Wow these women are amazing! They are heros and examples for all women to follow. We shouldn't make excuses for ourselves and beat the odds like these women have. These women have inner strenghth, and we as women naturally have that inner strength. Like these women we shouldn't let life or anything get in our way of what we love doing; there are trully possibilities not impossibility. Let's all be strong and teach our children that anything is possible like these women have. I for one am going to do the same.

You forgot Pat McCormick. She did it first and she did it best. She was the first to win back to back gold medals in platform and springboard diving -- the double double (the only other person to do this was Greg Louganis). She did it in 1952 Helsinki and again at the 1956 Melbourne games. She gave birth between the games. Her practice regimen was 100 dives a day, 6 days a week, 52 weeks a year. When she became pregnant, she stay in shape by swimming 5 miles a day, almost up until her due date. Just thought you'd like to know.

TheresaMarye, I agree with you that we should support each other, and all of the nice comments in your second, revised, posting. And, you???re correct in the definition of condition. However, if you were to read ???lauraloco???s??? comments, which are what I was commenting on, you might see that the point I was trying to make goes way beyond the definition of ???medical condition???. I was referring to the rude nature of her statements, and that was my point, though I took a bit too long to get to it. I???m quite shocked that you, who so strongly tells us all, the givers of life, to support each other, would give ???2 points??? to someone (strongskinnymom) who was quite judgmental and critical? A bit contradictory, don???t you think? By the way, it took you two postings and a good number of words, repeated words???, to try to get your point across, how is that different than my ???100??? words? I agree, let???s try to remember that we do not need to tear each other down to build ourselves up, thank you for supporting my original point.

It is no wonder the English language is losing its' majesty. It is being helped along the way enormously by publications such as Newsweek. Re: "Dara Torres: As if the being...?"

hmmmm.... what if mary put herself before jesus? well apparently mary wasn't getting laid so there was a little less pressure on her to whip herself back into shape

    • Posted By: Tall_Blondie01 @ 08/02/2008 1:35:28 AM

What if thunder8 put himself/herself before others? What if thunder8 would teach himself/herself to be a person with morals or values? Would the world be a better place? Well, apparently thunder8 didn't have enough knowledge to do either one, so he/she lived a pathetic, single, worthless life. The end!

happymom, you sound like a depressed, god-fearing, fat, unhealthy woman whose only purpose in life is her children and who doesn't know what it takes to be a strong and healthy individual while simultaneously being able to raise strong, healthy kids without using magical miracle thinking and genetics as excuses for your weaknesses and lack of will power. You're the type of person the medical field feeds off of.

    • Posted By: Tall_Blondie01 @ 08/02/2008 1:29:50 AM

strongskinnymom, no where in happymom's comment does it say she is fat or unhealthy. She likes to put her kids first in life, thats a good thing!! Kids should be put first, they are the future in this cruel, unforgiving world we live in! You are one stupid individual, obviously. I think you are too consumed with the word skinny, maybe thats why you had to put it in your name! Go out and get some sense, then come back and post something worth reading, ok..thanks!

supermom19 i sure hope your not using your kids as an excuse to let yourself go cuz if you are that would be very dissapointing, you owe it to your husband and your kids to get to a size 4 so bust your butt!

    • Posted By: Tall_Blondie01 @ 08/02/2008 1:09:35 AM

Thunder8 most certainly has to be a pathetic man, or just a stupid woman! How could you say that supermom19 "you owe it to your husband and kids to get to a size 4", she doesn't owe them anything, other than to love them. I think you need to find some common sense!!!!! If you are going to post stupid comments that have no substance stay off the internet!

To Once you try to deceive - When men can carry a baby 40 weeks, deliver the baby, and come back to championship form, maybe an article will be done on THEM!

Personally, I feel that it is a testament to the strength of women that thosethat choose to, can be professional athletes, moms and wives. Please explain the difference between a working mom who has a "comfy desk job" and one who has to meet a contract agreement that states she will be able to physically complete her agreement for a job? Why are we so judgemental of women who choose to be a positive example to their children by eating healthy and staying in good shape? Being a size 4 is a little ridiculous and is a number only, not a way to define yurself. But being healthy enough to huck bales of hay in 1008 heat or play soccer with your kids or run a 5k is something to be proud of. Show our children that we don't have to have diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease or lung cancer. And I speak as a mom of 5 who is 35 and has a strong family history of all of those illnesses and not a symptom of any of those things. I work out every day so that I will be able to play soccer, haul wood (don't live on a farm) and run 5k's with my grandkids!!! That is why I decided to take the time to lose the 60 lbs I needed to lose (and no, I still am not a size 4). And it didn't take a personal trainer, or a nutritionist, or a gym membership. Anyone can do it. you just simply need to decide if you are being selfish or being a good parent.

