"Given the obvious importance of Pakistan in the region's security, the United States should take heed. It needs to urge the PPP-PML (N) coalition government to set aside their petty differences and focus their attention on the country's burgeoning economic and security problems." Why do you need the US to get involved in everything in this world? Pakistan is a sovereign country and need no foreign intervention in its domestic affairs. The Pakistanis are used to these kinds of tultumous scenario. Please do not paint such a bleak future. It seems that you are more American them the Americans themselves!

    There is noise,
    in and out,
    internal and external stages,
    Pakistan has reached,
at the brink of ecnomic bankruptcy.

    It is doubtless,
    to some extent,
    not completly destryed,
    as they saying.

Would you like to know the reason,
    find millitary dictators,
    in the front line.

    They embezzled,
    made record-breaker foriegn bank accounts,
    they also destryed important institutions,
    and enslaved whole judiciray.

Single super power on the earth,
served them with heap of dollars,
    millions? no in trillons.

The same procedure was adopted by the master'voice,
they were served with huge loan ,
and after short or long interval,
    written off all,
    but arrested those defaulters,
    of Rs.10,000.,
they punished aftermath sold out their houses.

    Be sure,
    God is witness,
    insurgency is not our matter,
we are not responsible to creat it,

Showing the opened door of treasures ,
    dictators were made ally,
to whom all the nation disliked,
    but liked wallpowered states,
because they were ally gainst the war of terrore.

We are standing at the brink of ecnomic destruction,
inspite of it we are still ally.

    It is noteable,
    really noteable,
restoration of democracy is the original will of the people ,
    of Pakistan,
    but you cab see,
a millitary dictator occupied the whole powers,

    According to the servay ,
recently reported by very important quarter,
    crutial majority of country,
have desire reinstatement of the judges of the apex court,
    deposed by an unconstitutional action,
they are still wondering in search of justice,
what is snage in the way of their reinstate?

'' America is great hurdle in the way of retoration of the judges.

    saying a lawyer,
    leading the procession on Friday.

Pakistan was defined as what it is not -- India. Given the otherwise natural affinities of the two countries' peoples, such an artificial difference can only be sustained by fomented conflict. Jammu and Kashmir are but a pretext. Were the issue resolved tomorrow, Pakistan would need another to take its place.

While Pakistan's self-imposed and perpetual state of war benefits the military and elite, it also weakens the state from within. Pakistan is a Muslim homeland, but then what is a Muslim? Much blood has been spilled as Pakistanis try to figure that out. Furthermore, Pakistan as an actual state only exists along the Indian border, because only by proximity to Hindus can Pakistan unify and define itself. In the north and west, Pakistan dissolves into outlaw badlands.

Oddly enough, Pakistan prefers the chaos in its northwestern frontier provinces to what it believes is the only alternatve -- development by India in Afghanistan to create a squeeze play on Pakistan. Thus, the Taliban are the nightmarish brainchild born of the Pakistani leadership's profound lack of imagination. Perpetual destabilization on the Afghan border, with the side benefit of a steady supply of fighters for the proxy war in Kashmir.

Pakistan's problem is that it cannot justify to itself why it exists. It could not justify it to East Pakistan, which -- poof! -- became Bangladesh. As an artificial concoction, it also has nothing to lose. Until and unless it can come to terms with itself, redefine itself, and take responsibility for itself, it will always be the problem child of the nuclear club.

P.S. - Iran should, by far, be the lesser worry. Persia and Persians have existed for thousands of years. They know who they are. With a rich history and deep intellectual traditions, they do have something to lose. They may be difficult, but they will be rational.

Easy answers that Sumit Ganguly offers for Pakistan???s day of reckoning present Western view but are not reality. Fact is Pakistan is caught up in a time warp - it wants to be a eighth century Islamic Sultanate but is pulled into a 21st century democracy. Pakistan has a fundamentalist Islamic society that actually wants to install Islamic Sharia which is an anethema to this day and age. It was by choice that democratic government of Pakistan facilitated relocation of Osama bin Laden from Sudan to Afghanistan in 1996. It was by choice that democratic governments of Pakistan created and nurtured Taliban movement and installed Taliban government in Afghanistan in 1990s.

Declassified US Intelligence Information Report (IIR) dated November 7, 1996 (when Sharif was the prime minister) reiterates how "Pakistan's ISI is heavily involved in Afghanistan," but also details different roles various ISI officers play in Afghanistan. Stating that Pakistan uses sizable numbers of its Pashtun-based Frontier Corps in Taliban-run operations in Afghanistan, the document clarifies that, "these Frontier Corps elements are utilized in command and control; training; and when necessary ??? combat???.

Musharraf continued that policy of support to Taliban as declassified U.S. Department of State, Cable, "Pakistan Support for Taliban," Sept. 26, 2000, makes clear that "while Pakistani support for the Taliban has been long-standing, the magnitude of recent support is unprecedented." In response Washington orders the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad to immediately confront Pakistani officials on the issue and to advise Islamabad that the U.S. has "seen reports that Pakistan is providing the Taliban with materiel, fuel, funding, technical assistance and military advisors. [The Department] also understand[s] that large numbers of Pakistani nationals have recently moved into Afghanistan to fight for the Taliban, apparently with the tacit acquiescence of the Pakistani government." Additional reports indicate that direct Pakistani involvement in Taliban military operations has increased???.

Thus all the Pakistani leaders come from the same Islamic fundamentalist society and hence will continue to lead Pakistan along the same fundamentalist path.

A collapse usually causes a vacuum. Unfortuneately this vacuum may be filled with religious fanatics who would have access to nuclear weapons.

Pakistan is an artificial entity created by Britishers to weaken India. Drawing line in sand doesn't make a country. Urdu speaking western Pakistanis couldn't stand to share power with Bengali speaking Eastern Pakistanis. Result? Bangladesh 24 years after Pakistan was created. But it serves western powers just well - it is a vassal where listening posts for Iran, Russia, China and India can be setup easily because ruling elite of Pakistan can be easily "convinced" to do so.
