I do not care one iota what someone's PERSONAL religious beliefs are. I care about HONESTY. I want someone who will uphold the LAWS of our Constitution. Someone who can lead and inspire and bring together people of ALL.......ALL different beliefs and denominations. NOT ONE SINGLE RELIGION should ever, ever be the complete be all to end all when it comes to LAWS in America.

        Please remain truthfull in your assertations. The addition of 'under God' was made to our pledge of allegiance in the 50's. It was not always in our pledge or constitution. We as a nation have undergone many changes already including the waxing and waning of popular religion as our focus for policy. That which does not adapt, grow or change, will stagnate, atrophy, and eventually go extinct. This is a fact of life and existence. It is time for our country to evolve. Let go of this false idea of a set and eternal need for a christian government. That is something that has never existed and never will.

          Yeah, and look at the condition our country is in now because of all of this wonderful EVOLUTION we thought we needed!! The crime rate, the drug epidemic, the deterioration of our educational system, the corruption in so many institutions...yeah, we've come SOOO far in our NEW liberal thinking!!!

            Those afore mentioned ailments are symptoms of an illness inherent in the insane approach of following the same old worn methods. Our policies toward youth and crime have not changed into anything new in decades. We have been using rehashed old regan era policy even though it failed in his own time. One of the definitions of insanity is to keep trying the same thing while expecting a different result every time. If we actually tried something new does'nt it stand to reason that something new would be likely to happen? Of course it does.

        Going from Barry to Barack was not about religion, Barry was his family nickname, but Barack was his given name at birth, it's his father's name. Again, you're trying to turn everything about him into something sinister and "scary", it's ridiculous.

          Barry was the name he went by when he was younger. The only thing scary about Barack Obama to me is his potential impact on the economy due to his lack of acumen.

      If you would take the time to go back and read the ORIGINAL Declaration of Independence and Constitution, dear, you would find that are country was founded on Christian beliefs and ethics which our forefathers told us not to stray from. We have always been ONE NATION UNDER GOD, and if this makes you uncomfortable, then you can find many countires that were NOT founded on these premises. TRUE Christians love all people, even their enemies, and they do not FORCE their religion on anyone as this is not God's way...but Christians are also not gonna keep their mouths shut on their views just because it makes some people uncomfortable. FREE SPEECH applies to ALL, honey, not JUST the gays, abortionists, and atheists!!!

Barrck Obama selected the most extreme, bigotted, unchristian church that her could find to practice Black Liberation Theology with his good friend Reverend Wright for the last 20 years! That is a fact. Obama needed to find a good LUNATIC pastor to mentor his spiritual needs.

      You know nothing about Black Liberation Theology other than what REAL bigots like Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly want you to believe about it. Try reading a book rather than watching so much television, try getting your information from more places than just right-wing media, you may find that your hate is quite misguided and unwarranted.

          Please brush up on your American history and consider the time in which Cone's books were written. You're talking about a racial climate that was much more contentious then we have now, thankfully. Before you pass judgment as you seem so eager to do, consider the circumstances Black Americans faced during this time: Government-regulated segregation (Jim Crow), "separate but equal" facilities, lynchings.

      Are you people aware that there was a time in this country when by law, Black people were considered to be 3/5 of a human being, not a full human being, but only partly human. This theology is not one of hate, but of uplifting people who have historically been made to feel inferior, that they aren't good enough or they are unworthy of certain opportunities or they're incapable of achieving certain things because they are Black.

        Yes, I've studied American history in college...what is your point? The key words are "history" not "current events." Women were also viewed as property, had no voting rights and were considered second class citizens. As a woman, I say that is "history" and get over it.

      Dude, you got a real problem!

      FACT #1: The Constitution along with most laws of western civilization originated from the Judeo-Christian faith.

      FACT #2: A lot of practices and services you probably take for granted in western civilization originated from the Judeo-Christian faith - - - - such as ???hospital care???.

      You will be hard pressed to find a culture on this planet where religious principles are not apart of the core foundations and overall fabric of a nation.

    You can either choose to be duped by all the discourse intended to obfuscate the true character of Obama's religion, OR make an objective appraisal based on your own intelligence of the historical facts which are irrefutable. Obama is neither Christian nor Muslim. Unless he has had one of his very frequent epiphanies in the last week or two, he is a disciple and practitioner of Black Liberation Theology whose tenants have been amply articulated by Jeremiah Wright and James Cone. For 20yrs. Obama, under the tutorial of the fanatical Reverend Wright, immersed himself and his family in Black Liberation Theology, a Marxist derivative which rejects Christianity; and, which professes that the White race is equivalent to the Devil. It's amazing that anyone would be shocked at Obama's perverted view of the Bible. Rev. Wright's mentor, Black Liberation theologian, James Cone, in his book "For My People" states: "The Christian faith does not possess in its nature the means for analyzing the structure of capitalism. Marxism, as a tool of social analysis, can disclose the gap between appearance and reality, and thereby help Christians to see how things really are." It is this logic, reinforced by his mother who was an avowed Marxist, which has schooled Obama to seek economic parity in America thru income redistribution; i.e. Marxist Socialism; and, is an overriding theme of his campaign. Further, noone should be surprised at Obama's proclamation that American is NOT a Christian Nation. Although the Obama campaign has painstakingly attempted to lay a smokescreen to confuse the past religious associations of their candidate, hopefully a Christian America will send Obama an unmistakable message in November. It's what you get with an un-vetted candidate whose only skill is reciting a text from a teleprompter while even Jesse Jackson admits Obama arrogantly looks down his nose and "talks down to the audience." A characteristic which was front and center in Obama's comments about bitter folks in Small Town America who "Cling to their religion." Greg Neubeck

    To me, a born again, evangelical, bisexual Christian, musician, and regular More Light Presbyterian Church member, Obama's Faith Journey sounds totally authentic. He has found Christ. How could anyone deny this, other than bigoted, close-minded & small-minded non-thinkers, non-compassionate Little Men. Christ said, "I am The Way, The Truth, and The Life." Humans search. Some look to, and find, The Light, and some find the truth of "Judge not, that you be not judged." I am proud to be a Fellow Christian with Barack Obama.

