What the Obama troglodytes can't fathom is that you can't run for president and be anti-establishment. The President is leader of the establishment, and the american people see that as a position of protecting the US and it's establishment. Because the US has established the entire world, and it works.

In another 4 years, we will have forgotten about Iraq and Afghanistan, and moved on. Can anyone remember our conflict in Kosovo and Serbia? How we were doomed to an endless unwinnable war there also?

For the Bush family, destruction of endless communism, establishment of democracies in south america, eastern europe, and now the blunting of 1600 years of Jihadist holy war. Not bad for 16 years.

It seems obvious to me that the Obama troglodytes don't understand America.

The American people believe you can't lead a government you have spent most of your life disparaging and trying to be the alternative to. All the anti-war, anti-establishment rhetoric sounds great when you are running against another anti-whatever candidate, but when you run to be the leader of the establishment, it does not make sense to vote for the anti-establishment candidate. At some point, you have to be "the man".

SO, the american people have to choose between a 30 year senate veteran, or a 1.5 year senator. Who would YOU pick to lead the establishment? And the primary job of a LEADER? To pick a young, vigorous replacement. Sarah Palin will learn from McCAIN, and be president for 8 years.

I just don't understand why in this publication it would state that not voting for Obama would be racist. I see it totally different. I see Obama as a man who just happens to be black. I will choose to vote for him not because of his color but what he stands for. I have never seen so many newspapers, magizines and journalist oozy over a man. It is so one sided. That to me is rasict. He doesn't need this. You must not think that Obama can do it on his own. That is a real shame. Let him stand as a man just like McCain and let the best man win.

  • Posted By: JM Vance @ 08/27/2008 2:26:48 PM

Why does everyone think Obama isn'r ready to lead when you have Hillary who thinks dhe was ducking bullets when she got off a plane overseas and John McCain who doesn't know how many houses he has and most of the time he can only talk about when he was a prisoner of war when asked a question. How can a person feel confidant that Hillary could remember what she discussed or what deal she made with some foreign country if she can't remember if she was doging bullets or not and the same for McCain-if he can't remember how many houses might he forget which country or foreign leader he was making a deal with?

  • Posted By: chindognyc @ 07/14/2008 3:49:36 PM

The people who will pick our President will be our young Americans. They are tired of not being heard. Tired of the Bush policy and McCain bringing Bush policy with him. After Phil Graham said that we are a nation of whiners, that just sealed the deal. It will be the debates that will destroy McCain. There is also the Green Party who have there candidate. She is a young black woman. Lets see if Whte females will go for her. Why do I have this strange feeling that the same white women who said that they wanted a woman in the White House will not vote for McKinney. If thats not letting America know that Whte America are still racist, this will prove it.

    • Posted By: Newvoter101 @ 08/18/2008 1:30:13 AM

Enter Your CommentNo you are WRONG AGAIN! who we the American people choose to vote for once again has nothing to do with race! And I agree with Mr. Grahm. You young people are WHINERS and big time at that. You have no fortatude, no will and no guts. You think that everything is owed to you. Here where I live there is a huge advertising campaign to get 20-30 somethings into the construction trades. i work in the electrical trade as an electrician. This campaign however is having problems getting young people to WORK. Seems like you all want it given to you. Get a REAL JOB.

    • Posted By: IELeibowitz @ 07/14/2008 4:12:59 PM

"The people who will pick our President will be our young Americans."

That is doubtful. Similar claims have been made in the past, each time with advocates saying "but this time will be different!" -- and each time the youth vote stayed home.

I would predict higher-than-usual numbers of young voters showing up at the polls on election day, particularly in more urban areas in states that are already in the blue column. The majority of these voters will spring for Obama. Don't be surprised, though, if Obama's momentum has slowed enough by November that a good deal of the youth vote slips back into its default electoral mode of apathy.

Heck, even Obama girl admitted that she didn't bother to pull the lever for her main squeeze during the primaries.

        The Primaries proved my case

    • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/14/2008 4:08:00 PM

The Democrats always say this will be the year that America's youth get heard....since the 60's. How's the track record so far?
Obama is taking more and more of Bush's stances every week. Faith Based Initiatives? Taking Second Languages in HS? Education Reform? Guess what, those are Bush's platforms not Obama's. It will be funny watching the obamacrats squirm, when Obama comes back from Iraq and has to publicly admit that the Surge, the one that McCain asked for and Bush finally approved, is working!n
Hey I'm still waiting for an Obama/McCain debate....McCain has asked....Obama keeps dodging. Why is he so scared to debate a poor old decrepit man?
Always have to be about how racist all white people are huh? Your so transparent. We all know who is the racist here. How come you don't vote for the Green candidate? She is a woman and black. If that's your criteria, then you'd be a racist for NOT voting for her, since any white person that doesn't, by your logic, is racist?

        • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/14/2008 4:36:41 PM

I guess your right....see how UNITED the Democratic Party is for it too...
You still didn't answer why Obama is taking a lot of Bush's Talking Points....is Bush not that bad anymore?

        • Posted By: IELeibowitz @ 07/14/2008 4:33:39 PM

          "The Primaries proved my point."

