I am a self-described "Evangelical" Christian who is also a registered Democrat and will be supporting Barack Obama in the Fall. My take on it is this: When a person comes to Christ, what they receive automatically is salvation. What is not automatic or immediate is revelation and regeneration. It is my view that the vast majority of Christians (people who have accepted/confessed with thier mouths Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior), including Sen. Obama, fall into this category of having salvation, yet still striving for greater revelation and spiritual regeneration. Even Jesus' disciples didn't really "get it" (exactly who He was and the exclusive nature of his Deity) until after He was gone, and they spent more time with him than anyone else....In terms of regeneration, the Bible speaks very clearly that (Christians) should strive to have "the mind of Christ" and to "renew our minds". This lets us know that as Christians, understanding doesn't just magically download to us. Being a Christian doesn't mean that we won't ever have doubts. We have to "unlearn" some of the humanistic, intellectual and sensual (things based on the five senses) assumptions that we have been taught since birth and embrace the revelation of Jesus Christ as THE Way, THE Truth and THE Life. We must embrace FAITH, which by its nature means belief in what is not discerned with our senses and sometimes that means believing in what seems improbable or even impossible. That doesn't happen overnight, some people spend a lifetime "getting it", but they are still true Christians. Jesus spent his life embracing and TEACHING those who weren't "super spiritual or religious", who didn't know all the rules and who had kinda "out there" views, but who had a propensity to believe and were willing to learn. I believe that Senator Obama is such a person and that if we as Christians insist on fingerpointing and trying to see who is more Christian than the next person, we will miss a golden opportunity to touch the heart of the king (the President). Remember, Christianity is as prevalent as it is today because someone took the time to sit down and share their faith and "reason with" Constantine. I believe Sen. Obama has received salvation and this endeavor is moving him ever closer to greater revelation and regeneration. Now I'm not saying that I believe Obama will have an 'epiphany' and suddenly try to turn the country into a Theocracy or something extreme like that. I'm just saying that when someone says that Jesus is their Lord, who are we to say that He isn't. Obama strikes me as someone who will at least hear you out, even if he doesn't agree with you, will chew on what is discussed and come to his own conclusion, and that is someone we can work with!

THEN HE SHOULD PRAY ABOUT THE ABORTION STANCE HE'S TAKEN AS A SELF PROFESSED CHRISTIAN LIKE YOUR SELF MAYBE YOU SHOULD TELL HIM THAT ABORTIONS ARE AGAINST THE WILL OF GOD AND TELL HIM THAT THE ONLY WAY TO THE FATHER IS THROUGH JESUS AND THAT THERE IS A HELL BECAUSE WHO EVER BEEN TEACHING HIM ABOUT CHRIST MUST HAVE FORGOT TO MENTION THESE THINGS TO HIM UNLESS OF COURSE HE TAKES IT UPON HIMSELF TO SAY THAT JESUS'S SEMON DON'T APPLY TO GAYS GETTING MARRIED! HE HAS SAID THAT THERE ARE MANY PATHS TO HEAVEN MAYBE TO PACIFY HIMSELF BECAUSE HIS MOTHER DID NOT ACCEPT CHRIST OR THAT ABORTION IS A WOMAN'S CHOICE AND THAT JESUS WOULD NOT WANT A TEENAGER PUNISHED WITH A BABY I DON'T KNOW WHAT OBAMA BELIEVES BUT I DO KNOW IT IS NOT WHAT CHRISTIANS ARE TAUGHT !!

Someone should have aborted you. I had no idea we had so many nut-jobs running around until November of 2004, but MAN they are coming out of the woodwork now!!

Is it sad that the MSM spends so much time disspelling propaganda about Obama?

Or is it sad that Americans are so dimwitted that the MSM has to spend so much time dispelling these psy-ops?

    I guess it's all sad.......PERFECT............but really................

Why in hell would I vote for the tragedians? ....................... The way I see it, the GOP lost all concept of justice.

Democrats on the other hand, are still pro-choice, pro-consumer, pro-education, pro-civil liberties, pro-net-neutrality!!!, pro-healthcare, pro-gay rights, pro-environment, anti poverty, anti Iraq war, anti trying to teach our kids ID in science class rooms.............

The way the world looks to me right now.........and believe me...I've been paying close attention to our leaders these last 15 years................. I can tell you in no uncertain terms.......that ONLY Democrats will get my vote....and the Democrats win in 08.....there is no debate.

In spite of Newsweeks efforts to dispell uncertainty surrounding Obama's beliefs, he remains inexperienced and way too much ( pardon the pun) a dark horse for President. There is something....I can't put my finger on it.....and it is not race....I just don't feel a trust for the man or his wife....It just isn't going to happen... not in this election.

I tell you, I do not know how I ever survived without Obama. Before my savior, Obama, I was a self-sufficient individual, masters degree in business and thought I knew what was best for my family. That was before I found out the Obama had a plan for me. I now look to him for guidance and to direct my life.

