The most remarkable thing about this poll to me isn't the 3 point lead, its the favorable/unfavorables. In mid-July McCain has a 55% favorable rating and Obama has a 56% rating. Both are around 23% plus favorable. I have spent my entire life watching elections in which this country agonized between the lesser of two evils. Its a rarity for either candidate to be above 50% by November. Both parties got it right for once.

    Dear Obamaheads,
Where are you? You always disappear when bad news for the savior comes up. Bet Newsweak buries this article in less then 2 days. Note how the praise to Obama articles stick around for months?
Where ya at Obamaheads? Speak on your double digit lead. Oh happy days lmao

    • Posted By: TheVigil @ 07/12/2008 3:09:01 PM

      I'm right here.

A lot of us "Obamaheads" - personally, I define myself as an Obama supporter - were never crowing about the supposed double-digit lead in the first place, because we're just not that partisan, and we're focusing on issues more than polls. We have lives to live, jobs to work...just not that fixated on poll numbers. I suspected this particular poll was suspect anyway, since none of the other polls by other news sources corroborated it.

Despite your notion that all of a sudden I'm going to wilt and hide my face away, in reality, I'm right here, consistently and stably putting forth my support for my chosen candidate just as I always have been.

If you are focusing on issues, the Hussein should scare you silly. He has not held firm on any, issues he so strongly held in the primary season. NOT ONE. Do you really think $4-5-6-7-?/gallon gas, is actually GOOD for you and your family? Hussein does. His own words were, "I wish it had not went up so quickly." He is against drilling here. He is against nuclear power plants. He is against clean coal technology. He is against oil shale refining. He is against ANYTHING, that would loosen our dependence, on his mohammed brothers oil. You can believe it or not, but I truly think, his #1 objective is to hand Iraq to Iran. What is in it for him??? Who knows, but it is pretty clear, that is his goal.

John McCain is honorable. John McCain Loves America, with his entire being.

Hussein Obama has not character, conviction, loyalty, or honor. Look under his bus.
Hussein Obama LOVES America. Like O.J. LOVED Nicole.

Obama is not against nuclear technology, drilling, or clean coal technology. He is new drilling leases not against drilling. There is over 68 million acres of federal land that has been leased for oil drilling that has not been explored or drilled, so why give the oil companies access to new lands if they do not use the leases they have already.

You know 'holyroller.' your type, for the most part, is a dying breed. The scare tactics hot and air you spew
have probably worked for the last time on the national stage. The poor excuse of a president that you and others prop up as genuine, didn't really fool anyone. It's just that the redneck - laced Supreme Court became activists and installed him. John McCain, will not likely be elected POTUS, in your lifetime. If you think the American people will sit by and embrace the continued demise of this country with the likes of McSameness...Get over it now and save yourself some heartburn in November.

I stand corrected - today's Gallup tracking poll is Obama down 1 point and McCain up 1 since yesterday, with a 4 point difference. But if you look at their trend for the past month, its never been a 15 point spread, the most Gallup had was 6 point difference.

All this endless speculation at each new turn of events - just to cover for the fact that there is no real news.

I imagine these polls will flip-flop back and forth for the next few months until we all go to the polls. The real test will be who votes for whom.

I hope it's Obama but if McTaint wins then he'll be stuck with the huge mess brought on by his buddy George W. And the fingerpointing will keep the same direction - downward - as the GOP spirals out of control and into the abyss. We will see the worst catastrophe unfold with McTaint in office - World War III - as the war mongers will use their war-mongering puppet to instigate a war on behalf of Israel to take over Iran's oil reserves. And we'll have Armageddon, as the Right-Wing Nuts believe.

The past Newsweek poll that showed Senator Obama with a 15 point lead, was completely out of step with other polls that showed him 2 to 5 points over McCain. The latest Newsweek poll is just now consistent with others - Gallup, CNN, Rasmussen. The Gallup daily tracking poll actually has Obama trending up. The best site for seeing various polls is realclearpolitics.com. In reality when one looks at several top polling organizations and their two to three month tracking, there has been no "precipitous decline" in support for Obama, his poll numbers have been consistent with the exception of the strange Newsweek polling.

Know why McCain wants to distance himself from former Senator Phil Gramm? It's not because of Gramm's obnoxious remarks calling Americans "a nation of whiners" who are in "a mental recession." Those remarks were so ascerbic that they may've been made just to give McCain an excuse to distance himself from Gramm. This issue is a lot deeper than it looks on the surface.