The primaries proved nothing. Unlike just about every other election in which they have voted, youth turned out to vote in large numbers in some states during the recent primaries. While that suggests that it is reasonable to expect a larger-than-normal turnout from youth come November, the weight of past history also suggests that it is difficult to sustain the interest of youth in an election cycle for very long. Declaring victory before election day (which is a long, long time from now in the political point-of-view) has even occurred on such flimsy "proof" is bordering on delusional.

Besides, I thought that you already suggested that Obama may lose because all of the white people are racist and will vote against him? You really need to start checking your talking points before you post.

  • Posted By: chindognyc @ 07/14/2008 11:31:29 PM

Women talk about how they want a woman in the White House. I talked to them about the Green Party. So far, I haven't heard one woman say anything. You want to know why? The candidate is Mckinney. She is a black woman. Women said that they want a woman in the White House. You have that chance now. The Green Party have a female candidate and so far not one woman said they would support her. Hahahahahaha. I wonder why? I wonder why won't any female talk about this issue. You still have a chance to have a woman as President and none of the females who supported Hillary are supporting her. I rest my case when I say that it is a color thing, not a woman thing. Like I said, you can't blame white America. They are who they are!

    • Posted By: Newvoter101 @ 08/18/2008 1:07:23 AM

Enter Your CommentSo IF I vote for your Black candidate in the green party not only do I prove that I am not racist but I will also through away my vote?LOL

    • Posted By: IELeibowitz @ 07/15/2008 12:34:24 AM

I dunno, maybe women won't support Cynthia McKinney because: (1) the US electorate tends to avoid 3rd-party candidates; (2) women would like to see a female candidate but won't reflexively pull the lever for her if they don't agree with her positions; (3) McKinney is a nutjob.

You go right ahead and keep up the trollish race-baiting though, chindognyc. Calls to common sense and civil discourse have not stopped you yet today, so why bother now, eh?

      • Posted By: chindognyc @ 07/15/2008 12:49:23 AM

Your right, and I won't. As long as we can't come together, I will just keep putting it out there. I do have to say, though, I do like your response.

"As long as we can't come together, I will just keep putting it out there."

In other words, unless everyone else agrees with you, you will continue promoting a racist world view. Of course, when everyone agrees with you, then they will be promoting racist world views, too. You just want it to be your racist world view.

Newsflash: Inexperience = Bad position for America's future and security. Obama's #1 and #2 Veep prospects just came out opposing Obama on off shore drilling. Reported today....

Jim Webb of Virginia wants his home state to have the right to explore for energy off Virginias coast. Webb will be voting for a bill sponsored by Republican Gov Mark Warner that will do just that. Another stunning revelation is.....Tim Kaine, another Obama Veep prospect is in line with exploring energy off the coast and will also support the same republican bill sponsored by Mark Warner.

The moral of this story is.....these men are putting politics aside to save America from all out security and economic chaos with this energy crisis. Shouldn't Obama do the same? Isn't there a time for political posturing and a time to save a nation and its people's future? How much courage does it really take to choose country first as president?

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 07/15/2008 12:51:25 AM

U do realize that drilling offshore or in ANWAR is not goig to improve our gas prices right? Im not saying that exploring our oil abilities is wrong, but its not going to help gas prices, admit it, and accept it. All this bs about lowering our energy costs is foder for political nitwits, and i think you know it in reality.

Your buddy Bill Clinton is to Blame for signing the offshore ban in 1998! one of the many reasons I didn't vote for him the second time! Had he not signed that ban guess what folks? We would have that oil by now! I figure gas would be in the $2.65-$2.80 range. Much better than what we are paying today. So yes let's drill and drill now! Also it was Clinton once again who didn't capture Osama Bin Laden in 1995. The afgan gov. almost handed him to us but oh no we can't get him! Even though he tried to bomb the towers in 1993! The democratic party has been hijacked by super liberals, treehuggers and folks who like terrorists!

He is scared for his business if BHO is elected. His business won't be able to operate when BHO wanting to TAX TO DEATH the very people that employ us all, just think about it for a second. Hell, I want to start my own small business in about 4-5 years. My plan is to install solar panels on the roofs of small business and homeowners. But if BHO gets in why should I? A good part of my profits are going to go to those who don't work under BHO's plans. I mean this dude is a closet Marxist, think before you vote, PLEASE.

Do you have any sense of the irony in calling everyone else a grade school fink when you post comments riddled with errors and that read like a text message?

As for what normal people will do if their candidate does not win, they will likely sigh, gripe a bit, shrug their shoulders, and keep doing whatever they were doing when they weren't following the elections. Becoming a wreck and other such silliness (threatening to leave the country would be another good example) would most definitely not be included in their responses to their candidate losing.

I am not an Obama Supporter nor a full fledged McCain supporter. I can only imagine what a defeat of Obama will be in the streets of America even though he at least made it to become the first Black Democratic nominee (with help from his friends, the DMC and MSM). I shiver to think of the poor loser reaction of his supporters. I can imagine the claims they will make.

This is directed at THOSE Clinton supporters who blame Obama, and yes that has been stated many times, along with all of the media outlets, the DNC etc. Those Clinton supporters who are actively promoting McCain out of their spite. In my opinion these women are an embarrasment to their gender. They know who they are regardless of how much they protest!!