    Than you for writing this very insightful article about Barack Obama. His views on chritianity mirror my own; Dr. Dobson needs to get a grip on the fact that a huge number of Americans have been severed from their childhood churches, some never to return. Dobson's reaction confirms what is likely true about organized faith: it is not as open as they think it is. After reading this, I am more certain than ever that Sen. Obama will have my vote in November. (and shame on those who spread what is not true about his religion...)

    One-half of Barak Hussein Obama's family is Moslem and today lives in Africa. These are not his ancient ancesters, but his uncles, aunts, and cousins. A guy with these kind of overseas relatives would be very unlikely to be granted a security clearance of any kind, much less a high security clearance. The Dems are about to nominate the only high profile person in their party who couldn't get a security clearance. This guy is a security risk - not a president.

      One-half of his family lives in Africa today, so part of your statement is true. However, their religion is unlikely to be Moslem, since only one member, Obama's grandfather, converted, and that was while he lived on Zanzibar, not in Africa. His son, Obama's father, converted back and was not a Muslim. He thought it a backward faith that would not move Kenya forward into the modern age. No one considers Obama a security risk.

        I consider him a security risk and I think that is a view shared by the majority of Americans. I lived in Africa for 3 years, including 1 year in Kenya, and I can promise you that all of East Africa, including most of Kenya, is heavily Muslim. If I'm not mistaken, Obama's brother is a Muslim living in the USA.

        Speak for yourself when you say "No one considers Obama a security risk." I am terrified that he "might" become President. Then we think 9/11 was bad, watch out! Study up on what is taught in the Muslim faith and what they teach about non-muslim believers. He might try to say he does not believe the Islamic faith, but most of us fall back to our up-bringing when times are rough. Forget the race issue! The fact that he was "taught Muslim faith" for many years is enough to scare me. I think the public is so set against a Republican, due to the screw up of policies under George Bush, that they will vote for anyone just to get rid of a Republican in the White House. Stop and think America! The President can only do what the Senate and House allow him to do in the final countdown. Who is ruling those houses?

    I'd say this is just Newsweek's attempt to help reformulate Obama's profile. While it sounds wonderful, I don't believe a word of it. He attended Wright's hate-based church for nearly 20 years and apparently never had a problem with it until word got out to potential voters. Give me a break!!!!

    Obama is a Christian? Wow, do I really care? I worry more about his inexperience in the Senate and his COMPLETE LACK of any type of voting record. The "no vote" that I kept on seeing in the Senate next to his name make me hesitate, he's been too busy campaigning for president to do the job he was ACTUALLY elected to do, be a voice for the people of Illinois.

    People confuse voting for President with voting for the Pope. We need a President to balance this economy, keep good paying jobs in The U.S. , make fuel and health care affordable, and stop this run away inflation . If you are looking at any Politician for spirituality, you already are off course. All a politicaian has to do is protect our right to worship as we choose , once you go past that , well you end up with an idiot like George Bush for eight years.

      Amen............the most intelligent response's that I've read. Religion should play no part in this election. People should be more interested in how we can get out of this mess that Bush and his buddies have put us in and less about someone's beliefs in God. The world is made up of many, many religions and everyone is entitled to his/her feelings and beliefs. Who gives any of you the right to judge how anyone should believe. Keep to the main issue........who will best help this country get back to the country it once was and give you and your children a better country to live in. Don't know about you but I think most people should be very concerned about their future.

    I am sure, those people in Chicago who got to know Barack as a community organizer would have a lot to say about the fruit he produced. Some of you need to understand, Jesus never condemned any organized relgion-He condemned the self righteous perfectionists, like many of you who believe its my way or the highway. How many of you who have responded to this article have put in the time it takes to study and make contrasts or comparisons with other religions? How many of you have walked in his shoes? Since you believe you have a heaven or a hell to put him in who died and made you God? After all, you are judging him to be a hypocrite and not someone who is sincere. That means you know him personally. Right? A lot of you just need to take a chill pill. The measuring rod you use for him just might be used against you.

    If you go back into the old religions you will find that every solstice or holiday that is celebrated by a Pagan religion has in some way been subjugated by the Christian faith as their own holidays. People need to do more research on other religions if you are to be tolerant of others. As a Pagan I am studying other religions and notice similarities in every one. We should not be condemning people because of their religious beliefs. Who are we to say which religion is the right one we are not the God/dess.

    OBAMA IS NOT MUSLIM. HE NEVER WAS MUSLIM. He was not raised muslim. He was primarily raised by white christian grandparents. His father left when Obama was two years old, and did not see him but briefly see him again until he was a teenager; then only very briefly. One should not be crucified and condemned, nor should they be held accountable for the beliefs of their ancestors. MY own parents were fundamentalist penecostal christians. MY beliefs are totally different from them! Why would anyone hold me accountable for my parents beliefs!?? It is ludicrous. Many right wing, republicans simply WANT Obama to be declared a muslim and the truth be damned!
