I guess if you're doing the whining it doesn't seem like whining. In the Time magazine poll ,by a 61% - 39% margin people agreed with the proposition that "America is a nation of whiners" so if Americans agree with the notion how is it the HUGE!!!!!!!

  • Posted By: lillea @ 07/12/2008 4:31:14 PM

Gramm's gaffe won't hurt McCain as much as Hagel buddying up to Obama. Hagel wants into the White House so badly that he lied to the fine people of Nebraska to get elected. He disguised himself as a conservative Republican and has now spit in the face of those who voted to put him in office. He has based his postition on what benefits himself very much like Mr Obama. Maybe they are two peas in a pod after all.

  • Posted By: lillea @ 07/12/2008 4:13:10 PM

The coverage on Gramm's gaffe is just the liberal meida's effort to draw our attention away from Jesse Jackson's gaffe. By the way, isn't it amazing that Obama always demands that individuals apologize when he feels offended but always has a "spokesperson" apologize for him. I would like to see Obama PERSONALLY apologize just once.

  • Posted By: Wired @ 07/12/2008 4:05:49 PM

Oh I love it. Gramm calls America a nation of whiners, and said we are having a mental recession.

McCain strongly denounces him and boots him from his campaign. Yet McCain supporters agree with Gramm and will still vote for McCain ?

Nothing like having it booth ways.

  • Posted By: LuLuBelle @ 07/12/2008 2:53:40 AM

Let's see - Gramm can't point out that we are a nation of whiners. But Obama can talk about how we dummies need to takes some foreign language classes. I am confused here.

The truth is - We are a nation of whiners. Why does that offend anybody?

    • Posted By: Wired @ 07/12/2008 3:56:05 PM

The big difference here is that half of your comment is an actual quote. Gramm said those things.

The second half of your comment is just wishful thinking to bolster your point of view. Try again.

Would anyone like some cheese with their "whine"....

  • Posted By: MauDib59 @ 07/12/2008 8:05:52 AM

The glaring facts supporting Gramm's statements are that unemployment over the past 15 years is and has been much lower than it was in the 70's or 80's - that is why this is a "mental" recession, media hype. Americans want low prices from foreign products with high salary jobs that do not involve too much work. (I had a job interviewee tell me this week that October is hunting season and he cannot work then).

The pain felt by Americans is the exercise of global competition. The noise you hear comes from those falling behind, the winners are not whiners.

Finally, Fineman makes the absurd statement that Jackson's crude, vicious, hateful, anti-Christian statement is Plato compared to Gramm??? The conservative view is that free enterprise makes the economic pie bigger while Jackson wants to muscle into a great big slice - for thousands of years that method is an ego trip for the leader. Obama is correct that those who want to obtain greater economic benefits have to make better personal choices-that is how he advanced to Harvard law. The individual benefits come from the contribution to the economic pie, but it is easier to ignore your own failings and whine.

Replacing high paying manufacturing jobs with low paying customer service jobs does not qualify as progress.

If lose 100,000 manufacturing jobs that pay $65,000 a year, and replace them with 500,000 jobs that pay $10,000-$20,000 a year, thats not a good thing my friend.Look at the quality of jobs.

Know why McCain wants to distance himself from former Senator Phil Gramm? It is not just because of Gramm's recent obnoxious remarks calling Americans "a nation of whiners" and that unemployed Americans are in "a mental recession." In fact, those remarks were so obnoxious that I wonder if they were engineered just to provide McCain an excuse for publicly distancing himself from Gramm. This issue is a lot deeper than it looks on the surface.

When Gramm was a Senator he was chair of the Committee on Banking, and in that capacity he was able to push through the legislation now known as the "Enron Loophole." This loophole allowed US investment banks to bypass the Federal regulations governing futures trading, and is the reason why the investment banks were able to falsely inflate the prices of oil, wheat, corn and other commodities through massive futures trading, causing your costs of gas, heating oil and food to go through the roof.

Gramm was a member of McCain's campaign team, but now Gramms' name is turning to mud. In addition to the Enron loophole, Gramm pushed through the Gramm-Leach-Biley Act in 1999, which got rid of the laws that seperate banking, insurance and brokerage activities in America. Essentially, this Act did away with all of the good laws written after the Great Depression to protect us from another Wall Street/Banking Industry collapse. That's right, Gramm stripped the system of it's safe guards nine years ago, and guess what? The value of the dollar has nose-dived, Wall Street is highly unstable, and we are in the midst of a recession.

