Finding His Faith

Passing judgement on anyone's relegious beliefs is a risky position at best. We are judged by a measureable set of morals, values and ethics, but the search never ends because of our natural curiousity. It is a certainty no-one will find all the answers, but I truly feel there is god in all relegions. When you look at each sect within a faith, it seems to take on countless interpretations. I have a strong belief in God and creation, but stopped going to churches since they are saturated with politics. Especially guilty are the Christian Co-olition and the Evangelical movement. Pastors and preachers are politians and usually shoving republican politics down our throats. John Hagee is the perfect case in point. This man must be the devil in disguise. I doubt he knows any greek, latin or hebrew which is almost a must to speak with half an ounce of intelligence. I would never question anyone for their relegious beliefs and neither will I be questioned of mine. Everyone's relationship with God (if you believe) is extremely "up close and very personal". It should stay that way and by all means be kept out of politics.

Very interesting. I would like to understand how Mr. Obama would explain his stalwart support of abortion on demand to his Savior, Jesus Christ. How on earth does he reconcile the cruelty of Mothers killing their children in their womb with the example and life of Christ. To be "Christian" is to be Christ-like and nothing in Chris'ts life leads us to believe he would embrace abortion. Christ personified self-sacrifice. Christ is indeed forgiving, but, why would Christians advocate an act that would require Christ's forgiveness. We are commanded by God not to kill, I simply cannot reconcile the "progressive" support of abortion with Christianity. Help me to understand.

Merton, NOBODY is "christlike"! Christ said to sell all your earthly possessions and give to the poor. DO YOU DO THIS? Would you advocate that ALL people should do this? Also, your Bible says "Thou shalt have no other gods before me". That is in direct violation of The CONSTITUTION guarantee of freedom of religion (other non-christian American citizens right to their own religion/gods). There are millions up on millions who do NOT believe in a whole slew of christian teachings. Are EVERYONE supposed to be FORCED to follow those beliefs/teachings of the CHRISTIAN Bible and religion??? There is a very very good reason why there is a SEPERATION of Church and State.

Your mix of half truths is very amusing.... Just like the Deciever himself. You will need to go back to the Congressional Record and read what the Founding Fathers wrote, debated and believed.
A great Recource is Wall Builders, on the net. The rewriting or our History will not change the fact that God is a personality, and wants reestablishment of relationship. But you need to follow the rules of the game. Since you have not read the rules (the Bible) and rely on hearsey, your not going the right way to understand the Relationship that God Wants. How about it? Are you ready to be challenged or are you for the same old same old? I suggest you re-read the Book of John.

I did not read in IgnoranceDestroy's post that he wanted to be converted to your particular type of religion or that he was challenging your interpretation of it's book. A discussion about religion in politics is not synonymous with playing a who's the bigger christian game. I am curious as to why someone feels that religion should play such a large role in government. Take the following as an example of my meaning. The war of the Crusades, like the Inquisition, was a death throw of the dark ages, one of the many past blemishes on our collective history. The trade and scientific enrichment that resulted from a peace within that region continues to spur us on to further heights of knowledge. Imagine the new age of reason that could bloom within this country if we were able to take the secular religious fears out of political debate and policy. Why should superstitions hold back international progress and national improvement?

Richard, how can you say it's a "fact "that Sen. Obama isn't talking about issues or coming up with any plans? Of course he is. Everything from economic summits to energy panels, to leading education seminars, to foreign policy Q & A sessions. Don't you keep up with the news? Please do your homework before criticizing.

    • Posted By: Richard1327 @ 07/13/2008 7:10:15 PM

Are you talking about the plans he took from Hillary or the flip-flops from his plans during the primary? Research all you want, his plans will be different tomorrow anyway.

Wow! Wolffe & Oberman, two extreem Leftys interviewing an extreem Leftist. More likley "The Chosen One" scripted this whole article. I'm sure this article will reasure and convince those already convinced that "He" is the path to enlightenment. And, that if "He" is elected, "We'll all be drinking that free bubble up and eating that rainbow stew".

I love that fact that Obama represents all of this country, in all of our unique diversity and various influences. We must embrace our differences, as well as our similarities. Finally, a leader who gets it.

