Um, can we talk about McCain for a minute? You know - and in case you didn't know - the guy who dumped his disabled wife and 3 kids for a young blonde beer heiress - after his wife waited five years for him to return from being a POW? So he starts up an affair with this younger, much - much richer girl, the night he meets her...and he's been a "kept man" ever since. Not very Christian of him.

  • Posted By: C. MacLean @ 07/13/2008 11:25:20 PM

I don't care what Obama's religion is, or McCain's, either.

All I want to know is what either of these men propose to do about health care, jobs, pensions, the war, and the price of a gallon of gas.

And frankly, I don't care if either of them makes a deal with the devil, as long as they come up with some workable solutions.

Comment: Wow - what a beautiful article and beautiful man. I will apologise up front if I say something not true but believe I have read this somewhere or possibly been told by someone. After reading this article if someone asked me what this man's religion is I wouldn't know what to say. All of a sudden he is "biracial" (never once saw him not being "black" during primaries). Wait a minute...he got the black vote in the primaries....have to work on the white vote now. Note to self: when I become president and someone asks how does it feel to become the first "Black" (or whatever ethnic, appropriate present name should be used), remember to say, "Black?....I'm white". This article shows how intelligent this man is or should be. He belonged to a church that was "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian" for over 20 years and had a close relationship with Rev Wright (who is now?...a "flawed, human creature" ). Twenty years all black only - guess he never noticed. I know I have read numerous times that he was raised "Muslim" as a child - but now he was never "Muslim" (the American president is the number one target of the Muslim world - let's add denouncing that you were never one). How long will it be before his staff tells him what church he can join? They apparently told him it will be sometime after the election. "Ewwwwwwwwww...I love to dance a little side step...now you see me...now you don't...I'm here and gone" (Best Little Whorehouse In Texas). By the way....I'm black (I wanted to vote Democrat in the election - right now I won't be voting).

Please keep that promise and don't vote, hw won't need your vote. He will win in a landslide. Question though, were you in that little whore house in Texas?

      • Posted By: darbyshaw @ 07/13/2008 10:01:43 PM

HW the third candidate and he is going to win by a landslide? Yes - went to the whorehouse and your mother said to say "Hi".

  • Posted By: Cheri76 @ 07/13/2008 8:55:40 PM

Is it not Christ who said: "He whois wirhout sin, cast the first stone." Christ was very heavily influenced by the Buddist where he grew up, who believe we are all one. God is love! He who dwels in love dwels in God, and God's in him.

It is not a Christian's job to tell another how they should believe. That was what we fought a Revolutionary war over.

Actually the revolutionary war was fought because we were tired of being overtaxed and exploited by the British.

  • Posted By: Odinbolt @ 07/13/2008 5:16:38 PM

It's so unfortunate that here in the 21st century, a person can't be elected president unless he can adequately prove to under-educated, unread, uncultured and untraveled middle-America that he personally communicates with a supernatural force from beyond the heavens. I am so terribly disappointed that the xenophobic, narcissistic cultural stagnation of the mundane controls the democratic process of my country.

    • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 5:23:25 PM

I wouldn't say that Obama can't appeal to the type of person you so ineloquently describe... He obviously appealed to you.

      • Posted By: Odinbolt @ 07/13/2008 5:43:44 PM

I disagree. I believe my description was quite eloquent. :)

        • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 5:54:22 PM

You disagree? So Obama doesn't even appeal to you? Why the ridiculous grammatically-incorrect diatribe then? Too much time on your hands?

Skywalker, you just accused him of doing the only thing that you have done so far. Odinbolt was very eloquent and precise. Pose a superior argument to his or bow out. You only improve his stance by being petty.

By the way Stone Cutter, who said you could be the self-appointed judge of eloquence? I have yet to see anything you have said that is even worth rebutting. At least Odinbolt appeared to be a challenge. Just as you would, when I turned up the heat on Odin he bolted.

  • Posted By: hunterd @ 07/13/2008 7:21:12 PM

I'm from Canada and I must admit some confusion about the U.S. media's concentration on your candidates' religious persuasions. You are after all electing the leader of (still) the most powerful nation on the earth, not a person for the pulpet, nor the Holy See nor the brightest mench to lead a rabbinical school. Does not the value of separating church and state still have resonance with the American people?

