in the prior poll showing obama up by 15, Newsweek had more respondents id'ing themselves as Democrats, consistent with poll after poll about the percentange of Americans currently identifying themselves as Democrats vs those identifing themselves as Republicans.
In this most recent poll showing Obama up only 3, they sampled the same % of Democrats and Republicans. No polls show that breakdown in party id among the current national electorate.

According to Rasmussen, O'bama holds a one point edge but in the next paragraph they say "McCain is now viewed favorably by 56% of voters, Obama by 54%."And if Newsweek polled more Dems than Republicans, as they usually do, and still O'bama is sinking, well then..... You left wing anti-American kooks know that Most Americans will not vote for socialist like Barry Hussein O'bama who surrounds himself with America haters like his wife, Rev. Wright Wm. Ayers, etc... And they certainly can see how he changes his lies to suit the voters he is seeking. I hope that Americans can see also that electing these O'bama supporting Democrats is just as bad for America. They polled 315 Repbulicans and 324 Democrats out of 1037 total respondents. In other words, Republicans made up 30.4% of the respondents and Democrats made up 31.2%.

The dynamics of the race haven't changed. The only thing that has changed is that Newsweek decided to poll more Republicans and few Deomcrats than actually exist in the national electoral to sell magazines.-

Catholic schools in Indonesia routinely accept non-Catholic students but exempt them from studying religion. Obama's school documents, though, wrongly list him as being Indonesian.

"We prayed, but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque. But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played," said Adi. -

Unfortunately all the hype the media and press surrounded Obama with was just that hype. He is not the candidate people thought they were voting for. Either that or it was true that in states where Republicans could vote they saw him as the easier one to beat. The Press still protects him from his stupid gaffes though, where they would not anyone else. He used the race card and got away with it. Not only by calling people racist for not voting for him, but calling his competition racist too, while all along he was the one who was racial, notice I didn't use racist.

Obama has enjoyed something akin to "celebrity" status, since he was virtually unknown prior to this campaign. The problem could be that the campaign has been way too long to maintain the giddy glow of stardom -- since Americans tire of their celebrities very quickly.

actually, as someone over 50, female and white, I am an Obama supporter, both voting and donating. I believe the differences between this poll and the last are directly the result of the different type of questions, distinctly directing the answers elicited. Garbage in = Garbage out.

Perhaps it is the biased nature and obvious yellow-journalism of the questions asked that are designed to elicit some desired outcome that account for the difference between this poll and the last?

After reading all of these comments and looking at all of the polls, I think that the Obama campaign should be more than a little scared. It's interesting that with all the good will being lent his campaign, he is still slipping. Plus, Senator McCain isn't exactly making big things happen. This is slow self-destruction of a campaign. I'm not saying that he's going to lose, I'm just saying, amazingly, that he might. Obamanites better put away the balloons and get ready for a fight down to the wire.

This is for the lost Americans. A good candidate changes their position based on experience and present conditions and not on a whelm or for political expediency. Experience takes many weeks, months and years and must be thoroughly analyzed before you decide to change your mind on important issues. Changing your mind in just a few hours or a few days is called flip flopping and that is an appropriate name for it. We need a president that examines history and past practices very carefully before he changes his mind and changes policy for this country. We don't need someone that flows with the tide and looks at polls to make decisions. Yes, we need someone that listens to the people, but in some cases, based on information that can't be made public, the president must use his/her good judgement.
Obama is controlled and told what to say and where he stands on a particular issue by his election staff. These people determine what the public wants to hear or where the other candidate stands on an issue, and then tells Obama what to say to the voters. Obama reads directly from a teleprompter most of the time and says exactly what his staff has come up with. He sounds like a great politician, but in fact he is just a robot with a lot of shrewd politicians behind him who have created a new political figure. Don't get caught up in their rhetoric and make an important decision that you will REGRET for the rest of your life.

less oversight which leads to S @ L, mortgage and loan scandals, war and corporate profiteering, privatization and financial destruction of our social security, and no health care!

The GOP has just had eight years of supply side economics and the economy is not prosperous!
The dollar is fading, the stock market is in the tank, our houses are worth less and less, etc.

