in fact, this story is so inaccurate that i am utterly flabbergasted to see it in print.

i have lived in vietnam for six years and can assure you that this story is wildly inaccurate. it is true that many vietnamese know who mccain is, and that they forgive him and other americans for their actions during the war. but it is also true that many people idea have no idea who mccain is. and it is truer still that the vast majority of vietnamese, for obvious reasons, are fervently opposed to the iraq war. they would strongly oppose a mccain presidency based on his passionate support for the american intervention there. there is only one true american political hero in vietnam: bill clinton.

pinkpanther87413- you disgust me. I'm not normally a violent person but i wish i could slap you in the face. You say he just slipped through his time as a POW. What the hell do you know about what its like to be in that kind of situation. SLIDE THROUGH TORTURE??? You are truly pathetic.

My captors were more careful not to permanently injure or disfigure me than they were with the other prisoners," he writes. As the son of a U.S. admiral, he was considered too valuable a propaganda asset
From the article, and his own words, in his book!
I guess it's not what you know, it''s who you know, that kept him alive. not courage, not discontent, distaste for the enemy, it was daddy. This I'm just finding out, and it has left a nasty taste in my mouth, to thnik of all the dead, so he could slide through cause of daddy! No wounder he wants the files to stay sealed!

I'm an Asian American (but this is blatantly irrelevant), and just because he was a POW doesn't mean he should be president. Might as well let everyone who was a POW run for presidency.

    • Posted By: loriw @ 07/14/2008 12:36:49 AM

If they are a citizen of the US and at least 35yrs old they CAN run for POTUS, we don't have to "let them".

McCain meets the age requirement twice over.

I heard Cindy McCain is going to raise the price of beer when she is first lady. Kind of an OPEC but BeerPEC.

The one sad thing about Iraq that is different from our Viet Nam foolishness, is the great benefit that we got from the war brides who came back from Viet Nam with our soldiers, and the highly intelligent and competent refugees from there who "followed us home". They make all "A's" in school, work hard, make a lot of money and pay lots of taxes and the girls are just as pretty as you can find in the world. I have not heard of one solitary Iraqi war bride coming home with a one of our soldiers, though we have a few addle headed U.S. Senators, one of them being John Cornyn from Texas, who proudly repeat that if we leave Iraq, they will "follow us home". Maybe that's how we can get some new taxpayers and Iraqi brides. Just get the hell out of there and let them "follow us home". Works out better than you've been led to think.

Are you serious olderwiser? After reading your post I called my daughter who's husband is serving in the Green Zone and asked her what she knew about interactions between soldiers and Iraqi women. She will ask her husband for more specifics tomorrow (because he is asleep now), She said the soldiers are instructed not to interfer with their culture there. She said that men are not allowed to speak directly to a woman but instead MUST speak to her husband, father brother etc. An Iraqi woman who speaks directly to a man who is not her husband, father or brother would likely be KILLED. My daughter pointed out that unlike Vietnam there are no prostitues in Iraq who are soliciting the soldiers for sex/money. More later when we hear from my SIL on the subject.

Prostitutes are working in Iraq and mature mothers-in-law don't stir up trouble by asking questions. Hello! 'What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.' Get the soldiers home in one piece, that's it.

Not at 72 they wouldn't. I think most people recognize that peoples ability start to deteriorate with age, not to mention all that he went through in Nam. You can't get into the military after a certain age, Why do you think that is??????????

Loriw, I can''t make the Reply button work on some of these blogs. Referring to the information that you have received from Iraq from your son in law about the reason why there are no war brides, about seven posts below, that makes it easy to see why there is not enough chance for romance to even think about bringing a bride home from there. Being subject to the death penalty for even talking to a man who is not your husband raises another problem. How can a housewife find out where the kleenex is without getting slaughtered just for asking the grocer where to find the kleenex? Muslims don't drink alcohol, either, and I understand that there are no brothels, either. This helps explain why we never see an Iraqi smile on camera. It's a miserable place, devoid of entertainment, and obviously unfit for democracy. Centuries to go yet. Mc Cain's 100 years won't even dent a place like that. Thanks for the reply.

    • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 07/14/2008 5:18:26 PM

I saw a documentary showing Iraqi women who are forced into prostitution to support themselves and their children. Lives of misery but they aren't being executed. I think you're referring to Afghanistan and the Taliban code of conduct.