    • Posted By: mcf304 @ 07/13/2008 7:42:43 PM

Our country took a few wrong turns and it has ended up on the brink of being a Christian state. And what do I think? I'm Catholic, but nothing could possibly scare me more.

Canada, it seems, is actually more "American" than the US anymore. This country was built by great men, many of whom were atheists and agnostics, themselves. Somehow, along the road, accepting Jesus became a prerequisite for being a good leader. I wish that all people had your sense about this, but, alas, America is a circus.

      • Posted By: hunterd @ 07/13/2008 8:31:12 PM

I believe every country has taken at least a few wrong turns, most certainly including my own. I view the U.S. is a great country and an example in so many ways for the rest of the world. The election of Barack would be such a message of inclusion and hope for the rest of world..I hope it happens. On the religious issue...a totally separate issue..what should be a totally separate issue...I am deeply concerned about America's focus on it.

        • Posted By: habush @ 07/13/2008 9:13:13 PM

You should go and actually read the documents and letters and wriitngs of the founders of our great country the United States of America. These men were most certainly not atheists and agnostics...that is a distortion of history. William Penn once wisely quoted "we will be ruled by God or ruled by tyrants." It is not that our government should set up rule by God...but that the people would be given most free access to the Bible and Holy Scriptures to live by the commands therein by choice of will and not by law of government. But when the people do not live by God's words, then more and more government is required to control the anarchy and chaos that results when men choose to live by just simply whatever standards appease them at that time. When we took prayer and Bible reading away from the public square and squelched knowledge and access to these truths so that men could choose to live by them..we have begun to see the decay of our society and as a result government has stepped in and become more active in our individual choices. Separation of church and state is a myth...we cannot survive as a society without the church and God's word...which is life to all.

          • Posted By: hunterd @ 07/13/2008 9:25:53 PM

Your great country is a pride for the rest of the world. It's founding fathers gave a message of faith and inclusion. Ellis Island was a beakon of hope for the rest of the world. The Berlin Wall was a message of hopelessness and exclusion. You have a choice to make.

            • Posted By: habush @ 07/13/2008 9:37:05 PM

My friend..the new Berlin Wall that is being laid brick by brick in my own dear homeland is the loss of freedom to speak, to share, to read, to see my God or His words anywhere but in my own home or in my church. Mark my words...they are slowly laying the foundation to take the words of Jesus who is the light of world and close them off to our society...and when they do there will be great darkness...not only for the United States but the whole world. I however do not fear, because God's light always can shine brightest when it is very dark.....but I still pray that we would make the right choice..and not brick in God's people behind the wall...

              • Posted By: hunterd @ 07/13/2008 9:48:59 PM

All of our gods will have their day in the sun...as long as we strive to value each other, profect each other, value our families and ensure that we all have our say. Probably too simple, eh.

                • Posted By: hunterd @ 07/13/2008 9:53:03 PM

I guess I'm too simple when it comes to theology. I'm just about human respect and love. I leave it to the clergy to define the irregularities that separate us all.

                  • Posted By: habush @ 07/13/2008 10:23:38 PM

Well, I tried to reply to your post and hit a wrong key...I'm not very good with computers I'm afraid so if I repeat myself again with this reply forgive me. But no, your theology is not too simple, it's just incomplete. You are not far from God's heart really, you just lack the whole story. God teaches us that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, all our minds, and all our strength. This is the greatest commandment, and the second is like it...to love our neighbor as ourselves. By neighbor, Jesus goes on to define who a neighbor is to a questioner at the time. And he chose the story of the good Samaritan. To the Israelites, Samaritans were enemies. But this good man, stopped to help an Israelite, his enemy, when others passed him by. In God's eyes, we are to love even our enemies as ourselves. But we cannot do this to perfection, and this is what God requires....perfection....because He is holy. He wants to be reconciled to you and to me, as a loving Father to his child, but because He is holy and we cannot attain this holiness on our own....that is why He sent Jesus to die on the cross as payment for our lack of holiness. So now, if anyone believes in Jesus, and tells God that he sorry for all the ungodliness in his or her life, and asks Jesus to come into his heart by way of His Spirit and make him a new man or a new woman...he is faithful to do this and to each one who has faith in Jesus he grants forgiveness, reconciliation and a life to come with Him forever. When God sees me, he does not see my rebellion anymore..he sees Jesus His beloved Son because Jesus now lives in me, giving me understanding of His truth and helping me to be more like Him every day. It is only the power of Jesus and His word that can do this miracle...I hope sincerely that you will seek him and find Him.

