I have a question: McCain is 71 (or 72)...can he handle the presidency? NO! Anyone that does not see the cover of The New Yorker as racism, is a racist! McCain 2008, are you kidding me? This are bad now, and with McCain in office, things will be worse. He does not have a clue...is he the BEST that the Repubs could do? I am a Republican, but I am voting for BARACK OBAMA 2008 AND 2012!

Obviously anyone that thinks that The New Yorker cover is not racism, they are racist. McCain 2008, are you kidding me? If McCain can muster up a win, we are doomed! I mean, let a Democrat clean up the mess that Republicans have caused over the last 8 years! Honestly, McCain is 71...what can he do?
    OBAMA 2008 AND 2012!

Appears NewYorker has been reading my posts on NewsWeak. Pretty accurate description, all in all. Hope the cartoonist doesn't get whacked.

Go crawl back under the rock you came out from underneath - more liberal thinking: "Don't confuse me with the facts, I've got my mind made up." Obama's ancestry is well documented and the facts of his childhood are very well known - indisputable. His current belief's fit quite well with his past and his relationship with Rev. Wright has shaped not only himself, but his wife and his children in the same fashion that his mother's choice of schooling for him has influenced who he is today. He is a con artist and a flim-flam man that you morons would elevate to the highest office of this great country. Sad, very sad indeed. MCCAIN 2008..!

Just another example of the biased crap that NEWS, I mean Obamaweek publishes. Your magazine is a joke.

Do not know if Mr Alter works for Newsweek as a journalist or a campaign spokesman for Obama...
His further discussion and defense on this subject does not serve well in elevating his candidate but rather shows that the press is willing to sacrifce its self for Obama...Whats the difference between the cover and Muslims wanting to kill the Danish cartoonist who dipicted Mohammed in a disparaging way...

What is it with you wannabe hippes from the 70's, the US will not and is not considering the draft. Considering Obama has never been involved in any type of international diplomacy, what makes him an expert? There is no global warming crisis, at least not one caused by man. It is a natural occurring event, check your history and you will see the warming and iceing of the planet has occurred numerous times, many times befor man was ever on earth. I have nothing against Obama himself, just his pure lack of experience and questionable associations with radical groups. I'm not a big McCain fan, but I trust him to protect me and my family, and doing the right thing regardless of politics.

    • Posted By: 4carol @ 07/15/2008 9:56:56 AM

Just because you're a Steeler, I won't hold it against you; but you don't really read much, do you???
If you do have a family, and if you want a better world for them, you won't vote for MCCain!! That is unless, of course, you're rich and then you don't care about much else.

      • Posted By: aad135 @ 07/15/2008 6:41:24 PM

Carol - that is the most generalize piece of crap statement that I have ever read. The are SOOOO many liberal ideas that scare me that I will not vote for this fraud, or any other far-left voting (and Obama's Senate record states that poistion VERY clearly) candidate. As a conservative, I hold strong to those positions, but I know so many liberals who flip and flop all over the place on their views; I have a brother-in-law who ran for county govenment as a republican because he was advised by my liberal brother-in-law news anchor that a republican candidate had the best chance at being elected. Then, when he did not make it through the primaries, he outed for the democrat candidate. By the way, he also owns more hand guns and rifles than I do! No wonder he's a devout Obamaton; the candidate for change. MCCAIN 2008..!

Highlighting the arguments of the kookiest detractors is a great way to defend someone however it draws attention away from legitimate criticisms. I have yet to hear anyone question Senator Obama on his views concerning Liberation Theology. If he supports it then he is the political leader of leftist radicalism as the New Yorker depicted him. If he opposes Liberation Theology, he is an opportunist who used his political connections at church for 20 years to further his own political agenda. If, as he has stated, he is unaware of the radicalism of Liberation Theology as held by Reverend Wright then he is so naive his ignorance calls his judgement into question. Thus there are no positive outcomes for Senator Obama regarding a discussion of Liberation Theology. That may be why the New Yorker and the mass media outlets are staying away from this topic.

    • Posted By: aad135 @ 07/15/2008 6:18:35 PM

Chuck - great insight, this is why he'll never broach this subject, a definate Catch-22 for him politically. This re-affirms my belief that Obama is nothing more than a snake oil saleman, without substance or message. MCCAIN 2008..!

  • Posted By: ToadTreeHugger @ 07/15/2008 6:17:51 PM

It's Newsweek's own fault for "dumbing down" mainstream America, like all the other MSM outlets. It's no surprise then that Newsweek and the general public misunderstand the satire in the New Yorker cover.

