More importantly, if they do assemble information against you , do you have the right to an attorney and will ALL INFORMATION be furnished to your attorney for your defence. Or, will they pull a guantanamo on you and you won't be heard from for many months? The dragnet that the FBI and NSA created after 9-11 didn't net squat. I doubt there was much information obtained that discovered any future highjackers. Instead it netted a boatlode of non-criminal foreigners who overstayed their visas because INS won't get off their backside and process their paperwork.

For all the people who think the government should be takeing care of them, why shouldn't the government be watching them?

Everyone was so surprised by Obama voting for this -- but not me. He was bought and paid for by the communications industry big wigs who have contributed heavily to his campaign. He was just doing what they paid for, giving them retroactive immunity from lawsuits for violating our civil rights.

It's noting but Chicago pay to play politics. The Communications interests paid, and Obama came through for them.

Didnt Sen. McCain vote for the same thing? I gues it o.k. for him because he's a Republican. Guess what Pearsoncrz, Sen. Obama was wrong to support this bill as was Sen. McCain. The people we are fighting are not trying to kill us all. They know thats impossible. There objective is to change the way we live and think. And we are doing exactly what they want. Have we already forgotten how this administration has abused this policy and exposed innocent people ? Even they admitted they were wrong.
And yes, I support Sen Obama. He was WRONG for supporting this policy but I agree with him on far more issues then I do with Sen. McCain.

THANK YOU SENATOR BARACK OBAMA , SENATOR JOHN D ROCKEFELLER and SPEAKER NANCY PELOSI.

The government is safer now that they know I have to pick my son up at school at 3:30.

You might be asleep at the wheel..

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. We should take nothing for granted. Only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.

The real terrorists are in the White House and appointed government positions. They have subverted the Justice balance. Who is watching these guys? Certainly not you or me who are too busy trying to swiim harder and keep our heads above water..........which is exactly what they want us to be doing.

Funny...yet not so much when you think of how a former Prez warned us a little under 50 yrs ago of things to come...

One thing Michael: the Bush Administration approached the telecoms to begin spying on Americans BEFORE 9-11. This is well-documented in court transcripts on the Qwest case. I hope that Newsweek will correct this error. WHEN the Bush admn began spying on Americans (pre-9-11) is just as important as HOW they are doing it.

So we have officially entered the Intelligence Age? Yay! A brand new age deserves a new acronym: I WANT U (Intelligence Wire And Number Tracking - Unleashed). Can you hear them now?

If you think the government invades your privacy through the use of data mining, the private sector data mining use of personal information makes the government look like a bunch of school boys. Every time you use a credit card, or a grocery store card, buy a house ect. your personal information is swept up by companies that store that data for future use. The amount of information that these companies hold on average americans would boggle your mind. If you think that your right to privacy is guaranteed, you might want to think again. All you have to do is google your own name and you will be amazed at what you will find. The information collected is used for marketing research and to establish buying patterns and habits of consumers. From the information they collect, anyone with a computer can access your information and build a pretty accurate profile of who you are and what you do. The walls we built to protect our privacy no longer exsist. We live in glass houses now, and what we once considered secret is just a key stroke away from being used to open a window to your soul.

The people we most need to watch, our government, hides under a blanket of protection created by them, just for them. And yet, the American people, ignorant of their surroundings, blissfully carry on as if everything important in the world was going exactly according to plan...

"The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But, under the name of 'liberalism,' they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened."- Norman Thomas

"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. When the Americans finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then America ceased to be free." - Paraphrasing Edward Gibbon

People that have nothing to hide, hide nothing. Some people would be a lot more accepting of this legislation if they found out that a suspected terrorist was residing in their neighborhood or apartment complex. People were very surprised to learn that the 9/11 terrorist had in fact been their neighbors and were quick to comment that these people had indeed acted suspiciously for very long periods of time.