Hi P, thanks, but just to address Shares remark about my not being a uniter. This not true, I totally understand someone's passion about their candidate. I personally do not like or respect Sharenews and have not since she called me a liar and questioned my integrity by stating that I had fabricated information that I posted from the Pumapac site that she promotes. Also the whole "I'M UNDECIDED" BS really irks me, as it is sooooo very obvious that she is a McCain supporter.

You should read some of the comments on the www.pumapac.org site. These women actually refer to themselves as animals, snow tiger etc. they refer to their site as the Puma Den and use terms like did you Growl today (Meaning calling president Clinton or the super delegates to ask that they not support Obama)

I posted a comment from a puma member where they stated that even though they are disappointed that Clinton did not win that there was no way that they could ever vote for McCain. They also stated that they did not understand the members who were promoting voting for McCain since his and Sen. Clinton's positions were almost 100% opposite.

Sharenews stated that it was so sad that Obama supporters had to make up information to support their candidates. Whew , my fingers hurt LOL! Just wanted you to understand my attitude towards Sharenews.

            Ensuring a roll-call vote

Inviting her to speak, during prime-time, on August 26th, the 88th anniversary of Women's Suffrage

Yes, of course that is possible... and probably likely. . I just wish I felt better about it. And believe me I did not vote for Hillary just because she is a woman (I am not a whiney feminist at all or whatever Sj accused me and other Hillary supporters of) cuz this country is in too much of a mess to vote for someone based just on a candidates sex or race. I have to believe in the person, not only their policies and plans moving forward, but also their accomplishments/experience to prove they will get the job done to have a comfort level about voting for that person. That is just me. I need to see tangibles when it comes for voting for a candidate and am not one to have faith in change and hope alone. I am not saying that to diss Obama, I really am not. I just do not feel that he is the best choice. That is just me. I respect you for your choice of Obama, but as of now I am not there with you yet. Well, when the Vps are revealed that might help in comfort level for me. Well thanks for being reasonable responding directly to me. I am not seeing the same from sj cuz I respect her choice of Obama but dont appreciate being called a whiney, poor me Hillary supporter cuz that is not the case. I dont even blame Obama. I blame the DNC and the Media.

Obama is totally not out of picture completely even though right now I say I am not voting for him cuz I am saying the same thing about McCain. Like I said, the VP Obama picks may make a difference in how I vote, and now, it doesnt have to be Hillary although that would be one way to help ensure a solid tickent especially if we somehow start seeing Bin Ladin popping up with threat tapes or if we actually experience some kind of terrorist attempt of an attack. I in no way of course wish that this happens, but I know if it did like some guy (who was it on McCains team?) said, unless Obama has a solid VP people would have confidence in to address something like that McCain would be a sure win in the GE.

  • Posted By: chindognyc @ 07/15/2008 12:21:03 PM

Do you hear McCain's speech on fighting terror and the war in Afghanistan. He also said he will find Osama bin Laden. I have heard everything. This is all McCain can talk about. He said that not only will the American people pay for the war in Afghanistan, but the world will help us pay for the war. Has McCain been using some of those poppy seed? I think McCain is really old and don't know what he is talking about. McCain now wants to take some troops out of Iraq and send them to Afghanistan. He still don't know how to fix our economy.

Pia1981 and chindognyc, you will have to do better in your criticisms of McCain than "He's old." Remember, after all, that age could be viewed by different segments of the electorate as a liability for either Obama or McCain or both. Every criticism of McCain's age can be turned on its head against Obama with accusations of youthful naiveté and inexperience. It's a cheap shot, and it can backfire on you.

        • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 07/17/2008 10:55:52 PM

The headline reads that Oboma's lead has faded...... Obama himself is faded.... His consistent use of poetic rhetoric cannot hold water....Especially since the meaning of his words are changed to mean something completely different days and sometimes even hours after he says them....McCain might be older but he is as the media themselves dubbed him to be... a true maverick . The snake doesn't stand a chance against McCain who has both the experience and the integrity to serve as President of the United States of America.

Plus BO had stated that one of the first things he will do IF he gets in is he is going to allow on-demand abortion at the federal level. Minors won't even have to tell their parents. And then when he said that he wouldn't want one of his daughters to be "punished with a baby if they made a mistake." I think that pretty much sums it up! 45 MILLION babies have been killed since 1973 you know Roe vs Wade. One of the dead I don't know could have been a research scientist who came up with a cure for cancer, aids, mental illnesses etc. Or one could have been a research scientist who could have come up with a new regenerating energy source? One could have been the next Mark twain, Pablo picasso or Margaret Mead. Just something to think about and ponder!

free market is only good for those who are already in on the deal....we don't have any true free market from gas prices to globalization, if it favors wealthy, it will be subsidized, i.e. oil/coal, if it is something new for everybody, then fuggetabudit...ie.wind/solar.....and a third bush term will only prolong it.....wait, let's drill offshore, totally ruin any remaining pristine areas so rich can get even richer and maybe in ten years they will come online for about three weeks' worth of oil....this "horizontal" drilling which will "protect reefs" according to moron in charge is used by none less than halliburton tricky dicks company...and they are also using it here to ruin our land and water to enrich a few landowners w/natural gas reserves.....everywhere, the same old story.....screw the rest of us.....let's build more roads, but god forbid let's tax people a penny to pay for light rail or a subway.....

or in another brilliant idea, get rid of gas tax, which will lead to massive job loss and even worse infrastructure, dam failures, bridge collapses, etc....this is still floated by dum A S S III ie. mcbush

Enter Your CommentIn regards to drilling for oil if we don't do it then others wil. Actually, they are doing it already. Russia is currently drilling off the Florida coast and Brazil is drilling off of their coast. I guess the Brazilians figure it's better not desrtoy the rain forest for their sugarcane ethanol and just start using the oil into gasoline and other consumer items. The truth of the matter is: If anyone can drill responsibly it will be the good ole USA. We are the most technologhically advanced society on the face of the planet!