When Gramm was a Senator he was Chairman of the Banking Committee. He pushed through the legislation known as the "Enron Loophole." This loophole allowed US investment banks to bypass Federal regulations governing futures trading, and is the reason why investment banks were able to falsely inflate the prices of oil, wheat, corn and other commodities through massive futures trading, causing your costs of gas, heating oil and food to go through the roof.

Gramm also created the Gramm-Leach-Biley Act, which got rid of the laws that seperate banking, insurance and brokerage activities in America. The Gramm Act was touted as a new way to protect consumer privacy, but the real meat on the Act's bones was banking deregulation. Essentially, this Act did away with laws written after the Great Depression to protect us from another Wall Street/Banking Industry collapse. That's right, Gramm stripped the system of it's safe guards nine years ago, and guess what? The value of the dollar has nose-dived, four major economic institutions have failed, Wall Street is unstable, and we are in a worsening recession.

Notably, the US investment banks that gained the most from the Enron Loophole and from the Gramm Act contributed more than a million dollars to Gramm's campaign.

Currently Gramm is Vice Chairman of UBS, the Swiss Bank that came up with the idea of "death bonds." Worse, though, UBS is involved in a scam where they sold auction rate securities to American customers. Auction rate securities are supposed to be as safe as cash, but the way UBS did it, the fees garnished by their in-house investment bankers were intentionally higher than the return on the securities, ripping off their American customers. The Massachusetts Attorney General has already filed charges against UBS, and private brokers world-wide have dropped UBS stock. UBS is forecasted to lose 82.91% of it's value in 2008. We are talking about the corporate bank where Gramm is Vice Chairman. Looking at his track record there and at the havoc he has wrought on the US economy through the Senate Banking Committee, it's clear that either Gramm is a criminal or grossly incompetent.

Now McCain wants nothing to do with Gramm, wants us to forget Gramm has been a key player on McCain's team. Gramm was McCain's campaign CO-CHAIR and LEADING ECONOMIC ADVISOR. Previously, McCain had said that he planned to appoint Gramm as SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY.

With Gramm as McCain's leading economic advisor, now you know why economists and analysts say that McCain's economic policy plans are untenable.

I don't want another dumb playboy type running (ruining) our country.

I'll take Obama's experience over McTaint's any day of the week. His intellect and deeply thoughtful, diverse and educated background are such a startling contrast to the moron in the White House who McTaint, bless his heart, must "copy" for fear of his own political livelihood.

No more mediocre morons ruining our country - get the best, the brightest and the most forward-thinking, the most respected overseas. We don't need to be the redneck hicks of the Western World any longer.

No you're not a racist, you're just grasping at straws, because you have nothing but fear and smear left. America is tired of your divisive politics, that seeks to raise fear in people's mind by using the name Hussein, which you are using to conjure up the image of Saddam, as a way to make Obama seem scary and foreign.

It's transparent, it's a tactic that only works on the ignorant and the fearful.

Obama supporters' use of the epithet "racist" is not a catch-all phrase used against all opponents. I think using someone's name in a derogatory fashion, when that name sounds a little foreign (which I would debate), certainly constitutes at least a tinge of racism. I don't mind political debate, as long as it's grounded in substantive policy and not insults based out of irrational fear.

Obama supporters' use of the epithet "racist" is not meant to be a catch-all word against all opponents. Using someone's name in a derogatory fashion such as the first poster used it I think constitutes at least a tinge of racism. I don't mind opposition, as long as the opposition can lay out a clear argument to debate policy, not using some insults grounded in fear.

Glow Fading....ummm..no...how about inconsistent demographic sampling?

Your samples are very different from the first poll. Why the increase in the number of indivduals polled who were aged 60 and over? Yet even with an increase in the sampling of senior Americans, Obama still leads McCain by 3. I'd be curious to see Newsweek use the sample demographics from the poll prior to the current one.

  • Posted By: maryfromabluestate @ 07/12/2008 5:49:08 PM

Hmmm, or maybe the fact that your polling sample compared to June skews older and whiter has something to do with the change. Why are you not able to read your own polls properly?

  • Posted By: George from Westerville @ 07/12/2008 3:06:29 PM

For all of those folks that declare that Newsweek is biased in favor of Obama, note this article and the title. Lots of name calling and ridiculous comments on this forum. We have two candidates that are decent people, to try to deify or demonize either is assanine. I happen to think that Obama is young, energetic, articulate and intelligent and is the best choice OF THE TWO CANDIDATES WE HAVE TO CHOOSE FROM. I respect McCain's past service to our country, but he seems to be an angry, confused individual, not someone who should lead our country and not someone who will fix the economy and restore our standing in the world. Do I think there is racism in this country and Obama would be leading by double digits if he was not black ... you betcha. I knew all along that this would be a close race, the party of Karl Rove and Dick Cheney is not going down without a fight.

