OHHH but if Obama had said he would give 300 million for an invention Newsweek would have made it sound like he had just invented "sliced bread". Even your so called unbiased interviews with McCain show your disdain for him and his ideas.
Face it Newsweek, you will say and do anything to make your "God Golden Boy" Obama look good at the expense of McCain.

    This Hollywood rag is pathetic!!

Obama would not have done it - it's too much of a gimmick and it would obviously go to a major corporation as that would be the only type of entity that could possibly have the resources and the R&D funding to spend on such an endeavor. In essence, it's a giveaway to Exxon Mobil or some big electronics firm.

Sure we kn ow ye, Johnny, and we don't trust ye as far as we can throw ye with the fate of the country. If Barack Obama were white, you'd be trailing by 35 or 40 points but there are too many people afraid of electing even the most superbly prepared person of color.

I actually loved it when Barack answered a reporter about McCain being negative about his trip. Barack calmly answered that McCain had been telling him to go and that he was disappointed in his not keeping his word to run an honorable campaign.
Barack does not need to yell or get tough. All he needs to do is stay calm and be disappointed in McCain. That makes McCain look really dumb and desperate. Reacting in a loud way and angry way just turns it into a fight and then people take sides instead of backing off and showing people how silly McCain looks with calm reason. Obama conducts himself with dignity, I watched him talking to the press outside Number 10 and he didn't get riled or upset when the reporters fed him what McCain had been saying. He is such a stark contrast to McCain. Obama is a true gentleman. A real man

I agree - the admirable restraint that Obama has is that he does not lose his cool. He takes the time to make thoughtful responses.

McCain on the other hand starts to sputter and stutter and spout a bunch of nonsense. He keeps repeating phrases as if we are all stupid and deaf. I wonder if he thinks if he keeps saying "because I've done this", "because I know him", "surge, surge, surge" that we will believe him.

I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt about the little flubs about Czech Republic and Afganistan vs Iraq border. I mean it must be hard to keep track of being in the limelight and in front of the cameras - but come on where is his vaunted experience now? He keeps saying he is experienced - apparently not at communicating his strategy clearly.

      OBAMA in '08!!

That referred to an ABCNews.com posting asserting that McCain appeared to confuse Iraq and Afghanistan in a Good Morning America interview with ABC Diane Sawyer, who asked whether the the situation in Afghanistan is precarious and urgent.
McCain responded: I'm afraid its a very hard struggle, particularly given the situation on the Iraq/Pakistan border. The ABC posting added: Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border. Afghanistan and Pakistan do.

Unfortunately for McCain, that wasnt an isolated slip. Among the other lapses
Somalia for Sudan: As recounted in a reporter pool report from McCain Straight Talk Express bus on June 30, the senator said while discussing Darfur, a region of Sudan How can we bring pressure on the government of Somalia?
Senior adviser Mark Salter corrected him Sudan
Germany for Russia: from last year memorializes McCain referring to Vladimir Putin of Russia following a trip to Germany as President Putin of Germany.By the way Germans, never have a President only Chancellor
This spring, McCain said troops in Iraq were down to pre-surge levels when in fact there were 20,000 more troops than when the surge policy began.
Also this spring, McCain twice appeared to mistake Sunnis and Shiites, two branches of Islam that split violently even before saddam days.

In Phoenix earlier this month, McCain referred to Czechoslovakia, which has been divided since Jan. 1, 1993, into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. He also referred to Czechoslovakia during a debate in November and a radio show in April.

In perhaps the most curious incident, McCain said earlier this month that as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, he had tried to confuse his captors by giving the names of Pittsburgh Steelers starting players when asked to identify his squadron mates. McCain has told the story many times over the years but always correctly referred to the names he gave as members of the Green Bay Packers.

McCain's argument that his decades of foreign policy experience make him the natural choice to lead a country at war with terrorists.,MCCain said,Iranian operatives "taking al-Qaeda into Iran, training them and sending them back.", A few moments later, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, standing just behind McCain, stepped forward and whispered in the presidential candidate's ear. McCain then said: I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda. When Actually McCain KNOWS NUT about terrorist. operatives and his knowledge of foreign policy

McCain made the incorrect statement during a press conference with Defense Minister Ehud Barak ,McCain made an incorrect reference about the Jewish holiday Purim by calling the holiday of Halloween here.Lieberman had a chance to speak at the press conference, he placed the blame of the mistake on himself.

