In the much talked about issue of the New Yorker Magazine that has a cartoon of Obama in Arab garb on its cover there is this long quote of Obama???s reaction to 9-11 shortly after the attack:

Even as I hope for some measure of peace and comfort to the bereaved families, I must also hope that we, as a nation, draw some measure of wisdom from this tragedy. Certain immediate lessons are clear, and we must act upon those lessons decisively. We need to step up security at our airports. We must re-examine the effectiveness of our intelligence networks and we must be resolute in identifying the perpetrators of these heinous acts and dismantling their organizations of destruction. [wHAT A WEAK KNEED RESPONSE.]

We must also engage, however, in the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, it seems to me, derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity or suffering of others. Such a failure of empathy, such numbness to the pain of a child or the desperation of a parent is not innate; nor, history tells us, is it unique to aparticular culture, religion or ethnicity. It may find expression in a particular brand of violence, it may be channeled by particular demagogues or fanatics. Most often, though, it grows out a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair.

We will have to make sure, despite our rage, that any U.S. military action takes into account the lives of innocent civilians abroad. We will have to be unwavering in opposing bigotry or discrimination directed against neighbors and friends of Middle-Eastern descent. Finally, we will have to devote far more attention to the monumental task of raising the hopes and prospects of embittered children across the globe, children not just in the Middle East, but also in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe and within our own shores.

Obama was far more worried about the other guy rather than Americans. He wants t heal the world. That is his reaction to the atrocity. For him he is al about grievences. He solution to everything is to pander to grievances. In other words America desrved to be hit because people had grievances which America hasn't satisfied and probably caused.

4. Then there is the matter of Hurricane Dolly. If it's a problem for the would-be next President of the United States to take a helicopter out to the rig because of a hurricane in the vicinity, isn't that a problem for his new energy policy?

5. There was also a big oil spill in the Mississippi River flowing into the Gulf. Very awkward timing, to say the least. And bad pictures. Over 400,000 gallons of heavy fuel oil spilled into the Mississippi River after a collision between a tanker and a barge, creating a picturesque 12-mile oil spill.

6. Finally, there is the matter of McCain's constant efforts to cut into Obama's media from abroad. He and the campaign were actually quite nasty about this, with a lot of personal denigration of Obama from staff and not one but two web videos deriding the press. And McCain himself practically called Obama a traitor, declaring that the freshman Illinois senator "would rather lose a war than lose a campaign."

Stunt choppering out to an oil rig to try to cut into the news flow wouldn't have looked too good.

As one top Republican consultant said, "Mac should have gone on vacation this week. This looks bad." Or maybe just done his thing campaigning intensively in a big swing state.

Instead of griping about missing his big opportunity on that Gulf oil rig, McCain should be thanking his lucky stars he didn't make it out there to face a raft of embarrassing questions and about 200,000 fewer people than were cheering on Obama and waving American flags in Berlin.

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell, all offshore oil drilling opponents, were all scheduled to be in New Orleans to promote their national infrastructure project the same day as McCain's fandango off the coast of Louisiana. One, Schwarzenegger, is one of McCain's most famous backers, who has several times already derided the offshore drilling scheme. Another, Bloomberg, is a rumored running mate. As it happens, Schwarzenegger had to cancel Wednesday afternoon, on account of the state's ongoing budget crisis. But he would have been asked about it again had the stunt occurred. And Bloomberg and Rendell were in Louisiana, also at the ready to criticize McCain's move.

2. McCain would have had to answer questions about his evidently false statement attributing a $10 a barrel drop in oil prices to Bush's executive order on offshore drilling. It was after he made this gaffe that he exited a town hall meeting without doing his constant press avail.

3. He would have had to answer overall questions about offshore drilling as a false way to bring down current gas prices, since it would take a very long time for it to impact prices. McCain reversed his long-held position against offshore oil drilling, and attacks Obama in his new ad for continuing his opposition to offshore drilling, thus, somehow, causing high gasoline prices. However, the federal government's own energy information agency noted just last year that it would probably take some 22 years before new offshore drilling would have a significant impact on prices at the pump.