Now you could say that this is not Gramm's fault, that he didn't know what the outcome of his actions would be. However, it turns out that the same investment banks that benefited from the Enron loophole and from the Gramm Act gave more than a million dollars to Gramm's campaign. Uh oh. A Congressional hearing is going to be convened to investigate this. And McCain wants to have noting to do with Gramm, wants us to forget that Gramm has been a key player on McCain's campaign team. Gramm was McCain's campaign CO-CHAIR and LEADING ECONOMIC ADVISER.

With Gramm in the driver's seat as his leading economic adviser, now you know why economists and analysts are saying that McCain's economic policy plans are untenable.

Nins, you get it wrong yet again. Futures trading is simply the latest boogie-man in the woods, promoted by the far left. Futures trading allows some companies and some industries to hedge or 'lock in' their price of fuel for a period of time, which benefits them from a budgeting standpoint (Southwest Airlines is a great example, many trucking companies do the same thing). The upward pressure on pricing from this activity is minimal.

Commodities pricing is set by supply and demand. And the far left has been constraining supply for years (decades actually; think ANWR, offshore, etc). Nins, you and those of your ilk have no one to blame but yourselves for the mess we are in.

We CAN drill our way out of this...and we need to start right now.

      Drill Here
      Drill Now
      Pay Less

      • Posted By: TheVigil @ 07/10/2008 10:57:28 PM

I hope you like wildfires, floods, and more hurricanes like Katrina.

Personally, I can't understand why domestic-drilling advocates can't understand enough economics to understand that more drilling is *only* a temporary solution that ultimately will result in serious, serious losses from climate-related damage in the long term. Yes, domestic drilling might get us *somewhat* out of the hole we're in now, but all we're doing is forestalling fossil fuel shortage for decades at best, which is going to leave us in the same mess again twenty or so years from now, only with the added dangers of a seriously injured climate and environment. Practical environmentalists are less concerned with saving exotic species than they are with the *crippling* and fully ECONOMIC losses that CO2 emissions represent WITHIN a generation. What are you going to do when even domestic drilling can't keep up with demand, the roads are impassable in the East and Midwest due to monsoon-like flooding (which is already starting to happen), and homes in the West are burning like matchsticks and the hospital rooms are filled with people with smoke-related lung disease?

Renewable energy, on the other hand, doesn't run out or damage the environment nearly as much, and a lot of its inefficiencies would start going away if we dumped as many massive subsidies into those technologies as we do towards gasoline right now. The smartest thing any President could do right now would be to start trying to get solar panels on every roof in America...and there's nothing that's going to avoid the inevitable structural changes related to road transportation that comes with increasingly scarce fossil fuels. The smart money is moving closer to work or working closer to home. What it's *not* doing is advocating drop-in-the-bucket domestic drilling practices that are just going to leave us with a toxic and crippled world within our own lifetimes.

        • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/11/2008 12:38:36 AM

How long will Obama's $150 billion take before it produces something real? Drilling is a short term solution but when people are using half their paycheck for gas to get to work, how is that helping the lower or middle class? Domestic drilling has to be done in order to give the economy some breathing room for those alternative energy resources to take hold and work, then we can get off oil. It takes money to make money right? Sometimes it takes oil to get the gears of innovation going.

          • Posted By: Nins @ 07/11/2008 3:12:57 AM

Drilling is NOT a short term solution. It will take 10-20 years from drawing board to gas in your car, and the expense of the projects would be more than the oil available, according to the US Geological Survey. Furthermore, it would pour BILLIONS of dollars in to fossil fuel. Fossil fuel is FINITE and produced at great environmental cost. We need to invest in our future, which is clean, renewable energy sources that make us INDEPENDENT from fossil fuel. Any money spent on drilling is throwing good money after bad.

            • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/12/2008 1:20:45 PM

Of course you miss the entire point I was making, nothing new there. The point is we need oil to hold us over UNTIL innovation makes dependence on Fossil Fuels possible.

