Comment: A brilliant move by the Iraqi Prime Minister. He knows if Obama wins, the weak US leader will cut tail and run without so much as establishing a long-term base in the world-critical Middle East. He knows if McCain wins, there will be an American presence there for years to come. Obama would render all the effort, money, and lives we have spent on this war meaningless to America's future.

Comment: John McCain doesn???t know Shiites and Sunnis are Bitter enemy since Saddam days, Also this spring, McCain twice appeared to mistake again twice between Sunnis and Shiites, two branches of Islam that split violently

John McCain doesn???t know where is Pakistan? , McCain responded I'm afraid it's a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border. The ABC posting added: Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border.

Somalia for Sudan: As recounted in a reporters pool report from McCain Straight Talk Express bus on June 30, the senator said while discussing Darfur, a region of Sudan: How can we bring pressure on the government of Somalia?
Senior adviser Mark Salter corrected him Sudan

Germany for Russia memorializes McCain referring to President Vladimir Putin of Russia following a trip to Germany as President Putin of Germany by the way Germany Never have a President only Chancellor.

This spring, McCain said troops in Iraq were down to pre-surge levels when in fact there were 20,000 more troops than when the surge policy began.

In perhaps the most curious incident, McCain said earlier this month that as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he had tried to confuse his captors by giving the names of Pittsburgh Steelers starting players when asked to identify his squadron mates. McCain has told the story many times over the years but always correctly referred to the names he gave as members of the Green Bay Packers

In Phoenix earlier this month, McCain referred to Czechoslovakia, which has been divided since Jan. 1, 1993, into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He also referred again to Czechoslovakia during a debate in November and a radio show in April.

Comment: Here is a great article from Germany....it show's not every German drinks Kool-Aide.............

Once again it's Der Spiegel that manages to put Obama's Berlin speech in perspective..............

The [estimated] 200,000 onlookers who thronged to listen to Obama's speech should not deceive us. Listening is not the same as agreeing. Obama divides people, and not along traditional party lines.
It is, anyway, a great mistake to divide the voters in Western nations into left and right, aggressive and peace-loving, market orientated and critical of capitalism. In reality there are just two types of voters: the romantic democrats and the common-sense democrats.

So far, Obama has been the candidate for the romantics. His skill lies in enchanting his supporters with words. Whatever is held against him, his supporters turn into his favor. The man is an unknown quantity, no mud sticks to him! The man is measured, no, he is visionary! He wants to save the entire world, but it does desperately need to be saved, doesn't it?

It would have been interesting to find out how the reconciliation between Muslims and Christians will come about, when shortly before his departure he threatened the Islamic Republic of Pakistan with a military strike against its border region with Afghanistan. Pakistanis value their sovereignty as much as Americans.
Is it not foolhardy to set a timeframe for the withdrawal of US troops from Iraq at 16 months, when American generals fear another civil war? In Vietnam, they point out, the killing did not end after the US withdrew its troops.

And then there is the breathtaking list of domestic policy promises: affordable health insurance for the 47 million currently unregistered Americans, tax exemptions for all retirees on pensions under $50,000, higher minimum wages, multi-billion dollar infrastructure projects and finally tax credits for most Americans to boost the economy. How can that be paid for, if, as Obama has categorically ruled out, he isn't going to raise taxes on the middle class? Or is he planning for the US to go even more into debt (something he has equally vehemently ruled out)?

Of course, Obama may have no option now than to continue to offer the sky. At first many election strategists thought voters wouldn't believe politicians, promises anymore after their experience with Bush. Surprisingly, the opposite seems to be the case: Right now they'll believe everything.

    Comment:

The real deal is, Obama and co. should have evaluated upfront the ramifications of visiting these 2 bases of wounded troups and then leave it off the agenda or put in on the agenda. It is called up front planning. But to have made a conscious decision to visit the wounded troops by putting it on the schedule, they should not have skipped it as there was a solution which was to visit the troops expecting him, only just as a Senator without campaign people and publicity. That was something he could have done. Why didnt he do that? The pentagon said they would host it for him at the bases, but he must have felt he wouldnt get anything out of it and opted to work out in the hotel gym instead,

    OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE STATEMENT:

Geoff Morrell, the Pentagon Press Secretary, issued a statement emphasizing that the Pentagon did not cancel Mr. Obamas visit.

