In today???s National Review Campaign Spot, Jim Geraghty passes on an important exchange from the July 21, 2008, edition of CNN???s Anderson Cooper 360 between host Anderson Cooper and panelists David Gergen and Gloria Borger about presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who is making a whirlwind tour through Eurasia.

    David Gergen said:

I think it was the first ??? Barack Obama made the first mistake of his trip, in my judgment, in releasing a statement in which he said exactly what Maliki had said in those conversations. We have a long tradition in this country that we only have one president at a time. He???s the commander in chief and the negotiator in chief. I cannot remember a campaign which a rival seeking the presidency has been in a position negotiating a war that???s under way with another party outside the country. I think he leaves himself open to the charge tonight that he???s meddling, that this is not his role, that he can be the critic, but he???s not the negotiator. We have a president who does that. So, I think the underlying facts support him, but I think it would be a real mistake ??? and I think it was a mistake ??? to get into these conversations and let it be used politically.

When Anderson Cooper asked Gloria Borger if she agreed with Gergen, she responded:

You know, it???s very interesting, I do agree with David. And Candy [Crowley], in her earlier piece, talked about walking the fine line between being this candidate and being presumptuous. And I think that he may just have crossed that, because, you know, it is a tradition. You don???t talk about these private conversations. And it???s not up to Barack Obama right now to negotiate troop withdrawals. It???s up to Barack Obama to be on a fact-finding mission, which is indeed what he has said he was on.

    NOBAMA!!!

I think McCain's attempt to "steal Obama's thunder" is evident of the Senator Obama's success in dealing with foreign relations. McCain's camp attempted to goad Obama into going overseas in hope that Obama would make similar gaffes to that of his competitor. Instead, we have seen a shift in policy by the Bush administration and an Iraqi government asserting their independence---that is what the mission was after all, right? So now, Senator McCain's camp would rather play coy with the media in weak attempts to beg for attention rather than earn coverage by discussing real issues. McCain and camp cannot have it both ways; he can???t scream how unfair the media is in their coverage, but yet when given a platform to discuss issues and solutions (still waiting to hear him define victory, and since when is surrender turning the country over to a sovereign nation?), use that time to attack the opponent. The American people are tired of that crap on their televisions and newspapers day in and out; to think otherwise is insulting our intelligence. Even FIX News suggested that the televised town hall meeting was somewhat of a sham, because no real challenges were discussed and much of the audience was selected by the McCain camp. Instead of disingenuously blaming a candidate for gas prices, why not offer solutions, I thought McCain would be better than this, but obviously, the Straight Talk Express has taken a detour and the maverick we once knew is no more.

Obama wants a 21st century Marshal Plan-- according to a USA TODAY puff piece on OBAMA. And the goal is to alleviate world misery because "that can be our best investment in increasing the common security or the entire world."
He is speaking about one VERY HUGE US FEDERAL GOVERNMENT that will be fixing the worlds misery and in it, the common security of the United states will be forfeited as The Dictator at the top envisions world schemes... because that is what dictators do!
Your job in this grand scheme will be shut up, and pay.. and pay.. and pay!
The Martial Plan was expensive! And we never got payed back!

It's called diplomacy. But you sound like you are just for America instead of mankind. The Earth is a continuous land mass. So we as a people need to look beyond the shores of the East and West Coast. I don't think anyone short of a fascist is willing to see anyone lose their lives over propaganda but that's the way things go, just ask Bush.

    • Posted By: cerrojim @ 07/22/2008 12:13:42 PM

No, Obama is not talking about making the federal government bigger or spending more money. He is talking about rearranging priorities. I think our money can be put to better use than bullets, tanks and mindless wars. War on poverty ... lost. War on drugs ... lost. War on terror ... jury out, but no Bin Laden. Why is always a War. Can't we change our fundamental national character from War to Peace?

You are pay, pay, paying now! Are your getting your moneys worth? I think not.

      • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 07/22/2008 1:11:48 PM

IF you were a politician and were going to expand the government excesivly, and spend a lot more money , then the best way to fool the public who might object BE to call it "rearranging priorities." and promise is will bring about peace! Stop global warming... and so on and so on...
        Yah....
        Like that!

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 07/22/2008 12:24:51 PM

Yeah, and the Bush platform was that America was not going to be a country of nation-building. No WMD, uh-oh, whats the reason now....... NATION BUILDING!!!!! We will end up having spent thousands of soldiers lives and a trillion dollars that, by the way, we cant afford, to make Iraq a happy democratic place.

Do you try to be non-objective or is it just a naturally occuring thing for you?

