With 8 years of failure by conservatives, you have a cocktail for a beatdown. How is John McCain going to inspire the voter turnout for his party? His great speeches? Conservative talk radio? His flip-flop talk express bus overstuffed with Lobbyists? We all love to engage in punditry but the facts are the facts. Repubs do not have the votes to win. Outside of a total collapse (And I mean TOTAL colapse, not merely a split of the electorate)the Dem party they can offer up a broccoli f-art in a jar and still gain the White House.
What planet are you conservatives living on?
Sorry McCain. Good ridance Republican toe tappers.......I won't miss you.
ApostasyUSA -
For once in your life, you might want to consider keeping your nose out of the jar.
Although you probably are tempted to continue what may be a life-long habit of yours, especially since it tends to portray the odour of your posts, consider showing some discipline at least once in your life.

Obama is 47, not 17. If elected, he will not be the youngest president. JFK was (44) when he took office. You speak of diapers, Obama is out of diapers, McCain is getting old enough to start wearing diapers again.
Russia's New President is age (42)
Bush served as Governor of Texas for 1 term and Straight to the White House....
Bush Jr. Had No National Experience, No International Experience and Definitely No War Exdperience...
Otherthan being Held Prisoner in Viet Nam for 5 Years, Mccain has No Record of Distinguished Service, otherthan his Fore Parents, his Naval Admiral Father and Grandfather.
McCain being Tabbed as the Viet Nam "Song Bird" for Devulging Classified Information and over 32 Anti-American Video Tapes....
Why is this man Running for President ?
If anyother Viet Nam Vet did what McCain did, they would be in Levensworth Prison an surely not Running for Any Political Office, moreover the Presidency of the USA.
did you mean experience? If so you spelt that wrong, if you are going to argue politics in an educated manner please people learn how to spell.
If Obama is so darn smart, better informed, the 'realist' as well as this being an obvious Democratic landslide year with the horrible job those meany-type republicans have done in the last 8 years, why is this Presidential race so darn close in the polls?
Maybe because a good dose of America DOESN'T LIKE OBAMA!
Many of us who live in the USA feel much the same. It has been over six years since that small band of terrorists attacked the World Trade Centers, and our country has never been the same since. Our land of freedom and good will has become a land of suspicion and fear. It seems like the terrorists won. They planted the seed of fear in the hearts of our people. Our people allowed that seed to blossom into paranoia, then chose weak leaders willing to sacrifice our sacred freedoms in the name of security. Immediately after the 911 attack, people began to attach US flags on their cars. They pasted small signs on their window and auto bumpers with sayings like, "united we stand", "we shall never forget" and "God bless America". We call this "bumper sticker patriotism". These same people cowered at home, afraid to fly in any airplane, terrified of another attack. They became suspicious of all strangers. Our opportunistic politicians promised to restore our security by enacting precautionary laws and regulations. Slowly, they robbed us of our essential freedoms, all in the name of protection. Anyone who spoke against them was labeled a coward, a traitor or a fool.
I do not despair. Democracy has a resiliency that allows it to heal itself given enough time. The people of the USA are already beginning to awaken. They realize that our leaders have eroded our basic freedoms in the name of security, and they do not like it. Our last election was a beacon of hope. Many of the conservative exploiters of fear were removed from office. Slowly, our politicians are beginning to restore our cherished freedoms.
We are not a people who believe in aggression, in torture or in the violation of human rights. The foundation of our government is based on "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". We were once the beacon of hope for oppressed people in other lands and we want to gain that title back. Most of us can see that we erred in allowing our freedom to be sacrificed so cheaply. I think we will fight to restore it. Our courage is slowly returning
Oh my! Obama is telling Bush and McBush how to run their foreign policy in Iraq too!
Hooray for President Obama. He's already elected, just a matter of time.

