Oddly, I've never noticed this practice of wearing one's pants so that they are hanging off your behind in previous decades. I thought it was a fairly new fad, one that stems from when a person is arrested and has to surrender their belts and shoelaces, etc. In any event, it certainly is not a very attractive mode of dress.

You know... People dont understand..... Are we going to tell hippies to take showers??? Or skaters to stop wearing their sneakers 2 sizes to big? Come on this is ridiculous, How are you or anyone going to tell me how to dress? You cant. You dont pay for my clothes, do you want to go shopping with me and pay for my ***? NO so Im going to continue to wear what I want when I want. Its not just blacks that wear baggy, saggin jeans, white kids are too. Ibet they wont get harrased like the black and spanish kids are they????? We'll see. Michigan has the 3rd highest crime rate and this is what that stupi chief of police can come up with?? He needs to be fired

I hope the police chief has the intestinal fortitude to continue his policy. Many don't realize or believe that it is disrespectful to the elderly and others to show your hind parts or undergarments. The ACLU needs to find something better to do than uphold wrong doing by promoting it as a civil rights violation.

I would be truly astounded if the City (not just the Chief of Police) can afford to continue this for very long. The legal 'grey area' is far too large on this issue and most tickets will be disputed...costing the City time and money. I see sagging drawers all the time, not all are a fashion statement...many are simply because men aren't wearing belts or suspenders. Has the Chief established a specific criteria for issuing such a violation? Is it even possible to establish such a criteria without profiling?

Personally, I have seen teenage boys walking around with with their belts below their butt-cheeks, walking as carefully as possible so as not to have their pants fall down to their ankles. It looks retarded BUT I have gone out in public wearing my boyfriends boxer shorts as shorts which seems to be totally acceptable. That being said, maybe we should stop worrying about "saggers" and concentrate more on stronger laws against, for example perverts, molesters, flashers and rapists. If these kids want to look stupid, let them be.

OUr local school district hated it so much they started a new dress code that now all students must adhere too.

  • Posted By: kkeziah @ 07/18/2008 2:10:26 PM

I think that this is a great law and would like to see it catch on in other places. I am tired of seeing guys running around in pants that are so big on them that they have to hold them up to walk. I have seen pants fastened so low that the belt is actually around their thighs. If a woman were to wear her pants like that we would be arrested for indecent exposure or called slut or whore.

This is just another way to get more black young men in the system so it can screw up their lives and take away their rights, like voting. In a city that is in the state that it is in should have better things to worry about then the color of someones underwear. In a country where I can stand infront of city hall and preach hate and get protected by police (KKK and Skin Head Marches), I have to worry about going to jail, getting illegally searched, horassed and getting fined if I leave my belt at home. Things like this and the people who agree with it is the reason the country is in the state it is in. If people spent more time making sure their lives and children were in order, you'll see you don't have time to worry about what some kid is doing. And BTW, I can go and turn on any tv or pick up any mag and see more flesh then I wish to see. Arrest them too. Also old people smell funny and that offends me so arrest them.

I don't like the style, but I also don't like government telling me what I can and cannot wear. What will be next, on the list?

    • Posted By: tiredofidiots @ 07/18/2008 2:09:14 PM

Yet nobody comments on the fact that they tell us to wear seat belts or risk a ticket. Where is my freedom of choice with that? At least when I am not wearing my seat belt, I am not offending anybody.

  • Posted By: jmaalis @ 07/18/2008 1:31:21 PM

I WANT TO run around with no shirt on but I cant because I am female and we live in a place that does not allow those kinds of freedom.

    • Posted By: Rickster68 @ 07/18/2008 1:35:19 PM

Feel free, darlin', we won't stop ya....lol

God Bless America!!! (As long as possible...)

  • Posted By: hmariegaff @ 07/18/2008 1:30:33 PM

I read this story and think it's ridiculous. You should not be able to arrest someone for their pants sagging. I think the people who wear these pants look a little silly but still it's a free country and you have the right to wear what you want. Pretty soon you won't be able to think on your own without getting permission from the government or their officials. Also, the cops should be looking for real criminals like child molesters, drug dealers, murders', and other bad people.

    • Posted By: bbmj @ 07/18/2008 2:07:04 PM

your right...people should be able to dress any way they want...here that girls...tops are now optional

  • Posted By: jmaalis @ 07/18/2008 2:06:58 PM

I still think the guy at the begining of this discussion had the best solution- if pall people over 50 did that for just a week or two, no young people would want to be caught dead wearing their pant that way!

  • Posted By: ltcastro @ 07/18/2008 1:41:30 PM

Revealing one's underwear or butt crack in public is offensive. I have four children and teach them about appropriate behavior. Sagginf pant is yet another symptom of in-your-face social deviance. It is in the same category, and I am sure closely correlated, with other dangerous and destructive social deviance such as gang association, cursing, drug use, crime, violence, low educational levels, and low self esteem. If the vast number of social deviants want RESPECT, they should do good things and represent their cultural, gender, or any other characteristic to which they commonly classify themselves with high morality and behaviors. ALL beings develop expectations and normality based upon the changing landscape of social behaviors and the environment. If beings, especially humans, continuously experience a bite when approaching a bees nest, they will fear all bees; it is conditioning. So, when a cetain race CONTINUES to use a derogatory racial slur in music, characterise themselves in a certain manner, statistically represent certain lifestyles and behaviors, it is extraordinarily difficult for the general population who experience those things in many forms of media and personal experience to NOT form an opinion and set of EXPECTATIONS.

