Comment: You forgot Pat McCormick. She did it first and she did it best. She was the first to win back to back gold medals in platform and springboard diving -- the double double (the only other person to do this was Greg Louganis). She did it in 1952 Helsinki and again at the 1956 Melbourne games. She gave birth between the games. Her practice regimen was 100 dives a day, 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year. When she became pregnant, she stay in shape by swimming 5 miles a day, almost up until her due date. Just thought you'd like to know.

Comment: TheresaMarye, I agree with you that we should support each other, and all of the nice comments in your second, revised, posting. And, you???re correct in the definition of condition. However, if you were to read ???lauraloco???s??? comments, which are what I was commenting on, you might see that the point I was trying to make goes way beyond the definition of ???medical condition???. I was referring to the rude nature of her statements, and that was my point, though I took a bit too long to get to it. I???m quite shocked that you, who so strongly tells us all, the givers of life, to support each other, would give ???2 points??? to someone (strongskinnymom) who was quite judgmental and critical? A bit contradictory, don???t you think? By the way, it took you two postings and a good number of words, repeated words???, to try to get your point across, how is that different than my ???100??? words? I agree, let???s try to remember that we do not need to tear each other down to build ourselves up, thank you for supporting my original point.

Comment: I think woman that have the easy deliveries, supportive fathers, and no financial burden fail to see the other side. It amazes me to read some of your comments. When I was pregnant I gained 80lbs due to being on bed rest, broke my tail bone and my right hip was dislocated during my delivery. I am a single mother with no help. I work probably about 65 hours every week, and still find time to stay healthy. My son is now 11 but I have always found a way to include my son in my aerobic activities. I feel some moms use their children as excuses to 'let themselves go'. It's called time management, discipline, and hard work. As mothers, we need to remember that we are constant role model s for our kids.

Comment: I am no longer afraid of the effect of Paris and Lindsey... Most of the women speaking here can cause way more damage to our future women. Be happy that these athletes were able to acheive their dreams. And that's just it, it's THEIR dreams, not yours. Take time to focus on what your dreams are, and make it happen. Having my daughter at my grad school graduation while pregnant with my son gave me such a sense of accomplishment. When you acheive things as a parent, it sets an example for your children - They learn by watching you. Make sure you are setting the best example you can.

Comment: Skinnystrongmom - 2 points for saying your peace in less than 100+ words.
Happymom - My daughter was an extra-uterine pregnancy ... THAT is a condition. With all due respect, Miriam Webster's On-Line Dictionary defines "condition", as you attempted to use it, as a usually DEFECTIVE state of health. Pregnancy is neither a disease nor a defective state of health ... it's natural. Check for yourself:

Everyone - As women ... the givers of life, the nurturers ... the Mothers, I hoped we would've learned to support each other by now. We love our children unconditionally and without hesitation yet, put us together with our peers ... other Mothers ... and we readily draw lines and choose sides. A sad commentary, in and of itself. We do not need to tear each other down to build ourselves up. Please, let's try and remember that.

Comment: perhaps the intent of this showcase was to do just that-showcase these amazing moms. It was not intended to be a personal jab at moms who aren't super athletes, but to recognize the amazing accomplishments of these women. In the sporting world, taking time off to have children is not looked kindly upon, however these women have cared more about their families than sport and were willing to take the time off to do just that. What's even more amazing is their physical capacity to jump back into their sport and oftentimes pick up right where they left of. I commend them for their achievements as I read this article in awe.

Comment: hmmm, everyone is sounding very judgemental. Everyones life and demands are very different. Some people dont have a moment to themselves, and not through any doing of their own - it is just their circumstance. Be a little understanding and sensitive to the 'unperfect' life..... I'm sure if everyone had enough time to themselves without the pressures and reality of the real world. We would all be a little healthier. To all you moms with little ones, I'm there with you.....and every year gets a little better as your kids get a little more independant. Our kids are this small only once, we can only do what we can do, and know that there will eventually be more time to commit to ourselves. Keep up the good work everyone! Stop being so mean to each other!

