    If you get a call from one of these folks, invoke the FDCPA, where as all communication will be in written format only-this req must be put in writing and mailed to the agency. From that moment forward when this document is rcvd, they cannot call you, your employer, your family or friends. Also request specific proof, not just a statement, but an actual itemized bill with dates, amounts, etc. Most of the folks doing these calls are getting these same calls, so they usually will work with you.

    I find it funny that this article is titled "a new shakedown". It would really be nice to see a new slant on one of these big bad bill collector articles. It's been written to death in one article after another about all the horrible things that collectors do....what about the debtors? Just one time I would like to read about how the vast majority of these debts are valid and how these people are stiffing hard working business owners. An article that mentions the profanity and constant lies that collectors have to deal with would be a welcome change. Contrary to popular belief, most debtors are not innocent victims, they are the cause of many financial problems for all types of businesses

    So the blood sucker have to resort to new tactics. DAMMMED this is just getting to be too much. What was the point of this story? For us to feel sorry for them that they have to resort to new tactics to harass people that most likely are stretched as far as they can go, or to warn the said people that the tactics have changed and for people to be on the look out.

    Who today does not know where to go to get help from to protect themselves from bill collectors? If you are responsible for the debt, do the right thing and get into a program that will help you sort out your money situation. If you haven't or don't want to use debt counseling, then you don't want to protect yourself and you must want to deal with the blood suckers.

    There are all kinds of agencies through churches, government, community services. If you are too dammed stupid to take advantage of these programs, I don't feel sorry for anyone that has these blood suckers on their front doors.

    Zombie debt avoidance tip:

    I had a debt with Montgomery Ward that I incurred in 1996, paid partially in 1998 and finally was removed from my credit report in 2005. Then last year, I started getting harassing calls from a company called WebVan whose employees were of a distinctly Indian origin . . . Essentially, they are just paid harassers as the debt was older than 7 years, and the company went bankrupt in 1998 during the height of the boom years . . .

    The tip is: Prior to identifying yourself to the caller when you suspect a debt collector call, ask them who they are! They can't answer without disclosing to a third party that they are a debt collector and that's the big gotcha!!

    You'll have a lot of conversations like this:

    Debt Collector: I am calling for (insert name here) are you the person with whom I wish to speak?

    You: Who is this?

    DC: Repeat with variation

    You: Who is this?

    Just stick to your guns, eventually the rep will get frustrated and hang up, and eventually they will stop bugging you altogether

    Some of these debt collectors are just absolute idiots. I had the bad luck of getting a phone number when I moved that had just previously belonged to a woman who obviously NEVER paid her bills and still currently doesn't pay them. I've had my number for a over a year and have made valid attempts to tell these bill collectors that this is no longer her number, look me up in the latest white pages, etc. Do they keep calling? You bet and they're the same ones because now I track their numbers. They just don't get that sometimes that dog won't hunt.

      myopinonhere: See my reply to Zinca regarding your legal rights and what you can do about it. Also set up a little hand held voice recorder to your telephone. If you are not in a one party consent to recording state answer each call with the following recorded or stated message;

      THIS CALL WILL BE ELECRONICALLY RECOREDED. BY CONTINUING THIS CONVERSATION YOU ARE GIVING YOUR CONSENT FOR US TO ELECTRONICALLY RECORD THIS AND ALL FUTURE CALLS TO THIS TELEPHONE NUMBER FROM YOU COMPANY. Then just say "hello" in a normal voice and start from there. As what the name of the collection agency is, the name of the person calling, and the purported original debtor. Good luck....................sue the bastards..............it's all they understand..........just like car dealers.

    Wow, Only cure. To see such hateful and bigoted speach here is truely amazing. Was the klan site full and the neo nazi's not want you. I mean if you are going to post such hate filled dribble at least have the brains to post it after an article dealing with Homosexuality. But if you had any brains then you would not be such a hate filled person. Let me guess you probably claim to be Christian as well. Well if that is what your church teaches then I am sure there is a special place in hell for you and your ilk.