      • Posted By: thehappyamerican @ 07/22/2008 1:01:28 PM

The USA article was not objective Not impartial. Rather it was like an advertisement selling something but disguised as a "news report."
I don't believe you as concerned about the lives of the soldiers as you are pretending. It's clear Obama sees their lives as expendable-- or he would not be blabbing his plans and intentions publicly for the enemy to hear. Obama will fumble and bungle and the war will be compounded.
        He will then blame Republicans.
This is a very small and entirely manipulated candidate. i wish it were not the case.

Mccain is yanking you chain..and rightly so....get over it! For all the horrific bias the media has shown, I say yank their chains and knock all of them off their chairs. If this election is over media matters......I would rate the media now and day a F- and lower if possible. Opinionated and bias journalism has giving the field a bad name. I would not be surprise if this every over-inflated Kiss-A_s displayed of the media over Obama back fires and sends voters to the poll just to send a message.....NOBAMA NOMEDIA NOWAY.

If you really think about, McCain has been getting his just desserts since he did not take advantage when Obama was in a battle with Hillary Clinton. He should have been out there stomping the pavement, it's not Obama's fault that he couldn't effectively manage his campaign when there was no one running against him. Quit blaming everyone else for McCain's shortcomings.

Great con men are never boring, and Obama is one of the greatest. He has run his medicine show and conned many into swallowing his snake oil.

Being a great con man does not make for even a half way good president.

Obama has developed his cult following, and history has shown us where cult leaders take their members. Every great autocrat has has his cult following. I don't want president for life Obama!

    • Posted By: klpemberton @ 07/22/2008 12:34:25 PM

      I agree.

      • Posted By: Cloudosmoke @ 07/22/2008 1:15:17 PM

Is that your argument? A con man? He has solid policy but I guess you have not been listening. If you want to liken leaders taking followers places, then look to the current President as he has taken the country to the brink with high gas prices, unnecessary war in Iraq, dropped ball in Afghanistan, economic downturns over and over again. He was supposed to lead but did not. But I guess you will have a witty reply right?

    • Posted By: klpemberton @ 07/22/2008 12:33:55 PM

      Agreed.

mccain's so boring it hurts -- obama's so silly it hurts -- great choice we have -- i'm voting for nader

    • Posted By: Cloudosmoke @ 07/22/2008 1:10:34 PM

I agree with Pia. Why waste your vote? It seems the more times he tries to enter politics, the more he appears worthless. Maybe is he would throw his support behind Obama, he would be offered a position somewhere say like Minister of Arctic Penguins.

    • Posted By: Pia1981 @ 07/22/2008 10:56:39 AM

McCain is old, old folks tend to be more boring than younger ones. Obama is not silly. Here's what is- throwing away your vote on Nader. You know he won't win.

  • Posted By: klpemberton @ 07/22/2008 12:50:07 PM

For a while, I thought he would for sure pick Romney. But now, I think he may try to appeal to a different group of people by choosing someone of color. Either way, I hope he does announce at least something today, I'm quite tired of the Obama news collectives bombarding us with Obama info as if they are all contributing editors for J-14.

    • Posted By: mrzoid @ 07/22/2008 12:54:48 PM

Well if John McCain wasnt boring as watching beige paint dry on a ranch style home in Boise, Idaho, mabey he would get some press. Im not saying its an even distribution of time on the press, but come on, if you didnt support the man, would you really want to hear him talk?

      • Posted By: klpemberton @ 07/22/2008 12:57:27 PM

I don't support either candidate as of yet. Therefore, I would not want to hear too much from either.

Mearsly: Good thing we have level-headed unbiased bloggers like you to set the record straight.

    • Posted By: Mearsly @ 07/22/2008 12:44:55 PM

Thanks. I appreciate your support, you jerk.

      • Posted By: mrzoid @ 07/22/2008 12:51:15 PM

So you say, "what a disgrace you all are.", yet when someone calls you on your bias you get salty and defensive. Dont be a sore sport.

  • Posted By: Mearsly @ 07/22/2008 12:14:55 PM

McCain is annoyed? Gee, I don't know why. Maybe it's the glaringly obvious favoritism shown for Obamessiah by everyone at Newsweek. You people have the objectivity of paid campaign staff -- stop pretending otherwise. What a disgrace you all are.

  • Posted By: NothingThere @ 07/22/2008 12:07:44 PM

Funny how McCain's camp complains about Obama getting too much media attention, but even when the article is about their candidate, all McCain's supporters can talk about is Obama! What does this suggest to you?

It suggests to me that there isn't very much positive to say about thier candidate, so all that's left is to try to knock down the other guy.