Well we see good news, not one bigot posting all of July 15th, the reasonable people are back after all the bs of ranting and raving of ridiculous postings. Happy hump day all, we are all here, breathing and excited to be alive. We are waiting with anticipation for the debates. McCain has really been saying some things that make a double take worthwhile. Obama isn't perfect either, but some of what McCain is saying is becoming scary again. Have a fantastic Wednesday, more surprises around the corner with both camps.

Hate to inform you sweety but most people who don't want Obama for President are not Bigots and would be just fine with say, Colin Powell, who has the experience and who has the maturity and who has a record to run on....Obama is lacking these and is not up to the job. All you people out there screaming race are the same ones who want to ban the word "black hole", release all crack prisoners, and elect Al Sharpton Pope! Just because we don't like Obama or think he has enough experience does not make us Bigots....just intelligent voters!

      • Posted By: no bigots here @ 07/17/2008 10:50:44 AM

Are you so naieve to think that there have been no bigots posting on these blogs? Where have you been? The point is that on the 15th I didn't see any bigotry being used either. Of course you are going to use conventional wisdom, and make an informed choice. You took things out of context with the one sentence. I have never seen muslimsforpresidents say anything about how to vote. The group was commenting about one day in time. Today I have seen one bigot post votenoobama. So if they said today the same thing that only one bigot posted, would that put things in better context?

Enter Your CommentPersonally, I am quite tired of the race BS. It was Obama himself that brought it up back in June! Not John Sydney Mccain, not the Republicans not anyone else but BO. Colin Powell a fine man with experience, Condi Rice a fine secretary of State, I would vote for either of these fine individuals before I would vote for someone with less than 150 days yes that's right folks 150 days in the US Senate! it's really quite astonishing that BO has the most Liberal record in the :US Senate and he is the democratic nominee. I last heard that John Sydney Mccain is now considering Condi Rice as VP. He'll get the black vote and many women and Clinton voters as well. LOL

Yes he is fading and fast....his flip flopping on FISA and his nagging to get us to teach our kids Spanish are some reasons but the real reason is people are now seeing he is all talk...and that he will do or say anything to get power....he is a politician and not a "new" kind either but the worst kind. While African Americans will turn a blind eye since he's "one of them"(he could smoke crack while urinating on an American Flag and they would still vote for him!) the rest of the color spectrum are waking up and becoming very disappointed in their nominee.

That's a curious list you put together there. Tell me, whenever someone makes a claim about most Americans supporting Obama or some ideal in his campaign, do you ask whether the "most" in that comment includes "trailer trash Americans" and "American bigots?"

I also can't help but wonder what you mean by trailer trash. Are the working class and poor people who live in trailers because they can't afford to rent an apartment or buy a house "trailer trash?" What about people like those in Louisiana who have been living in FEMA trailers ever since their homes were destroyed by hurricanes or floods -- are they "trailer trash?" Do you think that people in general who live in trailer parks are "trailer trash?" Once again, I am surprised at how prejudiced bunch some supporters of He Who Will End All Division can be.

so let me put out some names of reasonable people who have posted reasonably over the last six months. You will see comments that are sometimes amusing, funny and sometimes off the wall. They are good people who want to share their opinion without the racebait, bigotry, slander, antisemetic postings that unfortunately occur.

Sharenews is fun to watch blog, muslimsforpresidents are three muslims, two jews and one christian scientist using the same name to blog with six different perspectives of life. We also have yourself, lori w, and pia will start your list. They are repubs, and dems, but there is none of the bs, they are adults, have opinions that are to their liking, and have agreed to disagree. Keep watching and listening. There are several people who blog to watch out for bigots like myself, hdavidson, marksgershenson, muslimsforpresidents, and many others who become concerned when bigotry and racism pops its ugly head. Enjoy blogging! :-)

Well, the intros are nice, I suppose, but you are still coming across in a very off-putting way by talking down to people whom you think are newcomers -- you don't really know, after all, who has been lurking here for a while or who drops in from time to time and comments without being a "regular."

I am not a Newsweek comment junkie, and I have no interest in becoming a regular. I read the articles (when I can stomach them), and once in a while a comment catches my eye that gets me started. I post for a few days, and then I get tired of playing ASCII whack-a-mole here and stick to my preferred Internet hangouts instead (or better yet, I close my web browser and get some work done or turn off the computer and go interact in person with flesh-and-blood human beings). So, once again, as well-meaning as your introductions and speechifying may be, the former wasn't really necessary, and the latter wasn't really appropriate.

