wow "eternity in hell" sounds like a loving god to me. As though any of you know the mind of God.

I have three sons who are returned missionaries. One of my favorite pictures is of them at the beach, standing next to each other, looking extremely handsome, wearing bathing suits and tee-shirts. They are smart, fun and are not holy-rollers, but they respect their bodies, their parents and their God. Sure, they swim without shirts just like everyone else, but they would never pose or take part in a money making provacative scheme that would make themselves or the church look bad. They know the difference between right and wrong or gray and black. They may show-off at home but they would never exploit themselves or young women. Everyone has to make their own choices and I'm afraid, some of these other young men have made some not-so-great choices and will end up being an embarassment to themselves and their families. My sons learned proper values from their parents and the church helped reinforce these values. I'm not being old-fashioned, just stating facts.
What??? They took their garmies off to go swiming???? Oh no! Or do the men have half garmies? What do the women do. Those little sleeves would sure look funny under the tank syle swimsuits. Talk about a layered look.
My husbands favorite message to our girls is that if they are doing something that is "the appearance of evil" they should not do it. Like going to a bar and not drinking, sleeping with someone but not having sex, are all the same like appearing in the calendar. The missionaries have made a covenant to wear the
undergarment at all times as other members of the church have. Of course any church has black and white commandments, and going into the gray area might be okay for some--He may have a reverent.feeling for not exploting woman, but men who are truly living the LDS gospel also should be respectful of their
bodies.
so, how cute that must look, a garmie under a swimsuit, boys or girls. I'm not talking bikinis either. I'm talking regular modest one piece or tankini type swimsuits. Oh I guess the swimsuits of the 20's would work.
going to a bar, oh yeah, real straight to hell stuff right there.... what if they want to see a band, or it's their friends birthday? i mean if they can go in a bar they're at least 21. it must be really fun for them when you're still treating them like they're 8
Why would you think you would go to hell for going to a bar? LDS members believe what you call "hell" to be a place for those who deny Christ, no one else.
Church is a business the business is the selling of Jesus Christ, if people aren't buying then interject Fear as to intimidate one into your belief by the threat of eternal damnation if they don;t accept what you're saying is the truth. what a joke! Give us your money that is what god would want we need to build exquisite temples to glorify the Lord whatever. If people aren't buying what you're selling then as with any business your going to have to shut your doors. Religion has killed or murdered more people in the past centuries that any other conflicts all in the name of God , again what a joke when you religious idiots quit acticg that you're more pius than the next guy and that you're religion is THE ONLY TRUE PATH to God then and only then will world peace ever be possible. You religious zealots are all the same.
Yes, I agree that the churches (pretty much every major organized religion) act from a position of power and authority - theirs. They rule by fear of damnation in order to hold on to their power and money. Sad, but true. Developed thousands of years ago as a way for people to explain and accept the things they did not understand. Sadly, passed down from gen to gen, capitalizing on this fear and calling it Faith. I treat others well because it feels good to do it, not because I am afraid of going to hell if I don't. Everyone is allowed to their own beliefs, of course, these just happen to be mind.
Good comment, I totally agree with you.
Exactly. There is no more contempable creature on earth than a God peddler. If God doesn't sell they will sell dope before they will work for a living. A cyst on the ass of humanity.
all of you can join our church(which happens to be pentecostal) and as usual we are happy to have anyone attend
First of all as a note to the editor; There is absolutely no "required" underwear for members of the Mormon faith. Second the guy was excommunicated because he deliberately went against his church leaders counsels. If he doesn't want to believe his church leaders then it would be a bit hard to believe in the church itself. And on top of that, it just makes a bad image of the church. If you believe in God, (I personally do) I really doubt that He would have approved a calendar depicting Jesus Christ and the Twelve Apostles taking off the old robes to show off their sexy abs.