What are we going to do in the mean time when Obama keeps saying we need research and research but offers no short term (the next 10-20 years) solution to the problem. By the time Obama has the solution, Americans will be living is squalor.

            • Posted By: summer4077 @ 07/11/2008 9:17:31 AM

Ah, Nins, I think you're missing their point. They WANT us to drill because then our enslavement to oil, and unstable foreign powers, will be prolonged. That will give us ample time to go over and play GI Joe with oil countries. Don't you know that many conservatives (at least the posters on here) love their oil and war more than a clean environment and peace?

          • Posted By: j.n @ 07/11/2008 7:02:50 PM

What good will it do to produce more oil in the USA when the US companys will ship it to the highest bidder like they did the oil coming from Alaska?.

        • Posted By: Nins @ 07/11/2008 3:21:16 AM

You are right Vigil. Thank you for your post.

Jimbo says that futures trading has not inflated the price of oil, that this is only a lie told by leftist liberals. Why then does John Hofmesiter, President of Shell Oil Company, say that the proper, uninflated production price of a barrel of crude oil is no more than $65? Does Jimbo think that the President of Shell Oil is a leftist liberal? (http://www.financialpost.com/reports/oil-watch/story.html?id=532747)

Furthermore, many investment managers and economists have said that out of control futures trading is driving up the price of commodities. Clarence Cazalot, CEO of Marathon Oil, stated in November of 2007 that "$100 oil just isn't justified by the physical demand on the market - it is speculation on the futures market that is driving this." (http://money.cnn.com/2007/11/12/markets/oil_hundred/index.htm?postversion=2007111216) The Senate and the Department of Justice are both investigating this disturbing economic trend. Does Jimbo think that they are ALL of these people are leftist liberals?

God, Jimbo, you really have a one track mind.

Comment: Be carefull, 'Pollyanna' when you have your head stuck in the sand you never know what will bite you on the ass!
    ------------------------------------------
A Pollyana? Why, because I express how many of us feel about the Republican Party, its leaders and John McCain, because we take the time to observe him in action? Because our injured servicemen and women are treated like crapola when they return from Aghanisan and Iraq?? Does that make me a know-nothing?? Your comment about the sand was really crude and uncalled for! This says more about YOU and the kind of person YOU are.....UGLY, inside and out! Go sit on the beach and meet a hungry giant crab. :)

    • Posted By: greengal-08 @ 07/11/2008 9:07:00 PM

'Pollyanna' - to be naively optomistic. Awfully 'thin-skinned' aren't you? If you are going to observe the actions of the Republican party and John McCain, I would suggest that you keep your eyes open and listen closely, but I get the feeling that that isn't what you do. Who's responsible for how our service people are being treated (the mess at Walter Reed, for instance)? Who placed them in the position of becoming mercenaries for the oil barrons? All you seem to be able to respond with is 'boiler plate' talking points with more than a little moralistic arrogance by calling me names.

      • Posted By: Nins @ 07/11/2008 11:10:12 PM

Um, Greengal, YOU are the one who started name-calling, by referring to Birghter America as "Polyanna." If what you meant was that his post was "naively optimistic" well, then, just say so, and leave out the names. Furthermore, his post was neither naive nor optimistic. AND I didn't see anyone holding a gun to the head of the GOP forcing them to become mercenaries for the oil barrons. By definition, all mercenaries are fighting because they are being paid money and not because they have to fight for reasons of nationality or creed.

Brighter America made some good points, which you wish to try to minimize because what he is saying threatens you. So, you call him names, and talk nonsense, and try and draw him into an argument, because you would rather have him getting in a fight with you than continuing to post the truth about the current Republican leadership.

SO, Brighter, since you are new on this blog, you should know that the right-wing reactionaries try to bait anyone who criticizes McCain or the GOP, drawing them into fights so that they stop posting their politically pertinent information. Try not to fall into their trap, just keep speaking your peace and don't respond to them too much, unless they are respectful bloggers who actually want to dialog. There are some good right wing bloggers on this site. Unfortunately, they are far outnumbered by the venom spitting hate mongers, all of whom think they have a license to kill ever since Rove brought his dirty tactics to the GOP.