Presidential politics ran on two tracks this week. Barack Obama roaming the world to widespread applause and great pictures. And John McCain and his campaign griping about it all.

For Thursday, McCain, a noted gambler, thought he had an ace in the hole to counter Obama's big Berlin speech. He would chopper out from Louisiana to an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Which would do two things. Remind everyone he was a naval aviator. And push his big new theme that more offshore oil drilling is the way to bring down sky-high gas prices. (The existence of which he blames on Obama, curiously, in his latest TV ad, ignoring that gas prices have tripled under President Bush.) All with really cool pix.

But his campaign had to cancel late Wednesday, officially because of the threat of inclement weather from nearby Hurricane Dolly. Which might have been a tip right there that the whole offshore drilling thing is, as putative panaceas go, pretty problematic.

McCain reportedly bemoaned the lost opportunity all yesterday.

It's somewhat surprising he's upset it didn't happen, as I think it would have been a real debacle.

Here are six reasons he is very fortunate he ended up at Schmidt's Sausage Haus -- no relation to campaign director Steve Schmidt -- in Ohio yesterday, rather than on a pitching oil platform in the Gulf of Mexico:

I pose this question for two reason???s:

1. I have stated , that in a conversation with Mr. Young last fall I was told ???Barack is discussing with his Pastor how best to publicly deal with the issue of his drug use in 1999.??? This leads me to the understanding that Rev. Wright was aware of Mr. Young???s contacts with me, and my claims about Barack Obama.

2. Barack Obama made the statement yesterday that Rev. Wright did not show any concern for him (Obama) or his campaign in regards to Rev. Wright being Rev. Wright. And it is my OPINION that both of these individuals know more than has been told about Mr. Young???s murder. And a complete unbiased investigation should prove that to be true.

Now here???s the question. Who is going to be the first one contacting authorities and pointing the finger on the other in regards to their involvement in the Donald Young murder first? Which one of these ???fine up standing figures??? are going to start making deals to save their own hides and try to pin Mr. Young???s murder on the other first?

I personally would bet Barack Obama, because if he does not, his ???Audacity to Hope??? is shot down faster than his fraudulent rise. Is the end near for Barack Obama? Many in the mainstream media are aware of Larry Sinclair???s allegations about Barack Obama and rumours in Chicago restaurant and club land since at least 2001 that Barack Obama has been doing the Down Low with gay men. Some newspaper have interviewed Larry Sinclair and visited his home in Minnesota. He has provided them with his criminal record, his health and financial records and his family history.

At least one major Chicago newspaper has indicated that it will not proceed yet because it does not want to be accused of racism or of causing problems for the first viable black candidate. Other newspapers have asked for more proof such as access to the limousine driver who witnessed the events of November 6th, 1999.

Larry Sinclair has said the driver will testify in legal proceedings. But in the meantime he wants to protect him from interference from Obama campaign, from the kind of death threats to which Sinclair has been subjected and from the kind of harassment that Obama supporters have visited on Sinclair???s elderly mother, his siblings and neighbors. However, Larry Sinclair is willing to provide assurances about his evidence to the media through his lawyer.

At first I was under the impression that I was being contacted by a member of the Obama staff to address my request that Obama himself correct his drug use record. I believed that to be, based on the questions Mr. Young had asked. What had in fact, shocked me by the conversation, was when I was asked why I had not asked Obama to disclose anything regarding our sexual encounter.

It was at this time I had a question of Mr. Young, which was ???how do you know about that????

It was after the first contact that I became very much aware that Senator Obama was fully aware of my contact with his Office and it was at that point I firmly believed Obama was going to set his drug record straight and acknowledge his crack cocaine use in 1999. I was wrong, and later communications with the person who had become know to me as Mr. Young would make that perfectly clear to me.

It was later that I learned I was not speaking to a member of Obama???s staff, but rather an individual with very personal involvements with Senator Obama. That became ever more clear in each communication.

What also became very clear to me was that these communications had begun with an intent to obtain as much information as possible as to whom I had informed about the 1999 encounters between Obama and I. And it became clearer in the end that the individual I was speaking with also had a very personal and intimate involvement with Senator Barack Obama.
