    I wonder how to reflect this political campaign ad in the FEC reports.

    The Obama campaign just played the willing Newsweek crew into writing their response to the nagging questions of his faith. This is part of the idea campaign to shape how voters view Obama.

    I think the article should be valued at the market rate to get a 30 minutes of TV time on a cable channel.

    Nearly All Americans Consider Military Service PATRIOTIC

    Symbolic gestures valued more highly by older Americans and the less educated

    WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Nearly two-thirds of Americans (62%) say serving in the U.S. military reveals "a great deal" about one's patriotism, ranking it second only to voting in elections among six items rated in a recent USA Today/Gallup poll. More than half of Americans (53%) say the same about reciting the pledge of allegiance, and far fewer about wearing an American flag pin.

    Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama spent much of this Independence Day week trying to assure voters of his patriotism, having been faulted during the Democratic primary season for at times not wearing an American flag pin, and for not placing his hand over his heart during the national anthem on at least one occasion. Obama's speech on Monday, entitled "The America We Love," included praise for Republican rival John McCain's service to his country in Vietnam, in response to retired Gen. Wesley Clark's statement that McCain's experience as a Navy pilot and prisoner of war does not necessarily qualify him to be commander in chief.

    McCain's service in Vietnam is generally considered an advantage in this wartime election against Obama, who has never served in the military, and a key reason why:

    The Gallup data reveal that Americans do in fact consider military service in general to be a sign of patriotism. While Republicans are among the most likely of all groups to say serving in the military reveals a great deal about one's patriotism, more than half of both Democrats and independents agree. Republicans also tend to place more value on saying the pledge of allegiance and wearing an American flag pin, while independents align more closely with Democrats, who are generally less likely to place a high value on each action.

      Wow, you have completely drawn a line that does not exist. The poll questioned whether Americans think serving in the military is patriotic and important for a future leader--NOT whether they trust McCain to be a good leader. I'm sure the poll results would be much different if that specific question were to be asked. Of course serving in the military is a positive thing, but each candidate has a complex series of issues and stances that make up the overall person. You can not simplify it down to serving in the military and wearing patriotic pins. That is asinine.

    Hi Six -- I'd like to psychoanilize McCain. Had we done that with Bush we might not be in the mess we're in.

    I believe McCain - who left his disabled wife and 3 kids for a much younger, richer beer heiress - draws a direct correlation to something he might do to us. Perhaps McCain left his original values behind for those big corporate dollars - like Haliburbon, KBR, Blackwater, big oil and big telecoms - because they can get and keep him in office -- after all he's comfortable being a kept man.

      You ask a powerful question, and people are too scared to answer. Unfortunately, between the six of us who post we could not give an argument on what McCain did. Regardless, he did what he did, was not smart to do that among other issues which we don't want to delve into at this time.

      However, many people do the same thing as McCain with spouses, and we are not going to psychoanalize him, or anyone else as to why they may leave there spouses under those conditions he left his wife. The more important issues that the country has economy, gasoline, quagmire, healthcare, schooling, and the list keeps on going are more important then him and his affairs with a woman outside of marriage.

    Hi HD - would you be referring to non-substantial things like all of our tax dollars (McCain/Bush policies) going to Haliburton, KBR, Blackwater, Big Oil -- IRAQ) instead of our infrastructures at home - like bridges falling down, levees breaking and banks defaulting. How are McCain's buddies going to make money on educating the American public? So why should he care?

    I wonder are we hiring a president or a religion.Our forefathers put separation of church and state in the constitution for a reason and it worked for 200 years,now look at the mess we are in.They meant for the church to stay out of government business and the government to stay out of church business and it should remain that way!

      The first amendment does not say anything about seperation of church and state. It says that the government shall not establih a religion. The only document that states seperation of chuch and state is from the former communist constitution. The writers of the constitution used the moral laws fond in the Bible as guidelines in writing the laws of this country, and in private writings made statements that if there were any questions regarding the laws they pined they would refer back to the Bible to clarify the law in question.
      Regardless of who is running we need to look at the party they are in and how that party looks at the issues at hand. Do you want more government involvement in you life then be prepared to pay more out of your pocket to pay for it. Be careful what you ask for because might answer your request. Look at past history.

