Bush and the Beijing Games

Words I thought I'd never write: I'm with the president--at least as far as his decision to attend the Olympic Opening Ceremonies.

Where has the respect for the President of the United States gone?? I don't care if you like him or hate him, agree or disagree with him. American's have become way to comfortable mocking, belittling, and hating on the President. He is our leader, like it or not, and should be treated with respect.

Here's to hoping those of you who mock Presidents have a job in the limelight someday and feel what it's like... You people just don't realize how arrogant and treasonous you sound.

You're right. We should just go ahead and make George Bush king. Asking him to turnover his duties next January 20 would be downright treasonous.

Whewwww, the whole point of my post flew right over your kindergarten mind. Read it a few more times and see if you can comprehend. It's not about Bush or Washington or Clinton or Jefferson. It's about respecting the person in the oval office instead of pretending to be anywhere near capable of what they do every day.

Policticians and drugs should be banned in these sports events, only athelets are allowed!

Pls clean your own bloody record with Human rights before criticizing other people, my pale friend. Change the criminal occupation of north america and return it to its real owner -- American Indians!

Your column is so far left and one sided it disgusts me!!!

    • Posted By: Vernondelray @ 07/17/2008 2:44:21 PM

And your ignorance, nicolo, saddens me.

      • Posted By: nicolo @ 07/17/2008 2:49:36 PM

ignorance is thinking the president makes all of the decisions by himself without the Democratic run congress

        • Posted By: Yuseff @ 07/18/2008 2:22:54 PM

Yes, I forgot about the six years of Republican run congress.

        • Posted By: sjbrock80 @ 07/17/2008 6:41:10 PM

Finally!!! Someone who actually understands how our nation works!

half a year ago I really hope that countries in the world would be glad to celebrate Beijing Olympics, but now I don't care any more. True friends would have accept our invitation long time ago; the others, is just toying Chinese people's feelings and think that China could be bullied as in the past. I am sad; I am tired.

Mark Starr: although you strive brilliantly and painfully making your points, you missed the great game of 1984 in South Korea which was run by brutal military dictators. As a matter of fact, in May 1980, hundreds of civilians and students were massacred by soldiers in the south-western city of Kwangju after rising up against military rule. Had US and peace-, democracy-lovers ever considered boycotting the game? Did I smell some filthy hypocrisy here? Or as President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously said: ???Somoza may be a son of a ***, but he???s our son of a ***!???

Considering the Chinese treatment of the Tibetans, and their selling of the internal organs of the Falun Gong, I am surprised any head of state would attend. Of course, the Chinese are going to make us all rich with their cheap labor and high quality products shipped halfway around the world with cheap oil.

  • Posted By: Greytguy @ 07/17/2008 2:04:23 PM

By attending, Bush is actually setting a precedent. No American President has ever before attended the opening ceremonies outside of the US.

    • Posted By: chevypanel46 @ 07/17/2008 4:11:17 PM

That's not at all surprising considering that GWB has probably set more precedents, from criminal to downright stupid, than any president in history.

Bush going to Beijing for the opening ceremony is utterly ridiculous. Is he an athlete? No. Does he stand for Olympic ideals? No. Is it a fact that wherever he goes-- even to the mall-- it a HUGE logistical nightmare, and will only pull focus from the host country and the participants (the athletes), who worked so hard to be there.

The sad truth is he's only going because of his ego. Either that, or he probably thought there was an award for "The Biggest Moron of the Decade" and he had a good shot at taking home the gold.

Mr. President: don't go to the Olympics. This is not about your ego, and no one wants you there, anyway.

    • Posted By: chevypanel46 @ 07/17/2008 3:57:05 PM

Eloquently stated, RJG, and I thought the part addressing him as "Mr. President" was a real hoot!

  • Posted By: chevypanel46 @ 07/17/2008 3:47:54 PM

Mr. Starr makes a number of points to validate his position here, but he completely ignores the most glaring and obvious truth: George Bush, with great consistency, continues to dishonor, disgrace, and embarrass the United States every time he opens his mouth or appears in public. No matter the topic or the venue, he will undoubtedly continue to push the envelope of buffoonery with his ignorant Bubba-speak and air-headed frat boy antics.

His presence at the Olympic Opening Ceremonies or any other public venue is an insult to the host country and to the one he purports to represent.

Stay home, George! And will somebody please, please, PLEASE keep this guy away from microphones for the next six months.

Nothing is going to change in china unless we put social and ecomic pressure on China.

Trust me, if anyone can screw up and cause an international incident in China it will be BUSH!

    Stay tuned!

Actually, by going Bush is setting a precedent. No American President has ever before attended the opening ceremonies of the Games outside of the US.

  • Posted By: Oldgal @ 07/17/2008 1:20:27 PM

Bravo. Well said. After all, it's supposed to be about the athletes. They are the ones who lose the most when a country decides not to attend an Olympics for political reasons. And, by the way, what is our current financial debt to China, not that money should enter in to it....?