Without Obama, each and every one of us would be nothing. We owe our very existence to Obama. The rising of the sun is because Obama wishes it and wants to give us warmth.

Vote for Obama! If you do not then the world will end because our enemy, the Republican devil himself, will make us think for ourselves. Obama, please save me!

Oh brave new world! Oh Obama! Please think for me. Give me Soma so I don't have to think. All I want to hear to pretty, inspirational speeches about a socialist utopia with furry little bunny rabbits hopping around. Please tell me you have a "plan" for me.

Tax all of my salary, take away my 1st and 2nd amendment rights, take away my private healthcare, take away my SUV, and raise my family for me. Please, save me from myself.

EVERYONE, vote for Obama and he will save you too.

McCain, use your vast experience and all knowing knowledge to make my world better.

Kill my kids, cut the rich some more tax breaks while placing the burden on the middle class, and continue to eliminate our constitutional rights. Put a bunch of nazi-like conservative aholes in the Supreme Court so we can turn back the clock to 1835. "

EVERYONE vote for John McCain so he can save you too...

TO NEWSWEEK: How many covers with Obama will we have to endure. I am a subscriber and I think I've reached a point where I will have to cancel my subscription. While I identify democrat, I am also interested in reading what Republicans and Independents think. I want to be informed! I do not appreciate your in-your-face sale of barack obama. When I look at my stack of neewsweeks from the last couple of months, it appears that just about everyone is about OBama. I could win a jeopardy contest if the Topic was the Obamas, yet I know nothing of the McCains. By way of example, the one issue that had Cindy McCain was nothing compared to the MANY you've done about the Obama's. Even that issue was not entirely about Cindy M. All I learned is that at one point she was adicted to painkillers. You can do better. I lost count of the number of times you've clarify for the public that obama is not a muslim. We get it! if there is any still any doubt, let Obama do his own clarifying - he has enough funds to do it without you free ads.

      OK.

      Obama is a good person.

If Senator Obama wins the election, he can thank Newsweek for giving him plenty of exposure on the cover. I understand that Obama is a political "rock star" right now. However, how about giving some face time on the cover to Senator McCain? I would love to read more about Senator McCain's heroic efforts in the Vietnam War and his true dedication to our country! Also, concerning the article of Senator Obama "Finding his Faith", the man has had some many influences in his life that I am not sure he even knows what he believes. How can a person that is so confused about his own background and religious upbringing succesfully lead our country?

    • Posted By: thrasher32 @ 07/16/2008 4:35:21 PM

You must have meant "when" Obama wins this election.

McCain is already on the cover of "Uneducated Redneck" magazine, so you're covered.

I don't understand why americans are all of sudden religious when it comes to Obama or in this so-called war on terrorism. I think Obama is an idiot, no doubt. But the people who are going to vote have to pick the lesser idiot, and that is obama. mc cain is just a repeat of bush and friends show, and who wants that again. If obama see's the European dipiction of christ to be his salvation then leave him to this, why do people all of a sudden become critics who quote a bible that has been changed several times. Jesus taught and then disapeared from the earth then a man who never met jesus and did not follow Jesus's teaches appeared 50 years later his name was paul. Paul taght another religion and said he did this in Jesus's name, but waqs later killed by a real christain. Then the trinitarians appeared, and slaughtered the unitarians because they believed in one God and not 3 gods and for other political gains. Then this new religion was brought to Europe and then a group broke off and became prodastents and now christians in america have over 25o sects all interipeting the bible the way they choose. So why can't obama do the same?

Fruitless though his efforts were, Obama devoted more than 100 pages to his experiences at Altgeld Gardens and surrounding areas. Michelle Obama has said his work as a community organizer helped him decide ???how he would impact the world,??? assisting people to improve their lives. Yet, in a revealing passage in his book, Obama wrote, ???When classmates in college asked me just what it was that a community organizer did, I couldn???t answer them directly.???

Thus, Obama admitted that he accomplished little but that he was able to cover that up with fancy talk about change.
Contrary to Obama???s portrayal of himself as a unifier, on every bipartisan effort in the Senate to forge compromises on tough issues, Obama has been missing in action.

In sum, it would be difficult to imagine a more mediocre record. Most candidates for dog catcher have contributed more to society. Yet with the help of adoring reporters, Obama has managed to parlay extraordinary speaking and political skills into a presidential campaign built on sand.

The idea that America might entrust its security and future to someone who has never demonstrated an ability to get anything of significance done is scary.

Look for John McCain to begin exploiting this vulnerability after Labor Day

I'm really sorry -- I meant to address that to sjpersonal - who sounds a little off their rocker. Maybe sjpersonal should take the day off a do a little research - could start on McCain's anger management - he seems to have the same problem: In his 1992 Senate bid, McCain was joined on the campaign trail by his wife, Cindy, as well as campaign aide Doug Cole and consultant Wes Gullett. At one point, Cindy playfully twirled McCain's hair and said, "You're getting a little thin up there." McCain's face reddened, and he responded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c#nt." McCain's excuse was that it had been a long day. If elected president of the United States, McCain would have many long days.