    Wow - what a beautiful article and beautiful man. I will apologise up front if I say something not true but believe I have read this somewhere or possibly been told by someone. After reading this article if someone asked me what this man's religion is I wouldn't know what to say. All of a sudden he is "biracial" (never once saw him not being "black" during primaries). Wait a minute...he got the black vote in the primaries....have to work on the white vote now. Note to self: when I become president and someone asks how does it feel to become the first "Black" (or whatever ethnic, appropriate present name should be used), remember to say, "Black?....I'm white". This article shows how intelligent this man is or should be. He belonged to a church that was "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian" for over 20 years and had a close relationship with Rev Wright (who is now?...a "flawed, human creature" ). Twenty years all black only - guess he never noticed. I know I have read numerous times that he was raised "Muslim" as a child - but now he was never "Muslim" (the American president is the number one target of the Muslim world - let's add denouncing that you were never one). How long will it be before his staff tells him what church he can join? They apparently told him it will be sometime after the election. "Ewwwwwwwwww...I love to dance a little side step...now you see me...now you don't...I'm here and gone" (Best Little Whorehouse In Texas). By the way....I'm black (I wanted to vote Democrat in the election - right now I won't be voting).

      Obama is not, was not and never will be Muslim (unless he wants Michelle to kick his butt to the moon). You are probably not black and going to a "black" elementary school did not turn my white skin one shade darker. The United States might be the target of Muslim extremists, but they could care less about the dishonorable Mr. Bush - except that he makes their dirty work easier.

        At least you made some constructive criticism compared to others. Do you know BO personally? Look at back articles on this man - I have seen more than one state he attended Muslim gradeschools. Think Non-Muslims attend those schools? BO was raised by the "white" side of his family in Hawaii and attended prominent schools there (think he got a good cultural view of Black America there?). Apparently he admits he didn't - he needed "father-figure" Rev Wright to get his black culture. I am 4th generation black on my father's side and 2 generations on the other.

          One should believe nothing that one hears and only half of what one sees. I DO see that Obama is comfortable enough in his own skin to marry a strong black woman and they have 2 daughters that mean the world to both of them. Malia and Sasha are well adjusted, well loved and well spoken at the tender ages of 10 and 6. Whatever kind of "black culture" or any other culture Obama picked up along the way is now benefitting his family and will benefit this country. He's black, he's white, he's Christian, he's a family man, he's a law professor, he was President of the Harvard Law Review, he knows something about grass roots organization - but the most important thing is that he is willing to ask questions and surround himself with diverse advisors. He listens, he learns and he never gives an answer like "so" to a serious inquiry. I'm not afraid of him...................why are you? Do you think Michelle and the girls will start wearing head coverings after the election (while Islam fanatics come out of the woodwork at the White House), or that he might lecture black Dads to step up to the plate or white people in WV "to get over their silly little racist selves?"

Maybe you could explain to me, how Christian it is for someone like McCain to leave his disabled wife and 3 kids for a young beer heiress, who he started an affair with the night he met her. Oh - and he's been a kept man ever since. Doesn't need to worry about money, like the rest of us. Neither does his friend Bush - his buddies will take care of him -- you know, (Hailiburton, the big oil companies and Blackwater) I've been weighing this in my mind.

      You know, if you're going to talk about someone and supposedly what they said, at least have enough sense about yourself to HEAR for yourself what was ACTUALLY said. Anyone who listens to Pastor Hagee for a rather short time knows that He would NEVER say such a thing about the holocaust. The fact is, Pastor Hagee has been a supporter of Israel since his first night to celebrate Israel which was held in San Antonio in the early 1980's. He has held these celebrations every year since then, and they are now held in every major city in the US.He is also the founder of the organization Christians United For Isarael (CUFI) which has met in DC the last couple of years and gone before congress to encourage our government to continue to be an ally with Israel. Pastor Hagee has also supported a Jewish orphange in Israel for many yrs and facilitated the transport of many Jews back to their home country, when they could not afford it. Now why would he say something so dispicable and yet do all these things in support of the Jewish people for years now?? Also, I have personally seen his sermons on the antichrist and the entire book of Revelations many times over the last several years and he has NEVER said the antichrist would be a gay Jew either!!! YOU ARE A TOTAL LIAR ( which anyone who researches it can see), and you ought to be sued for SLANDER!!!     And besides dumping his disabled wife and 3 kids for a young beer heiress...who's kept him ever since - he's seeking the economic advise from Phil Gramm - who's wife was on the board of Enron. Phil Gramm helped push some Enron policies through Congress - and Phil Gramm is linked to the mortgage crisis. And Phil Gramm just called us Americasn - who are losing our houses, jobs and pensions - a bunch of whiners.

    Tell me who's Christian?