I should have added that I'm not a Catholic, nor am I a Christian. But I am a product of the Jeudao-Christian ethic. That's why I don't steal, that's why I don't cheat, that's why I don't kill. That's also why I respect the values and beliefs of others and protect them to the extent I am able.

  • Posted By: mj it @ 07/13/2008 10:10:47 PM

Well I guess you didn't hear me...because why are we still talking about it? One more time.

McCain does not go to church. He left his disabled wife and 3 kids for a young beer heiress, whom he started an affair with the night he met her. He has been a "Kept Man" ever since. This is why he doesn't know anything about economics. This is why he confides in people like Phil Gramm (Enron/morgage crisis) who called Americans a bunch of whiners. McCain has never had to worry about losing his house, his job or his pension. He can always fall back on his wife's money - the woman he dumped his disabled wife and 3 kids for.

McCain cares about you and me, as much as Bush does. And if you think Bush cares about you and me -- vote for McCain. You deserve him -- but I don't.

Protectionism is the knee-jerk response of the lower classes. Except for native Americans, we're all descended from immigrants - some lineages have succeeded over the generations while others haven't. If you have ancestry that goes back several generations and you're STILL in an economic/ educational position to be threatened by non-English speaking Mexicans sneaking across the border then please - don't breed.

      • Posted By: hb1234 @ 07/13/2008 10:04:52 PM

The United States believes in a free education to all as long as not too many of you born here develop an IQ above 125 or our economy would not be in the state it is in now!!!!

      • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 6:26:51 PM

ALL men are immigrants when it comes to North and South America. The cradle of humanity has been proven genetically to be Africa. The race we call today, "Native Americans" migrated to the areas known today as North and South America from Africa before tectonic processes caused the continental drift process to split up what was one land mass into continents. By the way, the process is still going on today. Read your geography and stop talking about this non-sense of who is native to what continent and who is not.

        • Posted By: Odinbolt @ 07/13/2008 6:43:30 PM

Oddly enough, I agree with most of what you're saying except the timeframe of the breakup of Pangaea - which was millions of years ago. People crossed into the Americas 12-20,000 years ago when the drop in sea-level exposed the Bering land bridge. Beyond that, MY argument was localized the European colonization of America and how some people are threatened by new immigrants even though they've had a several generation headstart in this culture.

You seem more concerned with snappy vitriolic comebacks than keeping this thread on topic with logical discourse. If you choose, you may consider me beaten as I retire from this discussion. The migration patterns in the article found at the site below were traced through the study of mitochondrial DNA.

BTW, what we call today North and South America were the last two land masses that man migrated to.

How do you define "lower classes"? That sounds very elitist of you.

        • Posted By: Odinbolt @ 07/13/2008 6:29:28 PM

You're right and perhaps that's a bit harsh. Perhaps i should clarify my judgment to those 'in the lower economic classes that lack any forward momentum in a country with free high-school-level education and ample opportunities for college loans & grants.' To pull this back on topic, I'm impressed that Obama was intelligent enough to make it to Harvard from his common roots.

          • Posted By: mimc @ 07/13/2008 6:43:29 PM

Economic class doesn't define intellect. Neither does participation in a higher learning institute, even Harvard. We can all look at many politicians on both sides of the fence to see it takes more than that for intellectual value.

