Thank you for this fact check. The public needs to know the truth so they can make an educated decision in November.

If the president does not have the support of his own party and the other party controls both houses of Congress, what part of his agenda do you think will get done? Being willing to work with the Democrats would be nice for McCain but his agenda is the polar opposite of the people who control the house and senate. Gridlock will rule and the American people will suffer. McCain is not a plausible choice.
    a pla a plausible

Good to have fact checking ... on both sides. Both candidates are essentially decent Americans I believe, but both are politicians, let's keep that in mind. However, for this country to get back on track domestically and to repair our image internationally, I think Obama is the clear choice. I don't care about Reverend Wright or Reverend Hagey and all of the other phony crap being pandered by people such as datzamore, let's focus on the issues and what direction we want this country to move in.

That's the only way to go!! I couldn't vote for MCCain if you paid off my mortgage; I can't stand the thought of four more years as the GOP continues to overrun what's left of our Constitution and judicial system!!

    • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/09/2008 1:34:46 AM

I agree with your view that both are just typical politicians, saying what they say to get votes. I have to disagree with choice of candidates though. McCain is a flawed politician but he never ran his campaign claiming to be running "New Politics." McCain's judgment is head and shoulder above Barry.

I like your view of things.

The real reason why the figures don't jive is simple; the promoters of this ad want FL so badly, they will lie and do anything to get it. Also, they say that this would create 5,000 new jobs; that may be true, but they will undoubtly be for illegals and they will be paying 8.00. 5,000 jobs is nothing to FL at this point unless they are worthwhile jobs and all over the state, not just in Dade County.
Talk about pandering, this is the ultimate!! And I'm sure our illustrious governor has jumped right on this band wagon!!
    God help us all!!

It is typical for some to automatically attempt in some strange way to blame Obama for McCains errors. Please let grandpa be responsible for something! I mean Great Grand Pa! Stop trying to divert the isses, Joe.

My, my - the difference in these numbers is certainly significant. Let's sound the alarm. Alarm, alarm, McCain ad in Florida got some trade statistics wrong. It doesn't matter that the difference doesn't matter. Gosh, what'll we do. I know, lets try to make a big deal out of nothing to help wonderful Obama. Yes! Lets help wonderful Obama! Yea, we did it. Obama and Newsweek forever!

Why oh why didn't we send Mitt Romney as the GOP candidate? The GOP is doomed with McCain as its candidate. Mitt Romney in 2012.

  • Posted By: ebony @ 07/09/2008 3:00:20 AM

O that's not so unusual, his english speaking ads are misleading and tell lies also! Oh but I forgot, McCain has nothing to do with that! How could I forget that!!!!! I do believe that in McCain's old age he forgets what he vows not to do, or how he's voted in the past so he has an excuse for what he does!
I see we really need a change! Change we can believe in! With Obama we can have that change! I don't know bout the rest of you but I just could not take it to have McBush in office!

  • Posted By: REALITY CHECK @ 07/09/2008 2:01:09 AM

I'M SURE THAT NEWSWEEK WILL NEVER REPORT ANY OF OBAMA'S MISTAKES. THAT WOULD BE TOO FAIR AND BALANCED. WHEN WILL NEWSWEEK BE REALLY FAIR AND REGISTER AS A LOBBYIST FOR THE OBAMA CAMPAIGN?

    • Posted By: George from Westerville @ 07/09/2008 2:14:31 AM

Not to worry Reality Check, we have Fox News (Fair and Balanced), Karl Rove and the Swift Boat Veterans to give us the true, unbiased facts. :P

      • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/09/2008 2:35:34 AM

Now you got the ticket, believe half the bull from Fox and half the Crap from MSNBC/Newsweek, and you might actually have something resembling truth.

  • Posted By: adamjohn @ 07/09/2008 2:17:15 AM

I will have to agree with the reality check. Obama made an advertisement talking about how he passed a bill through congress but it never did get through and he was absent during the vote. I believe that would be just as big as this John McCain story. All I can say is that I don't take MSNBC serious anymore. MSNBC News, LOL!

  • Posted By: Wisconsin Voter @ 07/08/2008 11:29:24 PM

WOW a whole ad of DIRECT LIES! The funny thing is we will still see the republican's bashing Obama.

    • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/09/2008 1:37:20 AM

I'm sure you have no problem with any of Obama's lies in his ads?

  • Posted By: MariaIsabella @ 07/09/2008 12:28:14 AM

Oh well, he can always blame it on a campaign aide, kinda like Cindy did with her whole cookie receipe caper.

McCain lies on everything; it is a shame news media does not call him on it. He is a scumbag like Bush who has lost his bearing, and will start another war.

  • Posted By: dmonmcd @ 07/08/2008 10:53:18 PM

What do you expect when he hired Karl Rove's right hand man to take over his campaign, the truth?

  • Posted By: j.n @ 07/08/2008 10:15:53 PM

This is no suprise coming from the McCain campaign, this is all we have been getting from his campaign is lies, not facts wrong, lies.

  • Posted By: ajzito @ 07/08/2008 9:58:44 PM

I wholeheartedly agree with JBinNJ. I am sick to death of journalists repeating lie after lie from campaign speeches and commercials, and completely absolving themselves of the question of honesty. How about McCain's claim that Obama would raise taxes on every one of America's 21 million (sometimes he says 23 million) small businesses? That sounds like a whopper to me --- this column would be a great place to check it out.

  • Posted By: JBinNJ @ 07/08/2008 9:28:21 PM

First of all, "getting the facts wrong" is being much too kind. On this planet we call it lying. Secondly, this is the kind of journalism we need to be seeing more of, not ridiculous daily polls that parse the American public into infinitesimal compartments to find a new "angle" on who's up and who's down. It's about time, Newsweek. I hope to see much more reporting on who's "got the facts wrong". I also hope other outlets will follow your lead.
