Save the horses - if we wouldn't keep filling all our open space with concrete and more and more people there would be space for our wildlife, not only horses.

There is no reason to kill these horses. If there are budgetary cuts to be made, then cut it elsewhere. You do not kill living creatures just to save money. How about we save money by spending our tax dollars wisely, instead of spending them on our "politicians" ? They all should be working for us - the People - for FREE!

Some of the comments that I have seen on the site, leads me to believe we are the cause of the problem. Those who did not pay attention in school are the ones electing the people incharge who are destroying this country. First, yes the horses were brought here by the Spanish but so was everybody else except for Native Americans and for those you who do not understand what a Native American is that is a America Indian. Second the horses did survive the Ice Age because the Ice Age occurred on the entire planet, there was not a magic wand that omitted the horses native country. Mismanagement of the agencies incharge are the cause of all of the current problems, there is no oil shortage, only in America is there a problem since we believe in Global warming we are going green, which inturns has consumers buying electric cars, which will drive the gas price up, oil companies will get their money regardless. As far as Global warming anyone who has any knowledge in science knows that is the cycle of the earth. It heats up and then cools, and the ozone layer requires carbon dioxide to mantain its stability if you don't believe this look it up Global Warming a con to get you to purchase electricity and ans support those we would normally next support as consumers this is a political process.

I have to agree with 2tn. Our planet has gone through warming and cooling since time began. Hmmm, wonder if the cave people blamed the ice melting on their cars, factories, polution, etc? I'm not saying that our pollution doesn't do some harm but hard for me to believe it's totally responsible for something that has happened for ages and ages and will continue to happen.

Maybe you're the one who didn't pay attention in school. Your comments are ignorant.

All these comments on the horse not being "native" to this country......hello!! If you're white you're not native to this country either! What difference does being native to this country have in this situation? If a living creature isn't native it can be freely killed???? Come on...get real! The mustang is part of our heritage, culture and history, a living, breathing animal and should be treasured as the American icon it truly is.
You people who advocate getting rid of the living simply to preserve your tidy way of life.....try witnessing wholesale slaughter and see it for what it REALLY is! Believe me, it easier to talk and write a line of poo than it is to see it in color!!!

This is a hopeless discussion. As long as people in this country are unwilling to admit that we are eventually going to diminsh all that originally made this country great, the future does not look promising for our children. Afterall, we are so consumed with what benefits us as individuals that we pay very little attention to the impact of our actions over time. Who looks forward? If what the majority prefers that we mine, drill, and occupy every stitch of land available, then what is left? There has to be balance and at some point, we have to stop thinking with our collective wallets and be mindful of the legacy we leave behind - as a country.

It ironic that we can't clean up the infestation of 12 million illegal aliens, yet people are complaining about 60 thousand horses. Let's euthanize the illegal immigrants and leave the horses, who have a right to be here, alone.

    • Posted By: Jannie3 @ 07/02/2008 3:56:05 PM

Let me guess!! you are a native american!! Beacause really they are and were the only ones that were not at any point in the USA history an alien!! I take an illegal alien over you anytime!!

  • Posted By: katz169@juno.com @ 07/02/2008 3:54:53 PM

How about fewer people - maybe America should limit how many kids we have over population is a big problem everywhere

  • Posted By: Lakeman29 @ 07/02/2008 3:44:51 PM

Democrats DO want to REDUCE the number of people. They state PEOPLE are the greatest cause of man-made global warming. Don't you all understand, according to Democrats, people ARE the problem. Just read Sweetmacey's post for any proof you may need in this logic. People are bad, America is VERY BAD (the worst country on the face of the Earth. America should be punished, i.e. Americans should be punished.) It is patiotic to BASH and HATE America....
    People please wise up soon!!!!

FIRST OF ALL I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS, THIS IS NOT THAT TYPE OF ISSUE. IT IS PRESERVING WHAT HAS BEEN GIVEN TO US, OUR FORESTS, RIVERS, ANIMALS, OCEANS AND HOW ABOUT THE AIR WE BREATH. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT PARTY ONE BELONGS TO, THIS IS AN ISSUE OF RESPECT FOR WHAT WE HAVE. I'M NOT SURE WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM ON THIS BUT WE ASK HUMANS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR OWN DESTRUCTION BY LACK OF CARING AND THE GREED WE HAVE. THERE IS NO CONSIDERATION OR THOUGHT ABOUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN FURTHER DOWN THE LINE, ALL WE SEEM TO CARE ABOUT IS THE "NOW" AND NOT THE CONSEQUENCES OF OUR ACTIONS IN THE FUTURE

What some people can not get past is that the Wild Horse and Burro Law, does not mean a return to historic numbers, or that they can not be managed. It specificaly states they are to managed on the ranges they were located on, at the time of the enactment. It further states they are to be managed inaccordance
to the enviromental capaicity of each area. The numbers were set to be no more
than 27,000 horses as being the capacity those ranges could support. The BLM
lands are to be managed in accordnace to the Mutli-use designation of the lands,
which includes Public use and grazing.