I keep seeing people refute that there are no "required" underwear, but it IS true that "good" mormons will vow to wear such underwear and it IS a requirement if they want to be considered good mormons. The under"garments" are symbolic of commitments that mormons make, and are an external sign that they are still committed to keeping those promises. It IS true that only those who have reached the age of majority (usually 18), and missionaries are definitely amoung those expected to wear the undies.
I'd rather see the 'beefcake' version of the so-called missionaries than the ubiquitous white shirt, black pants and tie along with the name tag variety. I usually try to beat a hasty retreat somewhere when I see the 'latter' (no pun intended). At least there is a 'human' element to the calendar.. anyway who are they really trying to appeal to here? personally I prefer a good man with intelligence and a sensitive nature rather than that of a 'Chppendale'! at least you can have a good conversation with him! Either way this is coming from a woman who thinks that this is a crass and irreverant form of advertisment in direct contradiction of what the church is supposed to represent!
Comment: I have a question for both of you. A man in this article was excommunicated for selling a calendar which misrepresents the way the Church of LDS wants its missionaries to be seen - in terms of respect for bodies, family and religion.
In my community in Southern California, a large LDS family owns an employment agency. I worked for them for a short time, when I first decided to sell out personal ethics for short term gain (big mistake) to improve family finances - I found my professional ethics at risk and had to quit.
These people were incredibly racist, unethical business people, operated their business in violation of most employment laws and actually voiced their opinions that their temporary employees (which they provided to business) were not human beings but simply product. (Not mere business meeting talk - but sincere belief that they didn't count - mostly because of their race).
Why when other LDS members in the community asked me about them and I told them what I could about their racism, ethics and violations - were they not excommunicated? Because they tithe regularly? Attend regularly.
I was raised with good Christian values. I know longer follow that faith, but I know enough after reading the book of Mormon and my extensive study of the bible as a young woman to know this family violated every tenet, commandment and principle that Christ stood for, again, why no consequence for their behavior which actually harmed a great many individual human beings?
Which is the greater sin?
Just because these individuals were acting un-Christlike does not mean that all members of our faith should be held in the same light. People make mistakes, act inappropriately, act contrary to the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ all the time and manage to hide their sins or receive no immediate punishment for it. But everyone one day, perhaps in this life and if not then in the next, will have to account for what they have done. Every criminal who breaks civil law and commits a crime may not be found immediately and punished. That doesn't mean that those crimes are condoned by society. I am sorry the experience you had with these people was a terrible one, but those people are the minority in our church and if you look you will find many great people who love the Lord and try to follow him on a daily basis.
As an excomunicated member of the Church also what is happening to the free agency we were given when we were born nobody has the right to take that away from us not even the General Authorities of the Church. That is our's to choose what to do with our lives and what not to do nobody has the right to take that free agency away from you except our Heavenly Father and he has not taken mine or anybody else's away that I know of. After all let's think to how some of the Church Members that are supposed to be upholding the family and are committing incest and running to the Church Authorities for forgiveness they are breaking the laws of God these missionaries are not breaking any laws of God.
Free agency does not equal freedom from responsibility or consequences. Furthermore, when you exercise free agency you don't get to choose the consequences. I am sorry this concept bothers you, but would you have convicted felons telling the courts what their punishment is going to be? Judges do that and it the LDS church when a member is brought before a disciplinary court it is the church appointed judges who, likewise, determine the consequence. Once someone is excommunicated they can run around, like you, claiming they were wronged, and thereby remain excommunicated, or they can repent, as excommunication is intended to assist with, and return to the faith. Obviously, you have chosen to continue denial.
I'm sorry by the way, alfadva. I wasn't replying to your comment. I was making a general comment to the discussion. I've never posted here before and just hit the wrong button.
Atruthseeker, do you know your true lds church history? Do you? If you did you would know that Joseph Smith himself was a liar. I am a history buff who is also a member of the church. I have seen documentation that JS took many wives and some that his own wife Emma did not know about. I decided to go outside the realm of just church teachings and discover the whole picture. If you did it would scare the life out of you.
The young men look great in the Calender. I applaud them. No worse than going swimming on a beach and don't we all look there.