        • Posted By: greengal-08 @ 07/12/2008 12:49:57 AM

Nins, I'm sure you think that I am confused, but I believe that if you read the post that I replied to that it was 'Brighter' who, initially, started with the name calling by saying that anyone who disagrees with what they admit is their optimistic view of Gramm or his statements or is less than enthusiastic about the economic outlook is 'a chicken little'. 'I would say that 'Pollyanna' as a characterization is certainly no more (actually less) of a perjorative than 'chicken little'. I happen to support our service people who are serving in Iraq, and I happen to believe they deserve to continue to be supported when they come home. Both my husband and I are military veterans - my husband had a 28 year career and served in Vietnam. I didn't say that our service members are mercenariies, I said that they are being used like mercenaries. Blackwater and their ilk are the mercenaries. Who are you referring to as 'right-wing reactionaries'? If you are applying that label to me, you don't have a clue as to what the phrase means! I'm not a conservative, a Republican, and I certainly don't advocate their policies. Maybe you should read things a little more carefully.

It is YOU that has in the past spewed your noxious accusations of racism, membership in the ku klux klan, etc., etc. whenever someone disagrees with you or attempts to refute your repetitive cut & past nonsense.

YOU are truly the pot calling the keddle black. And I'm sure you will accuse me of racism for that particular analogy!

the republicans have been steadily dismantling every safeguard against another great depression ever since ronald " the great prevericator" reagan, the most evil, lying, retarded, disaster in the history of this country. yet people still speak affectionately about the idiot. every nasty, divisive, distorted, deceiving, distracting, destructive, dishonest, brainwashing tactic you are complaining about now was started by this pathetic excuse for a leader. the jingoistic foreign policy, bankrupting the country to pay for an unnecessary arms race with a russia that was already in decline- then using this to say we cant afford health care or social security. i honestly believe god gave that clown alzheimers as a punishment, and i like to imagine him lying there, drooling on himself while he watched nancy doing the ranch hands . why do these jerks constantly try to reduce this country to a banana republic- only greed and a lust for power. but the saddest part is- life in a banana republic sucks. what made america great was spreading the wealth around. everybody could have a house and a car and an education. the cities were clean and nobody stole the toilet paper out of the gas station bathroom. go to manila, or tijuana, or haiti- theres phil grahams vision of our future. a dozen millionaires barricaded from the surrounding slums. true misery for rich and poor. if you gave these jerks a hypothetical choice between theyre getting a million a year and their workers getting 50 thousand, and getting half a million and 10 thousand, respectively, theyd go for the half. they can only enjoy their wealth if someone else is suffering. clinton saved us once, and his reward was a constant, unforgiveable, personal attack on himself, his family, and his friends- jailtime for anyone who didnt plea bargain a bogus federal indictment made out of republican witch hunt toilet paper. i think we may be too far gone this time. well if it gets bad enough, and this may give bush, rove, and their crew pause ( i think it already has which, as our forefathers warned us, is the real reason for the patriot act) theres always the french revolution, the russian revolution-- you get the idea- you may yet see some priviledged heads rolling down the street along rush and phils!!!

  • Posted By: auntidi @ 07/12/2008 2:13:11 AM

This was no GAFFE, this was simple truth about how McCain and the Republicans feel about the economy. Its not the rich people that are hurting. When you make 250K You're doing really well. Five dollar gas? Who cares...bring on $10. The answer for the Republicans...oh lets destroy the planet while we go about solving our energy crisis. Anything but solutions that will actually work? Why? Because the Republicans are Big Oil. They are Bushites and CheneyITES. Both oil men. They are the tax breaks for the oil company while the little guy just eats dirt! Republicans are about giving rich more and the poor nothing. Small Government? Hell the only thing Republicans want to safegaurd is their fat pockets and their million dollar companies. Oh and then they want to take away your right to choose. And they want to destroy that pesky thing like the Constitution of the United States, because the rule of law disturbs them. They want to push their version of morality down the little guys throat. Only the poor are the ones that suffer and then they live in their fine houses and they spend 750K on their credit card and then want ME TO BELIEVE THEY UNDERSTAND? Not only don't they understand the suffering my family feels, Republicans have the gall to tell me I'm WHINING???? I cant go to the doctor to find out if that lump in my breast is cancer because it would mean my kids don't eat. And I am voting for the Democrats this year! Because at least they get it! To hell with McCain and his obsession with winning an unwinnable war. I'm not whining, I'm working hard and I'm barely able to feed my kids. So don't go telling me that I'm whining! I'm living in a three generation home, five adults, two kids and we are pulling our resources and still not making it. Every time we take a step forward we get hit with record high gas prices and a president that can do absolutely nothing constructive but blame congress for not passing offshore drilling?? Its been proven that it won't get us cheaper gas, it won't have any return for at least ten years? *Who comes up with this number?* and in fact, it will all just go overseas. So this is McCain and Bush's grand idea? Oh and of course their is Nuclear. Never mind if Nuclear destroys our planet cause we don't know how to dispose of the waste safely. If I had a car that ran on electricity for the first forty miles, I'd hardly ever have to put gas in my car. Why not give every poor person one of those?

