We are looking at a guy from Chicago where they have 12 murders a week. Obama was a community leader right? He was ingulfed in the church, right? Just what were Obama's priorities for Chicago's communities? Do we know? For many years Obama was in a position to stop the violence in his city. Yet he did nothing at all - he let the black people down. He and his Rev Wright gave the black community more reasons to hate whites and themselves every Sunday afternoon than a handful of text books in an intergrated school. Think about it - what in the world will happen to other cities and communities if Obama does his community organizing in your home town?

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 07/15/2008 3:07:42 PM

Uh, have you ever been to Chicago? Do you realize how big it is, not to mention adding in the suburbs? What a ridiculous statement.

    • Posted By: boulevardofdef @ 07/15/2008 1:57:49 PM

Murders in Chicago in 1997, when Obama entered the Illinois State Senate: 759
Murders in Chicago in 2004, when Obama left the Illinois State Senate: 448

It is, of course, ridiculous to claim that Obama had anything to do with this dramatic decline in the murder rate, just as it is ridiculous to claim that he had anything to do with a nonexistent rise in it.

    • Posted By: mhopgood123 @ 07/15/2008 1:22:12 PM

Dumb comment. What does Obama's organizing have to do with the crime rate? The crime rate in CHicago is just like any other big city. There is crime in CHicago for many reasons. Obama was helping unemployed workers acquire new skills so they could find jobs

As someone who DOES NOT support Obama, all I can say is.... Thank You New Yorker! The power of the images they printed will resonate across the nation... Thank you New Yorker! Thank You!

    McCain 2008!

    • Posted By: summer4077 @ 07/15/2008 2:04:29 PM

Yes, thank you New Yorker! Those intelligent thinkers on the fence will surely see the cartoon as ludicrous, realize the fallacy of all the lies spread about Obama, and know that he is the right choice.

      • Posted By: RDOMINGUEZ @ 07/15/2008 2:08:12 PM

HAHAHA, SUMMER, That's really funny. That is not what the picture alone will do. Who even reads the New Yorker anyway? The image as it has been spread across the news and in the papers will damage Obama. So say what you want summer, the damage is done. Speaking of done, so is Obama! hahahaha hahahaha

        • Posted By: summer4077 @ 07/15/2008 3:05:49 PM

With your last name, you should be an Obama supporter. McCain isn't so friendly to those who aren't rich old white men. Not saying that you're not a rich old white man b/c you may very well be, I'm just saying that they are all gung-ho for racial profiling...someone's last name can make them a target.

      • Posted By: sharenews @ 07/15/2008 3:05:11 PM

You kidding, right? You are not serious here, are you? LMAO

  • Posted By: USA4life @ 07/15/2008 2:57:18 PM

Amen spicegirl, their time has come and gone and they are trying to hold on to the old ways that is so played out its ridiculous. The internet really saved some of these peoples lives because they know damn well they would get slapped in the mouth if they talked all that crap outside of their trailer parks.

  • Posted By: RDOMINGUEZ @ 07/15/2008 2:14:33 PM

Obama is the picture of a dirty politician, one who will lie, cheat and steal to get what he wants. He's changes his positions on various issues just to suit his cause, he's played the race card as do his followers against anyone who does not stand with him. He lies about his opponents credibility, and tries to down-play their experience and patriotism. Obama would probably sell his soul to the devil just to win. Thankfully enough, when it comes down to it, Obama's platform of change is too radical and the rest of us with more than half a brain will stop him come November.... He's bad for business and he's bad for America.

    McCain 2008!

    • Posted By: seattlejoe @ 07/15/2008 2:56:16 PM

I believe you have the names backwards. Hillary is the cheat and liar, Barack is the honest one who refused to comment on this newsweek article and anything else the hillary machine came up with/
remember her 'braveness' when she had to dodge that barrage of gunfire ? get real , just go back a few months, read the papers, relook at news stories to see who the candidtate was that was bashed and continues to be

    • Posted By: USA4life @ 07/15/2008 2:48:49 PM

oh please, you are really pathetic. If you were to make a decision to cross the train tracks but you change your mind because a train is coming..would you be considered a person that flip flops or would you be considered smart enough to stop and change your mind? McCain has even changed his mind on certain issues as with every red blooded-registered American voter..get off your high horse..jackass

  • Posted By: maxbert @ 07/15/2008 2:54:09 PM

Wrong again. Everybody gets New Yorker's (attempted) joke-- the problem is, it's not funny. Even Obama's campaign doesn't think it's funny. Why isn't it? Because satire, to work, must contrast against a well-known reality, and Obama's slender resume and constantly "refined" positions don't give us one. In other words, we do know that he and his wife are not gun-toting, flag-burning nutballs-- but what exactly ARE they?