Here is the link to the actual law as it pertains to the horse and burros. read it !
    http://www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov/92-195.htm

Wild Horse management areas are not in every state out west, nor does every ranch have a wild horse management area sharing its land. Cattle are grazed 3 months out of year. Horses are on it 12 months a year.

People are running on emotions instead of facts.

I would gladly donate money to save the wild horses. Our government spends huge amounts of money on committees to tell us things logic already tells us. These horse have every right to be able to roam freely. If sheep farmers have a problem with the wild horses; they invented this thing a long time ago called a fence. Give it a try.

I just watch 60 Minutes and the goverment sents 8 Billion on saving the salmon but can't save the horses. What wrong with that picture??

  • Posted By: mochacrittergirl @ 07/02/2008 3:36:48 PM

This is going to continue to be a problem because with the banning of horse slaughter you're also having increasing numbers of domesticated horses being turned loose and becoming ferral thus incresaing the wild population. There are not enough wild predators to keep their numbers in check. It's not rocket science to see how having an increasing population of ferral domesticated species is a problem. I'm a horse owner myself and am disgusted by how people who are not directly involved with these animal species have used emtional arguments to make illogical decsions.

I agree, lets kill and euthanised all the children and animals that overpopulating this earth.

Having watched my step-dad run cattle and horses on BLM leases for years, all the while going to great pains to not damage the watershed by over grazing, I have to ask if the vitriol aimed at stockgrowers is any more than an ad hominem abusively biased view from a well intentioned urbanite. Having also observed the game management efforts of Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, and Arizona, I have to question why population controls that are effective for large game are not appropriate for wild horses? Thirdly, since these are descendents of horses brought by the Spanish, the only ice age they'd have survived would have been the "mini" ice age that ran from the 1300's to approximately 1850. Eohipus did in fact become extinct long before the wild mustangs arrived. While it is entirely likely that any government program contains monetary waste and improvement is always needed, overpopulation of any species that has few if any natural predatory enemies is reasonable if handled ethically. The personification of any animal is logically suspect, and the slippery slope insinuation that the proposed thinning of the herds is total annihilation of these horses is also ludicrous. I do agree that it is always a good idea to hold government accountable for any and all its functions and their costs, monetary or otherwise.

Right on, could not agree with this assessment more. It's nice to see a voice of reason here.

  • Posted By: elhelh @ 07/02/2008 3:50:44 PM

Wild horses did not survive the ice age. The last wild horses in the America died at the end of the last ice age (probably used as food for the early settlers (Indians)). Wild horses were extinct in the new would until the Spanish reintroduced them when they conquered Mexico in 1519. The Mustangs here now are decedents of horses that got away from the Spanish or were turned loose as their owners went back to Spain.

America was built on the backs of these beautiful animals. This is how we return the favor ?

There is a petition for Cloud's Herd - please sign: http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/save-cloud-and-his-wild-herd

    Also, please pass the word!

Call and write the BLM, your Senators and your Congressmen. Time to end the reign of the incompetent BLM.

Our country has become so barbaric., this is a horrific genocide attempt against wild horses. They should line up all of the drug dealers, gang members and sexual preditors and shoot them, then with all the money we save on free court cost for them and the money we save on housing and food while they are in jail could be used to feed and house the horses. These horses are a part of our heritage as a country, we should be protecting them instead of slaughtering them. Change your adoption rules so the people would want to and be able to adopt these animals, and the burros as well. The courts prosecute people every day in court for animal abuse, isn't this animal abuse. What kind of person can look a horse in the eye and just shoot it? Maybe that says a lot for Mr. George Bush!

How about we euthanize all of the inmates on Death Row that are over-crowding US prisons- that us taxpayers are paying for instead of killing off perfectly innocent animals. They are not destructive or propose a threat to society... so as Thomas Wolfe put it best: LIVE AND LET LIVE.
Why does the US Government feel the need to play God???????

  • Posted By: JLJacks @ 07/02/2008 3:48:58 PM

Once again, U. S. government is proposing treating the symptom, rather than the disease. The real issue is not that euthanasia is the answer to creating a ???manageable??? population of wild mustangs (and what is more manageable than zero?). Any good manager will tell you that ???mismanagement??? stems not from the lack of materials, whether that be money or land, but from the inefficient and often selfish choices of the managers themselves. Clearly the first point of mismanagement was in thinning the wild herds; they are now on the road to extinction. A viable answer is certainly to try to reintegrate the corralled horses back into the wild population. However, that is not the real issue at hand. The real issue is: where will American???s draw the line between profit and protecting the environment? The real issue is that the wild mustang herds are more profitable dead, when their land can be used for cattle ranching and the infinite financial gains that idea implies. How many times in our history has the government let ???profit,??? whether in the form of money, land, or oil, lead to a decision of which we are still suffering the consequences? Take a good look at the issues within our election campaigns and ask yourself Americans: Is our government and our leaders offering solutions to the ???symptom??? or are they actually offering solutions to the disease? When you treat a symptom ??? you are still ailing ??? still dying. We conquer only when we treat the disease.