So Howard, the reporter, presumes to lecture Gramm, the Ph.D in economics, about ... economics. All Gramm is guilty of is speaking the truth. That, of course, has no place in politics.
<p>Any one who complains about the price of gas but who votes for the Dems and their drill nowhere notime energy policy is a .... whiner. That goes especially for the entire state of California. The reflexive Dem voters in that state think their car culture is fueled by pixie dust and the tears of Barbra Streisand and Nancy Pelosi.

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 07/11/2008 4:48:21 PM

Ummm, your dead wrong old and delirious.
I was in the mortgage business throughout the refi boom and the banks pretty much HAD to lower their standards for homebuyers because minorities were screaming racism because they could not buy a home. Either due to fixed incomes, lack of money down, etc. So they started doing 0 cash down loans and lowering the standards to people with already poor credit. MOST of these people had to go to classes about their mortgages before they could close on the property so they did infact know what they were signing. So the bank according to you has 2 choices. 1. RACIST LENDER 2. ITS THE LENDERS FAULT FOR GIVING ME THIS LOAN. Then these minorities drove the crime rate up so high that the property values fell almost 40% of the purchased value. They couldn't re-fi due to either poor credit after the home purchase or too high of a LTV (loan to value) rate. After losing their home section 8 housing bought the properties dirt cheap further lowering the other property values in the neighborhood.
Now you can speak on this subject as someone who knows what their talking about.

So the problem with the housing market is the fault of those nasty blacks, latinos and other minorities. Well I really feel so very sorry for you since you have to subject yourself to our existance. Well hopfully your candidate McBitch will find a way to fix this for you.

Talk about blaming others, So I assume that all of the White people we are seeing on television complaining about losing their homes are just actors. True enough there are blacks, whites, yes really whites too, and every other race or culture who are suffering because of this market. And yes quite a few of them, from what I have read and heard on the news, are quilty of accepting those $0 down or teaser rates and then not being able to pay their mortgage.

You did not have to make this a racial issue.

SPORTLOCK09, did you benefit from home loans to these minorities that increased the crime rates and brought about this downward spiral in the housing market? If so, you are nothing more than a racist, opportunistic hypocrite and shouldn???t post such stupidity. By way, in my neighborhood a lot of white folks did NegAm and other creative adjustable mortgage loans with no money down to get into homes they couldn???t afford and are now in foreclosure. Do you not think that has driven down the value of homes in my neighborhood? Do America and the mortgage industry a favor and don???t post something so asinine again.

Baloney. Fineman's column about Gramm's remarks are just another east coast liberal's wishful thinking. More from the Obamamedia. Howard, you going to do a column on Obama's missing pork? Read the Chicago Sun-Times story from
    July,11.

Example, in 1976 when I was working for $2/hr the minimum wage was $2.10 and gas was $0.78/gal -- 2.7 gallons per hour of work. The current minimum wage of $6.55 vs. $3.91/gal (bot yesterday) is 1.7 gal/hr worked. A reason to whine! - but wait, my 65 Dart that I drove to my dishwashing job only gave me 15 miles per gallon whereas today a Neon would give me 100% better mileage.

The waste of oil in gas hogs has ended in a supply crunch -- imagine that -- just quit the whining about the price of gas when Congress Congress Congress gave special tax breaks to the Mega Vehicles (over 6000 lbs).