Senator Obama, in his official capacity, is always welcome to visit Landstuhl or any other military hospital. But it is not permitted to bring with him campaign staff. His team was notified of that, and they made a decision not to visit the hospital. But we were ready and willing to host him there. In fact, we had made arrangements for his campaign plane to land at Ramstein, and to take care of the campaign staff and press in a passenger terminal there, while the senator and senate staff, if he liked, went on to visit wounded warriors. They made a decision based on their own calculations not to visit. Senator Obama, like any other member of the senate, is always welcome to visit our wounded warriors or our military hospitals around the world. But they do so in their official capacity, and not as a candidate. He can come in and bring senate staffers as well, if he likes, but campaign staffers and press are not permitted to accompany him.

Comment: McCain is a Hypocrite...He DID NOT Visit Troops in Military Based Hospitals as well, Yet Demands Obama, to visit, when the Government Advised Obama otherwise.

Barack Obama canceled a pre-planned visit to the troops in Germany yesterday after being told by the Pentagon that the trip would violate a Pentagon policy prohibiting campaign stops on military installations. No problem there.

However, the McCain campaign is now blasting Obama:

The McCain camp has nonetheless been using Obama's canceled trip to insinuate that he's anti-troops. "Barack Obama is wrong," McCain spokesperson Brian Rogers said in a statement yesterday. "It is never 'inappropriate' to visit our men and women in the military."
The problem here is that the McCain campaign was denied a visit to a military base under the same policy back in April. Of course, there was no outcry or false outrage from Brian Rogers at that time.

    From CNN:

With Department of Defense rules prohibiting political campaigning on military bases, it was determined that in some cases McCain could visit the installations as a senator but could not engage in any political activity or have news media present.

McCain campaign officials said Thursday they intentionally did not campaign on military property.

"We follow the rules," said senior McCain adviser Steve Schmidt.

Because all three presidential candidates are sitting senators, DoD officials have privately noted for some weeks that the whole matter of drawing the line between Senate business and campaigning is sensitive.

A U.S. Army official told CNN there are no pending requests from any of the campaigns to visit Army bases at this time. He noted that Sen. Barack Obama recently visited Fayetteville, North Carolina, but did not go to Fort Bragg; and Sen. Hillary Clinton visited Killeen, Texas, but did not go to Fort Hood.

For his Wednesday visit to the U.S. Naval Academy -- of which he is a graduate -- McCain was allowed to make a political appearance at the academy's football stadium because it is privately owned property and is not owned or run by the U.S. military.

Earlier in the day, when McCain had breakfast with midshipmen on academy grounds, it was closed to the press and considered a private event.

Comment: Yeah how does Obama convert the racists and the chickenhearted of this country, concerned only of the WMDs and the "brown boogeymen" who will get you at 3am, what to do what to do. You se 80% of America believes that we are going in the WRONG direction, which McCain offers more of. Paint it with any brush you like and deny with all your might, it boils down to race, we ALL know it, we ALL see it, it's a clear as crystal. Not hispanics, Not blacks, Not women, Not YOUNGER WHITE voters, just the old crowd, the ones who swallowed but did not accept the "civil rights movement, those who say they don't like Obama because he's a "Muslim" and that's laughable, the word MUSLIM has simply taken the place of another word that is no longer acceptable to the public, not that it ever really was, but for a time, the time of this ONE group of OLDER WHITE MEN, you could use that other word and hate for the color of skin, that time is now gone. A new hatered has come and it's not what they want, it's what they can get away with, SO, they (older white men) don't hate him because he's black, nope, they hate him becuase he's Muslim, and they'll barelyadmit to that, they'll have some other bullsh!t excuse, "Experience" Obama has experienced more in his life that qualifies him to relate to TRUE Americans than some born with a silver spoon up his a$$, my daddy is an admiral, my wife is a billionaire, wanna and self procliamed "hero". Who has NEVER had to want for anything.
What Obama may lack in "experience" he MORE than makes up for in "INTELLIGENCE" I hear nobody arguing his intalligence, especially not 894th out of 899 McCain.
Obama also TRULY UNDERSTANDS diplomacy, not as McCain or Bush see it...that stupid step you have to pretend to go through before you bomb bomb somebody, but that diplomacy SAVES LIVES, American and foreign. Now I know that some of you blood thirsty chicken hawks think hey as long as more of them die than do Americans, we win, tell that to the nearly 4500 families that have lost their loved one in what John McCain described as a "WAR FOR OIL".
Obama has ALWAYS maintained that the REALwar America should be engaged in is in Afghanistan, where those who attacked us make base. That war has been ignored by Bush and McCain for years, it was only a week ago that McCain first mentioned Afghanistan, pitty. I guess Bin Laden is NOT a priority for McCain or Bush for that matter.
Obama has dignity, he has and still sticks to his character, where as McCain SWORE he wanted a "clean" campaign, at the first sign of his impending doom, he resorts to stopping just short of calling Obama a traitor...nice and clean, and how does Obama respond..."I feel sorry for John McCain". No mud, no name calling, as that is the McCian way of campaigning as is evident by his adds, his words, his actions, brought forth from his DESPERATION.