And when some jerk comes behind you and rips you apart, I will not defend your honor either. Oh well onward and upward. Enjoy posting, ask sharenews what it is like to be torn apart by certain bloggers if you don't believe me. Have fun, Ciao

Suit yourself, but I doubt that you will need to worry about "walking on eggshell" with me (an amusing remark in itself, since you seem to think that posting in this little corner of the Internet is far more of a privilege and serious business than I do) for much longer. Seeing as the comments for this article have degenerated beginning with your lecture into a meta-discussion about the online equivalent of a clique in a public Internet forum full of anonymous posters, I think that it is about time to stick a fork in here, 'cause it appears to be done or very nearly so.

The six of us find it a privilage to be able to express opinions, and enjoy our discussions with Sharenews. It was the six of us who brought up the newspost of Viagra and McSame. No bigots here means well, and now I turn it over to the philosopher of the six of us.

When you hold or feel animosity towards a fellow blogger, please be assured that we are all equal here. I suggest when posters like No bigots post something, it comes from his heart, which may not sound like it, but it is in the right place.

So take it easy, enjoy posting, he seems to be the type that will call people out on their bs, especially when a blogger is a racist, or an idiot. As I suggest to you and him at the same time, breathe deeply and relax, appreciate your life. Go to a zen place, and say to yourself, there is nothing personal being said to me. The guy maybe over-the-top, but who isn't with the times we live in.

Have a very nice evening, and enjoy life without worrying about little things. Your philosophy sounds like you are about the same age as my grandmother. I would tell her the same thing too.

"Your philosophy sounds like you are about the same age as my grandmother."

Why do I have a sneaking suspicion that you think that your grandmother's philosophy is wrong?

What on earth do you think that my philosophy is?

Would I be wrong to guess that you somehow associate that philosophy with "old" and "old" with "bad," "ignorant," "stupid," or some other pejorative of your choice?

Is your grandmother a member of the incredibly aged, infirm, and senile Generation X?

By the way, I hold no animosity towards "no bigots here." I just thought the comment was dumb, and I said so. Thanks for the intervention, though, I guess.

A person with absolutely no sense of humore, my gosh, muslimsforpresidents philosopher or whatever tries to make things lighter for everyone. It okay, you will take everything literal, rip it apart and try to analyze what every word means, and by gosh if one word seems tilted, or slanted just slightly that is not to your liking, the panic starts in. Relax and enjoy life a little bit.

If you read the groups prior posting whomever posts talks about taking chill pills, breathing, running around the block, trading place with a dog and live in the dog house, etc. Good thing they didn't say to see a psychiatrist. They have even said that to bloggers. Nobody freaked out. I find it funny that I am called a guardian angel by them. Have a terrific day.

Panic, no; disagreement, yes. Also, this is the Internet, and words are the currency of the realm. As such, I will be trading in words during my stay here, as that is the only form of commerce available in this particular forum.

As for my sense of humor, you seem to be assuming that my verbal sparring here does not supply me with any amusement.

You are new to postings, I have been around the block and know who is a bigot and who isn't. I have read postings by many bloggers over the last six months. I can tell you every name who posts reasonably, or does not. I was responding to john cain, the way he has written over the last week. Unfortunately you have taken what I have said out of context.

You don't have to defend him for his sake. Rather, read all the blogs and you will understand my context after what he has said. I am very sensitive to Katrina, poor people, rich people, and anyone else inbetween. Unfortunately you will never know me personally, nor would I expect you to understand all that is said by me. You are on a learning curve. Watch when other postings occur and see if I do that to everyone, or over a very select few. I will entertain discussion with you once you track and trend me for several weeks. And I will entertain discussion with only a select few people who are reasonable.

          • Posted By: IELeibowitz @ 07/17/2008 12:57:19 AM

Oh, please, that was just downright silly. If you don't want to respond, then don't respond. Giving someone a lecture, however, about how you won't respond because of your self-regard for how your own longevity and frequency of posting on a frackin' Internet forum trumps his or hers is very small.

You posted a comment in a public forum on the Web site of a news rag that has over 10 million unique visitors in a quarter. Anyone with a browser, an e-mail address, and the good sense not to violate Newsweek's terms of service can respond to you without regard to your lofty station as a long-time commenter. Do get over yourself, and if don't want your comments to be interpreted more broadly than I did yours, then maybe you should take more care in typing them next time.

an antiwar speech Obama delivered in Chicago in 2002 when he was an Illinois senator claimed U.S. troops serving alongside his grandfather during World War II liberated the Auschwitz Nazi death camp.

One problem, the U.S. Army did not liberate Auschwitz, which is in southern Poland and was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1945. America liberated the Nazi concentration camps of Buchenwald in Germany and Mauthausen-Gusen in Austria.

This goes along with his Selma speech were he claims that he was concived during the march. The problem with that is he was born in 61, the marches were in 65. I guess he doesn't want the facts to get in the way of a good story! I can't trust him to do what he say.

    • Posted By: IELeibowitz @ 07/16/2008 3:50:04 PM

I don't know if Obama's grandfather served in WWII or liberated any of the concentration or death camps, but I know that Auschwitz and Buchenwald do get confused by people talking about their relatives' service in that war. I was talking to someone just recently who made that same mistake, so I'm willing to cut Obama some slack if it turns out that his grandfather took Buchenwald.

