When will Newsweek openly proclaim its support for John McCain? This piece of fluff looks it was written by McCain's PR staff.

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 07/19/2008 10:50:23 AM

Were you born today or something? Newsweak is Obama's biggest fan sheep. 99% of their articles have been in defense of Obama and the first piece of reporting that isn't, well, stating "Obama is god" you can't hear a chain saw over the bahhhhhs from the sheep. Are you blind or something? Maybe you just missed the ads on every article showing a big picture of you know who with a banner statign OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT. Bet you can't find one on McCain.

      • Posted By: summer1216 @ 07/19/2008 12:44:05 PM

Everybody thinks Newsweek is supporting the candidate they don't like. I see comments all the time. Newsweek just reports the news that is interesting.

I don't have to go to Iraq to know I don't want to spend $10billion a month to protect Israel! That's all the Iraq war is about...protecting Israel. What good has come out of the Iraq war for the US? Nothing...0...zip...not one good thing. But Israel has one less enemy and they haven't spent money or lives! We did all for them.

    • Posted By: summer1216 @ 07/19/2008 12:36:17 PM

I agree. The Iraqi war is about oil, and Israel is incidental. I also think the US has a strong stake in helping Israel protect itself, but it wouldn't require that particular war for it to happen.

    • Posted By: jjaffie @ 07/19/2008 12:19:33 PM

you forgot oil, lots & lots of oil gifted to companies in the form of no bid contracts

Americans really like dumb leaders. They get scared everytime they have to listen to one who speaks in words of more than 2 syllables

      What does say about Americans?

Here you go toe tappers, let me just spread your propaganda and innuendo for you so you can take a break from inhaling "neo-con" gas under Rush Limba ba's desk.

The economy has made great progress. Obama supporters are welfare sponges. Democrats are traitors. Republicans are patriots. America is admired around the world. The constitution is for weaklings. Everyone to the left of Dick Cheney is a socialist. We now own Mexico and China. The Saudis beg us for more oil. The millions facing foreclosure are whiners. The largest income inequality since the Great Depression is meaningless. Al-Qaeda has been destroyed. Iran has been weakened. Federal spending over the last 8 years has reduced by a trillion dollars. Scientific facts are a liberal conspiracy. 82% who think the country is on the wrong track drink kool-aid. 66% who disapprove of Bush are communists. Upper-income tax cuts during war make sense. The dollar has never been stronger. NAFTA creates jobs. Only greedy poor people and the media bellyache about skyrocketing gas prices.

After 8 years of the greatest president of all time, Obama will destroy America.

" . . . for many voters, [McCain] has already passed this test."

True, but he never passed it from the point of view of the Navy, which in his 23 years as an officer never gave him a sea command, or command of a combat-ready unit. Why not? Come on, Newsweek, there's a story here. Do some reporting instead of stroking your chin and re-stating the obvious.

Incompetency breeds insecurity. Thus Obama and camp's defensive posture of playing the race card at every scrutiny. America is not ready for a hyphenated (-) American as President. Our heritage is not color or tradition, although often molded by such. Our heritage is the reality of who we are in our generation. Obama does not have enough life experience to pass the "Commander-in-Cheif" test.

Blah blah blah... Let me guess, you thought Bush was ready and you voted for him. Look what happened to this wonderful country where the majority of the population can't make ends meet. There is no way in hell McSame will win this and you know why? Because Americans have learned their lesson. So I suggest you get used to it now so it wouldn't hurt so much in November.

      Incompetency breeds insecurity.

      Sure Did!!

Here???s how John McCain called it:

"But the point is that, one, we will win this conflict. We will win it easily." [MSNBC, 1/22/03]

''It???s clear that the end is very much in sight.'' [ABC, 4/9/03]

Do Republicans still think John McCain was closer to the mark on Iraq?

The other day a Froomkin column and a Frank Rich column that appeared in Sundays NY Times covers a new book by Jane Mayer of *The New Yorker* called *The Dark Side* which details some of the White House chicanery practiced by Cheney, Rummy and Addington in devising legalisms for torture and expanding the power of the executive branch.

Included is the assertion, based on interviews with WH insiders, that 50 or 60 individuals within the CIA knew that two Al Qaeda suspects, soon to be hijackers, were within the US, and that the event of Sept. 11 were "all preventable". It goes on to recount how there was no sense of urgency at the top, including an account of how Atty. General Ascroft rebuffed warnings.

This squares with the accounts by others, including from CIA director George Tenet and terror expert Richard Clarke who tried to get audiences with the president but were rebuffed by Condi Rice. She further told an outright lie, when she averred on national television sometime after 9/11 that "no one could have envisioned" terrorists using jet airliners as missiles. In fact, it was well established that some within government agencies had envisioned exactly that, but were ignored. It was the dunderheads in the cabinet who were too stupid to think of it. (Hey Condi, ever heard of Kamikazes?) Not only that, let's think about this for a second: Let's see, terrorist groups since the sixties have been known to hijack airliners, blow things up in symbolic & terrorist acts, and go on suicide missions. Was it really unimaginable that they would do these things simultaneously after declaring a fatwa on America?

