I live in what they call the dirty south,,,And did they ever hit the nail on the head with that one!! Seems like everywhere you go you see some dumbasses' wanting to look as rediculous as possible with sagging..What they dont know is' that the fad started in prisons by the homosexuals!, thats how other inmates could identify who was for booty sale, ha ha ! So if ya think its cool to look like a jailhouse punk/queer be my guest..Send out that outward projection of you being a *** gangbanger. What a great acompishment of lifes work you've created for yourself!! I SAY HIP-HOP HURRAY FOR ALL THE COPS FOR STOPPING THE WORST FASHION STATEMENT EVER!!! I mean for real already it really sucks to be in the BANK- or walmart or a fast food joint and stand behind someone that has their ass haging out.....it says alot about your personal ethics'' Not to mention it does great for an appetite supressent!! all you saggers suck...GOOD WORK COPS!!!!!

What a waste of time. If they're not bothering anybody then why bother them? If someone wants to dress a certain way then let them. Freedom of expression right? Are we gonna start arresting cross-dressers too? How about school girls who wear their skirts too short? Or maybe some of those Gothic kids with the black nail polish and the dark eyliner. Search them, they scare me. Half of the people who live on Manhattan island would have criminal records if the way they dressed were made criminal. All im saying is that rules should apply to all groups of people. Not just one group.

A balance MUST be mantained in social, otherwise we have anarchy!

  • Posted By: susandemos @ 07/18/2008 2:00:11 PM

Are you serious! I hate the look but dont the police have ANYTHING better to do! My ex-husband is running around the city of Flint, with warrants out against him for non-payment of child support, and the Friend of the Court can't get the Flint police to pick him up! Come on, lets crackdown on the important things rather than bad fashion statements

I understand fads and all,but running around showing everybody you'r a__ and you underwear is pushing things to far. It's certainly not classy.Usualy it's just those that are trying to emulate "gang"fashions or wanna be hip-hoppers.Must be a lot out there that crave attention to themselves

    • Posted By: tiredofidiots @ 07/18/2008 1:57:27 PM

WHAT???? That can't possibly be English!!! You're a sagger aren't you. This isn't about race, so "DA REV" should stay in whatever hole he has crawled into. Talk about racist!! Between da rev and jj, they keep racism alive and well.

I hope the police chief has the intestinal fortitiude to continue upholding the law. Most people don't want to be offended by seeing others hind parts nor their undergarments everytime you enter or leave a business establishment. It is down right disrespectful to the elderly and others in society who have any form of decency. Give the police chief a raise and tell the ACLU to find another cause.

  • Posted By: breezechic @ 07/18/2008 1:56:53 PM

yay! I am thankful that I won't be faced with a butt crack or a pair of underwear whenever I go into that town. I am thankful that someone stood up for those rights! Now if only we can make slutty clingy clothes illegal. I hate being accosted with breasts wide open for all to see.

  • Posted By: andrade-santiago @ 07/18/2008 1:56:31 PM

No matter what is said by whom, making it sound alright for our children to wear clothing that way is wrong. Groups of individuals have been attempting to find a way to eliminate this form of dress for years. Those individuals that speak uncaring about it are not mentoring nor representing these younger individuals. What type of life, job will they have? You tell us. I commend anyone that is trying to instill "the right form of dress" respect for the future in the younger individuals.

This is hilarious. They are accusing the Police Chief of taking the law into his own hands!! He IS the Police Chief. That is his job, duh. So, they are accusing him of doing his job and implying that doing one's job is a bad thing somehow. I agree, let them go show their ass off in prison and be someone's prison bitch. They'll either like it and keep on doing it, or not and stop. Maybe those in public would stop, unless they were queer and liked that stuff.

I live just outside of Flint. I applaud this. I am a Criminal Justice maorand I know where "sagging" came from. It was first used in the prison system to let other prisoners that you were available for male on male sex. I bet if some of these kids seen this they would change their minds real quick. I seriously don't think they should face jail time but a heavy fine would do the trick.
If you seen a man walking up towards your children playing outside in his underwear, you would be calling the cops so fast. You would also want him labeled as a sex offender. What is the difference? A sagger isn't really wearing his pants he just wants to show his underwear. Or maybe he is telling others he is available!!

Criminal Justice major, REALLY?? You're just makin that up, aren't you?

      • Posted By: maltz1881 @ 07/18/2008 1:56:10 PM

Why would I make that up? I am dead serious. In fact I am #1 in my class!