"I had a brief exchange with one of the mothers whose children was in there in a costume for Purim," Lieberman, who is Jewish and celebrates the holiday, said. "And it's my fault that I said to Senator McCain that this is the Israeli version of Halloween.WTF When the Jewish people DONT even celebrate Christmas.Liberman need to cover McCain and takes the blame of John MCain stupidity.

If Wants to continue,I can make a book of this "President of United Fools" The World is laughing at senile old John McCain candidacy. He fits the Bill perfectly.

John McFake said, " ...at a town-hall meeting I've never had a person stand up and say, "Hey, Senator McCain, you've made a gaffe."

his is also because he picks the crowd for his town hall meetings,

BUT like most things McFake says you will not get the full story from McFake.

I understand that areas for off-shore drilling have already been designated for drilling but the oil company's are not drilling in them places. WHY? Let them drill in the places already given to them or else tell us why they won't drill there before we give them more places to drill.

    • Posted By: jarcher1 @ 07/27/2008 7:30:22 PM

Hmmmm, its really pretty simple. Oil companies are businesses, they have to make a profit or they cease to exist. Specifically areas already designated may have been seismically explored and found to contain nothing worth drilling for. If they have not been seismically explored, its just not good practice to go around punching random holes, deep water rigs are ferociously expensive. I would guess the day rate for outershelf equipment is around $200,000.

Does anyone really want either of these two charlatans to be the PotUS?
Like herding sheep, the media and political and corporate systems in this country have directed us to this choice: Tweedledum and Tweedledee. These are not leaders, nor are they representitives of the people of the US. They are career politicos with their own agenda, and they each hope that the American Public will fall for their sales pitch.

Everybody needs to move beyond complaining about who is getting the most coverage or the best coverage. This is a competition and some days the focus will be on Obama, other days it will be on McCain. Neither one of them should expect to be the center of attention all the time, nor should they complain when they are not. It is a little baffling to me that McCain has spent so much time talking about this subject. If he wants to be seen as being Presidential, he needs to stop gripping about it and just get on with the campaign. Do or say something news worthy and it will be reported!

    • Posted By: summer1216 @ 07/27/2008 6:15:57 PM

I agree. If you are dull and also say very little interesting, the new media (which is much more fragmented than it used to be) is not obliged to cover you. They look for things that will grab the attention of their readers. They are not sitting in their back rooms with their little calculators trying to be sure they give even coverage to everyone who wants it.

  • Posted By: Loden Green @ 07/27/2008 1:16:21 PM

Hey, Newsweek, just keep lobbing those softball questions at ol' John. The media's love for this guy is ridiculous (especially since it falsely tries to portray Obama as the media's darling).

    • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/27/2008 1:41:09 PM

Ask yourself this question, how many Obama 08 ads do you see on Newsweek? How many McCain 08 ads do you see on Newsweek?

      • Posted By: Heartlight3 @ 07/27/2008 2:19:38 PM

That is more a function of who has the money to buy the ads than any indication of bias.

        • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/27/2008 5:38:05 PM

I'll give you that but I don't buy it 100%. Well then look at all the Pro Obama pieces on Newsweek compared to the Pro McCain pieces. I don't think anyone would argue that Alter isn't in the bag for Obama or Clift.

  • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/27/2008 7:01:38 AM

Ha ha all you Obama bloggers out there are scared so you have to attack McCain.
When someone criticizes Obama it's a "smear." But when you attack McCain it's a "fact." You Obamabots are lame...

At least McCain never dissed the troops to go shopping in Paris.

    • Posted By: raddave @ 07/27/2008 1:04:06 PM

McCain only "dissed" the troops by not even bothering to show up and voting on the new GI Bill. He "dissed" the troops when he didn't even bothering to show up and voting on the Defense authorization bill in January to provide a 3.5% pay raise to the military, allows veterans with 100% disabilities to collect both their retirement pay and disability pay, and provide $187.4 billion for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

      • Posted By: Zombiehero @ 07/27/2008 1:40:30 PM

And Obama voted NO to give troops armor and ammo to defend themselves.....

McCain voted no, because he want to increase retention in the Military and backs a measure to tie GI Bill scholarships to time in service....the longer you serve the more money you get and a measure to give wounded vets, the kind Obama doesn't seem to want to meet, scholarship and retraining opportunities automatically no matter how long they served.

It's Barry you need to watch out for...he wants to increase the military, and create an "equal" civilian defense force. Of course he hasn't given any details....what a shock coming from Barry, but what the hell is that...he wants to create a Civilian Militia equal to the size of the Armed Forces? Oh yeah how is he going to pay for it?

