This is pretty straightforward stuff. While tacking to the cenrter is a common general election strategy it works because in the past the candidates had a record to speak for their actual positions or "leanings" including a track record of taking risks if one applies [as it does w/McCain]. In the primary, to use a phrase, Obama "talked the talk, but its anyone's guess if he'll wal the talk." Absent evidence when there are two self styled independents, one WITH a record & one w/ a resume that while iimpressive is so thin it could give you a paper cut, who are most people going to trust in a time of war AND a bad economy?

Well I am not going to trust the candidate of the party that got us into a useless war (Iraq) and screwed up the economy. Especially when that candidate has stated that he will continue the same failed policies of the current administration.

Barack Obama is not fit nor is he qualified by any meaningful experience to be POTUS. Finally, the groupthink mentality of change at all costs is hitting smackdab against the reality of what the powers that be in the Democratic party have done to this country. Thinking they were slick, Brazile, Dean, Pelosi and the other losers jumped from a workhorse to a showhorse. Obama is nothing but glitz and vapor, and now that the mist is settling, people are starting to see him as he really is.. Super-delegates, show some leadership and change back to Hillary Clinton before this race is lost.

Perhaps if we could begin to see some debates and some VP picks then the polls might begin to have some meaning but right now there is just too many missing pieces for most people to make a clear decision. These polls are too early in the game and are essentially meaningless.

    • Posted By: raddave @ 07/11/2008 7:31:02 PM

I agree with you on that one. The Election cycle has gotten way too long and there are way too many polls way too early.

  • Posted By: avidobserver @ 07/11/2008 7:29:07 PM

Seriously!! Who exactly are being polled? With McCain's disastrous campaign and image problem, I baffles me to know that he's still even in the race.

Flip-flopping. Obama changes his name and his dresses more than a prom queen does. He is suspect for trying to please too many people at one. Honestly, Barry, do you think that we can't see beyond your back-flips, flip-flops or what ever you want to call them. I don't trust you. JFK didn't dump his Spritual Advisor, the POPE, because he didn't agree with everything the Vatican handed down. Puhleeze. And do I believe that you have the backbone to stand up to a Chief of Staff and other Military might without caving. No Way. You better beef up on some Military Protocol before you want to be my Commander-In-Chief. I believe that in the guise of Peace you will cave to Bad, Bad, Men in this world. That you will meet with Terrorists as Chamberlain sat down with Hitler. You might have some heavy grey matter between the ears, but my friend, you don't have the miles, the wisdom or the guts to make the right call when the manure hits the fan. JFK had to face down eight of thirteen Cabinet members during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Here's a tip, read Profiles of Courage, do sixteen weeks of boot camp at Quantico or Parris Island, and you just might get my Vote. I love Teddy Kennedy, and I think he a great man, but he didn't fight WWII, Korea or Vietnam. And Mr. McCain has the worst case of PTSD that I have ever seen in my life.
Sirs, with all respect, I am fifty years young, and the only vote I will cast this November will be for My Uncle, Robert Lewis Simpson, who was the first Air Force Pilot killed in 'Nam and is on the first panel of The Wall. Irish, (Put 'em up) Jane. American since 1756

    • Posted By: jane.simpson.wilson @ 07/11/2008 7:04:49 PM

I meant that Obama does not have the spine to stand up to the Military. Correction. And he is trying to please too many people at once.

      • Posted By: sharenews @ 07/11/2008 7:25:52 PM

Yes, Obama has become transparent which the polls are now really starting to reflect. New name I heard was Barack Onobounca!

All of Obama's character issues do matter, main stream Americans have a severe mistrust of BHO and its not linked to racism, rather it is linked to his very poor judgement (Wright, Aires, gun and religion comments,Iran and every other dumb thing that he has said. When he says something it takes a week for his campaign to explain because he usually screws it up. He is a good speaker but when asked tough questions he cannot handle it. He really is a typical phony Chicago politician, do we need him as president HELL NO! All of you first time voters better figure out what this empty suit is before its to late.