  • Posted By: happy111 @ 07/18/2008 1:55:34 PM

I hate sagging! The other day, a man at a convenience store had his pants below his underwear and my 10 year old daughter saw it. She looked at me and turned red. That's when I decided it's basically indecent exposure. I don't want my kids seeing some moronic stranger's underwear! Gross. If some pervert walked by and pulled his pants down and showed his underwear in the middle of a store, he'd get arrested. People shouldn't be able to do it just because they think it looks good. That's retarded.

Sagging (with the top of boxers showing) is more of a commentary on the wearer than an offense to the person viewing it. It may also be offensive to see a woman in pants that are too tight or a blouse that is sheer or low-cut, but there are not any laws regarding those 'fashions'. I grew up in a community near Flint and believe me, there are much bigger problems in that city for law enforcemet to deal with than tasteless
    trends in fashion.

  • Posted By: neptuno56 @ 07/18/2008 1:42:41 PM

Aren't there more important issues to deal with around America, like oh I don't know, the price of gas, failing banks, crappy economy!!!! Get a clue!!!

    • Posted By: ltcastro @ 07/18/2008 1:45:08 PM

Social deviance is a symptom of our overwhelming problems in this country. So what is really more important?

      • Posted By: jmaalis @ 07/18/2008 1:51:33 PM

What country is it that you are living in, Sir? It sound awful.

        • Posted By: ltcastro @ 07/18/2008 1:55:18 PM

The USA. If art imitates life (sociaety), we are in deep trouble.

Hoooray for the Flint, MI Police Dept. and their Chief for outlawing this ridiculous and disrespectful fashion "fad". As a mature Black man, it pains me to see our youth running around the streets with their pants falling off their @sses. They actually think they look cool, but in reality, they look like uneducated idiots and thugs. And yes, it will give way to Police agencies to stop and frisk them for probable cause. Most likely they will catch the offenders dirty. I say lock 'em up if they're caught and I wait for the day for New York City to adopt similar if not harsher penalties for the offenders because they are definitely out of control here. All across America minority youth is an increasingly out of control problem and a lot of it has to do with that cRAP ' music' they love to listen to and their wish to live a cRAPPERS lifestyle.

  • Posted By: mayaslash @ 07/18/2008 1:54:29 PM

I grew up in a communist society where men who listened to Beatles, wore charleston-type pants and long hair were arrested by the police and then thrown in prisons and concentration campts. So "wonderful" to find out that some parts of the so called democratic world haven't progressed any further than that!

  • Posted By: laurelbarnes @ 07/18/2008 1:53:52 PM

I find looking at strange mens underwear offensive. I don't like having to advert my eyes when going to the grocery store and lets face it we want this to be a law because there are a lot of hoodlems that should be search and this give cause to. More POWER to Flint!

  • Posted By: foxxxy22185 @ 07/18/2008 1:53:01 PM

What a waste of time .Maybe we should start searching and arresting school girls that wear their skirts too short. That offensive. Maybe they're prostitutes. Or maybe some of those Gothic kids with the black nail polish and the dark eyliner. They scare me. Search them for a gun. How about those cross-dressers?Thats not normal. I dont want my kids to get confused. Doesnt that just sound ignorant? They shouldnt target just one group of people. Maybe the Flint police department can lead the way to a national uniform so that no one has to get harrased by the police because of what they have on.

As criminals at all levels, from running red lights to violence, continues to rise we and our children lose. Societies will respond by increase more restrictive laws and diminsihing our freedoms by installing cameras and enacting more restrictive laws. So, if social deviance continues to increase, our rights will correspndingly decrease. Over time, our constitution will be completely rewritten and we will live in an Orwellian society.

I used to live in that area and have since relocated to the South. I find the style quite disgusting personally, however it should not be illegal. The police in that area, as well as Saginaw, etc. have abused the rights of young black males historically. Illegal search and seizure is routine for African American males, this is just another way to afford police the opportunity to violate the rights of these individuals. Women have dressed indecently for quite sometime, why haven't they been imposed upon. I'm not against the measure, however it should have been voted upon by the community, and not enacted by a sheriff trying to win support.

It's funny to me how many people think that by "sagging" one is showing off his butt, that is NOT the case. Showing priviate parts in public is a crime...this is a fashion statement rather you like it or not. Now just so we are clear, I personally do not sag...however I don't have a problem with the way someone else decides to dress, there are bigger issues at hand than to worry about the way one decides to dress. For that matter, I think the Goth look is more crazy...black fingernail polish, big holes in the earlobes, and spiked hair...that scares me more than someone simply wearing their pants below the waistline.....let's face it America....anything that has to do with urban culture "you" have a problem with. I really hate to play the race card but I find it to be very true. Let's move on to "real" crimes and public services Chief and leave your "personal" beliefs at home where they belong!