Jack999 Well said. We need to keep hearing that again and again. Thanks, j-and-bb
I hope someone reads my comment and lets me know , This young idealist is bad form us Americans . He knows nothing of War , fighting the enemy . He doesnt even know who the enemy is? was,nt
This country was,nt made great by Blacks , whites , indians , spanish , catholism , muslims . It was made great by the Pilgrams who came w/ the Bible . Who set up the Government and led it .
*Why accept an anti-christ now . send him & his minister to palistine or arab muslim coutries and have
him run them . But he,s bad if or if he,s not elected . He will divide our country .
Obama does know who the enemy is, it is Al Qaeda.
The Pilgrams were some of the early settlers to America, but they were not the ONLY settlers. Plymoth colony was not the first settlement in the U.S. Only 21,000 of the settlers were puritans and they only founded the colony of Massachusetts. The puritans did not found and lead our government. Of the 55 delegates of the Constitutional Convention 7 were from the Congregational church, which came from the puritans. Of the first five presidents, only John Adams was a member of the Congrational Church.
Thank you no insult or sarcasim.
you mean bible tooting whites who owned blacks asians, mexicans ect ect right??? go back to 5th grade history, and prove to the world our forfathers were Christian to the bone!
Absolutely. He will divide the country. As we have seen, leaders tend to play out their psychodynamic conflicts on the public stage. Think of Nixon's paranoia and Clinton's need to be forgiven. Obama is a conflicted, divided, soul. This explains much of his flip flopping. In the end, he is unlikely to please anybody. I am almost hoping that he will win. It will be so fascinating psychologically.
Are you naive enough to think that the world is so black and white that you can hold on position on everything? Obama is right- the world is nuanced and each conflict is very different. American foreign policy should reflect that reality rather than the broad brush policy currently in place which has only worked to increase insecurity globally and the increase in anti-Americanism.
Anti-Christ? I guess that would make Bush what? The Christian ideal? It takes more than saying that you are a Christian to make you one, especially a god one. Actions not words.
He will not divide this country. Look what just happened in Iraq. They now want to have troops out the same time that Obama said that troops should be out. Obama is now looking like a leader. Even FOX had to say that things are going Obama's way. How come a man that the right feel will tear this country apart is looking so Presidential. You guys said that Bill Clinton would tear this country apart. We had 8 years of great times. I am glad that the White House is following Obama's lead.
Great article Mr. Zakaria. I watched the televised interview, and this is a superb follow-up report. I sincerely hope it is widely read.
It seems like a direct supplemental to your report that the NY Times rejected Senator McCain's "response" attempt to Senator Obama's Op-Ed...
Instead of offering an intelligent opposing view, he attacked the messenger instead of the message... We learned that as early as grammar school english lit class...
I am a long time registered independent, but I find myself joining the ranks of those that say McCain just does not get it...
ajon1600 Very good comment. This was an unusual article in that it is not the usual take on Obama.
Russia's President is age (42) an he's an Educated Lawyer, who has no KGB or Military History.
Obama is 46, soon to be (47) and his Diplomacy Policies mentioned throughout the Dem. Primaries are Now bearing the CHANGE IN POLICY mentioned by Obama.
The Bush Administration is now working on a "Time Horizon" Opposed to calling it a "Timeline, Time Frame or Time Limit" and having Sit Down Diplomatic talks with Iran, though they said they would Not and lets not forget Bush's "Axis of Evil" North Korea, they had Direct talks as well.
Obama was and is ....Right
Note: All of a Sudden this has Happened this Weekend, along with British Prime Minister Brown, Visiting the Middle East Region as well, just Happenstence, I don't think so.
The Iraqi Government Hopes for a 2010 exit of US Military, a Exit that is actually Happening NOW and will Continue.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/07/20/obama-expected-to-meet-wi_n_113933.html
BAGHDAD ??? Iraq's government welcomed Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Monday with word that it apparently shares his hope that U.S. combat forces could leave by 2010.
The statement by Iraq's government spokesman, Ali al-Dabbagh, followed talks between Obama and Prime Minister Nouri Al-Maliki _ who has struggled for days to clarify Iraq's position on a possible timetable for a U.S. troop pullout.