McCain wants to revamp Walter Reed to get it back to its previous high standards and he wants to increase funding for mental health care at Walter Reed......Sorry my money is still on McCain.

        • Posted By: raddave @ 07/27/2008 5:02:58 PM

The GI Bill is not a retention incentive, it is a veteran benefit. Soldiers do not need to use the GI bill while on active duty because we have Tuition assistance that pays 100% tuittion for us to go to college.

If McCain wants to get Walter Reed back to it "previous high standards", then why did he also vote against increasing funds for military health care?

Obama doesn't want to create a "civilian militia" equal to the size of the Armed forces. He does want to create a Civilian Assistance Corps of 25,000. Full of specialist (Doctors, Lawyers, etc..) To assist the Government in Times of crisis.

We know you, and we don't want you.

I can't believe how many delusional Obamatrons are out there. Growing up in a single parent household and graduating from Harvard does NOT qualify you for the presidency. Barack Obama is just a product of clever marketing to young people. The silent majority of Americans who actually show up on polling day won't buy into his hopey-changey BS.

  • Posted By: Botprof @ 07/27/2008 3:48:16 PM

The six or seven answers given by John McCain were awfully close to a complete blank. His defense for drilling offshore vs. drilling in the arctic was complete nonsense. And the comments about what constitutes torture were even worse. None of these answers provided any understanding of what McCain really thinks about regarding these questions.

  • Posted By: Trek @ 07/27/2008 3:45:33 PM

McCain is out of touch with what the majority of American people want from their President, and this is why he will lose the election. While as a vet, I certainly honor the Senator's service to our country, we cannot afford another Bush like President!

  • Posted By: bkleinman @ 07/27/2008 3:09:35 PM

Don't reporters ask follow-up questions anymore? The rest of the world gets this right: the BBC, for example, will often challenge politicians (and generals, CEO's, and activists) with contradictory facts or troubling perspectives. Are american reporters lazy or incompetent?

  • Posted By: tiredoflies @ 07/27/2008 2:48:18 PM

I respectfully disagree. People do NOT know the real John McCain, but they are beginning to.

This is NOT the McCain of 2000. This is a totally different McCain who is pandering to his base and whoever he has to for votes.

I am a resident from Arizona. This man has done nothing I can recall as helpful to anyone here including veterans. McCain is NOT SO PRO VETERAN as people assume. He has hid this very well. Check the record of his votes. The latest was the bill sponsored by Senator Webb and others for educational benefits for returning veterans. People ASSUME because he was a POW he is for veterans. The record proves different.

He does not know so much about war as he says. Folks, HE WAS A POW and that deserves respect but IT DOES NOT MAKE HIM AND EXPERT. He held no field commands. He was a glamour boy that flew airplanes. DO NOT ASSUME that makes him an expert in anything. Field commands do that.

Do NOT assume just because he has been in the Senate forever that makes him so knowledgeable. Ask why he could NOT achieve more than he has before the age of 71 with a POW background. Its because he just does not have it.

Listen to him carefully. Any rational, open minded, unbiased and non racial person would have to agree he is really lacking in so many ways. The so called "surge* is the only thing he has been even close to right on and then he fails to consider "political achievments" in his assessment of its success.

It is unfortunate that John McCain, a man who deserves a nation's respect as a POW is a man without vision oriented only toward violence in solving our future problems.

HE IS WAR IN IRAN WAITING TO HAPPEN.

Maybe, but they can not make up court records.

  • Posted By: befair @ 07/27/2008 2:35:17 PM

Some of us know John McCain better than he would like us to. He favors lifting a ban on off shore drilling and he and his counter-part George Bush have begun to blame the current oil situation on the Democratic Congress. They point to Dem. efforts to protect environmentally sensitive areas. They do not however point out the fact that energy companies have declined to drill on some 68 million acres on land they currently have leased in the United States. It makes McCain and bush look better to conservatives , to blame it all on Democrats. As for his gaffes and mis-statements, only a total fool would accept his notion that these gaffes are not gaffes at all, but that his statements are being misquoted or in his words are protrayed as gaffes. It should make voters less than excited about having a president who does not even realize when he is wrong or worse knows he is wrong but would rather play word games and make excuses for his flaws. Also, anyone can mis-speak we all do that but when you get important details wrong time and time again, then people should rightly be allowed to point it out.

  • Posted By: mart7lin @ 07/27/2008 1:43:35 PM

Unfortunately, McCain's 26 year record does not support his statement that he has a clear record or vision on women's issues.
