Mugabe seems to be attempting to set the stage for what he undoubtedly feels will be a righteous exit from power. The fact is that he is already "out of control" in more ways than one and I sense the tension from with in his own ranks. He has raped his country and plunged it to unfathomable depths of poverty and now wishes to just walk away? He is obviously even dumber than he looks and should not under any means be allowed to walk away from the mess he has created. Ist is an all too common pattern...a madman forces his way into power, plunges his country into a deep economic quagmire and then tries to escape his crimes by going into exile when it becomes apparrent that not even his own countrymen want him. This modern day Hitler should not be allowed to leave Zimbabwe and if he does...it should be with a bullet in his brain!

Total Independence, you have blamed all of the problems in Zimbabwe on the west. You have not taken responsibility for anything. You also seem to be in total denial of the failed economy in Zimbabwe. Blaming the west will not solve anything. Quit playing the blame game and do something other than gripe and moan about others creating your problems.

yoda60 what you are saying sounds good however in the us we have "poverty pimps" in africa apparently they have anti colonialist pimps the simple reason being there is a profit to be made from it ,a thousand years hence they will still be spewing the same garbage {and extorting foriegn "aid"} and not one iota of difference will you see

As a somewhat serious student of African affairs I do not and cannot accept the notion that thecontinent's present troubles are tracable to policies and documenets dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. This is not to say that the former colonial powers have tainted African independence and held enough land and access to resources so as to render true economic independence virtually impossible. That having been said, I hold African leadership accountable for much of the continent's distresses. Presidents and thier associated national governing institutions have had the where-with-all to render the offending colonial policies mood by legislation or judicial decision. The capitalist West is surely a viper in the tall African grass; but after 40 years of autonomy (if not inddpendence in the fullest sense of the word), the catalogue of government mismanagement and failed domestic policies grows ever thicker and heavier. That Europeans, with superior arms, a disarming religion, did impose themselves and their racist and exploitative regimes upon Mediterranian and Black Africans alike. Such are the facts of history. It is high time, however, to stop laying blame for every African malady at the feet of the colonials. African leaders should make an honest assessment of their successes and their failures and stop blaming all the continent's woes on the colonial past or the neo-colonial present.

BRITAIN is building a 10-million-pound complex for its embassy in Harare despite the British government's calls for foreign companies operating in Zimbabwe to pull out of the country, The Herald reported on Wednesday.



Chief executive of leading construction group Murray and Roberts, Brian Bruce, recently revealed that his company was contracted nearly 18 months ago to build the complex just outside Harare's central business district.



???It is a completely new facility from scratch, costing 10 million British pounds. Work began about 18 months ago and is pretty close to completion," Bruce said.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Zanu-PF and the two MDC formations on the July 21 has been received as an act of assiduity on the part of the political leadership of Zimbabwe on the one hand and also as an exercise shrouded in dubiety on the other.

The MoU comes at a time when many of our people are beset by intolerance and the polarity that has become synonymous with the political landscape of Zimbabwe in the last nine years. It is an MoU between a ruling party that has become synonymous with liberation and the doctrine of sovereignty and an opposition that has become synonymous with neo-liberalism and the doctrine of liberties and human rights.

In the eyes of the mainstream African public opinion, it is an agreement between a revolutionary liberation movement and a somewhat insidiously pro-Western opposition movement. Yet in the mainstream Western public opinion this is an agreement between a perceived dictatorship and an assumed pro-democracy movement.

Some radicals in Zanu-PF will view this development as an unwary compromise with reactionaries bent on reversing the gains of the hard won independence of Zimbabwe while the radicals in the MDC will maintain that the memorandum is an inadvertent trap of their leadership by a seasoned political party capable of derailing the route and destiny of their party.

This is why Western interference must be fought like an intruding snake. There is simply no room for Western input into this process. It is not welcome, however noble or intended.

The West is very hypocritical when it comes to Africa, Western Governments only interfere with African leaders who oppose their Corporate interests in their respective countries. Why is it that no Western leader is criticizing Omar Bongo of Gabon who has been in power for 40 years????? He is giving them Gabon's oil. the West should stay out of Africa's affair because they pick and choose who to condemn base on that President's policies towards them; they could care less about the citizens.