Al-Dabbagh said the government did not endorse a fixed date, but hoped American combat units could be out of Iraq sometime in 2010. That timeframe falls within the 16-month withdrawal plan proposed by Obama, who arrived in Iraq earlier in the day as part of a congressional fact-finding team.
"We are hoping that in 2010 that combat troops will withdraw from Iraq," al-Dabbagh told reporters, noting that any withdrawal plan was subject to change if the level of violence kicks up again.
As he departed from talks with al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani in Baghdad's heavily protected Green Zone, Obama said, "We had a very constructive discussion." Obama also plans meetings with U.S. military commanders who will outline recent progress in the war he has opposed from the start.
This was the third stop on a foreign tour designed to gather information while burnishing the Democratic contender's foreign policy credentials. National security issues are the one issue area in which Obama trails Republican John McCain in the polls.
The Iraqi government comment on troop withdrawals could be embraced by the Obama campaign, but may irritate White House officials. The Bush administration has refused to set specific troop level targets and only last week offered to discuss a "general time horizon" for a U.S. combat troop exit.
At the White House on Monday, Press Secretary Dana Perino said she had not heard the latest statement from al-Dabbagh. But responding to the continuing debate over withdrawal, Perino said the U.S. shares the goal of bringing U.S. tro
Comparing a presidential candidate's qualifications with that of the Russian president raises more questions than it answers
I have to agree with you, Medvedev is hardly the shinig example by which we should judge other leaders. He's Putin's puppet and even if that works for Russia, it should not be emulated.
What questions does it raise?
First question, why would we want to compare a presidential candidate to the russian president? Do we want to govern like russia? do we suport russia's economic and military plans? etc .
What are Russia's economic and military plans?
Well operstion Chaos is back to keep the Dems divided by faking there blather. All of these so called "Rightious people" are voting McCain and doing Limbahas work still, fact is most of the harsh comments from Dem to Dem was them to keep us pissed.
Vakosh
we spend 2 billion a day to stay, they spend, mmm NOTHING your "surge" is nothing short of a war of patients, and they WILL win!! As they live there, we don't! Get over it, and besides the enemy is in ANOTHER COUNTRY! Moron!
I view McCain as a man with a military mindset and little else. He offers nothing new in terms of approaching any of the complex issues we face. He thinks on a very superficial level and shows no sign high intellect or intelligence. This is a country that values militarism and good old boy personality, and simplistic solutions. But it is also a country that recognizes a rare opportunity to choose a leader who rises far above the norm in intelligence, wisdom, and charisma. Obama is one of those rare opportunities.
Excellent point. Ignore the naysayers.
you must mean you'll support his invasion of Pakistan when he takes office!! That's rare and different.
Bush, Mccain and other responsible leaders, to include Democrats, oppose only ANNOUNCING a withdrawl plan from either Iraq or Afgahnistan! They don't object to withdrawing! They don't want to tip off a dangerous enemy as to the plan!
Obama loves to announce his intentions! Of course for political reason, and in his view the lives of our military people in these dangerous areas are EXPENDABLE, as compared to his desire to be President! This is a selfish and inept man!
The Americans Suck First Campaign he's running does not respect military professionals. 70% of Americans do not believe a timetable for withdrawing our troops should be announced! Obamas' own party is not creating conditions for an Obama Victory except, Or the DNC would be moving fast to get the Congress's approval up!
Obama is a naive idea-ist with no implimentation skills or successes. His practicle use was to flush the Clintons from the DNC, and that was other peoples' implementation! obama is awalking talking wedge issue, like Al Gore!

Soldiers donated more money to Ron Paul than to John McCain. In July. After he dropped out.
Soldiers want out, ASAP. They know the Iraqis don't want them there. They know this has been a waste of treasure and lives. They did their duty, now bring them home.
You are nobody to speak for them, and apparently, neither is McCain.
Ron Paul, who advocates immediate pullout, got more financial contributions from military people than McCain himself. In July. After he dropped out.