As for the Selma speech, he did not quite say that he was conceived there (though he left it open to that interpretation), but Obama did claim that his parents met because of the march that took place there four years after he was born. It was a very stirring series of paragraphs in the speech on why he could claim Selma as home -- stirring, but not true. One cannot as easily chalk up this bit of historical fiction to an honest mistake as one can the Auschwitz/Buchenwald confusion.

Obama stating in 2002, "My grandfather signed up for a war the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed, fought in Patton's Army. He saw the dead and dying across the fields of Europe; he heard the stories of fellow-troops who first entered Auschwitz and Treblinka. He fought in the name of a larger freedom, part of that arsenal of democracy that triumphed over evil, and he did not fight in vain. I don't oppose all wars."

The grandfather, Stanley Dunham, did not sign up for the U.S. army "the day after Pearl Harbor was bombed."

Army records showing Dunham signed up June 18, 1942 ??? six months after Pearl Harbor.

In his autobiography, "Dreams of My Father," Obama states his grandfather never engaged in combat.

"Gramps returned from the war never having seen real combat, and the family moved to California, where he enrolled at Berkeley under the GI bill," he writes. "But the classroom couldn't contain his ambitions, his restlessness, and so the family moved again."

        • Posted By: IELeibowitz @ 07/16/2008 4:26:51 PM

These quotes do indeed show that Obama is playing fast and loose about the facts concerning his grandfather's service in order to spin a good yarn, but I'm going to nitpick and say that the first quote does not claim that his grandfather liberated Auschwitz -- it says that he heard the stories of troops who had, which is not possible unless his grandfather somehow met and could communicate with soldiers of the Red Army (which still makes this particular claim either a mistake or another fabrication).

The creative storytelling by Obama is indeed cause for concern, but make sure that the critiques of his biography are more accurate than his claims about his biography.

IEL, here is the story. I will give Obama the benefit of the doubt about the actual place his uncle was in liberating a concentration camp.

Updated: Obama Talks of Family's Military Service
            From CBS News: Maria Gavrilovic

            EXCERPT:

Obama also spoke about his uncle, who was PART OF THE AMERICAN BRIGADE THAT HELPED TO LIBERATE AUSCHWITZ. He said the family legend is that, upon returning from war, his uncle spent six months in an attic. ???Now obviously, something had really affected him deeply, but at that time there just weren???t the kinds of facilities to help somebody work through that kind of pain,??? Obama said. ???That???s why this idea of making sure that every single veteran, when they are discharged, are screened for post-traumatic stress disorder and given the mental health services that they need ??? that???s why it???s so important.???

Update: Obama's campaign clarified the comments about the candidate's great-uncle liberating Auschwitz, saying Obama was "mistaken," and was referring to Buchenwald, not Auschwitz. ???Senator Obama???s family is proud of the service of his grandfather and uncles in World War II ??? especially the fact that his great uncle was a part of liberating one of the concentration camps at Buchenwald," said spokesman Bill Burton.

Look war stories are often exagerated or changed. I don't believe Obama was lying I believe he probably heard stories told by relatives that had changed over time but the core of the stories is true. is there a tangible difference between a man joining the army the day after pearl harbor and joining at a later time? Aushawitz is far more famous than the other camp in America it is entirely possible and reasonable that people made a mistake in which camp the Uncle entered.

I am not an Obama supporter but we need to take these criticixms of him and look at them honestly. I don't believe he has lied I believe he was told stories which he passed on preserving the core truth without paying particular attention to detail. (It may have been other peoples lack of detail that led to the errors not Baraks.)

    From CNN ticker

A lot of countries haven???t gotten a share of the spotlight at any of this week???s foreign policy-themed presidential campaign events, or shown up in any of the new national security-focused ads: most of the United States??? hemispheric neighbors, for instance, or just about any nation on the African continent.

Rating no fewer than three references in three days: the non-existent state of Czechoslovakia.

That country ??? which ceased to exist in 1993, when it split into two nations, the Czech Republic and Slovakia ??? has now been referred to as a present-day area of concern by two of the most respected current and former Senate foreign policy experts in the space of less than a week. On Monday and Tuesday, it was presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, who said he was worried about recent Russian moves to reduce energy supplies to ???Czechoslovakia.???

On Wednesday it was the Democrats??? turn, as Republicans quickly circulated a clip of former Georgia senator and current VP prospect Sam Nunn making the same slip at a mid-day national security summit, flanked by his party???s presumptive nominee Barack Obama.

??????We in this country are about to, under this government, under the Bush administration, deploy [a] missile defense system in Poland and Czechoslovakia,??? Nunn said at the Indiana event Wednesday.

So far this week, Persia, Yugoslavia and Siam have yet to come up for discussion.

I think what is scary to alot of people it wasn't said once, everyone can make a mistake, but twice in two days the same exact thing was said by McCain. I liked him alot in 2000; there are way too many slips going on by him with his current campaign that raises potential warning flags.

OK, first you say that the article was in jest and one should lighten up about it, and now you say that it points to something scary about McCain. Can you pick one of these lines and stick with it?

            • Posted By: no bigots here @ 07/17/2008 2:31:32 PM

The article is not in jest, however it is quite amusing if you saw the whole article and think in the context that nobody is perfect and Sam Nunn made the exact same error one day later as McCain. Boy you sound cantankerous with your remarks.

