you complete idiot, you don't even know what racism is and how can the oppressed be racist,t hey can have justified and unjustified prejudice, but any way you wouldn't know anything about that b/c as a white american, you don't ever have to think about things lke that. you just don't get why a man of pastor wright age would be be that resentful and I bet you never took the time to view the WHOLE video, b.c if you did you wold find out that it was not what it seemd, but wait you don't work off facts, you work of ignorance and that is why people like you voted for bush and that is why we are in this mess, we should blame voters like you!! DUMBASS, when you start working off facts then maybe your stupid opinions might, may be might be heard!!! NOT!!!

    • Posted By: Sweethome @ 07/13/2008 9:32:43 PM

Talk about the issues. You probably are not going to vote for him anyway. You just need an excuse not to vote for him. You look at his pastor and other things beside the issues. Let's get on with affordable health care, home foreclosures, job loss, and proper care of our veterans. You say he's a racist. What's interesting to me you only see his black skin color. Yet he is half white and half black. How can you call him a racist when he comes from both sides. He's experienced both sides. My question is what side are you looking from. Chech yourself .

I appreciate Senator Obama;s openness and honesty, and Newsweek sharing with readers. What concerns me is whether everything about Senator Obama that is not conventional will be revamped by Republicans as a negative difference that we should fear. I hope Newsweek solicits and prints equally personal stories from Senator McCain.

I AM DEFINITELY A HILARY CLINTON SUPPORTER. THAT SAID IF OBAMA IS TRULY WHAT THIS ARTICLE INDICATES. A TRUE AND LOVING CHRISTIAN, I APPLAUD HIM. IF HE SHOULD WIN THIS ELECTION THERE IS NOTHING MORE PRECIOUS THAN TO KNOW GOD IS LEADING HIM EVERY STEP OF THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Posted By: Christian_Patriot @ 07/13/2008 9:59:29 PM

Sarra Sow, he is definitely NOT a Christian, and he is most likely simply faking that he is one. The first tenet of Christianity, essential for anyone to ever become a born-again Christian, is that Christ is the ONLY way to God. Jesus Christ Himself said that. And Obama denies that, saying that there are many ways to God.

  • Posted By: Sweethome @ 07/13/2008 3:39:22 PM

Yeshuaz girl, Who are you to question anyone's acceptance on Jesus Christ. You look at the speck's in your eyes before you look at someone elses. You remind me of the Pharisee's in the Bible. You point to particular things like abortion. You are not perfect work on yourself. It's thing's you do in your life that are not of God. You cannot judge anyone only God can. Ye without sin cast the first stone. I'ts not good to question other people's faith. I pray you learn not to judge or you shall be judged.

Just like there is BudLite there are ChristianLite. Obama is one of them.

Rev 3:16 'So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.

    • Posted By: barba54785 @ 07/13/2008 5:38:27 PM

Amen! His votes speak for themself, as they are against Christians values such as abortion and gays. Then when he said that the middle class "hides behind their religion" That! was a "slap" on the face of every Christian in America. I have a foundation IN my religion, but I do not hide behind it. I proclaim it!!!!because I believe and have seen what Christ can do in many peoples lives. So Obama does not get it. He is still searching... and poltically, I believe he is only searching for the right words to "placate" the Christian Conservatives/Evangelicals of America. I personally believe that if he is not "scripturally sound" on a foundation of Christianity, he cannot do well in the office of the presidency. Bush, claimed his Christianity and has done some really good things(Aids to Africa, liberating Afghanistan, faith-based programs, spreading democracy and others. No, I don't agree with everything Bush did, but he is not the "monster" everyone makes him out be. History will show that.

Know why McCain wants to distance himself from former Senator Phil Gramm? It's not because of Gramm's obnoxious remarks calling Americans "a nation of whiners" who are in "a mental recession." Those remarks were so ascerbic that they may've been made just to give McCain an excuse to distance himself from Gramm. This issue is a lot deeper than it looks on the surface.

When Gramm was a Senator he was Chairman of the Banking Committee. He pushed through the legislation known as the "Enron Loophole." This loophole allowed US investment banks to bypass Federal regulations governing futures trading, and is the reason why investment banks were able to falsely inflate the prices of oil, wheat, corn and other commodities through massive futures trading, causing your costs of gas, heating oil and food to go through the roof.

Gramm also created the Gramm-Leach-Biley Act, which got rid of the laws that seperate banking, insurance and brokerage activities in America. The Gramm Act was touted as a new way to protect consumer privacy, but the real meat on the Act's bones was banking deregulation. Essentially, this Act did away with laws written after the Great Depression to protect us from another Wall Street/Banking Industry collapse. That's right, Gramm stripped the system of it's safe guards nine years ago, and guess what? The value of the dollar has nose-dived, four major economic institutions have failed, Wall Street is unstable, and we are in a worsening recession.

Notably, the US investment banks that gained the most from the Enron Loophole and from the Gramm Act contributed more than a million dollars to Gramm's campaign.