  • Posted By: ogdeeds @ 07/15/2008 4:33:32 PM

how sweet.....jonathon alter defending his BFF, BO....if it was hillary or mccain, I doubt he would be so miffed. the cover is hillarious and there is ALWAYS an element of truth in humor! as you say, there's just enough truth in the cover page to make it seem real. BO should quit trying to disparage muslims by saying it is a smear against him. after all, he's the one who dressed up in muslin garb then tried to hide the picture for being shown, he's the one who went to a muslin school, had a muslin father and a muslin stepfather....(and no, he didn't grow up fatherless like he likes to portray himself. he went to elite private schools growing up and had a pretty good life compared to the average american. what was he anyway, before becoming a christian??? right....let's not go there. he's such a fake! and of course, the MSM continues to carry his water and to disparage anyone who so much as says anthing against him that might be construed as 'not nice'....even if it's another magazine like the new yorker, like newsweek has NEVER shown a bias for or against anyone.....please....if BO and msm cant take it....there isn't much there. the msm continues to disgust me....

    • Posted By: lincwright @ 07/15/2008 6:15:36 PM

      Ogdeeds,
First of all it's "muslim" not "muslin". Yes, Obama had a father who was once a muslim, but he became an atheist long before Obama was born. Obviously, growing up in Indonesia, the largest Muslim nation in the world, Obama was exposed to Muslim culture. Despite that, he chose to convert to Christianity years ago. Why do you say he's "such a fake!"? Do you doubt his conversion? You think he's secretly still a practicing Muslim? And, if he somehow was faking being a Christian, going to a Christian church for 20 years, so what? What's wrong with being Muslim? What if the democratic nominee was a practicing Muslim? Would that mean he's a terrorist or something? Not sure I see your point.

Funny, can't find a Newsweek article related to their latest poll (14 Jul) which has Obama only 3 points ahead of McCain which is within the margin of error. This one was done by a Princeton group. Their last poll last month (20 Jun) had Obama ahead of McCain by 15 points. Gee imagine McCain making up 12 points in less than a month! Got to give the old geezer credit. Or maybe Newsweek realized that their first poll was for (fill in the blank)! A propaganda piece like the LA Times poll which had Obama ahead by 12 points.

Having seen many comments on Newsweek's website, I'd say the New Yorker cover pretty much covers the sentiment of the Political Right. I'd thought it was funny b'ce it covered a lot of perception about Obama & Michelle that's on the web (front the Right Wing Nut). Those who believes in these kind of things are fervent in their belief. Eventually, American will have to decide, whether to believe or not to believe. Since the meek shall inherit the earth, I think more folks then less will buy into these lies. At least it's out there and people are talking about it. At the end of the day, it's about whose more motivated to come out and vote. Maybe the question to ask yourself is have it had enough? Enough corporate greed, enough bank failures, enough high gas prices, enough high food prices. Enough policies that just don't work.

  • Posted By: old scout @ 07/15/2008 1:59:27 PM

I have supported Obama all the way because I was so impressed with his speech in 2004. I got mad at him when he compromised on the FISA legislation and when he started talking about faith based programs. I am a purist when it comes to the Bill of Rights. But then I thought about what he has been saying about bringing people together to end the polarization. He has always said that. He can't do it without moving to the center when it makes sense. We will have a court review of government eavesdropping, which is more than Bush wanted to have. We will have an active and supervised program of helping faith based groups to perform non-religious activities for those in need. i'm nervous about all this. But I see that he is a different kind of politician, and I am willing to believe that he can make it work and that he should be given a chance.
And there is the undeniable note of reconciliation between the races that his presidency could bring. I could tolerate a lot of policy mistakes if he could just start to heal the racial animosity in this country. It would be really wonderful if he turns out to be the one who can move beyond opposing positions and identify underlying interests that can serve us all. I think that is why the young support him. They think in those terms more than the older people do.

    • Posted By: bbmill243 @ 07/15/2008 2:46:34 PM

I respect your thoughts and in no way am I trying to insult you, but I would hope this country would not elect someone just to be "given the a chance".
Furthermore, Many of the young people(not all of them) know only what they see on the one or two music channels they stay tuned in to all day. They have no idea what they are even voting for.
Good example: If you ask some of my friends in the younger age group "Who are you voting for", they say obama. When asked why, the answer is almost always "because I don't like the government we have". But when asked why they do not care for the current government, there is not a single one that can answer that question.
People need to start realizing that they can not continue to blame the government for every problem they have. People have begun to look at the Federal government like a parent who should keep bailing their child out every time they get in trouble.