Obama peaked in February and has been trending downward in every objective measure since: fund-raising, polling, and votes. Why is the media just now figuring this out?

  • Posted By: jjaffie @ 07/12/2008 4:32:57 PM

Hey Media Boys, start covering McCain like you do Obama and McCain would be out of the race. Barack cannot scratch his nose with his left hand and then five minutes later scratch it with his other hand without 100 Major headlines talking about Obama's Nasal Flip-Flop. McCain- as this last week has proved- can say or do just about anything and it MIGHT be a footnote on the days headlines, but hey at least everyone will know that Obama's 10 year old daughter sometimes is a little embarrased by her father.

McCain's campaign had an elderly librarian removed from an 'Open' campaign event for merely holding up a sign that read "McCain = Bush"

As recently as 3 months ago McCain denied the US was in OR headed towards a recession. This week a top Financial Advisor to McCain, Phil Gramm, called Americans who are worried about their financial security a "nation of whiners" suffering from a "mental recession". I guess he's referring to the 438,000 (net loss) Americans who lost their jobs this year and the 1,250,000 Americans who have had foreclosures filed on their homes through June of this year.

Social Security is "an absolute disgrace" according to McCain, I guess that's why it has successfully been helping retirees for almost 80 years. Yeah it has problems, but those are not design flaws, it's cause the politicians in Washington can't keep their hands out of the kitty.

"Maybe that's a way of killing them" was McCain joking response to the unusually large shipments of cigarettes to Iran. McCain also said on a different occasion, "You know that old Beach Boys song, Bomb Iran? Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran." He has no interest in finding a diplomatic solution. He wants war and says so at every opportunity.

McCain wants war with Iran. What will that do to oil prices when the Iranian oil production of just under 4 million barrels a day is interrupted?

McCain said that offshore drilling would have NO IMMEDIATE IMPACT on gas prices. 18 days later McCain pushes for Offshore Drilling telling a group that offshore drilling "would be very helpful in the short term in resolving our energy crisis." Experts predict that it would take 22 years to see a 7% rise in domestic production from offshore drilling and 5 to 7 years before the they start producing their first barrels of oil.

    • Posted By: jjaffie @ 07/12/2008 4:35:33 PM

      Continued.......
McCain also conveniently changed the details of his POW story to pander to the local city's football team. Now how can we take you word for your military experiences if you change the facts and will not release your miltiary records? Faith? Not for the McCain who cheated on both of his wives & then lied about it.

McCain also admitted on film (which he later denied ever saying) that "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should." In another interview McCain stated regarding economics, "I still need to be educated." I guess that why he needs Phil Gramm around to educate him on the economy.
Add that to his graduating at the BOTTOM ONE PERCENT of his class at the Naval Academy and his boast about educating Obama who graduated Magna *** Laude from Harvard with a Doctorate in Law (JD).

Wife beating is just a punchline to McCain who recently said jokingly, "And I stopped beating my wife just a couple of weeks ago." Maybe he stopped because he didn't like her wearing too much makeup as evidenced when he yelled at his wife, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c***."

McCain is a disgrace on all fronts. Sure Obama has his problems, but those pale in camparison to McCain's. Maybe that explains how Obama is leading McCain in McCain's home state of Arizona by up to 3 points (within the margin of error).

As and ender, McCain's response to all of his idiotic statements was, "I'm very aware that, from time to time, some words of mine will be taken out of context. I'm not going to change the way our campaign is."

  • Posted By: owengleach @ 07/12/2008 1:50:24 PM

Such rapid change in three weeks is most likely caused not by sampling error but by sampling inconsistency. Of course Newsweek (notorious for overstating democrat leads) never reveals the percentage of "democrats" in each of the polls. My guess is big overstatement in poll #1, followed by realistic percentage in poll #2. Until Newsweek is willing to reveal the variation in party affiliation from one poll to the next and refuses to "adjust" for these variations, their polls will vary wildly and never produce trackable results.

    • Posted By: TheVigil @ 07/12/2008 1:55:35 PM

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when I saw a double-digit lead posted by Newsweek while everyone else was reporting 3-6%. I think the first poll was just wildly off-base. I wish the media would pay more attention to the issues instead of fomenting "who's winning" poll-hype.

      • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 07/12/2008 2:33:48 PM