The fact is tht 9/11 was preventable, and it was the fault of the top leadership -- not the guys in the field -- that this happened. Those guys did their jobs well, it was management that hosed it up.

How much has that and the misguided response to it cost America?

Here???s how Barack Obama called the Iraq war:

"I know that even a successful war against Iraq will require a US occupation of undetermined length, at undetermined cost, with undetermined consequences. I know that an invasion of Iraq without a clear rationale and without strong international support will only fan the flames of the Middle East, and encourage the worst, rather than best, impulses of the Arab world, and strengthen the recruitment arm of al-Qaeda.

I am not opposed to all wars. Im opposed to dumb wars."
      Barack Obama Oct. 2, 2002

Thanks Why can't the Bush- McCain idiots get it. They'll only be happy if our country is hated by the rest of the world and our dollar becomes weaker by the day. They are so afraid a black man could step in and truly start to help rebuild this wonderful country and shame them for the wronge they have done to us they can't stand it.

Anyone who claims to still be suspicious that Obama secretly harbors or sympathizes with the extremist views of Rev. Wright after actually listening to Obama's now famous speech was never going to vote for Obama in the first place. All the anti-Obama voters are jumping on the lynch-wagon because they see it as a way to bring Obama down, not because they honestly believe Obama to be an extremist. So let them rant and rave. The polls show their fury is barely even fraying Obama's support at the edges. And in a way, they have actually helped Obama (1) by reminding everyone that Obama is a Christian, not a Muslim and (2) by dispelling any notion that Obama can not stand up to the Republican attack machine.

Not only will he stand up, he will do it with grace, courage and brilliance and I would be honored to call Barack Obama President.

    • Posted By: mrkcswll @ 07/18/2008 7:33:04 PM

Let me see - 20 years with Wright as his spiritual mentor and one speech wipes it all away. How naive can you be.

He is 72, that means he has considerable life experience....

This is just a bunch of faked media narative trying to add drama to the election. Why? So we don't realize that it's over, Obama will win, and that will probably reduce readership because there will be fewer crises and wars.

They want to keep us on the edge of our seats. Net effect: the media covers for McCain and attacks Obama. Totally biased and unprofessional, but they are not in it to inform us, only to make money

    • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 07/18/2008 9:36:58 PM

No...the news media gets more revinue from more crisis and more war and more screw ups and THATS why the US news industry favors Obama! they know who means the BIG BUCKS after the election! Been this way for years! Where you been?

The media who write the articles are a hell of a lot different from the media moguls who OWN the newspapers and broadcast outlets.

If the writers had to make a choice, I'd say they would be leaning toward Obama. It's the only intelligent, thinking person's choice - the Brilliant, SAVVY, political communicator vs. the Aging, Bumbling, Stumbling Old Fart with Trophy Wife.

Is there really even a choice? Duh.

"Ich bin ein Commander" are you serious? If you don't have knowledge of the language, don't try to be witty. It makes you look foolish. There is an ignorance in some circles where some believe the term "Führer" means "Adolf Hitler." It doesn't. Führer simply means leader. "Ich bin der Führer." Get it right!

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 07/19/2008 11:28:18 AM

Considering many Americans seem to have trouble speaking English, their native tongue, let alone any foreign languages, I guess this is about as good as it gets!

  • Posted By: MuseOn @ 07/19/2008 5:45:04 AM

Obama finally making it to Iraq, Israel, Europe.....about time. Maybe this is the new way of the modern man - certainly very typically men, that go for jobs far beyond their experience and expertise, while a woman would only apply for the job, when thoroughly prepared for it. We see it in everyday work life, and we´ve seen it in the primaries; men jump at things more easily, and seemingly with more self-esteem, while women gather more information and skills first.
Sometimes it works out for you, sometimes it don´t.
Sometimes you´re a great addition to the company, sometimes not, as the "pretend to know"/fake becomes obvious.

It can work in an everyday job......but when applying for the job as President of the United States of America?

Obama now rushing to Europe - after being leader of a committee for European affairs for over a year, without conducting a single meeting, nor having gone to Europe - and talking bravely and confidently about the Iraq war, without military experience, and without having been on site and talked to the generals...

This sounds to me like someone who has applied for an important, big job, saying he can do this and that in his job interview - and is now hurrying over to some evening class to catch up, and learn quick as in the hot place, so he at least know which words to use when on the board meeting.

A PR stunt. But - if really, really interested in a job career - wouldn´t you just take the classes and get the experience first, if for nothing else - just out of sheer interest? And THEN speak about things and your convictions in big words?

I do feel Barack Obama is doing things a bit backwards - jumping where he is more or less forced to jump, when pressure is on, more than having built a solid base before diving into this. Again, the terms "work horse" vs "show horse" comes to mind.....

