Perhaps someone, some repub can tell me what MCCain's spiritual guide Rev. Haggai meant when he said that it was God's will for Hitler to murder the Jews in the holocaust. I mean it should be fair game since you people want to include morality and leaders in the same conversation. I could go on but let me from you about that comment. And remember, you are not answering when you deny or have amnesia or try now to talk the relationship down. I think McCain may share some of Haggai's beliefs about maybe calling the Catholic church a Great Whore. I will be waiting for your replies.

Thank you! Some one finally has brought up McCain's pastor "buddy" and he is a whole lot worse than the Rev. Wright. Incidentally, Obama attended Trinity United Church but if anyone cares to read the article in "Newsweek" it is obvious he was not a frequent church-goer. Therefore, the possibility exists that he actually never heard the rantings of Rev. Wright. Think about it people. There are very few Americans who attend church every Sunday. Anway, Obama's religion or lack of it should not in any way define him as presidential material. His intelligence, humanity, humility, charismatic personality, and experience in helping people make him more than qualified. Go Obama 08!!!

    .
WHERE CAN I BUY A LARGE PRINT COPY OF MR. DuBOIS's CURRENT ONLINE ILLSUTRATION OF BARACK OBAMA?

I'm hoping Newsweek writers/journalists Lisa Miller and Richard Wolffe don't take this personal, but I know everything I need to know regarding Senator Obama's path to faith. But what I really would like to know is whether Newsweek's Gerard DuBois illustration of Obama's image against religious stained glass window (seen flashing by on online homepage) is being marketed. I really would like a copy.

To paraphrase a famous quote, " . . .a picture can speak a thousand words". Newsweek's online use of Mr. Gerard DuBois image of Obama in the forefront of stained glass windows speaks volumes. When copies of the illustration are license for marketing, I will definitely get my large print copies of the "Chosen One".

    GOD BLESS AMERICA!
    GOD BLESS OBAMA!

Better to say, "God won't bless America, if we bless Obama."

I have read Black Liberation Theology several years ago and it is DEVISIVE in every way possible. A person who carries those beliefs has no business being president of the United States.

Agreed...I've also studied up on BLT and find it extremely divisive, anti-white and full of hate. So much for uplifting.

Who wrote the book, David Duke, or a Black Republican like Larry Elder

          James Cone

          • Posted By: mypov123 @ 07/13/2008 5:37:20 PM

            From the News & Observer - http://www.newsobserver.com/ :
"Cone wrote that the United States was a white racist nation and that the white church was the Antichrist for having supported slavery and segregation. Today, Cone, a professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York, makes clear that he doesn't believe that whites individually are the Antichrist.

Today, Cone, a professor at Union Theological Seminary in New York, stands by that view, but also makes clear that he doesn't believe that whites individually are the Antichrist.

Consider the racial climate in the U.S during which Cone wrote his books and expressed his views, race relations then were much more contentious than they are now, thankfully.

I find that your description of Obama's relgious beliefs mirrors the trend in America - "pick and choose Chrisitanity" as a major study in MN described. Rather than depending on outside revelation we have the luxury of a "smorgasbord" of religious options that fit our personal experiences. However, it will be difficult to predict what Obama's beliefs will be in the future as his experiences change and his beliefs are tested under stress. Thanks for this helpful summary article.

  • Posted By: derylh @ 07/13/2008 5:36:34 PM

The question here is less about Obama's religion than it is about his honesty and intent. There is no religious litmus-test to be president, so why would he hide the fact that he's a Muslim? Because he knows he could never be elected if he declared his true religiion, and he has an agenda to accomplish as president. I hope and pray we never find out first-hand what that agenda is, and I believe the majority of the American people are not so brain-dead as to allow that to happen.

STOP THE HYPOCRISY! If the single, most important, all consuming reason anyone would vote for a candidate is whether he is YOUR BRAND of christian, then by golly you deserve to get crooks and liars, deceivers and hoodwinkers in public service like what we have now in the Bush Administration! IF you do not know this, you have not been paying attention, and should just vote for McCain and shut up already

    • Posted By: mimc @ 07/13/2008 5:36:27 PM

If the media was my only source for "paying attention", then I wouldn't know there was any other candidate in this race.

They chose to inject Christianity and Obama in the same sentance in a ruse to avoid his Muslim back ground. That's what all this is about. And it seems to be working since the subject was perposely poised in that direction has made everyone think about how much a Christian he is, instead of him defending how Muslim he's not.