The military people themselves want to get the hell out of there, ASAP. They know the Iraqis want them out. They know it's a waste of treasure and lives.
Go tell those darn soldiers to go respect themselves, and stay forever!
Oh my god, I feel sorry for you. I hope kids can see what would happen to them if they drop out of school. You never make any sense.
Let me give you a clue, Sherlock. If you're an "enemy" living in Iraq, we're not going to be able to maintain the element of surprise on you with any withdrawal plans. If you've seen any of the pictures, the US army folks are the only ones with full body armor and camo - they're kind of conspicuous - and you can believe they don't often change their patrol patterns without notice.
Unless you're thinking of the movie "Blazing Saddles" where we can fool them by putting up two-dimensional cutouts of our troops, barracks, tanks, etc., I don't think we'll gain much by the "sneak pullout" strategy.
Come let's get real. Are you seriously believing that Democrats are destroying the world? If you believe that George Bush was such a great leader and McCain can prove to govern better than Obama, then give me real reasons instead of empty accusations. Obama would be a better leader based on his vision that is being implemented without him even trying because he didn't vote for the quagmire Bush tried to call Mission Accomplished a few years ago. As a matter of fact, wasnt Romney, Huckabee supposed to be the men for the GOP a few months ago. I bet you were at one point putting a stake in McCain's chest. You are out of touch.
Pro Obama statements in a blanced article compared to pro-mccain statements.
Pro Obama:
-his critics are off the mark
-Obama is a cool conservative
-Obama rarely speaks in the moralistic tones
-Obama never uses the soaring language of Bush's freedom agenda
-Obama talks admiringly of men like Dean Acheson, George Kennan and Reinhold Niebuhr, all of whom were imbued with a sense of the limits of idealism and American power to transform the world.
-his view is certainly focused on America's core security interests and is recognizably realist
- Obama seems???unusually for a modern-day Democrat???highly respectful of the realist tradition
-Obama sees a world that is in many ways going our way
And thats not all of them. ZERO positive mccain quote/thoughts. AT LEAST a couple jabs at the Rep party and mccain thoughts. And a very good jab at mccain calling him a pessimist.
great job.
Calling a spade a spade.
Obama is such a realist that he believes that:
Iran is a "tiny" country so it can't be a threat. Then his well-paid advisors educated him on foreign policy and he had to make a major revision that stupid statement.
Obama believed that a military surge would not help in Iraq and he wanted to withdraw the troops regardless of the consequences to the Iraqis. Then the surge worked just as John McCain said it would and now Obama and the liberal news media have to ignore these significant gaffes in foreign policy and come up with articles like this one.
Shame on Fareed Zakaria and Newsweek for misinforming the public to reach your political goals. Obama is dangerous for America.
Obama wanted all troops out my March of 2008, originally. I'd like him to take a trip to Iraq if that would have happend.
USA had no business going into Iraq in the first place. The sooner they leave, the better.
You have to remember that Fareed is an Indian Muslim and has a non-traditional view of what Obama's role would be as President. Fareed beiieves that POTUS should first determine what the agendas and worldview of third world countries are - then find out what the Europeans want us to do and then restructure the foreign policy of the US to become as obsequious as possible. Very much like handing the reins of the USG to the United Nations.
Zakaria is an atheist, not a Muslim. But then, I wouldn't expect you to look past the name and the dark skin.
For what it's worth, I agree with many of the moderate, centrist positions of Zakaria incluing his opposition to de-Bathification in Iraq after the invasion. His articles on the frustration of Arab populations suffering under tyrannical regimes that created the hate and misery that gave us 911 also have merit and are thought provoking. He provides a thought process where the US can be a leader in promoting real democracies and social/economic change in many parts of the world - something with enormous benefits if the world population doesn't explode as a result. The one thing that is missing is a roadmap for how to do this. The US has always had to balance its security with its generosity. The major disagreement I have with Zakaria is that he seems to want the US to relinquish her leadership and sack our defensive posture in favor of the socio/economic development of the rest of the world. That would be an egregious error.