    • Posted By: sjpersonal @ 07/16/2008 1:47:15 PM

Are you sure that you are addressing me??? Because I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I am definitely not a McCain supporter. you might want to recheck who you are replying to.

Considering your reply to who the hell knows, I will not address your comment that I sound off my rocker LOL! Especially when you repeat information that I posted weeks ago about McCain calling his wife a C @nt & a Trollop???????????????????????????????????????????????

This is off-topic, but Jean-Paul Sartre was the father of Existentialism, NOT Friedrich Nietzsche.

    • Posted By: josemarti @ 07/16/2008 1:36:08 PM

Off topic and wrong. Where did you go to school? Middlebury? Did you ever hear of Soren Kierkegaard?

  • Posted By: mj it @ 07/16/2008 12:34:53 PM

Yeah perryphrase -- you seem like a good Christian. So maybe you could be the one to answer my question:

On what Christian path was McCain taking when he abandoned his disabled wife and 3 kids for a much younger, richer beer heiress - whom he then abandoned after her stroke to learn to walk on her own?

What Christian path was McCain taking?

  • Posted By: mj it @ 07/16/2008 12:23:40 PM

Sharenews -- you sound like you're kind of losing it this morning. Maybe you should take the day off. I'm actually concerned. And maybe while you're taking some time off - relax and look up James Baker (the guy that got Bush into office in 2000) James Baker defended the Saudis against the families of the 9/11 victims. They sued the terrorists over their loved ones lost in the attack on U.S. soil. The investigation followed the money that funded Bin Laden to the Saudis - so who defended the Saudis against the families of the victims of 9/11? James Baker's law firm.

  • Posted By: perryphrase @ 07/16/2008 9:31:04 AM

"My particular set of beliefs," Obama says, "may not be perfectly consistent with the beliefs of other Christians." A Christian's beliefs do not have to be consistent with the beliefs of other Christians. But shouldn't they be consistent with the very words of Christ? Jesus claimed to be the exclusive and only way to God. Scripture says, "And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12, NASB).

How long will it be before Newsweek publishes another issue that does not have Obama's picture on the cover. Your shameless pimping for a candidate is destroying your reputation as a news source.

    • Posted By: john cain @ 07/15/2008 12:43:54 PM

Newsweek is a liberal publication so you would not expect unbiased reporting.

      • Posted By: GringoViejo @ 07/16/2008 9:01:27 AM

Then they need to change the name from Newsweek to the Obama Weekly.

OBAMA's stance in Iraq is correct.THE IRAQI's must take control of their own security and U.S. troops must begin comming home by 2010. The nucleus of Al Queda is in AFGANISTAN AND PAKISTAN. IF they are defeated then there is no more AL Queda in IRAQ. Obama's assessment of refocusing the war on terror to AFGANISTAN AND PAKISTAN was most impressive.

What shocked me was his stance on the wiretapping bill. This is a clear violation of our privacy rights as AMERICANS. Unfortunately, this is just the tip of the iceberg. In 2010 REAL ID's will become law. Eventually the government will have all our personal information on a chip. I WAS VERY VERY DISAPPOINTED IN OBAMA's vote on this issue.

OUR CONSITITUTION IS ALL WE HAVE TO PROTECT OURSELVES AGAINST GOVERNMENTS WHO OVER REACH THEIR POWERS. WHAT MAKES OUR COUNTRY GREAT IS THE CHECKS AND BALANCES THAT ARE IN PLACE.

THE RATIONAL behind voting in favor of this bill cannot really be justified. I guess OBAMA is trying to show he can work with Republicans and is willing to comprimise. Inotherwords he voted for this controversial bill and will be able to use his vote as leverage for a bill he really wants passed in the future.

OBAMA has a fifty state strategy and has a good chance of winning four states which are traditionally republican strongholds, in the fall. He can make the case that he can work with Republicans and Democrats to get things done. IT is inevitable that one day these wire tap laws will be abused at the expense of our privacy. What is the big deal in getting a warrant. THIS IS WHAT PROTECTs US AMERICANS AGAINST POTENTIAL GOVERNMENT INTRUSION.

I DO NOT THINK AMERICANS REALLY UNDERSTAND THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS USING TERRORISM AS AN EXECUSE TO INVADE OUR PRIVACY. WE ALREADY HAVE PRIVACY ISSUES WITH CREDIT CARD COMPANIES AND CORPORATIONS WHO TRADE OUR PERSONAL INFORMATION AMONGST THEMSELVES TO INCREASE THEIR PROFITS.

THERE has not been one attack on AMERICAN SOIL SINCE 9/11. DURING THIS TIME WE DID NOT HAVE A WIRETAPPING BILL. SOMEHOW A CITIZEN GROUPS NEED TO ORGANIZE OURSELVES AND START FIGHTING TO GET OUR PRIVACY RIGHTS BACK.