Why is it that no one seems to be consumed with interest in John McCain's faith and religious belief system as they are with Senator Obama?

    • Posted By: NYREEDAWN @ 07/13/2008 5:35:48 PM

Everyone seems to be consumed with Barack's religion. There are so many notable Americans in high places and no one questons their religion, but just because it is Barack, who from day one said where he lived and that he has adopted Chrisianity as his religion, why do people continue to doubt him? Those who doubt him do not themselves understand the Christian scriptures that says, "Judge not, so that you wouldn't be judged also." For 20 years the man has been affiliated with a Christian Denomination and no one wants to give him that as evidence to support his religion. No person has come forward and said duriing the past 20 years, he has been attending Muslim Mosques, but yet they continue to to doubt his words. Well, hold on to what you want. It is time you stop forcing down your brand of religion on him. He has given you his word accept it. What about John McCain? He goes to church? He has a relationship with Christ? Go question that. What does he believe? It is time those who do not want to accept what Barack says about his religion start stand up and write about the religious beliefs of all the Senators of the United States. That would keep you busy. America has done it's share of wrong. Perhaps we should all begin to pray for the forgiveness of the Nation. The word says, "If my people who are called by my name would humble themselves and seek my face and turn from their 'wickedness' and pray, I will hear from heaven and heal the land." The scripture also says, "the Nation that forgets God, it is destined to ruin." That should be your greatest concern, not the religion of a man who has laid it out to you from the outset. It is easy for you to believe everyone else, but you can't Barack? You put your trust in others who have done great evil, but a man that comes giving a message that you honestly know is genuine, you cannot accept. Go dip in the Jordan river, for many of you are laden with blemishes that need cleansing."

Duh, probably because this is a blog for an article concerning Obama and religion... Only a guess...

If Senator Obama will lie to us about being a Christian, which I agree, he definitely is not, what will he lie to us about when he is President? If integrity is no longer a requisite to be President of the USA we are doomed to suffer the consequences of our stupidity.

  • Posted By: markus11 @ 07/13/2008 5:11:54 PM

WHY DONT PEOPLE JUST BE HONEST ABOUT HOW THEY FEEL ABOUT GOD. PEOPLE NEED TO REMEMBER THAT GOD HAS GIVEN US EVERYTHING WE HAVE. I BELIEVE IT IS A GREAT THING TO SHARE HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR RELIGION. IT SHOULD BE SHARED THEN PEOPLE KNOW EXACTLY WHERE YOU STAND, SO NO ONE WILL QUESTION WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM. MR OBAMA OR MR MCAIN SHOULD LEAD BY EXAMPLE AND SHOW WHAT REAL LEADERS CAN DO AND SHOW TO THE PEOPLE OF OUR NATION.THAT THEY HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO LEAD OUR COUNTRY.

I think Obama reflects the major trend in American religion - "pick and choose Christianity" as one major study in MN termed it. We approach religion through the lens of our personal experience rather than by looking to outside revelation. We have the luxury of a random "smorgasbord" of eclectic religious thoughts - non of which have necessarily been tried under stress - and therefore unlikely to provide much coherence to predict what Obama might choose to believe as his future experiences change. I appreciate Newsweek's attempt to summarize Obama's religious beliefs and find them a mirror to much of our society's beliefs. Thanks!

I am relieved that we have an intelligent person running for president who thinks for himself, not just believes what is told to him by one church or the other. Obama has given consideration to many religions, and it seems that his liberalism really does reflect the best of Christianity - loving your neighbor, not judging, etc. I for one am happy to vote for him, not for another robotic, church-going hypocrite who judges others, including all different religions in the world. p.s. I am a white, Christian, doctorate-educated woman in the midwest. No problems with Obama's race, and all of the other intelligent people I know are excited to vote for him, too.

    • Posted By: Curata et Industria @ 07/13/2008 5:30:10 PM

Seems you are confusing Judgment with Discernment . You are judging others and not discerning thier motives and ideals. Your world view I discern is Liberal, socialist, Humanist Manifesto, Politically correct, willing to forgo personal integraty for communal beliefs. Your mix of new age religious beliefs lack defense of logic or pointed debate. I suggest you read the works of Charles Spurgon, or Chuck Swindoll as a start. Instead of making up a religion, why not go to the Source of Truth (fidelity to the original) the Bible?