I think woman that have the easy deliveries, supportive fathers, and no financial burden fail to see the other side. It amazes me to read some of your comments. When I was pregnant I gained 80lbs due to being on bed rest, broke my tail bone and my right hip was dislocated during my delivery. I am a single mother with no help. I work probably about 65 hours every week, and still find time to stay healthy. My son is now 11 but I have always found a way to include my son in my aerobic activities. I feel some moms use their children as excuses to 'let themselves go'. It's called time management, discipline, and hard work. As mothers, we need to remember that we are constant role model s for our kids.

I am no longer afraid of the effect of Paris and Lindsey... Most of the women speaking here can cause way more damage to our future women. Be happy that these athletes were able to acheive their dreams. And that's just it, it's THEIR dreams, not yours. Take time to focus on what your dreams are, and make it happen. Having my daughter at my grad school graduation while pregnant with my son gave me such a sense of accomplishment. When you acheive things as a parent, it sets an example for your children - They learn by watching you. Make sure you are setting the best example you can.

I think everybody has forgotten something very important: they have something most of us regular folks doesn't have: MONEY!!!!!!!!! to pay babysitters, nutritionists, personal trainers to get back in shape, personal coaches to keep or improve their skills, sicologists to help them lift their self esteem after they give birth, etc. etc. etc. I play soccer on fridays and sundays, I coach my team and practice on wednesday and I am part of the organization of a Independent League, I have two kids: one 1-year old learning to walk and talk, and one 7-years old that demand a lot of time and not to forget I WORK and that my friends is easier told than done. Please don't be extremist out there, strongskinny mom is out of bounds and unrespectful not everybody can do everything, DON'T FORGET PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCES. Definitly, losing weight is possible and staying in shape is, too. But remember not all the people are built with the same body structure and genetics and will. Going back to super-athletes,there has to be PASSION (and MONEY) to do the things they do, get down to Earth, most of us only have passion without the money, so there is no way we should be comparing us to these people. Just find your passion and do your best .

Money to do these things is a BIG issue!!! I am a farmer and I get a lot of excersise but I cant be running to a personal trainer or a gym every other day!!!! It might not be enough ont he farm but we feed every one else in this country and hate to be picked on because I might be 10 plds heavier than you town people that have those cushy desk jobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Unload hay in 100 degree heat and tell me how you feel after 8 hours???

Skinnystrongmom - 2 points for saying your peace in less than 100+ words.
Happymom - My daughter was an extra-uterine pregnancy ... THAT is a condition. With all due respect, Miriam Webster's On-Line Dictionary defines "condition", as you attempted to use it, as a usually DEFECTIVE state of health. Pregnancy is neither a disease nor a defective state of health ... it's natural. Check for yourself:
    http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/condition
Everyone - As women ... the givers of life, the nurturers ... the Mothers, I hoped we would've learned to support each other by now. We love our children unconditionally and without hesitation yet, put us together with our peers ... other Mothers ... and we readily draw lines and choose sides. A sad commentary, in and of itself. We do not need to tear each other down to build ourselves up. Please, let's try and remember that.

perhaps the intent of this showcase was to do just that-showcase these amazing moms. It was not intended to be a personal jab at moms who aren't super athletes, but to recognize the amazing accomplishments of these women. In the sporting world, taking time off to have children is not looked kindly upon, however these women have cared more about their families than sport and were willing to take the time off to do just that. What's even more amazing is their physical capacity to jump back into their sport and oftentimes pick up right where they left of. I commend them for their achievements as I read this article in awe.

time? What % of the pop can pull this off? Time with kids is not issue! I have mine and fitness gets scheduled around them. It can be done. Lets go beat a couple of dead dogs. If you want to get out and work it you find a balance. Dara, take your 41 year ass and kick the worlds!

hmmm, everyone is sounding very judgemental. Everyones life and demands are very different. Some people dont have a moment to themselves, and not through any doing of their own - it is just their circumstance. Be a little understanding and sensitive to the 'unperfect' life..... I'm sure if everyone had enough time to themselves without the pressures and reality of the real world. We would all be a little healthier. To all you moms with little ones, I'm there with you.....and every year gets a little better as your kids get a little more independant. Our kids are this small only once, we can only do what we can do, and know that there will eventually be more time to commit to ourselves. Keep up the good work everyone! Stop being so mean to each other!