Well, anyone can make mistakes, but let's not forget that John McCain was merrily quoted a few weeks back in the Wall Street Journal as saying he doesn't know much about the economy. Given the current state of America's markets and banks, his happy confession of ignorance kind of makes me think of another idiot-in-chief -- the one who is currently driving America into the ground. A vote for Mc Cain is a vote for 4 more years of Bush policies -- 4 more years of misery.

Senator Obama when I read an article about his years at Princeton the article said that while economic analysis was all the rage on campus Senator Obama was studying race and gender issues! I think it would have been better if he would have studied some economics, because this Obama has NO CLUE AS TO OUR ECONOMY AND HOW IT WORKS!

Frankly, I find it refreshing that he acknowledges which areas of policy are his strengths and which ones are his weaknesses. Every single presidential candidate is confronted with this reality, which is where prudential selection of a running mate and, if elected, a Cabinet comes into play.

Has Obama, who mind you has not even completed one complete term as a United States senator, ever honestly spelled out for the electorate in which areas of policy he has shortcomings?

You find it refreshing, I find it worrisome.

Would you prefer that he lie and claim to be an expert in all matters foreign and domestic? I guess that is what people want to hear from their candidates, even though it is patent nonsense to believe such pablum.

IELeibowitz, sorry, what I meant to say was that I find it worrisome that McCain's weakness is the economy.

OK, I can buy that, though I have to wonder what extensive experience Obama has in his resume with regard to the economy that leaves you unworried about any weakness he may have with regard to it.

Hey, I'm the one urging the more shrug-worthy "nobody's perfect" interpretation of these incidents rather than darkly suggesting about the article pointing to something "scary" and raising "potential warning flags." Are you going to tell me that you were just trying to be lightheaded then as well?

                  Hi IEL,

                  This is pretty scary too:

OBAMA SAYS: Dont tell me words dont matter!

OBAMA WORDS: Iran, Cuba, Venezuela -- these countries are TINY compared to the Soviet Union. They DONT pose a serious threat to us!

                  TWO Days later . . .

OBAMA WORDS: Iran is a GREAT threat! Iran is a GREAT threat (REALLY)! Iran is a GREAT threat (I AM NOT KIDDING HERE)!

WHAT does Obama really believe?? What are we supposed to think if he tells us words DO matter and he flip flops on such a major belief issue??.

                    • Posted By: sharenews @ 07/18/2008 3:15:19 PM

Not with this one. The video link above is the same captured statements he made in front of the camera that the Media showed over and over and over (and over) again on TV for two days. First belittling those TINY countries like Iran as not being any serious threat; then when he got backlash he did a complete 180 and said that IRAN was a GREAT threat. Funny what a difference two days make. Now THAT is scary.

                      • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 07/20/2008 8:56:43 PM

What's scarier to me is McCain who may attack Iran if he becomes president.

BUT THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE HIS STRONG SUIT AND HE KEEPS DOING IT. HE MENTIONED THIS FAKE COUNTRY TWICE IN 48 HOURS-NO ONE HAS DONE THAT!............I'M STARTING TO BELEIVE FOREIGN AFFAIRS IS HIS WEAK POINT.

        • Posted By: IELeibowitz @ 07/17/2008 11:30:02 AM

"Fake country?" For crying out loud, Czechoslovakia was an actual state for 74 years. By contrast, people who were born when it split and part of it became the Czech Republic are not even old enough to vote yet.

Look, I'm part Czech, I have even been to Prague, and I still easily slip into calling the Czech Republic "Czechoslovakia." The names are similar, that is what it was called for a very long time, and frankly "Czech Republic" still sounds jarring to my ears. In my experience, many people who came of age before the fall of the Iron Curtain and who had any knowledge of geography beyond the borders of the USA at that time have made this mistake -- repeatedly. Moreover, this segment of the voting population far exceeds the portion that has no memory of a time before the map of Eastern Europe was completely redrawn in the 1990s. In historical terms, Czechoslovakia split a very, very short time ago. Thus, making an issue out of a politician who called the Czech Republic "Czechoslovakia" smacks of petty desperation and may even reflect that person's ignorance of world affairs prior to the 21st century.

I am of Slovak descent and agree with your post 100%. My grandparents (now deceased) continued to call it Czechoslovakia even after it was split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. This is a great example of the Democrats and their mouthpieces in the MSM picking nits.

          • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 07/20/2008 9:00:54 PM

Sharenews, can you please give the man a break over his 57 state nonsense? You know that Obama knows how many states there are. Obama has been campaigning for about a year now, he was exausted when he said that. I suppose you could say, he mispoke.

        • Posted By: no bigots here @ 07/17/2008 10:02:12 AM

Thats why he has Liebermouth by his side because he did not know the difference between Shia, Kurds, etc, and was able to walk around without protection too in Iraq last time he visited so he said.

Sam Nunn the expert made the same error as McCain yesterday. Selective reading. Hmm, again you missed the lighter side of the article which is everybody makes mistakes and not too many people are geographical wizards. Who is grasping at straws?

Senator McJackie the McJokeman, will prove to be even less serious and dignified in the role of Smirker-in-Chiefthen then what we have on the table right now. If that were even possible.