    Good day ;)

I hope ya'll ain't bet the farm, on this election. Cause if you did, you are about to be homeless.

Instead, he will be in Columbus, Ohio, speaking at a nighttime cancer event.

"An extra day spent in Ohio is not really a problem," senior aide Mark Salter said, insisting that a bit of bad luck does not make a trend, even as the campaign was scrambling to fill the time.

"There's a hurricane; we had to cancel an event," he said with a shrug after McCain spent a rainy day in northeast Pennsylvania attending a town hall meeting in Wilkes-Barre and a fundraiser, and commiserating with a couple at a grocery store in Bethlehem about the high price of food. My Friends and yet All this BellyHoo about Obama, though McCain himself suggested and wanted to Tag Alongside Obama on his World Tour....

John, You asked for it and now , You must Live with it...The World Embraces him and Britain is going to be So Cranked up, to Meet and Greet the Next President of the USA !!!

You Got what you wanted John, You've just been (Shish Ca Bobbed) !!!

Most newspapers headlined Obama's pending arrival with the leftist daily Liberation giving a full front-page spread to "Obamania."

After Berlin, where Obama drew some 200,000 spectators for a speech Thursday, the conservative newspaper Le Figaro wrote that Obama is not looking to draw crowds in Paris "because he knows his huge popularity in our country could ill serve him with a part the American centrist electorate."

That was a reference to the negative image France had for years among some Americans because of Paris' vocal opposition to the invasion of Iraq.

Only one venue was on Obama's Paris schedule ??? the presidential Elysee Palace. A meeting with President Nicolas Sarkozy was set for 5 p.m. to be followed by a joint news conference.

Sarkozy, a conservative, was rushing back from a summit in southwestern France to host Obama.

Although Sarkozy and Obama are on different sides of the political fence, the French leader seems to have a softspot for the US senator.

"Obama? He's my buddy," Le Figaro quoted the president as saying before Obama's arrival. "I am the only Frenchman who knows him."

Sarkozy, elected in 2007, first met Obama in 2006 while a candidate for the French presidency.

Sarkozy offered considerably less to Obama's Republican rival, John McCain during a March visit to Paris. After 45 minutes of talks, McCain was left on his own, fielding questions from reporters in the courtyard of the Elysee.

French supporters of Obama were excited about the visit.

Comment: Why at this point is Obama even having such discussions with the Iraqi officials? As a US Senator he should be there in support of current policy. If he is elected then he could change the policy to suit his views. This whole trip should have been a meet and greet only and a visit with the troops. Keep your mouth shut until you are in office, if that happens. The man is showing very little respect or class. It is not all about him!

Comment: Your comment is viewed as accurate. He should not be allowed to address nations as if he has presidential privilege and authority - Obama is a shameless HOAX. The campaign for president is exclusively within the borders of the U.S.A. & who ever becomes the next president, will at that time explore international support for the American foreign policy. Here we have a rookie senator making international demands.

Comment: All of you obamamohammed groupies, make me sick, to my stomach. I'm fairly certain, many, if not most, are very patriotic American's. Your just naive and easily influenced. Many of you are kids, and don't know any better. Others are older, and just trendy. A few are just dumb. And some are caught up in a racial pride deal. While I don't care for any of these reasons, I think ya'll are pitiful, I at least ,can smile and shake my head, in amazment. It's the other substantial group that makes me sick.... that are just a bunch, of punks and sissies. Like Hussein, Pelosi, Reid, Dean, and Big Daddy Soros. Your Emporer and High Priest.

You know who you are. You think America is evil. You support our country's avowed enemies. You want to see the military diminished, if not completely eliminated. You think, America needs to be punished, That she's evil. You think a socialist, euro-trash, govt. nanny state, would save the nation. You want America, as we know her, destroyed..