Sounds like a pretty good religious background to me. Don't get tied to a denominational post. I'm RC, but I think for myself.

    • Posted By: Richard1327 @ 07/13/2008 7:00:07 PM

Being an RC and thinking for yourself is an oxymoron. If you are an RC, you have to follow their teachings. It's not a cafeteria plan where you get to pick and choose - that's called Protestant.

I really like how the writer casts' obama in a similar light as to jesus christ. "his early days in the wilderness" Now we are to believe he is jesus? It would be nice to find a writer who doesn't worship the man to write unbiasly about him.

Glad to see this publication supports him no matter what facts might be, since no one will research, just take what he says as gospel.

Good observation about Newsweek's Messianic narrative. Unfortunately, Obama is to Christ as Malcolm X is to St. John the Baptist.

    • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 5:17:17 PM

What did you expect? You have to take everything the lamestream liberal media says with a grain of salt. Newsweek is a liberal, big business tool.

Newsweek, along MSNBC, NBC, NYT and most liberal media cannot be trusted to report anything accurate when it comes to this Obamanation. They want a socialist in the WH and by damn they are going to get it if they have anything to do with it

Obama, in his own words, called himself a non-traditional, non-evangelical Christian. Given the Great Commission in all four Gospel's I'd truly like for someone to explain to me what that means.

  • Posted By: Richard1327 @ 07/13/2008 6:54:22 PM

Five articles now in Newsweek on Obama's faith. 1. Newsweek feels the need to make sure the country knows Obama is a Christian. 2. Who cares as long as Obama remembers to separate church from state. 3. Are we electing a pope? 4. Anyone sick of all these photo ops of Obama with bowed head looking pensive and pious yet? 5. All of this religion talk is a distraction from the fact that Obama is not talking about the issues or coming up with any plans.

What bible did he use to take his oath of office. I heard it was not the Christian bible but the Muslim???s Koran. Is this true?

    Hunley

    • Posted By: Boulder Sue @ 07/13/2008 6:46:49 PM

Hunley, Barack used the Bible. You may be thinking of Keith Ellison, the first Muslim to be elected to Congress. He used a Koran. By the way, I've seen him speak numerous times on C-SPAN and he does not have a sword in his hand waiting to chop off the heads or hands of "infidels". Actually, to look at him or listen to him speak, you'd think he was just another young member of our American Congres and a real citizen with no secret Muslim agenda, which he is, of course.

    • Posted By: O Man @ 07/13/2008 6:20:03 PM

He used a Bible. It was another congressman that used a Koran.

Who are we to say what is the right religion, The Christian Bible was written by MEN not a God. The Declaration of Independance was written by mostly FreeMasons not Christians. Do some research people. What is wrong with ALL religions is noone is tolerant of others beliefs. I am a Pagan, that means I believe in a God/dess aspect you cannot have one without the other it is impossible. Their are a female and male counter part in every thing on this earth and the universe. Who are we to say who is right or wrong in the way others pray or worship, we are not the God/dess. It is up to All of us to be tolerant of each other. Love your neighbor as you love yourself is in the Christian Bible however I don't see many Christians or others being tolerant.

    • Posted By: dhunley @ 07/13/2008 6:12:11 PM

The Karan bible says to kill the infidels, the Christian bible is based on Love of Humanity.

      • Posted By: IgnoranceDestroys @ 07/13/2008 6:46:28 PM

Yes, the Koran says to kill the infidel. But the Bible also has God commanding to STONE to death the unbelievers (infidels); to STONE disobedient children; to kill whole tribes of people (except for the virgins), kill every firstborn child in Egypt, drown everyone except Noah and family in a flood; and many many other genocidal, maniacal atrocities. Yeah, I know; most christians are the cherry picking hypocrites who do not want to know or want to IGNORE scriptures that which they don't like, but ooooohhhh yes, they cling to the "homosexuality an abomination" part!