Mr. Obama: A case of missing identity

While Mr. Obama attempts a remedial course in foreign relations within a campaign of European public relations, the American people know better than to buy this steaming heap of propaganda.

    We remember JFK.
    We remember RFK
    And we remember Dr. King.

Mr. Obama, sir? You are not one of them. Not even close.

Who do you take us for, anyway?

So stop trying to ride their coattails every which way with your feigned "statesmanship," rolled white shirtsleeves, retro-stylized PR, and weekly reinventions.

Run a campaign on substance, not subliminals.

    In fact...

Try developing a legacy of your OWN instead.

    What a concept.

Amazing that the corporate media didn't hold Bush-boy (who had no foreign policy experience) to the same high standards back in 2000 when he was running for president, as it now holds Obama. Had the media done so, we might have avoided the disasterous foreign policy that Bush-boy has lead us into, which has made us enemies all over the world and nearly backrupted the country.

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 07/19/2008 11:07:22 AM

So Bush had no experience and look at his run in office. Considered one of the worst right? And you suggest that another no experience president is the solution for the problems a no experience president has created? IS the word im looking for SHEEP or HYPOCRITE?

  • Posted By: StevenAK @ 07/19/2008 7:46:47 AM

The choice is clear. Oppose Bush - McCain and Iraq vote Obama. Obama has nothing to prove on foreign policy judgement, McCain does.

    • Posted By: SPORTLOCK09 @ 07/19/2008 11:04:50 AM

Hmmm lump McCain into a GWB huh? Is that how you think you get Obama elected? Create fear of a 3rd Bush term? The desperation of you sheep is beyond belief. Fear mongering, race baiting, kool aide drinking sheep.

  • Posted By: mhopgood123 @ 07/19/2008 8:30:49 AM

McCain, R-Ariz., the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has attended zero of his committee's six hearings on Afghanistan over the last two years.

Meanwhile, Obama attended the full Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on Afghanistan in March 2007, although he used the opportunity to ask Gen. James L. Jones, then the commander of NATO, about Pakistan.

Jones also came before the Senate Armed Services Committee that week. But McCain was a no-show.

The findings are surprising given the fact that the McCain campaign loudly criticized Obama this week for failing to schedule any hearings on Afghanistan in the last year and a half. Obama chairs the European Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which has oversight of military operations in Afghanistan.

    • Posted By: Galasso @ 07/19/2008 10:02:23 AM

I suppose the difference is that McCain actually went to Afghanistan whereas Obama is just now finding it on the map and is now being forced by the campaign to make these travels to the places he has heretofore used as talking points and props. Given his complete lack of knowledge and experience with regards to the US Military, he will be drinking out of a firehose when he is briefed on what is required to sustain an Army in the field. It's easy to get on the evening news and make broad statements about foreign policy and intentions. It's quite another thing to go to the desert and look the troops in the eye and say the same things. Obama is a smart guy - no doubt - and the press will hail him as having "closed the gap" with McCain on foreign policy based on one very brief overseas trip. That seems to be the modern standard for "experience". One thing is obvious however, and that is neither candidate views meetings with a dysfunctional Congress in committee on Iraq or Afghanistan as worthy of their time.

  • Posted By: Spacer @ 07/19/2008 10:48:23 AM

Here's a development that the GOP and their corporate media flunkies aren't going to like: The Prime Minister of Iraq has _explicitly_ endorsed Obama's 16-month timeline for getting US troops out of Iraq:

PM Al Maliki of Iraq: "U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.???

    http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/19/maliki-endorses-16-month-us-withdrawal-from-iraq/

I'll bet we won't be hearing much about that comment from the US media.

  • Posted By: Spacer @ 07/19/2008 10:34:09 AM

The "surge" that worked in Iraq was the surge of money to pay off Sunni insurgents to attack Al Qaeda instead of Americans. The pay-offs are costing the taxpayers over a quarter billion dollars per year, although that's just lunch money compared to what has been wasted in the Iraq quagmire in the past 5 years as Al Qaeda gathered strength in Afghanistan and Pakistan (which DOES have weapons of mass destruction, by the way.)

  • Posted By: nopartyaffiliation123 @ 07/19/2008 10:11:08 AM

So McDepression went to Iraq a couple of times, so now, he is an expert on the Iraq war. Oh, he was shot down in Vietnam, so he is an expert on foreign policy, his wife is a millionaire, so that makes him an expert on the economy. He is 72, so he must be an expert on life...
Are you McCain't supporters that delusional? Not a slim chance he will be elected in November...

  • Posted By: benvictor @ 07/19/2008 9:39:24 AM

With less than 4 months until the election, I believe the media overlooks the seriousness of what Obama does. In this ONE week trip, he hopes to gain the necessary foreign policy/national security experience and to also show some semblance of being a commander. Equally bad, we are told he has 300 foreign policy adviersers, no two of which can agree on anything. Thus, the Obama flip flopping. This is truly frightening for America and the security of our Nation. If we all stand back and look at this, this is a big joke. Sadly, the joke is on us and we will suffer.