Well it's not gonna happen. America was founded by GOD, and there is no power on earth, that can bring your fantasy to reality. I know. I know. Hussein is a Messiah. He can manifest his will. Yeah right. He is a two-bit charlatan. He is a Crook and a Fraud. His handlers, with help from the so-called MSM, have performed admirably well. BUT, the play time's about over. It's time to get serious.

Hussein is about to be revealed as the cheap copy of Jimmy Carter, that he is. A lot fewer morals, but a cheap copy, just the same. And the original JC, almost did destroy America. We learned our lesson, with Mr. Peanut. And he wasn't even a mohammed.

I hope ya'll ain't bet the farm, on this election. Cause if you did, you are about to be homeless.

The punk refused to visit the wounded. Hussein is a puke and a sissy. Probably afraid some of the wounded G.I.s, would kick his ass. He DID VOTE NOT TO FUND THEM. They know what he is.

He is a piece of crap.

Obama's lead is down to only 3 points (oh no!) in today's Gallop poll. Hello? Kerry had a 6 point lead over Bush in July 2004. The media's love fest is quickly killing Obama's campaign. (And the TV spots about his racist friend, Rev. Wright, are not even on yet)

Comment: What???s really interesting is the fact Bush who sees himself as Churchill is far more like Hitler, We now live in a country that snatches people off the street, places them in secret prisons and tortures them, At least one of the people who were tortured to death was later found to be nothing more than a tourist, turned in for the cash reward as "suspicious.
We have a country that now spies on its citizens and is above the law claiming a higher purpose.
The fact is these people are nothing but fascists and will tell you to leave the country if you disagree calling you unpatriotic or un-American when the fact is the very opposite.
The truth is the majority of Americans now realizes just what the "compassionate conservatives" really have in store for the US of A and are being rejected,
Eight years ago it was not possible for someone like Obama to have won his parties nomination so the pendulum has swung further than ever before.

And just as Hitler had his supporters so does Bush, trying hard not to lose what Bush has created.

    Comment: UPI NEWS POLL:

Britain, France & Germany Prefer Obama as President, No Surprise there.

    Source: www.upi.com

PRINCETON, N.J., July 23 (UPI) -- British, French and German citizens say they would like to see Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., elected president of the United States, a Gallup poll indicates.

If they could, citizens of the three countries overwhelmingly would elect Obama, the likely Democratic presidential nominee, over his presumptive Republican challenger, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, poll findings released Wednesday indicate. Obama swamped McCain in all three countries -- 60 percent to 15 percent in Britain, 64 percent to 4 percent in France and 62 percent to 10 percent in Germany.

The percentages of respondents saying they didn't know who they'd vote for ranged from 25 percent to 32 percent, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.

Obama is to visit the three countries as part of his ongoing trip to the Middle East and Europe.

Results are based on telephone interviews with randomly selected samples of adults that include interviews with 1,011 adults in Germany, 1,006 adults in France, and 1,001 adults in Britain. The overall margin of error is 3 percentage points.

Comment: Fellow Viet Nam Vets Chime in on John McCain and his so called "Torture" at the hands of the N. Viet Namese !!!

A declassified DOD document reports an interview between POW McCain and Dr. Fernando Barral, a Spanish psychiatrist who was living in Cuba at the time. The interview was published in the Havana Granma in January 1970.

According to the DOD report, the meeting between Barral and McCain (which was photographed by the Vietnamese) took place away from the prison at the office of the Committee for Foreign Cultural Relations in Hanoi. During the meeting, POW McCain sipped coffee and ate oranges and cakes with his interrogator.

While talking with Barral, McCain seriously violated the military Code of Conduct by failing to evade answering questions "to the utmost" of his ability when he, according to the DOD report, helped Barral by answering questions in Spanish, a language McCain had learned in school.

1973 - McCain was released from the Hilton on March 15, 1973.

Two Former POWs Say They Doubt McCain Was Physically Abused

1999 - March 25, 1999, The Phoenix New Times: Ted Guy and Gordon "Swede" Larson, two former POWs, who were McCain's senior ranking officers (SRO's), at the time McCain says he was tortured in solitary confinement, told the New Times that while they could not guarantee that McCain was not physically harmed, they doubted it.

"Between the two of us, it's our belief, and to the best of our knowledge, that no prisoner was beaten or harmed physically in that camp [known as "The Plantation"]," Larson says. ". . . My only contention with the McCain deal is that while he was at The Plantation, to the best of my knowledge and Ted's knowledge, he was not physically abused in any way. No one was in that camp. It was the camp that people were released from."