  • Posted By: RDOMINGUEZ @ 07/15/2008 2:18:34 PM

I'd like to leave you Obama-cult members with a little something, I've been visiting these blogs for months, through the Hillary trials, and now the upcoming election. One thing cannot be more evident, and that is the "Obama-haters" as you call them, is growing. People are waking up, and in just enough time to stop this crazy movement. If you don't believe me just look below, there was a time when I'd spend my days going back in forth with you Obama supporters, but now, I don't have to, because there are so many others like me who know the truth, and that is Obama is not going to be President. Not if we can help it! Obama supporters live in a fantasy, and it's time to wake up.

    • Posted By: sharenews @ 07/15/2008 2:50:03 PM

OMG, I agree that the Obama non supporters have grown, but Hilly got bashed to death. I had to wear a brown helmet and grow Rhino skin to get thru the primaries blogging on this site. LOL

I call the MSM the Mean-Spirited-Media after what they did to Hillary. We all remember how dispicable they were to her:

I think the cover was tasteless and there are a lot of stupid people in this country who will believe. Look to the south that is still full of redneck black hating good ole boys. look to the mid-west where you have a lot of bible toting fools who believe anyone who isn't in their church is the devil incarnate. I mean the Pope even said anyone who isn't catholic is just a pretend christian. So, yes you're cover will have the little old lady in Dubuque believing that Barak is a muslim, they'll believe any lies that the media tells them to believe and as far as the comment posted by hemersam..... who does the flip flopping? who has done the flip flopping for 8 years preceding the Bush administration? I for one am so very glad that it is Barack who will be runing for President, and not Hillary. He has fresh ideas, he is young enough to know what is going on in today's world, he is not one of our 80 year old senate, house reps who still think this is 1920. and he has gotten our young people involved and interested in politics enough to take a stand, to step up enough and say enough is enough, we need change and I believe they will help to make the changes our country so desperately needs. another possible 8 years of a Clinton would have raised our taxes,. during the previous clinton administration our taxes were at 18% and above. with the current administration, our taxes are now around 15% and holding. Bush's tax cuts have helped me tremendously as I am a poor working mother working 2 jobs just to stay afloat. the tax cuts have put a few extra dollars in my pocket so my son was able to be in the band and choir at school and I was able to afford the trips that he needed to go on with those two groups. another cliinton would have denied many children that same opportunity. and it would have forced me to leave the country. I can only hope that another magazine or newpaper or online rumors will read and see the truth about this man. I believe he is the answer to our countries woes.
so hemersam can call him a flip flopper all they want. but they need to remeber the previous clinton administration too truly understand what flipflopping and spinning means.

Nice try, Jonathan. The reason I distrust the media (which I formerly admired greatly) is two-fold: the masively one-sided bias of the Dem primary in favor of Obama (I watched several times when "commentators" openly snickered at the mention of her name), and the continuing bias in his favor (ex: how long did the New Yorker cartoon stay on CNN or MSNBC? Not long, of course. I'm sure this doesn't have to be explained to you. As for the Associated Press, the same goes; they have become nothing less than a liberal clearing house. For over 50 years, I've voted straight Democrat; not this time!

Why isn't the fact that he went to a Muslim school on the Obama website, and why isn't it on the "Fight the Smears" site?

You'd never know Obama went to a muslim school if all you read was the propaganda on his website.

    • Posted By: J.Richter @ 07/15/2008 11:55:20 AM

      Because you CANT read.

The article says he did NOT go to muslim school!

      READ IT AGAIN!

      • Posted By: Johnny at Work @ 07/15/2008 12:02:50 PM

I can read. He went to a Government Sponsored School where Islam is MANDATED. How is that different from a Mosque school?

        • Posted By: summer4077 @ 07/15/2008 12:17:06 PM

Only one class was mandated. Similar to colleges that make students take a women's studies or ethnic studies course.

          • Posted By: Johnny at Work @ 07/15/2008 12:54:01 PM

One class in Islam, every day, including prayer. Preached to influencial youngsters.

That's not quite the same as a voluntary one semester 2 or 3 times a week college class with no prayer, taught to adults with value systems already formed.

And please, name one public US college or University that mandates religious study.

            • Posted By: boulevardofdef @ 07/15/2008 2:35:20 PM

Public schools in Indonesia mandated religious instruction. It was given based on the religion of the student. In Obama's case, the instruction was in Christianity. The principal of Obama's school says this. The people who say otherwise are -- let's see -- nobody who knows anything about the situation whatsoever.