If we are in a recession, there is very little doubt that the Democrats, for political purposes, wanted a recession, wished for it, planned it, and caused it. Obama said that the high gas prices were good because it will pressure Americans into conserving energy. The poor white trash that he says he supports is suffering!

During the first 58 months of Bush's term in office, the price of a barrel of oil increased by $22 and a gallon of gasoline increased by $0.64! In the last 20 months of Bush's term in office, since the Democrats took control of Congress, the price of a barrel of oil increased by $94 and a gallon of gasoline increased by $1.96.
Now, who do you think is more responsible for gasoline prices being so high? Let me clue you in! Speculators are accused of being responsible for high oil prices. But, why would they be blamed? Their intelligence tells them that increased US oil drilling will never be allowed under a Democrat controlled Congress and our dependency on foreign crude will continue to rise. They are not stupid!!
Some ignorant Americans are going around saying that oil companies are not drilling on millions of acres that they have leased. That is a lie!! They are drilling dry hole after dry hole. There is not much oil there to be found. The oil companies know where the oil is and where it would be profitable to drill. Why are we telling them where to drill and where not to drill? Because our Congress contains a bunch of elite politicians that can afford high gas prices since the tax payers pay their expenses.
Congress needs to act on legislation immediately to open up offshore drilling and ANWR drilling. This Congress is killing the American people. Their approval rating is down to 9% and if anymore Democrats are elected, it could go to 0%. If the U.S. commits to using our own resources rather than depending on foreign countries, the price of oil would drop immediately! OPEC cannot afford to lose a big spender like the U.S.! The LOUD AND PROUD AMERICANS need to take action immediately and persuade Congress to get off their hands and accomplish something to help the American people now and in the future.
The Republicans passed an energy bill and Clinton vetoed it. Clinton said that it would take ten years to get the oil to the market. That was twelve years ago and look where we are today. Sound familiar? -

I've been an ardent supporter of Obama's since January. He is disarmingly smart and too honest for his own good. Hopefully people will pull their heads out of the sand before they vote for McSame. How can anyone think Barack is Muslim after the whole reverend Wright fiasco?!

Well the difference between the questions asked in this poll and last month's poll are like night and day. What explains this are the following : 16 questions asked about religion or faith-based iniitatives? Four questions dripping with derision about Obama and Rev Wright, his association on possibly being a muslim, going to an islamic school; his position on faith based policy, and oh let's not forget the leading question: "do you think he changes positions for political reasons?" Meanwhile, No questions about McCain and his changes on positions ( tax cuts for wealthier individuals which he now supports, drilling off the coastlines and in Alaska which he now supports, repeal of Roe Vs Wade which he now supports, support for gay marriage which he now opposes, for the Dream Act but now against, for leaving Iraq if asked to do so by the Iraqis, but now opposed, unless America feels she is ready to leave, etc) I could go on and on.Regardless of whether people like Obama or McCain for president is up to them to decide, but this poll frankly is quite biased against Obama. Sample problems: more independents (357- I ) that democrats or republicans ? Also virtually the same number of republicans as democrats in the samples 324 - D, 315 - R? This is likely not a good sample representation for republicans.
Now by comparison last months poll asked questions about ( who you trust to lead, who will bring change, who will do best on Iraq, who will be better manage the economy, and one question on gay marriage, none on religion). characteristics of the sample (D-51; R-36, I-13)
Newsweek, I don't know what your agenda is but the American people deserve better than this garbage. Did you take alot of heat about last month''s poll results? So now you do a wide swing the other way? You should ask poll questions without suggesting the answers. You should be ashamed.

Obama didn't turn out to be the nominee people voted for. I think a lot of people regretted voting for him because it was a lot of hype and not a lot f substance. We wanted so much to be progressive and historic, we ended up with the wrong candidate.

As an Obama supporter and a progressive one I understan he cannot run on an all liberal agenda, He is carefully picking his positions on a varitey of issues, and yes, he has to appeal to the majority of Americans. He has always said he wants to work with people who do not share his views. In my book that is strength, and wisdom, not weakness, He will always be criticized no matter what views he holds.
