This has and will continue to hurt McCain because its another window into how he really thinks. You can fool some of the people some of the time, however not all the people all of the time. McCain hasn't a clue what it feels like to struggle trying to make ends meet. He had the shield of the milatary, then married a millionair and then entered the world of the senate. He has never lived the main street drama of real life. Obama has. His mother at times was on food stamps. He knows what poor means.

I read comments like those of Obama Drama and just don't get it. You rant about things totally unrelated to this story. Do you think that anyone cares about your view of Katrina survivors or your ability to manage your budget? I suggest that you do two things: 1) go take a course in reading comprehension, and 2) turn on CNBC or pick-up a copy of the Wall Street Journal. You do not need to be a genius to understand what is being said regarding the economy. The only point being made in the article is that it appears that neither Senator McCain nor ex-Senator Gramm have a clue as to what is going on in the US economy. And, apparently, neither do you.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. I am so tired or people posting comments just to rant about something. They certainly don't understand the concept that this "arena" is made for commenting on the ARTICLE & not just "blogging" about what they're sick of this week.

Wonder if Mc Cain is also going to try to put our social security money into the stock market?

  • Posted By: Newsweekbhg @ 07/11/2008 10:36:57 AM

Dont know which financial company I should short now. Im afraid if I try to short one in the stock market the government might step in and help these whinning companies out. Any of you Gramm and McCain fans have any idea?

  • Posted By: amber09 @ 07/11/2008 10:36:18 AM

This will and has hurt McCain. Its because its the truth and because of their relation ship, I believe that is also how McCain feels. This is what they talk about when they think no-one is listening. McCain to me is a phoney and almost daily now we get more insight into what he really thinks.

Indeed whiners, just as the GOP honed this to a craft in the last 15 years. Conservatives are victims of gays, Adultery, supreme court, Latinos, taxes, big government, oil drilling, women who don't know their place, public education, foreign countries who wont bow to our demands, the big bad media, the environment and the list goes on and on. Obviously Phil and "stjoe" are right and we idiots are wrong, its never been better!

Gramm is right. All of these self absorbed narcisistic Americans need to learn self dicipline and be thankful for the many things we have in this country. If this attitude continues, we will go the way of the Roman Empire, Britian, Russia and most of the has-beens in history.

  • Posted By: Aggrocrag @ 07/11/2008 10:31:27 AM

The geniuses blaming the "leftist media" are a bunch of .22 caliber minds in a world of .357 magnums. Keep fuming about the leftist/socialist/communist/etc.ist agenda. Way to prove that your concept of the world hasn't changed since about the Red Scare. And of course them gosh durn terrorists support the demmycats and the gays too I suppose. We REAL American's aren't going to be fooled into another 4 years of McShame.

In reply to "ObamaDrama" I agree that the president (i.e. Bush) is wrongly blamed for a lot of things. The pres can only do so much. In many ways, the office is a figurehead anymore.

Regarding the mortgage crisis, here in Florida most of it isn't because people agreed to payments they couldn't afford, it is because of laws that need to be reformed. Specifically, regarding homeowner's insurance. I know of so many of our friends, I can't even count, who are now in financial truoble because after the three big hurricanes hit here, the inxurance companies were allowed to DOUBLE our homeowner's insurance. I personally have lived here all my life & have never had any damages related to hurricanes yet, we have to pay premiums as high as those who have been damaged & repaired over and over. Then as if to add insult to injury, our property taxes were multiplied by 1.5 to help cover those who would no longer be paying property taxes due to loss of their homes. So, get all the facts before you sound off.

As for some of the posters here - did you even read the article?

Phil Gramm is right. People like Howard Fineman, and unfortunately that is half of America, are simply wrong!!! There really is nothing else to say. We have been inundated by whiners. Look at most of our leadership and media. Look at Howard Fineman.