By the way, happymom, my daughter was extra-uterine ... THAT is a medical condition. Miriam Webster's On-Line Dictionary defines condition, as you attempted to use it, as a usually DEFECTIVE state of health (a serious heart condition). Comment: I think everybody has forgotten something very important: they have something most of us regular folks doesn't have: MONEY!!!!!!!!! to pay babysitters, nutritionists, personal trainers to get back in shape, personal coaches to keep or improve their skills, sicologists to help them lift their self esteem after they give birth, etc. etc. etc. I play soccer on fridays and sundays, I coach my team and practice on wednesday and I am part of the organization of a Independent League, I have two kids: one 1-year old learning to walk and talk, and one 7-years old that demand a lot of time and not to forget I WORK and that my friends is easier told than done. Please don't be extremist out there, strongskinny mom is out of bounds and unrespectful not everybody can do everything, DON'T FORGET PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES. Definitly, losing weight is possible and staying in shape is, too. But remember not all the people are built with the same body structure and genetics and will. Going back to super-athletes,there has to be PASSION (and MONEY) to do the things they do, get down to Earth, most of us only have passion without the money, so there is no way we should be comparing us to these people. Just find your passion and do your best .

I know if my mom cared more about her size and less about me, she would look great! but me, I don't even want to think of the kind of kid I would be. and I am eternally greatful to her for caring for me so much, always putting herself second. what if Mary put herself before Jesus? I think the trick is to find a healthy balance between nurturing your kids and putting in a little time for yourself each day. that sound fair?

Comment: You all are crazy *** in my oppinion! I have had two children they are 11 months apart. I used to be the "athlete" and am still working to get my behind into shape. For whoever said that mom's shouldn't use their kids as excuses to let themselves go you are an idiot and obviously have never had children. It's hard work getting back into the shape you were before and the time constraints of having a child at your hip 24/7 is somewhat of an excuse. Obviously they should try to get into some sort of shape for their own good health., but I am so sick of hearing that we as women need to be size 4 that's horse *** in my oppinion. And don't even get me started on you strongskinnymom you are one of the worst, genetics does play a HUGE part in the weight loss procces! It doesn't mean you can't do it but it does make it a hell of a lot harder. For us as women I do think it is critical to show our own superstar self it doesn't have to be in the way we fit in our clothes, how many miles we can run, or how high we can jump. It should be how our kids treat themselves and others. And how they grow and develop. So all of the "the only way is the skinny way" mom's out there get over yourselves and spend more time with your kids!

You're the type of person the medical field feeds off of.

Comment: Dear lauraloco, It's so sad to hear a mother say that she thinks having children is a "disappointment or death sentence" and a "reminder of what you used to be". My son is the best thing that ever happened to me and I would never even think to use such words in relation to him. As far as I'm concerned, he and all children are miracles and wondrous and their lives go far beyond simply "complementing" ones life. Actually, Laura, pregnancy IS a medical condition. Considering your thoughts on motherhood, I understand that maybe your still a very young mother and don't really understand any of this yet, but it is important to try to be informed of the facts if you plan to raise a healthy child. This could explain your emphasis on "9 months of carrying a child", when many people actually looked at it more like an amazing miraculous adventure. Knowing that I was nurturing a life, I didn't just "carry a child" as you coldly felt you did. Laura, there are many more serious, devastating life altering things wrong with America than some overweight people. Again, Laura, you should brush up on these topics. And many of the "fat" people, are not at all lazy, I'll guess that you were lucky enough to not have any health or genetic issues that would contribute to your weight. If you're young, beware dear, what goes around comes around, if not, this brings me to another issue you need to look into. That would be one of the big problems with America, and that would be some of the the nasty, heartless, rude people that just spew comments out without a thought as to how they may make another person feel, and unfortunately, these kind of people tend to raise those kind of people. Lets hope you don't treat your children like that. have a good day dear!! :)