Big Note: In 1993, during one of his many trips back to Hanoi, McCain asked the Vietnamese not to Make Public the Records they hold Pertaining to Returned U.S. POWs.

Needs to include, a discaimer....maybe something like this......get your virgins NOW...supplies are limited, and shortages sure to occur.... we sure don't want those brave, and heroic, mohammed freedom fighters to get left out. They count on those free virgins.

Comment: HR, it was never about virgins. It was raisins. Golden raisins were very much valued in Mesopotamia hundreds of years ago. Throughout the centuries, writings on the subject mistakenly changed that to virgins. I am serious. A historian friend of mine told me this.

Comment: Sure it was....72 raisins. You might get hungry. And tell your friend, to explain that to the Imam's and Ayatollahs. Better not. They might get beheaded. Bet that part is a mis-translation also, huh.

Pia...you are either very naive (my #1 guess, or you aren't very bright). Islam is the product of a partnership between a pedophile warrior and a fallen Angel. Doesn't matter if you disagree. It is the absolute truth.

Comment: HR, I'm plenty bright! It was raisins! I will call my friend and get info and links to prove this to you.

Comment: Pia....I know you are bright. I have heard the raisan theory before. It is just a ploy, to give the death cult of Islam a better picture. Problem is NO ONE who studies and practices the cult, accept it. The virgin interpretation fits their beliefs better. Women as possesions, and death to anything non-Islamic.

Like I said. I know you are bright. You are however, naive. You must be. You support a CROOK and a FRAUD.

Comment: President Obama: MSNBC???s Howard Fineman wrote July 22, 2008:

[The] American people may be repelled at the sight of a man touring the planet in presidential style who has yet to even be nominated by his own party. There is something a little off about Obamapalooza, even if it is not entirely the candidate???s fault. The self-conscious mimicking of J.F.K. can be cloying or even worse. Kennedy went to Berlin in the midst of a Cold War crisis. To stand at the Brandenburg Gate and declare ???Ich bin ein Berliner??? took enormous guts. Obama has yet to match that fortitude ??? and he hasn???t been chosen president. However quaint it may seem, voters may want a say in that decision.

Comment: Semi-Senile John McCain on the the Bush Administation having Positive Effect on the Lowering of Gas prices, though in Fact it is the (Speculators) that Dictate Price Increase or Reduction. The Speculators are now Worried about the Congress, Senate, IRS and FBI Probing and Prosecuting them, thats why you SEE a Lowering of the Price at the Pump, Not the Bush Threats of Offshore Oil Drillings....Duh !!!

Earlier, campaigning in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., McCain credited the recent $10-a-barrel drop in the price of oil to President Bush's lifting of a presidential ban on offshore drilling, an action he has been advocating in his presidential campaign.

The cost of oil and gasoline is "on everybody's mind in this room," McCain told a town-hall meeting.

He criticized Obama for opposing drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf.

Bush recently lifted the executive order banning offshore drilling that his father put in place in 1990. He also asked Congress to lift its own moratorium on oil exploration on the outer continental shelf which includes coastal waters as close as three miles from shore.

"The price of oil dropped $10 a barrel," said McCain, who argued that the psychology of lifting the ban has affected world markets.

NOTE: The White House didn't go that far. Presidential SpokesWoman Dana Perino said the PRICE DROP also could reflect diminished demand.

"I don't know if we fully deserve the credit," Perino said.

Bush Administration: "We don't PREDICT what HAPPENS in the MARKET," she said. "We can't really tell. Certainly, taking that action would send a signal that at least the executive branch is serious about moving forward and increasing the supply we have in America."

A barrel of light, sweet crude fell $1.86 to $126.56 on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That's down from more than $140 a barrel earlier in the summer. There are 42 gallons in each barrel.

Comment: Semi-Senile, Johh McCain, on the "Surge"

The major Sunni sheik who John McCain said was protected by the surge and subsequently helped lead the Anbar Awakening, was actually assassinated by an al-Qaeda led group in midst of the surge.

On Tuesday evening, McCain falsely claimed that the downturn in violence in Iraq's Anbar province was a result of the surge, when in fact the surge began months afterward. Moreover, he said, if it weren't for the work of U.S. forces, the major Sunni figure leading that awakening wouldn't have had the protection he needed.

"Colonel MacFarland was contacted by one of the major Sunni sheiks," said the Senator. "Because of the surge we were able to go out and protect that sheik and others. And it began the Anbar awakening."

