, and the earth instead of destroying every bit of what we admire?????

The issue of horses NOT being a native species is related to the accuracy of the article. If they got that basic fact wrong, what else is wrong? How could you not pick up on that?

Calm down! It has nothing to do with supporting or not supporting the killing of the horses! Its about critical thinking, which is lacking here.

According to the Bureau of Land Management's website, "The estimated current free-roaming population exceeds by some 5,700 the number that the BLM has determined can exist in balance with other public rangeland resources and uses. The appropriate management level is approximately 27,300. Off the range, there are more than 30,000 other wild horses and burros that are fed and cared for at short-term (corral) and long-term (pasture) holding facilities. All wild horses and burros in holding, like those roaming the public rangelands, are protected by the BLM under the 1971 Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act." The Bureau should look at utilizing more programs like the one at Nevada Correctional Center. Trained horses would increase the adoption pool. The year long wait period by the BLM wasn't enforced when it came to light that someone bought a few at auction only to drive down the road to the slaughter house. Now the slaughter houses are gone, we need to make the BLM accountable for the poor management of this program. Ranchers would like to see all the wildlife gone so they can have fat wallets. First the wolves and the buffalos, now the mustangs. Let???s start shooting bald eagles again while we're at it.

You show me a rancher with a fat wallet. Nine times out of ten that rancher owns an oil company. You have no right to point any fingers and judge something you have no clue about. You can not be a proffessional on a subject by visiting websites. Have you ever seen what a wolf does to one of these so called wild horses? The proper name for the mustang is actually feral horse. I will bet you that if we tested all of the wild horse herds in America not even half would go back to the spanish mustang. Since the mustangs were introduced people in all categories have been replacing wild stud horses with blooded stock. Most feral horse herds trace back to thuroughbred and morgan strain. Management is key in this situation. The only people we have to blame are people at the department of the interior. Not the rancher.....

Seems to me that the Bush administration has totally lost its mind. Leave the horses alone.

I have a Mustang, he is 19 years old now, came from the adoption program in 1990. The facts are that the Mustang is a feral horse, non-native to America. The Ancestor of the horse that went extinct, was not much bigger than a dog. These horses are the decendants of the Spanish horses brought over in the early 1500's and every other breed of horse turned loose or escapee since then, to include the draft work horses of the 20's and 30's, when tractors took over their work. They have protection, but it has limits as the law states. They are no where near extinction! Nearly 30,000 on ranges designated for them, that would support maybe 27,000 in a good year. People, there hasn't been a "good" year as the west has undergone a series of drought years. Nearly the same amount in holding pens, some of whom are unadoptable for many reasons.

Euthanizing horses is not an acceptable solution to the problem! I would like to know why they have not simply gelded the stallions that are out there. When they are trapping horses for adoption they should be bringing in as many stallions as possible and gelding them prior to adoption.

I am appauled at the notion of euthanizing these majestic creatures. I cannot and will not EVER understand the justification for destroying an animal for the benefit of humans. Wild animals have just as much, if not more right to be on this land as do we. We should be working to protect them, not moving towards killing them off. They cannot protect themselves from us, so we must keep ourselves from them. What is this that makes humans think they are above all other living creatures? What makes us think we have the all holy right to decide when another creature shall no longer be allowed to live? Animals came before man, whether you believe in science or the Bible. Does that not say something?

Anywhere, anytime I can I say the following:
The planets only problem is too many humans. Reduce our population by 25% to 35% and we have all the resouces we need. Horses, dogs and humans. We dont need to kill anyone or anybody. Lets just institute a slowdown in human birth rate. Have a baby? PAY FOR IT! If your religion dictates that you multiply till your end, then you do not get help from the rest of the world. Breed away! We are way past compasion. We need some good hard facts. HUMAN's use entirely too much of the planets resouses. I don't care about global warming, horses, or the Chinese or Indians. There is too many of all of us. If nothing else, a virus will eventually take care of the issue or maybe it will be glbal warming? But why make anyone suffer. Lets not have those new babies on the panet to experience the mahem that is to come? Stop the human proliferation now.
The horses? We will be eating every plant, animal and maybe human eventually. It is a very small indication of things to come.

What kind of moron would suggest killing these, or any other, kind of animals? I am disgusted by the very thought of this! I know! Let's euthanize the folks that thought of this moronic idea!

Yes, this is the George Bush who enjoyed blowing up frogs as a youth! And his well-known partner--we all know who he likes to shoot!

AMAZING, a country where there is a church in every corner, where we proclaim we are in "GOD side", having COMPASSION has become so scarce. Tell you what, take my tax dollars spent in the Iraq War and give it to OUR poor, OUR tired, OUR children and OUR animals. When did we stop defending those who cant defend themselves?

If this is what our society has come to, killing wildlife because of budgets?! Why don't we try doing that to the bald eagle, or perhaps the grey wolves...... How small minded!! obviously all that matters is the almighty dollar.