I fall into that "younger" group and I have indeed done enough research and opened my mind enough to see past Obama's wonderful speeches. I by no means agree with everything our president does, but the name "George Bush" should not be blamed for every problem in our country. We cant forget our Democratic house and Senate who would rather see this nation die before they would dare say they agree with George Bush.
There is a lot more at stake in this election than racism and gas prices. I hope people start to realize that before November.

      • Posted By: Glo4u056 @ 07/15/2008 4:27:28 PM

Hold it, smart one. Congress only became Democratic in 06, what about the 6 years leading up to 06, yes the blame can be laid at GW Bush's feet, you had better believe it and it can also rest at your feet for voting for this man. How do you sleep at night knowing that over 4,000 of our people have been killed in the name of nothing, because just like your post implies your research has only begun. But you really don't have to research anything, we are living this disaster every day.

        • Posted By: bbmill243 @ 07/15/2008 5:43:47 PM

Oh, I have held it long enough "smart One". Your so called "disaster has gotten much worse in the past 2 yearssince the dems got in than it has ever been. Bush has had no chance to succeed mainly because of these same democrats that could't care less where this country ends up, as long as they are in disagreement with Bush. Don't question how much research I have done on the subject. You are exactly the type I was refering to. Let me guess, George Bush made you go late on your mortgage or he single handedly made your gas price go up. Go whine to someone else. And the scary thing about it is that you guys actually believe what you preach. Amazing. Some of you nut jobs out there would not have been happy with the last 8 years had it been Jesus Christ himself as president simply because there was the word Republican behind his name. The last one of your democrat buddies who held the office(BILL) did only one good thing as president.....HE LEFT OFFICE.

I think that's what a lot of people are afraid of. They don't WANT to have open, candid communication about racial and social issues. They want to keep their heads in the sand, because it's easier than the painful truths we will realize, on both sides. Blacks have faults and so do whites, and it's time we discussed them--REALLY discussed them--to bring about a solution. I don't think many of Obama's detractors are ok with that.

  • Posted By: pearsoncrz @ 07/15/2008 5:36:37 PM

"But if misinformation arrives online from someone they've never heard of, they figure it must be true. It's our newest form of cognitive dissonance."

This seems to refute all the baloney on the other blog about McCain being at a disadvantage because he doesn't rely on the web for information.

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 07/15/2008 5:39:08 PM

Actually it is insulting. You don't have to be an Obama supporter to be skeptical of what you read on the internet

  • Posted By: dawsondiane @ 07/15/2008 5:34:20 PM

Wow how un-PC of the New Yorker. The point is not whether the cover was meant as satire or not, it is absolutely the truth. The cartoon cover picture portrays the Obamas accurately. However often they try to disassociate themselves from their pasts, this cartoon shows their past. Barack Obama is the first person of Muslim heritage who is a presidential candidate in the United States. He is the first candidate to be seen in pictures in Muslim dress. Right?? This is a fact. Michelle Obama's history is one of revolutionary writings, association with and belief in the philosophy of the radical "Weathermen" and their ilk.. She is ashamed of her country so far. No matter how much they try to disassociate themselves from their past history, it is still their history. Bill Ayers is their friend, neighbor and supporter. The revolutionary, un-American flag stomping radicals have worked themselves into the elite ranks of academe and now into the highest levels of our American government. The American public needs to know not only who but also what they are voting for so three cheers for the New Yorker's un-PC cover!!!

    • Posted By: News and Notes @ 07/15/2008 5:36:57 PM

Actually it was an ugly and mean cartoon. There are plenty of legitimate complaints one could raise regarding Obama's lack of experience and arrogance. No need for outrageous cartoons

  • Posted By: 4mygirl @ 07/15/2008 4:39:47 PM

I think the cartoon is hilarious, but then I'm not voting for Obama (I will always be for Hillary). If the Obama camp wanted to keep this thing from becoming talk of the week, they should have just laughed it off. They look like the fools in the cartoon for making such a fuss.

Ever since the DNC and party elites pushed Obama to the nomination, his campaign has been going down the toilet. The superdelegates did not fulfill their responsibility.

I've known for years that the New Yorker was a bloated irrelevant mess of a magazine. Seinfeld had it right when they wrote that episode where Elaine confronts a New Yorker editor about their meaningless and unfunny cartoon. I can't imagine a more perfect way to sum up the idiocy of that publication than their feeble attempt at satire. True satirists back to Swift and Voltaire are spinning in their graves. Sad, sad, sad. That magazine needs to go away.