The Arizona Republican's campaign went further the next day, claiming that the major figures that turned around Anbar province would have been killed had the surge policy not been in place. "If Barack Obama had had his way, the Sheiks who started the Awakening would have been murdered at the hands of al Qaeda," said spokesman Tucker Bounds.

Sadly, that murder took place even with the surge underway. In September 2007, Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, the sheik widely credited with persuading Sunni leaders to turn against al Qaeda in Iraq, died in a bomb attack in Anbar. His work, prior to then, was held as a major effort in transforming the province from one of Iraq's deadliest areas into one of its safest.

It was in a September 2006 interview with UPI, when U.S. Army Col. Sean MacFarland first spoke about Sattar's efforts. "Some of the sheikhs have begun to step forward and some of the insurgent groups began to fight against al Qaeda," he said. His reference was Sattar, according to a Reuters article published upon the sheik's death.

Below is more from the Reuters article on Sattar's death:

"When U.S. Army Col. Sean MacFarland, working in his Pentagon office last Thursday, heard that a tribal leader had been killed in Iraq's Anbar province, his first reaction was: "Please don't let it be Sattar."
His fears proved well-founded. A bomb had killed Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, the founder of a movement of Sunni leaders who turned against al Qaeda in Iraq, who are also Sunnis, and transformed Anbar from one of Iraq's deadliest areas into one of its safest.

MacFarland is in a unique position to offer insights into the movement Sattar led and how it may develop without him. As a brigade commander in Iraq, he was present at the alliance's founding and worked closely with Abu Risha for months.

"I owe him a lot," MacFarland said. "He was a young guy with a great vision of the future and he was a fast friend of the United States."

Comment: John McCain seriously violated the Military Code of Conduct by trading "military information" and making numerous public statements that appeared favorable to the communist war effort in exchange for "special treatment."

The Code: Consisting of six articles in simple language, the United States Military Code of Conduct orders American military personnel to resist capture at all cost and if captured; to attempt to escape, to give the enemy no information other than name, rank, serial number and date of birth, to take charge if senior, to obey orders of the seniors, to accept no favors from the enemy and to make no written or oral statements disloyal to the United States.

In the original writing, the Code was declared the definitive code specifying the responsibilities of American military personnel while in combat or captivity.

The Code holds U.S. prisoners of war responsible to protect--at whatever cost--the cause for which the United States stands by continuing to carry on some form of resistance with the enemy. The establishment of the Code of Conduct was the result of what was considered in 1955 an embarrassing high number of U.S. servicemen held prisoner during the Korean War who apparently did little to resist collaborating with the enemy.

Comment: Most of McCain's Injuries were Prior to the "Hanoi Hilton" Something that John McCain's own words cannot help him ....EVADE

    John McCain's Collaborations:

During his 23rd mission over Vietnam on Oct. 26, 1967, Lt. Commander John McCain was shot down by a surface-to-air missile.

To relate the event, McCain later recalled that he was "flying right over the heart of Hanoi in a dive at about 4,500 feet, when a Russian missile the size of a telephone pole came up--the sky was full of them--and blew the right wing off my Skyhawk dive bomber. It went into an inverted, almost straight-down spin. -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

"I pulled the ejection handle, and was knocked unconscious by the force of the ejection--the air speed was about 500 knots. I didn't realize it at the moment, but I had broken my right leg around the knee, my right arm in three places and my left arm. I regained consciousness just before I landed by parachute in a lake right in the center of Hanoi, one they called the Western Lake. My helmet and my oxygen mask had been blown off. "I hit the water and sank to the bottom . . . I did not feel any pain at the time, and I was able to rise to the surface. I took a breath of air and started sinking again." -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

After bobbing up and down, he was eventually pulled from the water by Vietnamese who had swam out to get him.

A mob gathered on shore and McCain was bayoneted in the foot and his shoulder was smashed with a rifle butt. He was put on a truck and taken to Hanoi's main prison.

After being periodically slapped around for "three or four days" by his captors who wanted military information from him, McCain called for an officer on his fourth day of captivity. He told the officer, "O.K., I'll give you military information if you will take me to the hospital." -U.S. News and World Report, May 14, 1973 article written by former POW John McCain

McCain was taken to Gai Lam military hospital normally unavailable to American POWS. (U.S. government documents)

"Demands for military information were accompanied by threats to terminate my medical treatment if I [McCain] did not cooperate. Eventu