    • Posted By: fonsoc @ 07/13/2008 5:27:53 PM

Pam F - Whatever else you are you certainly cannot call yourself Christian and vote for anyone who would advocate the murder of babies in the womb and homosexual relations of any kind. If you think those things are allright with you then you are serving another master and his name is not Jesus Christ! You are among those liberal religionists who call themselves Christian and like to throw the judgmental word around ( which by the way is a judgment on your part ) while absolving yourself of judging. Get a grip on reality! God is not pleased with abortion, homosexuality and lesbianism or anyone who supports them.

This article is the usual media whitewash I've come to expect when the subject is Obama. Am I the only one who finds it passing strange that in every story about Obama and his religion (including Snopes) the authors go out of their way to build up Obama as a Christian and ridicule any reference to the possibility that he could be a Muslim ( "But rumors about Obama's religion persist. In the new NEWSWEEK Poll, 12 percent of voters incorrectly believe he's Muslim; more than a quarter believe he was raised in a Muslim home."). If being raised by a Muslim step-father does not constitute being raised in a Muslim home, what does? Methinks the media doth protest too much; is this a concerted effort to cover up something? I believe it is.

  • Posted By: GrimFang4 @ 07/13/2008 5:24:34 PM

This is too long of an article without actually getting to the point... It should have just been converted to a book entitled, "No, Obama is not a Christian". A Christian must see the Bible as fact or else they have a baseless faith that has nothing to do with Jesus and quickly resembles all faiths or no faith at all. Maybe he's just confused like the surprisingly large portion of Christians who took part in the Pew survey. Multiple paths to eternal life? What an illogical statement. How about one or none?

    WHAT IS OBAMA'S MIDDLE NAME?
    WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Yes, this parents used his grandfathers muslim name instead of his grandfathers Christian name which was Johnson for some reason.

Obama threw his name iunder the bus. He does not use it as it wouldnt be politically expedient. Reason why he also started wearing a flag pin, finally split from his church after the third round of Rev Wright rantings, the list goes on. He is just another slick politician.

CAN WE JUST CUT TO THE CHASE HERE, PLEASE?

Christians bought the whole religious SHOW that GW Bush put on and elected him. He talked about Jesus and said "God Bless America" and talked about his faith AD NAUSEUM! Many of us now know he was and IS one huge Fake! IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT? IS THE ONLY THING THAT IS IMPORTANT IN A CANDIDATE THAT HE BE IN YOUR FACE, ULTRA RELIGIOUS.......OUTWARDLY? THINK! Just look where that got us!

    • Posted By: fonsoc @ 07/13/2008 5:18:40 PM

It isn't that Christians are concerned about whether the President is Christian but rather that Obama is lying when he claims to be a Christian but then favirs anti-Christian and anti-family things such as abortion and homosexual and lesbian lifestyles in any respect. Then he further lies and perverts his so-called Christian faith by saying there are diverse ways to Heaven when Christ adamantly declared that He is the ONLY WAY to Heaven.

Any man who deliberately lies about such an important personal issue certainly cannot be trusted to tell the truth about anything.

The only reason people say Obama is a Muslin is because they can't be honest and just say

Obama's religious view is post-modern, secular humanist, liberal. That is his world view.

Traditional Christianity has a different view. It dow not incllued Abortion (Susan B. Anthony fought against it)
It does not include other "religions on the same plane (It does not worship or cultivate a relationship with stone and wood) Christianity seeks to reestablish relationship with God himself.

Obama's mix of Afro-American influence, liberal post-modern Humanis Manifesto culture and liberal politics
seeking to gain power and influence, rather that being a servant-leader after the model of Jesus has been demonstrated time and again.

  • Posted By: IgnoranceDestroys @ 07/13/2008 4:44:54 PM

THE TRUTH IS: MANY of you would not vote for Obama EVEN IF he said the words "Jesus Christ" or preached christianity every time he spoke! You want him to be exactly like YOUR brand; your idea; YOUR vision of what a christian is! Line up a thousand different christians of different denominations and then ask them "What is a christian" and you'd get a whole plethora of different answers!

Thank you. These two posts of yours hit the figurative nail on the head. There is a dire need in this country for a rational assesment of government and policy with religion being kept out of it as much as possible. We must live our beliefs through our actions, put our money where our mouths are, and if one truly wants to live in an isolated society based on a specific religion, they need to go and join up with one of the many cultish compounds that will happily take all of their money 'for God's work' of course, and provide their lives with the desired feeling of constant impending doom and apocalytic fervor. I however live happily in the United States of America where I have freedom of religion and engage in a constructive and fullfilling life with liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
