Oh no!! The end is coming!! While I don't like the 'sagging' style, as the mother of 2 teenage boys, it's up to ME to make sure that they are dressed appropriately. Kids want to express themselves, sure, but they also need to be taught RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY. When a child goes outside dressed like that, it is a direct reflection of how he/she was raised.
Yes, girls will hike up their skirts to make them shorter and boys will pull their pants down to make them sag, but if they're brought up right and taught right from wrong, believe me, they'll realize what's really important.
No law in the land should mandate how low a person's jeans can ride. No police department should even THINK they have that kind of authority. While I do understand the chief's point and feel his frustation, more emphasis should be placed on parenting and teaching kids values. Hip-hop is NOT to blame...lack of parenting is.

Well, I have to say I have enjoyed reading through all these logical, succinct, and heartfelt comments about sagging; let's just to try a new approach for a moment, how many votes do you think Obama would get if he took up sagging? Let's hear from Sharpton, Jackson, and Obama.

Me thinks therein lies the answer.............................inappropriate and tasteless is inappropriate and tastless.

I don"t think a mans clothing is the basic fiber of his morals. Try not to sound so good ol' boyishEnter Your Comment

I agree, it is very tasteless. It shows how much they actually care about themselves and their lives in general. Dressing like that will always make you "suspect". Even if you are not, you will always be labeled as long as you dress like that. It's sad they don't get b/c they either don't care or their parents didn't care enough to say hey...pull you pants up and have some respect for yourself!

The idea that "sagging" is a crime is the most idiotic law I have ever heard of. through out history, style of dress has moved to and from showing skin. anybody ovet 50 can remember the 60's MMMM? how short can that skirt go?????? or the 80's my era, how tight are your pants????? give me a break both my boys sag and think it looks great , colors match and no holes anywhere. did it ever occure to the lawmakers that mabybe they should be working on the fact that maybe a real crime might be taking place?? like robbery, murder, rape take your pick.. This is a great example of how the good old boy's decide what is morally right and wrong. read the Bible is sagging mentioned anywhere?????? We are leaving these kids wiht a whole lot of bad world out there. leave them alone................................................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Having raised two wonderful, intelligent sons, the "sagging" ?style? is VERY offensive to me!! I do NOT care to see any person's buttox or underwear in public or anywhere!! Those young guys (all ethnic groups), look like a bunch of "DUFISes" or "Dumb." They need to develop some "class" and self-respect. They would NOT be hired for any ???decent??? type job because they honestly LOOK like "Thugs" and "Hoodlums." It???s SAD to think what kind of parents these young people must have. I am very SAD for their futures ??? they need to be given a ???positive??? direction.

This beyond a "fad" already and I'm tired of it. It was cute 20 years ago but it's old and busted already. Fads come and go. Isn't it time to get a new style already? Or is todays youth, that's already taken MY generations music (hip-hop, oh, and I'm 50 btw) and recycled it since they have no original music to make themselves? Get a new style already, the sagging look is a tired look. Try to be original for once.

For those of you that don't know sagging did start in prisons because they don't allow belts. As for being arrested or fined for sagging, it's ridiculous. Imagine how the crime rate will climb while police waste time and money on this law. I think there are many more important issues needing to be dealt with before sagging. Flint residents should be outraged that their tax dollars are paying this man to "deal with this problem". If stopping sagging solved problems such as the economy, the lacking educational system, domestic violence, and child abuse I would support it. Imagine if men pulled up their pants and solved all of America's problems. Wouldn't that be something.

If sagging should be illegal than so should women's immodest dress, which glorifys a sexual pervert culture thats explains why this culture is so sexualized and lost its morals. There used to be modest dress until people fiquired out how to make money in a sexual culture. If it should be crime for men than it should apply to women too.

I think everyone should be allowed to walk around completely naked. That way we could all see what everyone has got. We should also carry around air sickness bags, because most of us would be throwing up. Let us all go back to Adam and Eve. It would sure save a lot of money on clothes.

LOL my mom says that! she says clothes are unnatural. really cracks me up

Very good for Mr. Dicks, I think this kind of dressing is disgusting. I have been living in the USA over 30 yrs, and where I went to grade school and high school no body (boys) dressed like it. I just hope all around the USA takes this as an sample. Very good for the state of Michigan. Very good criminal offense law for Mr. Dicks. keep doing your job.

wear swim suit underneath....or will wearing swim suit get you a ticket also..
It just makes the person who wears jeans like this look butt stupid. Me I am more concerned with the tee shirts I see that say Fu*k Y*u on them and other nasty stuff. I wonder if they wear that stuff around their grandparents etc. I think Flint needs some $$$$$ and this is one way to get some xtra cash... Need a police chief with some Common sense...

to be honest its just another form of profiling. When have you ever seen a business man "sagging"? Only a certain group of people "sag". No man that dresses like that will get a white collar job so you know its mostly the "hood" that they are targeting. Yes there are non-"hood" guys out there that sag but I bet they are not white collar business men so it's profiling...sad but true. Personally I hate the look and any man that walks up to me trying to holler looking like that gets turned down fast, it's not attractive at all. As for the girls that show off their butts with the short shorts..hey...that's their business. It's not cute and in this society you are automatically labeled as with the "sagger". Should this cop bust the women to, absolutely but is it against the law for him to do..most likely it is but it's all about power, nothng we can do. It's sad that they want to lock these folks up for it yet chose to let a child molester go free. Where are our morals as a country?

  • Posted By: TrueGrit @ 07/18/2008 10:59:49 AM

Based of my sense of propriety sagging is unacceptable; but based on my appreciation for Privacy and Free Speech, uncompromisable constitutional principles, what Flint is doing is indefensible. There has to be another way.

    • Posted By: tiredofidiots @ 07/18/2008 1:39:37 PM

Yeah, it's called parenting. Something parents don't do. And, those of us who dress properly when we leave our homes have rights too. Regardless, indecent exposure is illegal.

      • Posted By: knowledge is strength @ 07/18/2008 3:39:29 PM

Tell that to the millions of people that walk our streets everyday. black, white, latino, orientals, native americans... at some point in our lives we all feel offended about something, but too want to go as far as telling another how to dress is outrageous. If we allow that it is only a matter of time before it comes back to bite us. either be tolerant or look away , but to make this an issue is CRAZY.... BIGGER PROBLEMS PEOPLE ... much bigger problems out there. My hour of discussion is over. it is friday night. go out and enjoy your weekend. I AM.

      BS.......:)

Since we are throwing out ridiculous laws and opinions...speaking of sagging....I think it should be illegal for anyone over 40 to wear a bathing suit. Because, you know....I think wrinkles and SAGGING body parts are disgusting. I don't 'sag', personally I think it looks stupid...but making a law banning it is completely unconstitutional...this wont last long.

go back to the beginning of the article, 28 year old ? ? I think it is time to pull up and grow up. The City of Flint is simply trying to get this aging youth to become productive and responsible citizens. Screw that business of "expressing" yourself, do that when you are going through puberty.

        • Posted By: wolfman_83 @ 07/18/2008 3:08:08 PM

That "28 year old kid", at the beginning of the article needs to pull and grow up. The next move should be to get females to cover their ass crack.

A police chief decides to make his own rules and risk violating the freedoms and protections we are entitled to in this country? Who does he think he is, the President...?