Currently Gramm is Vice Chairman of UBS, the Swiss Bank that came up with the idea of "death bonds." Worse, though, UBS is involved in a scam where they sold auction rate securities to American customers. Auction rate securities are supposed to be as safe as cash, but the way UBS did it, the fees garnished by their in-house investment bankers were intentionally higher than the return on the securities, ripping off their American customers. The Massachusetts Attorney General has already filed charges against UBS, and private brokers world-wide have dropped UBS stock. UBS is forecasted to lose 82.91% of it's value in 2008. We are talking about the corporate bank where Gramm is Vice Chairman. Looking at his track record there and at the havoc he has wrought on the US economy through the Senate Banking Committee, it's clear that either Gramm is a criminal or grossly incompetent.

Now McCain wants nothing to do with Gramm, wants us to forget Gramm has been a key player on McCain's team. Gramm was McCain's campaign CO-CHAIR and LEADING ECONOMIC ADVISOR. Previously, McCain had said that he planned to appoint Gramm as SECRETARY OF THE TREASURY.

With Gramm as McCain's leading economic advisor, now you know why economists and analysts say that McCain's economic policy plans are untenable.

Americans deserve to know the truth about oil and gasoline prices and where the fault lies.

Price of oil when Bush took office - $29

Price of oil when democrats took over Congress - $51

      Price of oil today, July 11, 2008 - $145

Price of gasoline when Bush took office - $1.60

Price of gasoline when Democrats took over Congress - $2.34

      Price of gasoline today, July 11, 2008 - $4.30

During the first 58 months of Bush's term in office, the price of a barrel of oil increased by $22 and a gallon of gasoline increased by $0.64! In the last 20 months of Bush's term in office, since the Democrats took control of Congress, the price of a barrel of oil increased by $94 and a gallon of gasoline increased by $1.96.

Now, who do you think is more responsible for gasoline prices being so high? Let me clue you in! Speculators are accused of being responsible for high oil prices. But, why would they be blamed? Their intelligence tells them that increased US oil drilling will never be allowed under a Democrat controlled Congress and our dependency on foreign crude will continue to rise. They are not stupid!!

Some ignorant Americans are going around saying that oil companies are not drilling on millions of acres that they have leased. That is a lie!! They are drilling dry hole after dry hole. There is not much oil there to be found. The oil companies know where the oil is and where it would be profitable to drill. Why are we telling them where to drill and where not to drill? Because our Congress contains a bunch of elite politicians that can afford high gas prices since the tax payers pay their expenses.

Congress needs to act on legislation immediately to open up offshore drilling and ANWR drilling. This Congress is killing the American people. Their approval rating is down to 9% and if anymore Democrats are elected, it could go to 0%. If the U.S. commits to using our own resources rather than depending on foreign countries, the price of oil would drop immediately! OPEC cannot afford to lose a big spender like the U.S.! The LOUD AND PROUD AMERICANS need to take action immediately and persuade Congress to get off their hands and accomplish something to help the American people now and in the future.

The Republicans passed an energy bill and Clinton vetoed it. Clinton said that it would take ten years to get the oil to the market. That was twelve years ago and look where we are today. Sound familiar?

Ignorant American people. A good candidate changes their position based on experience and present conditions and not on a whelm or for political expediency. Experience takes many weeks, months and years and must be thoroughly analyzed before you decide to change your mind on important issues. Changing your mind in just a few hours or a few days is called flip flopping and that is an appropriate name for it. We need a president that examines history and past practices very carefully before he changes his mind and changes policy for this country. We don't need someone that flows with the tide and looks at polls to make decisions. Yes, we need someone that listens to the people, but in some cases, based on information that can't be made public, the president must use his/her good judgement.

Obama is controlled and told what to say and where he stands on a particular issue by his election staff. These people determine what the public wants to hear or where the other candidate stands on an issue, and then tells Obama what to say to the voters. Obama reads directly from a teleprompter most of the time and says exactly what his staff has come up with. He sounds like a great politician, but in fact he is just a robot with a lot of shrewd politicians behind him who have created a new political figure. Don't get caught up in their rhetoric and make an important decision that you will REGRET for the rest of your life.

I'm sure both he and Newsweek would like me and everyone else to dumb down so much that we would
believe Obama's load of road apples! I will never believe that he went to Reverend Wright's church for 20 years and sat there asleep and didn't take part in what was going on. I'm sure he was clapping his hand and junmping up and down and yelling amen, right along with the rest of the racist in that crowd!

Can Mccain think or talk with this finesse? I doubt

    • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 07/13/2008 12:35:19 PM

Wouldn't that mean that Obama makes a better used car salesman than McCain?

  • Posted By: Jill from Florida @ 07/13/2008 12:33:41 PM

Since there is so many articles about Obama's faith, shouldn't there be the same number on McCain's faith? I thought that there was to be equal time alloted.

Oh wait, I forgot, that comes under the Federal Election Commission, and the Democratic leaders only voted on the 4 vacancies seats (out of 6) on June 24, 2008. They WERE hoping to have NO OVERSIGHT on this year's election, but somehow the public found out so they HAD to finally approve the nominees.
    How convenient.

The question we should be asking, this year in particular, is who will uphold the constitution of the United States?

  • Posted By: loriw @ 07/12/2008 7:32:56 PM

this is a very nice article on Obama's faith and unlike the other article up today on Obama's faith where other people are speaking about what Obama believes this article has Obama speaking for himself . Good job Miller and Wolffe. Please give us more interview articles like this one on both candidates, especially until we can get the 2 to debate. I'm much rather read an interview than read someone's opinion on what the candidates believe on any topic!