I hesitate to even take part in this unnecessary intellectual exercise, but what if Obama had had Muslim courses, which he didn't? If he wasn't raised a Muslim, why would you care? I bet you received instruction on evolution in school and yet don't believe in evolution.

        • Posted By: J.Richter @ 07/15/2008 12:23:06 PM

So the catholic schools in the country who also obey the mandates are mosques. Enuff said.

          • Posted By: Johnny at Work @ 07/15/2008 12:56:56 PM

            Your conclusion, not mine.

Obama has been quoted calling the Islam prayer "The Prettiest sound on earth". Why does he have no fond memory of Catholic or Christian prayer. Kind of tells you where his heart is, now doesn't it?

            • Posted By: J.Richter @ 07/15/2008 1:18:25 PM

You just pick and make up comments that suits your mentality. There are still more and real issues than this and McCain and Obama and those who really want to create a better country are discussing and reviewing this right now.

I do not believe that he is a Muslim. But the problem with this cartoon is not the implication he is; but it's inherent racism. Islam is a religion of peace and should not be defined by the lunatics who commit unthinkable acts that are strictly forbidden in Islam. Almost 1% of America's population is Muslim, and although that is a small number, American Muslims are good citizens who pay their taxes, care about the their country and carry out their civic duties. The real problem with this cartoon it's racist portrayal of over one billion people in the world.

      Dear Proud

Look at history, every extremist will use their family religion as a reason to harm what they are afraid of. Look at US history and the KKK, Christian terrorist. History will show you many people doing violience in the name of the Allah, The Lord.

  • Posted By: summer4077 @ 07/15/2008 9:12:25 AM

Did anyone even read this article? First of all, yes, Obama does have a HUGE family on his father's side, in Africa. He is close to only 2 of his sisters. I don't think a person's family that they're not even close to should have any bearing on that person. I have a bunch of unsavory characters in my family, as I'm sure most people do, that I met only once 15 years ago and never talk to. Does that mean my character should be judged by them? Of course not. Not to mention, even if Obama WERE close with his African family--so what? Because they're African they're evil? Because they're Muslim they're evil? Hate to break it to all of you ethnocentric, bigoted, racist posters on here--but Islam is one of the biggest religions in the world. Does that make millions of people all evil? Hitler claimed to be a Christian--does that make all Christians evil? What about the Inquisition, in the name of Christianity?
There will always be nutjobs, in every race, religion, ethnicity, gender, etc. You can't vilify an entire demographic simply because of a few crazies. If that were true...hello, look at the Phelps clan right here in America. Look at the Branch Davidians. Look at the Mormon child rapists and Scientology. All of those 'religions' are a site more terrifying than Islam. There are bad people who are Muslim, but there are so many good people that you could meet if you would only allow yourself to stop the blinding hatred of all things that aren't of your WASPish ways.

    • Posted By: 4carol @ 07/15/2008 9:51:37 AM

      Just might be a tad careful in your name calling;
there are some WASP's, like myself, who totally agree with you!! See, we're not all the same either!!!!!!!!!

      • Posted By: summer4077 @ 07/15/2008 2:23:27 PM

Lol, I'm a WASP, too. Just trying to get my point across... :o)

I read these responses (like those from changospirit and holyroller) and I'm so disheartened by the petty, mean-spirited, uninformed comments made here. I so hoped that this election might be about issues, and that 8 years of ignorance and meanness that is the current White House would make people think a little bit. Chango and Holy sure make me wonder though, so I offer this plea: People, this is a really important election year. Use your brains, learn about the economy, the environment, the international risks and opportunities, and make decisions based on actual information, not some superficial fact or lie, and make yourselves bigger and better this year. Comments like "holding his little hand" are mean and have no place in intelligent discourse.

Which of you was offered cushy six figure salaries to practice law on Wall Street? Which of you turned down the money to go work with the poor? What? None of you? Ranters like you are always mostly mad about your own inadequacies.

The New Yorker knew exactly what they were doing. I'm confident that they, too, are well aware of the power of images and this cover blurred the lines between racism and satire. If the New Yorker wants to even out the playing field, why not a cover showing flip-flopper Joe Lieberman in a military tank waving the Israel flag while plowing down the American flag. Let's discuss THAT cover.

    • Posted By: boulevardofdef @ 07/15/2008 2:14:10 PM

Yes, the left-leaning New Yorker, a magazine published by and targeted at liberal urban sophisticates, was certainly exercising its crazy racist tendencies here.