Organized religions deal in fear based. You LDS know it. If you don't tow the line you will be excommunicated or denied entrance to the Temple. If is fear based and it is sad.
He probably did not do anything else. They just needed to make an example of him and by doing so he has now sold many, many more calenders. This to me is funny and great at the same time.
Brought negative attention to the LDS and WOW what were they thinking?
You LDS go back and truly study history and you will be amazed at what you find. The church makes you feel like they were all fabricated lies and you are not to believe them, it is not the case. Much of history is true and not just Mormon history. Truly study history and you will find many things that you were not counting on. Momons have repeatedly communicated their own for writing books and telling truth. They know it would hurt the Church.
The truth is always the best to know.
JJ
You begin your remarks by stating you are a "history buff" who is also a "member of the church." Stop delluding yourself and the public you are trying to deceive. You are not a member of the LDS church. I always find it hysterical, in a sad way, when people begin their remarks with "I am a member of the church, but..." You are no more a member of the LDS church than is the Pope. And speaking of the Pontiff, I remember when Pope John Paul visited the United States and was greeted at the airport by then President Clinton, in a pouring rain. Remember what he said? He was speaking to the issue of abortion and Catholics. Clinton did his lip-biting thing as he grimaced in pain. He said that abortion and Catholicism are incompatable. He said you cannot be Catholic and support a woman's right to an abortion. Yet, their they are, 50% of professed catholics also arguing for abortion rights. Do you want to claim it was simply the Pope's opinion? Read catholic doctrine then. Devout Catholics beleive that the Pope is the only living apostle, the head of the church, the only one authorized to receive revelation, and infallable when he speak on behalf of the church. Just as any catholic who believes abortion is okay is not really a catholic, their protestations to the contrary, anyone claiming to be LDS who speaks as some are doing here are either liars or deceiving themselves.
I couldn't have said it better myself! P.S. I am a former Catholic and currently LDS.
Guess what? This is the kind of thing that happens when an organization is a "real" religion - you have to learn how to take portrayals that are not flattering (in the organization's view, anyway) in stride. Imagine if the Catholic Church had to comment on every glib and joke ever made about it? What if Muslims had to shake their fingers at every bad terrorist impersonation Comedy Central's ever aired? Let's not start on the whole "Jews run the media" idea. Mormonism, by virtue of it's (relatively) recent general societal acceptance, is just getting acquainted with how it goes. Not saying it's fun, but that's what happens when you stop being strange to people. A "religion" that sues the heterodox for trademark infringement, on the other hand...
Hey hapyvlygrl, if it was a calendar of Catholic priests, they would be "raping" young boys!!! You need to pull your head out of the sand and realize these men are beautiful works of art created by god. You bring in the "sexual" aspect not us.
I'll stick to the subject at hand. The question is, "Did a frisky calendar get an LDS member excommunicated?" I agree that it probably had more to do with the fact that they included photos of themselves acting as missionaries, with their official name tags on. As soon as those photos were included, they appeared in that calendar as official representatives of the LDS organization. It was probably considered that they had no legal authority to do so, especially given that the creator of the calendar was no longer even an active member of the Church. On that basis, refusing to discontinue selling the calendar was more likely the reason for disciplinary action. If they were simply men wanting to pose without their shirts on, representing only themselves, the outcome might have been entirely different.
comment: I am grieved by this. Am regretful that it has hit the media also. The people from the Sodom and Gamorrah that we currently live in are posting their comments here about the church. They are spouting views concocted from cauterized concience. I can see why it is prophecied that when God finally cleans this world he will start with his own house. Mr. Hardy is not one person I will ever envy on several fronts--
This "Hardy boy" is obviously making money off an idea that is kooky. He is saying that he is the man to free the Mormons from their repressive ways. I think he likesw to promote himself and make money. Maybe a combination Mormon/Baptist porn calender would also help in his great quest as a liberator .
.