Comment: Personally, I feel that it is a testament to the strength of women that thosethat choose to, can be professional athletes, moms and wives. Please explain the difference between a working mom who has a "comfy desk job" and one who has to meet a contract agreement that states she will be able to physically complete her agreement for a job? Why are we so judgemental of women who choose to be a positive example to their children by eating healthy and staying in good shape? Being a size 4 is a little ridiculous and is a number only, not a way to define yurself. But being healthy enough to huck bales of hay in 1008 heat or play soccer with your kids or run a 5k is something to be proud of. Show our children that we don't have to have diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease or lung cancer. And I speak as a mom of 5 who is 35 and has a strong family history of all of those illnesses and not a symptom of any of those things. I work out every day so that I will be able to play soccer, haul wood (don't live on a farm) and run 5k's with my grandkids!!! That is why I decided to take the time to lose the 60 lbs I needed to lose (and no, I still am not a size 4). And it didn't take a personal trainer, or a nutritionist, or a gym membership. Anyone can do it. you just simply need to decide if you are being selfish or being a good parent.

It's wonderful that these women find the time to compete at this level, but their althetic abilites shouldnt be lost bc of 9 months of carrying a child. That is what is wrong with America. Having children should be complement to our lives not a disappointment and a reminder of what we used to be or how life was before kids. Kudoos to these women. I hope they inspired all the fat, lazy women in our country who use children as an excuse to let themselves go!! :)

    • Posted By: packmom @ 08/01/2008 9:34:09 PM

Comment: Lauraloco- I appreciate the remark that pregnancy is NOT a medical condition. There can be medical condititions that occure during pregnancy, but pregnancy alone is not a medical condtion, contrary to what modern medicine wants us to believe. As far as your other remarks, I also tend to agree, I will never be the eighteen year old "hard body" I was. I have much more important things to do, like play-doh or ring around the rosies. So is it motherhood that reminds us we will never be the same or age? And is that a bad thing? I enjoyed my youth and my marriage pre-kids. But I also enjoy this stage of the game. I also get VERY sick and tired of hearing how hard it is to loose the baby weight. I had three c/s in three years, I am in the same size clothing I was in high school. Loosing weight is always possible. Turn off the TV, for everyone's sake.

Comment: Seriously? You were okay until you began calling mother's of america fat and lazy and full of excuses... that wasn't necessary now was it. There are many things wrong with America and I don't think women who "let themselves go" is the biggest issue, it's more that close minded people such as yourself still exsist in today's society. These athletes are pretty awesome considering they had children during there careers (meaning they continued after child birth)- look at many former NFL or NBA players who have "let themselves go"... Charles Barkley, he's packed on some pounds and didn't have kids. It's not just women and these women do set a great example of what can be achieved even after giving birth, because it does take a toll on ones body.

Comment: Vonetta Flowers, first African American to win gold at the Winter Olympics should have been included. She's an amazing athlete and human being with beautiful twin boys.

Comment: Who cares if Swoopes is a Lesbian? What does that have to do with anything? It is sad to see a person like you take an article that celebrates successful women and instead of appreciating the light that it projects, trying to cast a shadow with information that YOU consider to be negative.

Comment: Liz Lynch McColgan should be included in this list as well, in my humble opinion. I attended college with her and her husband, steeplechaser Peter McColgan, and she was a phenomenal college athlete who eventually melded five children into her lengthy sports career. Want to check her out? Here's a link: http://www.ukathletics.net/supporters/hall-of-fame-athletes/liz-mccolgan/

Comment: Not necesarily the best player (Jessica Mendoza) or even pitcher (Cat Osterman) for The Real America's Team, but certainly the most glamorous one who gets most of the publicity.

Isn't it ironic: Xerox is hoping it can profit by teaching companies how to reduce their printing.
