It's funny to me how many people think that by "sagging" one is showing off his butt, that is NOT the case. Showing priviate parts in public is a crime...this is a fashion statement rather you like it or not. Now just so we are clear, I personally do not sag...however I don't have a problem with the way someone else decides to dress, there are bigger issues at hand than to worry about the way one decides to dress. For that matter, I think the Goth look is more crazy...black fingernail polish, big holes in the earlobes, and spiked hair...that scares me more than someone simply wearing their pants below the waistline.....let's face it America....anything that has to do with urban culture "you" have a problem with. I really hate to play the race card but I find it to be very true. Let's move on to "real" crimes and public services Chief and leave your "personal" beliefs at home where they belong!

I'm sorry, but I am not among those who think 'anything goes' in public. If men want to belt their pants beneath their buttocks, go ahead, but do not subject me to looking at your underware becasue you do not wear a shirt that covers it up. Why is forcing me to look at that any different than some guy standing on a street corner waiting for a woman to pass by and then 'dropping trou' to expose his underware? Anyone who did that would be hauled in for flashing or indecent exposure.

it shows they have no class. He is trying to instill some self respect in one's appearance.
Live to please your self, dress to please others. Is it asking too much to pull your damn pants up!
I don't want to see your undies under any circumstance.

    • Posted By: mayaslash @ 07/18/2008 1:49:01 PM

If lack of class was a crime, more than half the world's population would be in jail.

  • Posted By: someoldguy @ 07/18/2008 1:48:15 PM

Since we are throwing out ridiculous laws and opinions...speaking of sagging....I think it should be illegal for anyone over 40 to wear a bathing suit. Because, you know....I think wrinkles and SAGGING body parts are disgusting. I don't 'sag', personally I think it looks stupid...but making a law banning it is completely unconstitutional...this wont last long.

I live in Houston Texas and I'm sick and tired of seeing boys and mens rear ends and underwear. Whenever I see someone sagging I tell them that it started in prison and it means your available and they don't care. I think its disgusting and shows that people would rather emulate something low class, criminal looking than want to look decent. I don't allow my daughter to date saggers or my son to be one or hang out with them. It's indecent exposure.....

  • Posted By: hunterbear @ 07/18/2008 1:23:54 PM

It's amazing how people have changed the origins of how 'sagging' began. It began in England when the gay inmates wanted to advertise that they were gay...it had nothing to do with not being allowed belts.

I think it's great that the police chief is standing up to these people...it's disgusting to see butts when out in public. I had a friend who actually tripped over the crotch of his pants cuz they were hanging so low and he broke his collar bone. How cool is that?

    • Posted By: dbwhoaz @ 07/18/2008 1:47:39 PM

Oh hunterbear, I'd pay big money to get to watch that happen, watch one of these prideless twits trip over the hanging pants! I'd be laughing so hard I'm sure I'd wet MY pants!!! LMAO!!!

I grew up in a communist society where men who listened to Beatles, wore charleston-type pants and long hair were arrested by the police and then thrown in prisons and concentration campts. So "wonderful" to find out that some parts of the so called democratic world haven't progressed any further than that!

  • Posted By: Normal One @ 07/18/2008 1:36:37 PM

Wonder why Flint is the third most dangerous city in America? Flat-out because of the "type" that "sags". Enough said..

    • Posted By: shella98 @ 07/18/2008 1:38:39 PM

That is what is called an assumption!

      • Posted By: Rickster68 @ 07/18/2008 1:47:19 PM

No, I lived there when I was a kid, and moved back for a while as an adult, and saw how bad Flint had gotten...It almost made me cry and angry at the same time...The "types" that Normal One was talkin' about isn't an "assumption" -- he nailed it. I once heard a racial analogy of what "Flint" stood for -- "Finally Living in N-Town" -- I am not racist, and that comment disgusted me, but at the same time, it was pretty much true..Flint also became known as "Northern Detroit", which has many of the same problems, and coincidentally, many of the same "types"... Just sayin'....

If the police of Flint, Michigan have that much time on their hands, maybe they should arrest some real criminals, like the predatory lenders who have helped turn the local housing market into a joke, or maybe even the folks at Chevy who have refused to build cars with decent fuel standards.

Or maybe they could just stick to enforcing the laws already on the books for things like drug dealing, car theft, braking and entering, you know - real crime that hurts real victims.

Where is Michael Moore when you need him?

Chevy is still in Flint?? Oh is that what you call the Truck and Bus Plant. How many are buying those now? GM pulled out of Flint leaving a true mess in it's wake.

    • Posted By: Bill_Hopkins @ 07/18/2008 1:27:04 PM

Although I share your opinion of predatory lenders, it is our elected representatives who enacted the laws that allowed these people to do what they did. Let's start campaigning for legislative reform and regulatory oversight to curb the appetites of these financial raptors.

American auto manufacturers built what we wanted to buy. If you don't believe that, look at what has happened to the production of SUV and light truck models as a result of recent market trends.

Just more of the low lifte types. They could never hope of getting a decent job with this look. It just goes along with the foul language, ghetto look and criminal gangster rap music. Where I work, they would not even be allowed to clean toilets. The best they could ever hope for is digging ditches. People wonder where their futures are headed.

Peter I strongly disagree with the statement that you are trying to make. It is very hasty and judgemental! I have an employee who has a very bright future i.e. graduated in the top 5% of his class and is on his way to college right as we type. He may be your boss one day!

Peter, are you at your job right now? Then, get to work!!!!!

  • Posted By: jim3333 @ 07/18/2008 1:43:58 PM

"Sagging" looks stupid but so do capri pants.People should not be arrested for them or subject to search. The issue is about using the law to single out people based on dress. That's not right. If it was, there should be thousands of people with their capri pants and ugliest shoes in the jails.

Building on the the comment of maltz1881
I am originally from Detroit...if anyone is interested- -do some research on Y.B.I. or Young Boys Incorporated... you will learn why so many "oldschoolers" are offended by much of the style, popular culture, music, slang, etc. that has become the norm over the past 20 to 25 years- -because it comes from the drug dealing/hustling street culture. "Sagging" has been known as a means of hiding or "crotching" illegal substances in a dealer or runner's pants on the street. Because Flint is a much more crime-ridden city than Detroit- -especially since the economic downturn and plant closings, I do not blame the police for wanting to outlaw this fashion trend. However, there is that tricky little thing called freedom of expression...not sure how this one is going to play out.

this is no fashion statement...it is however an aversion to authority ...The ACLU should be ashamed of itself on so many levels it used to be a good thing and really worked on civil liberties now all they want is their names in the news...too bad for them and us

  • Posted By: largemarge @ 07/18/2008 1:33:17 PM

I hope they plan to do the same for the women that show off their thongs and their butts.

    • Posted By: lbarker2301 @ 07/18/2008 1:42:43 PM

I agree with you on that one

  • Posted By: neptuno56 @ 07/18/2008 1:41:18 PM

I believe there are more important issues to deal with than this...get a clue people..

  • Posted By: Rickster68 @ 07/18/2008 1:40:49 PM

Mannnn, I can't WAIT for the comments from overseas about this article.... Like they don't laugh at us enough as it is... Welcome to the United States of Embarassment
Gotta go now, and put another hole in my belt to make it tighter, before i start saggin'.....I go commando, and THAT wouldn't be pretty...

  • Posted By: jim3333 @ 07/18/2008 1:40:49 PM