Obama cannot avoid the core issue: His long-term association with Wright and other radical groups. Americans cannot take the risk to elect a quasi-terminator who may be programmed to profile and licensed to kill.

the June 20th poll wasn't flawed, it was FIXED with questions that caused that result

The lead is best represented on Realclearpolitics.com average of all the polls. That way, the fixed polls are not as significant as they are averaged in with the other 7.....

Another close race in November. Look at the battleground states.

  • Posted By: dwschwartz @ 07/11/2008 6:57:21 PM

The Newsweek poll of a few weeks ago was a total anomaly and was far outside the average of all polls. Newsweek should cowboy up and admit their poll was flawed.

  • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 07/11/2008 6:55:48 PM

As the issues become more important Obamas approval will become more in line with the approval of HIS PARTY which...has single digit approval for it's leadership in the Congress!
And the closer to November we move the more imortant the issues will be! And McCain is the come-from -behind expert of the political world.
Obama should stay close to his liberal base and wage the Americans Suck First campaign as reaching out to the middle and to moderates this last week looks like risky behavior for Obama!
It's a long way to November. So many rocks and shoals! The race is only getting started.Prosthetic nuts might not be enough!

Now Oprahma is talking about sponsoring a NASCAR team? Oh, my, how Presidential. What a dolt.

Another obvious Newsweek trick. Newsweek is trying to deprive McCain of underdog status. Obama is ahead in some key states: MI, PA, OH, FL, WI, MN, VA, CO, MO.. Even Georgia t is leaning towards Obama. McCain has a lot of work to do.

    Daily Presidential Tracking Poll

Friday, July 11, 2008 Email to a FriendAdvertisement

    Obama 43%
    McCain 42%

2 points difference if leaners included.

The race for the White House is getting a bit closer. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Friday shows Barack Obama???s lead over John McCain down to a statistically insignificant single percentage point, 43% to 42%.

Prior to today, Obama had enjoyed at least a four-point advantage every day since Hillary Clinton dropped out of the race over a month ago. This is the first time his support has fallen below the 45% level since May 31.

Obama could be down in the polls, because I may not be the only former obama supporter who summarily stopped the (small) financial support I had been able to give out of my retirement monthly income.I watched in utter dismay as my former "hero" began to show the other side of his face. What caused me to unsubscribe from his website was 1st) his about face on FISA and more to the point 2nd his total disrespect for General Clark's statement about McBush's qualifications(???) for the presidency..That showed me an appalling lack of moral principles and courage..HIs subsequent pandering nauseayes me enough to want to hurl at his antics...Politics of CHANGE..??...me-thinks NOT. Geez, has it ever occured to the political geniuses that "independents" identify with candidates who are INDEPENDENT, instead of flip-floppers?

  • Posted By: mapolick@aol.com @ 07/11/2008 6:12:33 PM

Funny, today, CNN is stating a 9 pt lead for Obama. So WHY the descrepency?
You know, after the last two days old man McCain's number will really plummet. with:
-His top economic advisor telling the American people that the bad economy is all in our heads.
-That Social Security, where all of us hard workers have been paying into, Is a Disgrace.
-He wants to cut taxes for Corporation but swears He will balance the budget.
    - Will keep spending $10B a month for Iraq, no matter what, until we can leave with "honor".
-Has admitted he really has no expertise on the American Economy.
    - Will reinburse men for Viagara as part of their health insurance, but gives nothing to women for contraception.
-Was still married to his second wife when he filed for a marriage license with histhird and current marriage to Cindy.
    Need I say more?

I have always thought Obama's lead was overstated. It shouldn't be a close race, but it will be. Obama will also need to turn out a lot of new voters and energize younger voters.

In the end, I think the race is still Obama's to lose because the "fear card" isn't as effective when the real (and much more likely) fear is that McCain won't change course enough from the disastrous Bush years. When the actuals are as bad as they have been recently, it just becomes too hard to convince voters that the other guy would somehow be worse. The U.S. is about 15-20 years away from becoming a third world country and we can't keep going the way we have.