    • Posted By: loriw @ 07/14/2008 4:36:48 PM

here is some more of the info I promised...
This is the first war that the Army has made it a punishable offense for the soldiers to fraternize with the Iraqi's. My SIL says that they are required to spend their off hours on army base property and that the area is fenced off from the other areas. He said it is too dangerous anyway for them to go off property so they just don't. He said that talking to the women could and likely would get them killed. Personally I am glad that there are these restrictions. As the mother of the daughter who is married to him I would NOT be happy if I later found out he had an affair with an Iraqi or anyone else while he was away. BTW, he is very good about communicating with her daily, she is reassured of his devotion to her and that he is safe.

      likewise.

This article has no relevance in our presidential election. As noted, these folks are not registered voters. Of course they identify with McCain. He was a guest of theirs for over 5 years.

On another note, would any republican candidate not be associated with Bush. You don't attempt to evaluate McCain on his own merits. You go along and pick a non-republican candidate who probably doesn't even know where Vietnam is. Heck he probably doesn't know where S.Side Chicago. Hate Bush all you want but it wasn't McCain who failed the aftermath of this invasion or was part of this invasion plan. It was the civilains that are now gone who failed the Amercian people by not listening to the generals in our Armed Forces. At least McCain has gone to sand box and talked with our military members. That's why he was knowledgeable enough to concur with the surge because he knew what our military needs. When's Obama gonna do that? Only when the cameras are there and only after he was called out by McCain.

So stop wasting typespace and go do some research.

    • Posted By: loriw @ 07/14/2008 2:07:51 PM

"he was a guest of theirs for over 5 years" A GUEST? You make it sound like being a POW is like a vacation in a villa over seas. That comment disrespects any one that was a POW. How about you do the research and be a POW and see if you feel like a GUEST!

      • Posted By: elizabethpaige @ 07/14/2008 5:13:36 PM

Lucky he got out alive. Anyhow, he says he hates the 'gooks' and always will. Whatever he suffered in Vietnam, it doesn't qualify him to be president. And to this day Americans can't give a good reason for being in Vietnam.

  • Posted By: CauViet69 @ 07/14/2008 1:01:57 PM

his 5 years as pow gives him many reasons to vote for him. he knows suffering, he knows hunger, he knows how it feels to be at the mercy of the hands of the enemy, he knows torture and abuse, he knows what FREEDOM means and what it feels like to lose it, he has been in the Nam and knows War for what it really is not some liberal idiots rantings, many more examples I could say but the most important is that he has PROVED his rights as an American fighting man and desrves Our vote for that reason alone!

    • Posted By: loriw @ 07/14/2008 4:22:34 PM

Could someone explain to me how having your plane hit by a missle is the pilots fault. I've heard this comment over and over and I can't understand how that is McCain's fault.

    • Posted By: ebony @ 07/14/2008 2:42:40 PM

Him serving in the military is no reason to vote him in as President! There are plenty of people that have served! McCain will destroy America! He is behind time and totally out of touch with the Anerican people! He is not the same McCain! It is time for hime to retire!

    • Posted By: sparky716 @ 07/14/2008 2:13:06 PM

Enter Your Comment he was a pow because he FAILED his mission and was shot down...his 5 years as a pow has affected his thinking...Vietnam is over ...I was in the US Navy from 1963-67 guess I should run for president to...there were many air men that flew there missions and returned home with there planes ...the only thing he PROVED is he wasnt much at flying a plane...he's to old and he's the past ....its time for a change what were doing now is not working at home or overseas OBAMA 08

Me? I know I'm not fit to run a country, just cause i served, or deserving of anyones vote.

    • Posted By: pinkpanther87413 @ 07/14/2008 1:09:43 PM

A hero does not a president make! If he knows, as YOU SAY then why his FLIP-FLOP on the support for Iraq WAR??? no,no,no ok, ok,ok yes it's a good war, mmmmm, moron! I served, and don't believe I'm worthy of your vote, just cause i served, and was and still am forgotten!!! A NOBODY!

Wow some story! But who cares what they think? If Newsweek wants to do a story, what about the boat people who were tossed out of VietNam and perished at sea?