Last week, in response to a serious question about Iran, the Republican presumptive nominee joked about killing Iranians with weaponized cancer. This week, it's news about a joke involving gorillas and rape.

"Did you hear the one about the woman who is attacked on the street by a gorilla, beaten senseless, raped repeatedly and left to die? When she finally regains consciousness and tries to speak, her doctor leans over to hear her sigh contently and to feebly ask, 'Where is that marvelous ape?"

In days past, it's been jokes about wife-beating, bombing Iran, Chelsea Clinton's looks, and Alzheimer's Disease. Based on these precedents, I can only imagine Senator McCain's forthcoming zingers about still-births, burn victims and Thalidomide.

Get a clue McCain Women don't like to be beaten and raped and also don't like to made jokes of on the subject

Wow Ho all of you people who are thinking about voting for "McCain't and isn't able to Govern"

So you want another Smirking Chimp for your next president?

Extend your non-funny PAIN with your vote for McCain

No wonder all you Liberals and lefties are SOOO angry! You can't ever laugh at life! Give me a break. Hey did you hear the one about the democratic presidential candidate. Al Gore? Hell had he won we'd all be driving our bikes to our minimum wage jobs while he Al Gore flies around in his private jet. Ha Ha Ha

Poor poor SoetorObama. He just can't seem to close anything.

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 07/14/2008 6:18:50 PM

McCain's position on Iraq has been based on a clear eyed appraisal of the situation and an understanding of the military organization and structure. I was against the war even before it started, but we do have an obligation there now that we have gutted their infrastructure. Would I rather we were spending it on our infrastructure? Absolutely!!! But that isn't the question that must be answered.

    • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/14/2008 8:52:13 PM

It's a matter of taking responsibility. McCain knows it. Seems like Obama is even getting that message, with his recent NAACP comments. It comes down to who do you trust more, and I trust McCain. His judgment was right when it came to the Surge and its right when he talks about building more Nuclear Power.

      • Posted By: chindognyc @ 07/14/2008 11:44:38 PM

Do we really want to keep relying on Nuclear Power? It would help our dying economy, but if we can find another way, I say lets do it.

THE SURGE WORKING IS LIKE GETTING A HIGH "F" ON YUR REPORT CARD.4000+ AMERICANS DEAD, MANY MORE HANDICAPPED, BROKE-50% UNDER THE AGE OF 24 AND AFGHANASTAN IS GOING ABSOLUTELY BONKERS.-SAY IT WITH ME BOYS AND GIRLS-

1.WE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE-
2.IRAQ AND AFGHANASTAN ARE NOT THE SAME.
3.BIN LDEN AND SADDAM ARE/WERE NOT THE SAME. A MATTER OF FACT THEY ARE/WERE MORTAL ENEMIES BASED ON BASIC LOGIC OF A DICTATOR . READ UP.
        4. AL QUEDA WASN'T IN IRAQ UNTIL WE DECIDED TO GO OVER THERE AND MAKE 4000+ OF ARE BRAVEST AMERICANS TARGETS.

MADE BY AND ENDORSED BY THE BI- PARTISAN 911 COMMISSION....... I HEARD THEY EVEN WROTE A BOOK ABOUT IT. WORD ON THE STREET IS THAT IF MCCAIN BECOMES PRESIDENT THEY WILL PUT IN MOTION TO WRITE ANOTHER BOOK BASED ON THE SAME IGNORANCE AND STUPIDITY BUT THE NAMES WILL BE DIFFERENT AND IT WILL BE BASED OUT OF IRAN. SOUNDS EXCITING!!

        • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/16/2008 5:19:55 AM

Word is Obama is shaping up to take a lot of Bush's positions lately, FISA, Faith Based Initiative, Surge in Afganistan....

      • Posted By: HDavidson @ 07/14/2008 9:04:14 PM

No it's a matter of EGO, and we all know it. Iraq has asked us to GET OUT or SET A TIME TABLE to GET OUT and Bush and McCain say "ah hooey" They do NOT want a McCain driver 100yrs in Iraq...niether does America. You peak about "responsibility", what about Afghanistan and those who ACTUALLY ATTACKED US?

        • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/14/2008 9:15:14 PM

Iraq would never be in the position to ask us to leave if Obama had had his way and called all the troops back in March like hie originally. Obama was wrong admit it.

          • Posted By: HDavidson @ 07/14/2008 9:21:47 PM

here it comes....HERE IT COMES!......THE POINT!.....AWE YOU COMPLETELY MISSED IT! Obama has said from day one 16 months, he would begin a 16 MONTH withdrawl, BASED ON what the REAL Generals (not the bush puppets) advise.
So try to get the point Iraq wants us GONE, BUSH/CHENEY/MCCAIN/LIEBERMAN...want OIL and money for Halliburton/Blackwater.

            • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/16/2008 5:18:27 AM

No...Obama produced legislation to have the troops all gone by March 2008. The Surge is working...you like Obama just have your head in the sand because you know it doesn't look good to admit that your wrong.
Yes Obama says 16 months....then he says he will listen to the Generals then he says he wont he will force them to withdraw all troops in 16 months...now he says he might have to leave a "residual force" to hunt Al-Qaeda....Now Obama wants to use the Surge strategy in Afganistan... Obama seems to like taking Bush positions on a lot of things now doesn't he?