Amen & Hah-Lee-Loo-Ya & all that...Thank you, Professor..I feel much more enlightened now...I'd almost forgotten all that stuff from Sociology Class ... Maybe I should START saggin', to become one of the "norms" of this rapidly declining country... I'd hate to feel left out & uninformed lol -- nice way of explaining it, although most people out there will need a dictionary to decifer what you wrote, unfortunately...too many big words and lots of syllables isn't what this country needs; gotta use small words & grunts to get through to most of today's youth, which is a shame, but THAT"S how it is where I come from...

  • Posted By: Bill_Hopkins @ 07/18/2008 1:41:08 PM

Sagging does serve a purpose. When viewed from the rear, it explains the reference to these kids as the "Y" generation.

    • Posted By: tiredofidiots @ 07/18/2008 2:05:02 PM

HA HA HA. Now that is funny!

    • Posted By: pfwpearl @ 07/18/2008 2:04:51 PM

Congrats! You have managed to insult youth culture, Blacks and Gays all in one post. Don't you feel special. How about you go join the Taliban and then you can tell everyone under threat of death how to dress. BTW - I am a white middle-aged female conservatively dressed.

    • Posted By: jalvarado04 @ 07/18/2008 2:03:12 PM

While I am not a fan of sagging and think it does look ridiculous, the law is still a violation of their freedom of speech or the current law in Flint.

BTW, please learn how to write or at least use spell-check if you are going to make such outlandish comments.

Just a piece of advice buddy.

    • Posted By: jmaalis @ 07/18/2008 1:52:44 PM

      You're real smart.

  • Posted By: laurieb @ 07/18/2008 2:03:52 PM

Bravo! I am so glad someone is doing something positive about this "sagging" problem. It is offensive, and what ever "saggers" have been told, very unattractive and a turn-off! Saggers, Have a little respect for others and mostly yourselves! Dress to earn the respect you want and possibly deserve.

Here we go another FREEDOM taken away in a FREEDOM Country...Does anyone see what is going on? Little by little our FREEDOM is taken away...the same FREEDOM that we are trying to fight for overseas' Does that make sense? People stop trying to put your views on Clothes, Marriage, religion, music and speech into others ....We don't all think the same so why should we all act the same/..

    • Posted By: bbmj @ 07/18/2008 2:03:36 PM

because its CIVIL, you belong to a SOCIETY that finds your ass offensive

  • Posted By: afryover @ 07/18/2008 2:03:34 PM

When I go to a business or see a doctor, dentist , lawyer or some other professional , nothing will make me turn around faster to leave than bad sagging pants, multiple piecings, spiked hair etc. It's okay maybe through the college years but then it's time to be an adult. As adults society expects SOME kind of conformity and dressing for the occassion/profession warrants it. PS There's no sex appeal in dressing in clothes several times bigger than what you are. Secondly, people who are successful financially (except people in the hip hop music business) dress more becomingly. Dress for sucess.

Sagging (with top of boxers showing) is more a commentary on the wearer than an offense to the person viewing it. Some woman wear pants that are too tight or blouses that are sheer or low-cut, but there aren't any laws regarding that. I grew up in a community near Flint, and believe me, there are far bigger problems in that city for law enforcement to deal with than tasteless fashion trends.

  • Posted By: rhymeinterupter @ 07/18/2008 2:01:14 PM

Sagging is stupid, but throwing someone in jail for it is absurd. If they are trying to tie sagging to someone who is criminal is also absurd. How is someone going to flee the place of a crime with his pants half way down his butt. It's not happening. Sagging is just an urban style that has outlasted it's time back in the early to mid 90's.

Hoooray for the Flint, MI Police Dept. and their corageous Chief! As a Black man, I HATE seeing these young men with their @sses hanging out in public; it's downright ghetto and 'hoodish. It makes us all look ignorant, unkempt and like thugs. I only wish they will adopt similar laws here in New York City where this 'fad' and the young men who subscribe to it are totally out of control. They are very rude, loud, disrespectful and will get violent if you say anything to them about it. I have a 24 year old Son who I warned against this. I told him I'd break his fcucking back if I EVER caught him in the street (or anywhere else for that matter) with his pants falling off his @ss. It is said that this "fad" evolved from the jail house where the inmates are not allowed to have belts and the young boys now do it because they want to give the impression that they are 'jail toughened'. Little do they realize that only idiots and @ssholes go to jail to begin with and they aspire to give this impression to others? Not a good look. I say arrest them on a second offense and JAIL them (along with a hefty fine) on the second offense. Once their little @sses come from prison, I bet they will wear their clothes properly after that!

You seem very adamant about this issue. I wonder if Jah would take the same approach. This is just a style. It only makes those look bad that dress this way. Be careful of your all inclusive aspect of African American culture. Someone is always trying to characterize us a being indecent wheteher it be our kinky hair, complexion, etc. We are more than how we dress. It has nothing to do with incarceration anymore. I think we should focus more energy on the subconcious desire to expose our physical sexual assets to the public in such a disorderly manner.

Ther state of society is the men 'aspire' to appear be just like criminals and gansters and the women like stippers (thats were g-strings originated)--and i am sick of seeing womens 'whale tails' as well)