I'm saddened by this article and the subject. What is forgotten here is that these young men are missionaries, they are about the work of the lord, not about enticing whom ever with their shirtless bodies. The human body IS beautiful, created by God, not to be utilized in a sexualized mannor. Jesus didn't preach with his shirt off. What could these young return missionaries and their families be thinking? You don't see calendars of Catholic Priests displaying their "wares" as a "come on" for their religion...this is nothing more than the adversary at work and sad that someone who claims to be LDS has so little regard for what he is doing...only concerned with the almighty buck. This guy was excommunicated for a reason and I understand it perfectly, he is not telling the truth when he says he was excommunicated for not paying tithing or attending his meetings...that is a falsehood, plain and simple. And the fact that he has to create this falsehood is further testimony to me that he has little regard for his Heavenly Father, his Church, or those Missionaries out in the field working to share the Gosple of Jesus Christ. This is disrespectful. PERIOD.
wow... there is a lot of latent hostility on the subjects at hand (and there seem to be many). first subject- did Mr Hardy get what he deserved: yes and yes. The church stand for a moral decency at all times (as does many other religions). and yes- he will receive his earthly reward by selling many, many of the calendars. Secondly, and this always seems to creep up, the church does not practice polygamy. Those that do are excommunicated immediately. Those that are practicing are not of the church- period. The church did once upon a time practice polygamy BEFORE it was illegal. Once the law took effect- that was the end of it in the church. Those who continued were ex'd. This happened before the turn of the century (over a hundred years ago). As for the massacre- a very, VERY dark part of our history. The members were driven out of many, many places to the far west and had finally reached the end of the rope (as it were). Many were slaughtered and it still haunts the church today.
There are dumb people everywhere and in all walks of life- even in the church. We all are imperfect- by evidenced of us being mortal. We try to be better every day. I still to this day do stupid things. At the end of the day- I pray for forgiveness and the strength and wisdom to try harder- be better than yesterday. The next day I get up and try it again.
Do you think for one moment that the Catholics were just going to stand by and let innocents be molested without doing anything? Absolutely not! They took action- and it may bankrupt them. Are the Muslims judged harshly for the acts of the extremists? I hope not. But the world is a forgiving place and people. I for one do not judge the entire church for the wrongs of some. People in the LDS do, upon occasion, some really dumb things- but we try harder tomorrow to get it right. We forgive and move on.
The point of all this- do not judge the church on what happed over a 100 years ago, don't judge the church because someone in it did something bad to you, don't judge the church because they see things differently that you- don't judge the church- IT did nothing wrong. People in it- did. That's who is judged. And I am sorry for those who have been wronged- It is not in the teachings of the true message. Some in the church put their own "spin" on it and it sometimes get out of control. It is regrettable.
For those who do not believe- I wish you well in life- whereever that leads you. Those of us that do- it is well with us.
Something else to keep in mind- the basis of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is all founded on religious principles- if we lose that- we lose what makes us who we are and able to even HAVE this conversation...
I think we are all missing the point Mormon or non mormon the calender of the Mormon Men is disgusting if you look into their eyes they are enticing to women to develope a wong idea to go ahead and have sex with them. God say's that we are to keep ourselves pure until we marry.
You Mormons are a little ridiculous. A member can make a calendar with shirtless men and get excommunicated, but Bill Marriott can peddle hard-core porn in his hotel rooms and not get excommunicated. That makes a lot of sense. By the way, there is nothing wrong or shameful about the human body. It's natural and beautiful.
I too am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Being a Christian means more than "believing" in Christ; a Christian sincerely tries to follow the example of Jesus Christ and live by his teachings. Immodest images of men or women do not promote thoughts of Jesus Christ, his example, or his teachings.
dude, jesus is wicked hot! i saw him at heather's party at her cabin last week, he was talking to a really hot girl though....
yourface...you need to get your act together and find Jesus....He is nothing to make jokes about. He layed down his live for you and suffered...I only wish you knew how much! I wish you really knew His love for you...my prayers go out to you!!
i found jesus!! he was here in my pants all along!! by the way, he said to lighten up....
