It’s Still Not Easy Being Green

'Anne of Green Gables' turns 100 this year, but she's the most modern girl in the bookstore.

Comment: Every young girl should read this book, This book gave me a sense of worth even when i did not understand what it was giving me! I have never read a book where i felt as closed to the character as to Anne Shirley and I am a Haitian women who grew up in Montreal. I was not an orphan - but my mother left me in Haiti to come to Canada to pursue the "Canadian" dream. When i arrived in Montreal at the same age as Anne, I had the same feelings of displacement, abandonment, survivorship, and a will to prove that i was not a burden but a blessing. Like Anne, it took my mother years to realize this and like Anne i am grateful that my mother let my free spirit, wit, and sense of adventure developed (never had a curfew even when i was 10 years old!). And like Anne standing on the cliff looking at the ocean, whenever i walk into a room full of "important" people, i think of my favorite line from the book: "Look at that sea, girls--all silver and shadow and vision of things not seen. We couldn't enjoy its loveliness any more if we had millions of dollars and ropes of diamonds."

Comment: I agree that Anne is an amazing heroine and applaud her receiving so much coverage in Newsweek (Anne fans should note that Diane Rehm will be discussing the book on her show tomorrow 7/23) and I also agree that there are many heroines from classic YA literature who should get more respect (most notably Maud Hart Lovelace's intelligent and independent aspiring writer Betsy Ray of the Betsy-Tacy series). But I strongly disagree with the contention that "it's rare to find a best seller with a strong heroine anymore." One look at the New York Times children's bestseller list from the past five or so years will reveal the following fantastic females: Louise Rennison's hilarious and indefatigable Georgia Nicolson who was first introduced in Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging; Ann Brashares' fast friends in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series (which is popular enough to garner its second feature film adaptation next month); Meg Cabot's strong and smart Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries (also a successful film franchise) as well as her Allie Finkle from Allie Finkle's Rules for Girls; Cornelia Funke's Meggie from Inkheart; Gail Carson Levine's intrepid Ella Enchanted; and brave Liesel Meminger from Mark Zusak's The Book Thief, to name just a few.--www.BookClubGirl.com

Comment: Homosexuals should not be aloud to spend time with children and corrupt there minds. Homosexuality is just as wrong as Murder they are both depraved sick crimes against what is natural.
Both these crimes fly in the face of what is normal decient human behavior.
Anyone that supports homosexual activity is a contributor to it.
    Homosexuality is wrong.
Its is not diversity it is perverisity
They should be given the mental help they need.
It is not about left or right wing politics its about right and wrong.
Homosexuality is wrong and always will be just because you say its not does not mean its true.

Comment: In my book bad spelling is as terrible a crime as murder, while homosexuality isn't as bad as this commentator makes out and always will be just because you say its not does not mean its true.

Comment: Anne of Green Gables ranks as one of my favorite books. And this author is not wrong, Anne Shirley is a thoroughly modern girl living in old-fashioned times. Because of her orphan status, Anne has license to do what other girls would not dare! (Their mamas wouldn't let them). Anne's scrapes are timeless--usually due to her head-strong, impetuous nature. Everyone kid can relate!

Comment: I loved Anne of Green Gables when I was five, and I'll love her when I'm 105! I never realized just how old Anne really is! If you have never read the books I suggest you atleast watch the movies!
