The republicans had control of Congress from 1994 to 2006. They filibustered from 2006 to present and they've had control of the entire government for the last seven years. Doesn't that tell even the least of the politically smart people something about why gas prices are high? Think people.

Yeah, why didn't the Republicans get to drill offshore in more places in our continental shelf ages ago? Why on earth did they wait until oil prices topped $145/bbl? That is just insane.

It's got nothing to do with Obama and everything to do with the BUSHES, their war in Iraq, their Saudi friends and their many supporters in the oil industry - couldn't be more obvious..

Let see, Big Oil President from Big Oil Family in Big Oil State. Big Oil vice president with millions to gain. The entire economy is goin to hell EXCEPT Big Oil who is making record profits. Big Oil president pushing for even more drilling leases as a final giveaway to his Big Oil buddies.

And this is Obama's fault how?

Sending a message to the world that we will be drilling for oil will most likely drive the price of oil down. Other countries want us to be dependent on their oil and don't want us to drill for our own oil....

We will NEVER be independent from exporting oil -- we consume 25% of the world's oil. We are absolute OIL HOGS. And with China and India getting increasingly industrialized, they too will copy our model and require enormous amounts of the stuff to grow their economies. Too late - the world will run out of petroleum before all this can happen.

At the rate of global consumption, with the growing demand around the world, the old preductions that we have "plenty of oil, to last us 60 years and fuel 65 million households" (American Petroleum Institute ad) are just plain INACCURATE.

Allowing more drilling is only going to push prices down slightly in the short run. Look for those prices to go right back up and continue to rise in the coming years.

If we go to war in Iran, we can count on the price of oil at the pump doubling from what it is today in just a year from the start of the war. The Iranians will make sure they block our supplies, as it's our biggest, most obvious Achilles Heel. Stave off our oil supply and our whole economy will shut down. Forget about nukes, just cut off our oil and you have us on our knees.

Whenever I see crap like this ad I always think the same thing: are you really that dumb, or do you just think I am? I suppose that McCain's "don't know much about economics" statement implies "don't know much about energy", but you'd think he'd have some advisers on staff who would prevent him from taking out an AD proclaiming his ignorance.

How friggin' typical. Clouded truths and bash tactics have completely replaced platforms and policy in American elections. "Swiftboating" is now a verb and an accepted campaign strategy. Conservatives hate liberals and vice versa, and as a result EVERYTHING is a partisan issue. The last time this country was so rigidly divided we ended up fighting a civil war. Is that the eventual result of today's political environment? We've apparently given up on any thought of mutual cooperation and/or communication. (myself included... I used to enjoy debate with my conservative aquaintances.... now it seems I hear the same exact arguments from different people and I often think "if I wanted the opinion of Fox News all I have to do is watch it... don't you ever think for yourself?" when I should be trying to understand what they're saying) Is there a viable solution to this disastrous problem? (I can hear my republican friends' reply when I posed that question to hm last month... "Yeah, there's a solution... Do it my way!" I told him that that was more of an illustration of the problem than a solution to it.