I am a Christian, that means be "LIKE CHRIST"
When I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior in 1970 I accepted Him, I believed what Gods word said'
I knew I was a sinner, I believed Jesus died on the cross for my sins and the sins of the world, and that He rose from the dead on the third day, and I believe that as Gods word says, He is coming back and every knee show bow before Him and acknowledge whom they have pierced'.
My life was changed, and my journey started with Jesus Christ, and still is going even stronger now in 2008.
If Obama was a Christian, I'd say he didn't have to look elsewhere, that he would know the truth and that truth set him free like it did me. All i know is this, the Bible says there are going to be many deceivers in this worldand antichrists, till the anti christ who will bring a one world religion, one world government comes about., WHICH is on the way I'd say. I am not judging but they say be wise, and from what I have heard Obama say on anything, hes one of the anti christs in this world, smooth, so conifdent, and changes his spots every time to fit the situation, so people will accept him. I will pray that its not too late for him to turn and really accept Jesus Christ and know that Jesus is the only "way, truth, and life'.

Newsweek (Allison Samuels, 5/4), quoted interviews with Obama's campaign advisors and Oprah Winfrey.

The crux of her story was that Obama's insiders claimed his membership with Wright's church was "due to a search for his identity as an African-American and, more importantly, as an African-American man."

According to the article, Reverend Wright and other male members of the church were instrumental in helping him understand the black experience in America.

However, whereas, Oprah left Wright's church after a couple of years, Obama continued with this man for twenty tears, because Oprah claims that Obama saw Wright as his," father figure." Now put this into perspective, Obama was searching for his identity twenty years ago; He was looking for a "father figure in Pastor Jeremiah Wright!

Actions speak louder than words. Obama claimed that Hillary Clinton supporters were uneducated, low-class whites, clutching guns and going to church.

    • Posted By: dking312 @ 07/13/2008 9:19:37 PM

WAit wait wait....I thought people liked clinging to guns cause of the 2nd Amendment, and they like going to church......WTF? What's the problem? Also, he did not say Hillary supporters specifically stupid.

Mccain top economic advisor thinks you and I are stupid and this no money thing is something fake we are "just whining" about. What am I clinging to there buddy?

I find it hard to believe that Obama IS a Christian. I have not heard him discuss:
Anger that the Founding Fathers Beliefs have been written out by the Contemporaty Courts, and that Prayer was removed WITHOUT ANY PRESCIDENT>

He has not called anyone to repentance for the Acts of Murder we as a Nation have allowed (Abortion).

He has not discussed the increase by over 550% Sexually Transmitted Diseases since Prayer was removed.

He has not discussed the divorce rate increasing by over 300% since 1963....

He has not mentioned that our SAT Scores have dropped and have never come up for Public Schools by over 80% since 1963

That preganancies under sixteen (specifically 10-14 year olds) rose by over 500%......

And the list goes on. Why have neither Candidates called the Nation to Repentance? Why has th ACLU continued to encourage the Made Up Doctrine of Seperation of Church and State?

No Obama is not a true Christian or he would be angry and motivated to call us to repent and clean up the mess we are in. Audacity of Hope? Not in the Humanist Manifesto or Secular Humanism......The Doctrines of the Democratic Party. Look em up,and read 'em and weep........

Nobody will be giving to any churches soon if we're killed by middle easterners cause we hate to talk, or if we're all third world broke cause our economy has blown away like Arab sand.

At least Obama let's you know he is with the faithful. Mccain doesn't seem to talk about things that make him uneasy. Or the repubs haven't told him what to say yet.

Sounds like you want a preacher/President to preach to you and the rest of America. The rest of us would rather leave religion out of politics. What you are proposing is almost as fanatical and extremist as some Muslim countries.
Would Jesus try to preach to the world/US the same way you want Obama to? Jesus wouldn't preach negative trash like you want, He would probably continue the message of love and peace if he were here today. You seem to believe in hate and controlling others.

It's not Obama's job to point out those "facts" you mention.

The comments that say 70% of the American people believe that all religons lead to eternal life is some what true in the sense that you will spend eternity in either heaven or hell. To spend everlasting life is to believe on God's Son Jesus Christ, to spend eternity away from God is to not believe on His Son. I have chosen the former and hope and pray that Obama has as well. We as Christians should not judge what the choices are of other, but should pray that the Spirit will do the work. If Obama says he is a Christian just for polical gain or votes, then let the Lord judge and convict his heart if his motives selfish. God will put who He wants in leadership to do of His good pleasure. God Bless America!!