  • Posted By: Newsweekbhg @ 07/11/2008 10:13:57 AM

Do any of you think Bear Sterns whined and are Freddie and Fannie Mae currently Whinning? What about the federal reserve allowing investment banks to barrow from the over night window. It seems like it is ok for these commpanies to complain but its not OK for average Americans.

  • Posted By: Long Gone @ 07/11/2008 10:09:57 AM

Gramm's right. We are a nation of whiners. When I consider what my parents and grandparents had to deal with, our present complaints are laughable. The simple fact is the US is, at the present time, the best place to be alive at any time in mankind's history. People who are looking for government to provide solutions that will increase their standard of living are wasting their time. Those improvements come through personal and institutional productivity: education, savings, hard work and plain old good decision-making. Unfortunately, the last place to look for the latter in this country in our Congress, regardless of the party in power.

  • Posted By: fiorot @ 07/11/2008 10:06:11 AM

Gee all you guys that are complaining Phil's comments just sounded like the "Straight Talk Express" and about 75 percent correct too! Just listen to yourselves here don't you hear that whine?

    • Posted By: fiorot @ 07/11/2008 10:08:55 AM

besides Phil still has his nuts

  • Posted By: mart7lin @ 07/11/2008 10:05:47 AM

Besides the fact that Gramm and McCain are out of touch with the plight of the average American, I am concerned that McCain has not been able to effectively run his own campain. He has restarted the campaign three (3) times and it is still in a shambles. How can we trust McCain to run the country when he can't seem to get a handle on organizing and running his own campaign for the Presidency?

Besides the fact that McCain and his cronies are out of touch with the plight of the average American, I am deeply concerned with the fact that McCain is not able to effectively his own campaign. He has restarted the campaign three (3) times and it is still in a shambles. How can we trust him to run the country when he can't even run his campaign?

I suppose if you're sitting where Phil Gramm is sitting (on top of the millions himself and his wife made through their Enron connections) or sitting where McCain is sitting (in the front of a private jet paid for by his beer heiress wife), then the economy is just peachy.

    Everyone else? Not so much.

    Comment: TO: summer4077,

Man, you left over hippie types are still as clueless as ever, aren't you? Ever hear of 9/11? THEY came for US, flower brain and if you think they were ready to just hang it up after that, guess again. And, the REASON we have to depend on foreign oil is due to the fact that you and you're flower power friends who want to "save the planet" from ourselves (how DUMB is that), have managed to PREVENT drilling our OWN oil and creating new refineries for the last 30 years.

YOU may ride your little bicycle down to the welfare office to collect you gov't handouts, but most REAL Americans don't. If you're so miserable here, I have a list of countries that I'm sure you'll be MUCH happier in, starting with N. Korea, Iran, Syria, and Red China.
    *********************************************************************************************************************
I'm too young to have been a hippie, but quite frankly, nutty as it sounds, I'm thinking the gov't decided to drain other countries of THEIR oil first, while saving ours until we'd have to need it. They first needed a reason: The environmentalist's fears in the late 60's/early 70's fueled (no pun intended) the gov't's plans perfectly. I think no matter who wins, we're going to drill, but only AFTER other country's oil sources are almost completely depleted.

  • Posted By: faminchin @ 07/11/2008 9:35:24 AM

Amazing how the media siezes any opportunity to attack one side, and constantly makes excuses for anything said by the other, without even caring how obvious they are with their bias!

  • Posted By: olderwiser @ 07/11/2008 9:34:40 AM

Gramm should have worked for Enron and had his retirement tied up in stock that he couldn't sell while those who ran the place into the ground sold theirs before the market knew that the shares were worthless. He might then be a little more familiar with the cause of whining. Or, how do we know? He might have worshipped those who fleeced him while he worked because they were good Republicans. and cheered them with an Aggie yell from Texas A&M, gotten up and started from scratch again with his kids who had to drop out of college because he was broke, and made a fortune, Republican style, screwing the common folk out of their earnings. Good job, Grammy.