He currently resides in New York City with his wife, Paula Throckmorton Zakaria, son Omar, and daughters Lila and Sofia. Zakaria has weighed in on his Muslim background on only one occasion, telling the Village Voice, "I occasionally find myself reluctant to be pulled into a world that's not mine, in the sense that I'm not a religious guy." His father was an Islamic Scholar. What's the dark skin remark all about?
There is no need to credit Obama for a pull out strategy. The war is practically over, thanks to the surge and specifically, John McCain .... his planned worked and ouch Obama .... you better focus on the economy, only sliver you have left.
He sees countries and even extremist groups as complex, motivated by power, greed and fear as much as by pure ideology.
From article! This is the most pure definition of who or what we are at war with, it's a true view of the BIG picture. His so called lack of experience is a soundbite. If he is lacking, he is learning at the same time, something Bush nor McCain can do! Just stay that course and the "surge" will work??? We spend 2 billion a day to stay, they pay,mm, well they live there, get the picture of patients outweighs power! We were guests, now they want us gone, do we leave-no to much profit to still be made!!! This makes us what they say we are, not what we say we are, invaders, controling there EVERY move, thought, and deal! Face it he is much smarter than anyone gave him credit for, and I look forward to his reign. As a Veteran maybe he will let me keep my military benifits, cause McCain will kill the benifits of every Cold War Vet, even if it's already known it was not so cold, but still war! Just not on paper as to who! Stop picking on a Cancer survivor! The after drugs are hard enough to deal with. As one who watched one die this way, they do say the wierdest things at the wrong time, on cue. So back off . Even if McCain had a stroke, they would still vote for a president in a coma, just cause there still American color blind!
If McCain has a stroke, let us hope that it will be in the left hemisphere. This would force him to rely on his right hemisphere. According to Reverend Wright right hemisphere dominance is preferable. Language centers might be affected, but he can still look Presidential if the facial droop is not too severe.
heheheheh good one!
Reality check. The problems that we face now in the area of foreign policy are the result of 60 years worth of bad decisions and lack of inaction on prudent issues (i.e. Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Darfur, using Afghanistan in a proxy war with the Soviets and then walking away from the responsiblities helping that country come back from the brink, pushing Iraq to fight Iran in the early 80s because of the hostage crisis in 1979).
The United States has this problem of seeing people that live simply as being too stupid to run their own affairs and resources. They don't give them the dignity or respect they are due. They think because we're the most powerful nation that we know what's better for all. But we don't. Our leaders must admit that. But they won't. I'm not looking for it. They'll continue on this good vs evil crap that will forever cost us in the long run.
Example, if you're minding your business, and someone calls you out. You're going "what"? But when they invade your neighbor and basically dismantle it, you start looking at your own defenses because it is a possiblity that you're next, even though you have done nothing.
Now we're bogged down in a country where even though they were living in a dictarship, they were getting all of the resources they needed. Shias, Sunnis, Jews and Christians alike were living in harmony in mixed neighbhorhoods and families.
Now it is very much like our neighborhoods, different and apart not being able to enjoy one another and learn. I guess that is what those in DC had mind. Keep folk separate because they are much easier to break apart.
Even though I'm a cynic, I think Senator Obama is the right man for the job at this juncture. We have a chance to forge a new path, something different than the last 60 years of mistrust and indifference toward certain nations. This is our chance to be the country that many in the world think we are. I just hope people will vote to give us that chance.
Your right about one thing we do love so to interfere with third world countries, set rules, and laws we don't have to live, by but they do or we invade! As taught as of 1975 through out the region. When we got a bloody nose from sticking it where it don't belong, and have been asked, told, to stop, but we never do!! Till 9/11, when the bully in the sand box got his first bloody nose, on the second try, [no we learned nothing by the first try] and now is bankrupt tring to swat flies with forks,FROM THE WRONG COUNTRY! Time to focus on border to border, coast to coast, for Americans, by Americans, and lead the world into a new age! [about time too] LEAD BY EXAMPLE, NOT FEAR!