Our forefathers wanted us to have a foundation for this country steeped in religious and intellectual freedom. They were accosted and abused in england for their particular brand of Christianity and wanted no such bias and abuse in their own new country. Reason, logic, and the fair balance and application of law should guide the hands of our leaders. Hope and faith of ones own self worth and spiritual value are inherent in the minds of all intellegent people, our political leaders included. The specifics of each ones particular brand of religion should really have little if any affect on policy and public opinion concerning how they are going to do their job. The Magna Carta was an excellent early law charter which influenced our governments legal and political foundation along with certain precepts of biblical law, not because they intended to lock this country into Christianity, but because in just about every religous text there are admonitions and advisements which have humanity's best interest in mind and appeal to the human need for fairness and order. If Obama has a broad and varied experience with religion, it just means that he has the ability to understand where more people are coming from in an experiential way. It's about time we started acting like the post reniassance society that we are and stop harping on hellenistic and stagnant roads of inquiry. Will Obama respect everyone's belief and react swiftly against any person or group which tries to use or twist it's belief for hate, murder and oppression? Of course! Will he encourage a dialog between different groups for understanding, peace and trade? Of Course! Will he reflect each one of your beliefs and choose sides and preach from a presidential pulpit? He had better not!! We don't need a precher in the White House and everyone knows that! Why should Obama's style of religon even matter to any of you unless your just hoping for some kind of grand self validation by seeing your same religious values and stances mirrored back at you? Are you seriously worried that a president who doesnt relfect your same views will trample all over them? I'm allergic to coco but I have yet to pitch the candy bar vending machine out of the window at my office. I think the color pink is disgusting but you wont catch me burning a pile of pink garments in protest just because I dont like them. President Bush claimed to be a born again Christian and that did not keep him from lying to the entire country several times. You should all be relieved that Obama is not using his religious stance as a platform in this race. The last president who did that was just using you all because he knew that you would follow who ever pretended to be just like you.

And another thing SC, which of the teachings of Jesus can gwb or any of his supporters point to that legitimizes in any way this horrible war in Iraq ? We allowed him and the other neoconmen to do this in our names, and it looks like we are all going to pay dearly, and continue to pay until the whole debt is cleared.

It does sadden me that over half of the voters in our country swallowed the lies of the Bush administration twice. I was not in agreement with them. My voting at primaries and speaking at the caucus, sighning petitions and lobbying for full disclosure met with an iron wall of fear and misplaced rage. I will continue to work and vote for what I know is right and you should continue as well. We are all in this country together and it is true that even those of us who struggled against the tide of blood find our garments stained. Hopefully we will be able to prevent anything like this from ever happening again.

Message to the Press: BARAK OBAMA RELIGION IS NON OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS! AS A RESULT, THERE NEEDS TO BE RESTRICTIONS PLACED ON FREEDOM OF THE PRESS; YOU FOLKS ARE ABUSING YOUR CONTITUTIONAL PRIVILIDGES! WERE I PRESIDENT, I DEFINATLY WOULD RESTRICT YOUR PRESS FREEDOMS!

When someone is running for the office of President, of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA, EVERYTHING is our business! Even the stuff we dont want to hear. I think everyone has grown tired of the media. Look at our gas prices, all because of media speculators. and on the topic of freedom of speech, you would never be able to do anything about it ever. Heck, we can not even get rid of ILLEGAL ALIENS out of the country, and you want to silence people because you dont want to hear someone elses truth?

I have a question for everyone. When you have the support of 35% of Whites, 65% of Hispanics, 92% of Blacks and 80% o foreign born citizens, what happens in the election?

ANSWER: You win by a landslide. Mark my words, McCain will lose his home state.

Under Islamic law, when the father is Muslim, children must be Muslims and this cannot be changed. To deny such statement, the Sharia's law cease to be important. Women cannot marry non believer husbands and that guaratees ta their children will be Muslims.
Politicians might offer more than one way to heaven but there is only one and that is Jesus.
True Christianity is based on Jesus teaching. Nowadays, people tend to think that Jesus condone homosexual marriage, abortions, pornification of AMerica, lies, corruption and so much more.