      • Posted By: Boulder Sue @ 07/13/2008 6:33:40 PM

Except for some pretty good chunks of the Old Testament. I like the Jesus part best, not a god who "smites" everyone in sight who is not an Iraelite, and sometimes even a lot of them. The Bible was written by men trying very hard to interpret the world they saw around them and a god who was unknowable. I think they got closest to the truth when the Gospels were written about a man named Jesus who tended to bring out the best in people if you followed his teachings. I don't presume to know God though I believe there is one. Have you ever had one of those moments when you could just feel it, totally irrationally? Putting it into words is hopeless. Living it is the best we can do to express it. I believe Barack has had those moments and is doing his best to "Be the Change" as Ghandi said. Doing that in this world is damned difficult, but I praise the ones who try.

    • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 6:15:07 PM

Maybe you meant the Constitution? Your references don't pertain to the Declaration of Independence. By the way, have you ever heard of the Bill of Rights, either? Do you think the Magna Carta was written by our fore fathers?

Wow - what a beautiful article and beautiful man. I will apologise up front if I say something not true but believe I have read this somewhere or possibly been told by someone. After reading this article if someone asked me what this man's religion is I wouldn't know what to say. All of a sudden he is "biracial" (never once saw him not being "black" during primaries). Wait a minute...he got the black vote in the primaries....have to work on the white vote now. Note to self: when I become president and someone asks how does it feel to become the first "Black" (or whatever ethnic, appropriate present name should be used), remember to say, "Black?....I'm white". This article shows how intelligent this man is or should be. He belonged to a church that was "Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian" for over 20 years and had a close relationship with Rev Wright (who is now?...a "flawed, human creature" ). Twenty years all black only - guess he never noticed. I know I have read numerous times that he was raised "Muslim" as a child - but now he was never "Muslim" (the American president is the number one target of the Muslim world - let's add denouncing that you were never one). How long will it be before his staff tells him what church he can join? They apparently told him it will be sometime after the election. "Ewwwwwwwwww...I love to dance a little side step...now you see me...now you don't...I'm here and gone" (Best Little Whorehouse In Texas). By the way....I'm black.

I guess the "real Christians" would have more respect for Obama if he decided to be born again and blindly accept a faith (like W) in an effort to cancel out past DUI's and drug abuse. Apparently its more admirable to use a religion as a means for covering up your shady past than to actually care enough to examine different points of view and decide what they mean to you personally.

    • Posted By: GrimFang4 @ 07/13/2008 5:40:26 PM

Yes, someone gets it! Cover up your past, yes. Decide that your personal experience is the true and perfect path? That's pluralism and Obama's trademark, apparently.

      • Posted By: 4Him @ 07/13/2008 5:49:56 PM

being a Christian, having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is not forgetting your past sins, its called being forgiven and having a new life, a new beginning that does not include your past. I feel sorry for you and your anger.

        • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 6:42:51 PM

Trust me, you will feel a lot more sorry if Barack Obama makes it into the presidency.

        • Posted By: napili79 @ 07/13/2008 6:29:34 PM

Save your pity, I feel sorry for you if you actually believe that the so called Christians/religious right in the U.S. government care anything about the citizens of this country. Unless of course you make more than $500,000 a year?

          • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 6:41:37 PM

There is no presence of the religious right in the Republican U.S. Government. They are all mimics designed to get the religious right vote and nothing more. The same thing the Liberals(Democrats) do to get the lower class vote. It is all a sham.

        • Posted By: skywalker77 @ 07/13/2008 5:56:58 PM

I feel sorry for you and your lack of acumen...

      • Posted By: napili79 @ 07/13/2008 6:01:49 PM

Too bad you don't get it, I think religious pluralism is a good thing, obviously you don't. The world in general would be a lot better off if people weren't so quick to judge others by their differences. The left and the right in this country do a great job of making the masses believe that we are so different due to race, religion, gender, etc. Keeps us divided and distracted while a select few get richer and the majority gets screwed.

  • Posted By: nbond @ 07/13/2008 6:27:04 PM

The comments in many cases are stunning for this article...if you do some research on the candidates, you find that it is factual that Obama is not a Muslim, and has been baptized a christian. So, do those sharing scathing comments, crying "lie" consider themselves as christians? Wow...they need to take a look inward at their need to "categorize" others, particularly those different from themselves. Scary to think people in this country are so narrow thinking, as if they never evolved...again-wow....its sad.

    • Posted By: mimc @ 07/13/2008 6:34:50 PM

Categorizing others and calling people narrow thinking- I think that's being hyprocritical about being hyprocritical.
