So questions: what happens to the creatures AFTER their economically useful life-span? Back to the pound? Sold at a discount? Half-price specials? "Humanely put down" ? Do they have 'coverage' like rental cars, for damages caused to objects? Potential loss, demise, or foul-play? What if a brat smacks it and gets bitten? "Intial here, and here, and HERE!" Do you have to bring them back with a full tummy?
Not sure about the whole idea - hey - question: Can I rent well-behaved children somewhere? They might go great with a garden-party. Or maybe I'll just get a clown with pointy teeth... hmmm. Can you get those?

Middleclsmom you???re a fool and not an animal lover. How can you "lend" your family member out for money? Do you rent your kids and husband out for money? It???s a shame people like you even have animals. Pets bond and join the pack they are with and this shuffling around is bad for the animals. Why cant people that are money hungry see this goes against the instincts of the animal?

I agrr that animals are NOT DVD's. No matter what type of animal...no one deserves this treetment. If this were kids being rented by the day, we would scream that it's exploitation . What makes it different for animals. If you want to spend time with animals and don't want to adopt....just spend time as a volunteer at a local shelter. Whoops!!!I'm sorry thhat might take up some of your precious free time. EXCUSSSSSSSSSEEEEE MEEEE!

I agree! We know that bounching children from foster family to foster family can have serious long-term implications for attachment, why do we assume animals are any different?
Besides, I highly doubt they are "renting" out dogs that otherwise would have been euthanized by shelters. I am sure they are picking adorable puppies, handsome designer dogs, and are not renting out the large black dogs (that are harder to adopt out), the scruffy, shy dogs, or the "over-the-hill" dogs over the age of 7. What's next people, renting children???

Funny, I thought about starting a pet rental business a few years back. I thought it would serve people who love pets but are unable to own a pet. Unfortunately, I was not able to develop a business model that would be profitable. I doubt FlexPets is making an obscene amount of money. I am sure they are animal lovers an undeserving of this.

As far as Animal Shelters are concerned, they are full of Pit Bulls that are very hard to handle. Also, it is emotionally exhausting to drop a dog back off at the shelter. If you have a heart and bond with animals it is much easier to leave them in the hands of people you trust.

What a waste of our lawmakers time and tax payers money....

What about the consistency of a home for the Pet??? 'Depreciating' each dog with an estimated seven year 'useful' life??? Pets should be considered/treated like family members - not cars!

What is the diffrence in renting a dog for an hour and going out and renting a horse to ride. Is the Horse being miss treated because they have multi-riders (sometimes a day). No I dont think so and as long as the dogs are being taken care of where they live each day then why shouldn't this company grow and expand?

Agree totally- Hey! are the mules in the Grande Canyon have psychological problems from all those tourist?!

I know my dog would love to spend the dau showered with attention and extra walks. The fact is, I'm at work 5 days a week and she is home alone. If anyone wanted to pay me to sit with her, I'd jump at the chance and so would she!. I think it is numbingly ignorant the way that these politicians and "ethical watchdogs" jump on an issue. People have been renting horses for pleasure rides and to learn how to ride for years and years! I think this is a practice that could cause more potention problems then renting a dog.

I think it is a selfish practice as it ignores the stability an animal needs because people can't commit to owning an animal fulltime. I agree with another comment made that maybe these people should volunteer at a shelter if they want to spend time with an animal.

Disgusting and stupid! Not only can you go to a local animal shelter and spend all the time you want with TONS of dogs and cats for FREE... but also, what kind of damage does this do to the poor dogs who are forced to endure confusing blocks of time with different people? Marlina Cervantes for whatever her name is should focus her energy on finding legitimate, PERMANENT homes for homeless animals, not profiting off of their plight.

I'm sorry, but I just can't get over this neurologist paying that kind of money to "rent" a dog. YOU CAN SPEND AS MUCH TIME AS YOU WANT WITH SHELTER ANIMALS FOR FREE... or volunteer your time at a local animal shelter actually HELPING animals, not screwing them up for your own selfish good! Stop paying some dispicable low-life who profits off the suffering of homeless animals who disguises herself as doing something good. Whatever. Their facilities could be as bad as puppy mills and we would never know.

Instead of "renting" a dog or cat or other animal. Why don't these people just go to the animal shelter. Clean up after the pet and give it some love before it's euthanized.

What's next? Rent-a-Child, infant, etc? Very bad idea.

From experience, I know the following is just better for your wallet, and better for society (humans and dogs alike):
Call your local shelter and ask if they have a program to give dogs "time to socialize with humans": Shelters love it because it makes their dogs less likely to become "kennel crazy" (unadoptable), and it's good for society (so long as you know how to treat dogs decently) because dogs are much less likely to develop habits harmful or annoying to people (again making them unadoptable) so long as they have mostly positive contacts with people, from the time they are puppies. Shelters are very unlikely to burden you with a dog that's already unadoptabe (for liability purposes), they leave those dogs to a professional trainer (or euthanasia). I just hope this yuppie "rent-a-dog" place evaluates each dog using a professional trainer before letting that dog have contact with the general public. Every shelter I've seen does...

I would also just hope the yuppie "rent-a-dog" place also gets their dogs from shelters instead of puppy-mills or breeder contributing to pet-overpopulation, and otherwise I see no problem with it...except that you're a fool to pay for "flex-time with a pet" if your local shelter provides it for free.

Most shelters have a program well-established to STREAMLINE the volunteering process for you and to work around whatever your schedule is. Or if you don't have a fenced yard but wanna play with a large dog outside, then you (optionally with your human friends) can use the shelter's dog-runs for example. Another option is even overnight "fostering" in your house -- weekends-only or whatever fits into your schedule -- was a quick and easy option at most shelters in the 4 states I've lived in. Also, now that I've settled down and adopted 2 dogs permanently, I gave them the training that woulda cost me $400 if I went to a pro trainer's group classes, for just for the BASIC training... instead MY DOGS ARE LEVEL-2 SCHUTZHUNDS AND FOR FREE. HOW? When I moved state-to-state and didn't have time to adopt a dog but wanted time playing with them, I offered to help a trainer at one of the shelters instead of going to some yuppie "rent-a-dog" place; he trained me to train dogs...for free!
Whether you just want to pet them, have them fetch your beers, or have a service-dog...

There's NO REASON you should let anyone parasitically take your money for the "privelege" of having "flex-time with a pet" when your local shelter probably offers it to you for free!

You hit it right on the money Lady Professor! I work at a rescue and we need so many volunteers and it's such a good way to learn proper dog handling techniques and behavior patterns in dogs. Another option could even be to foster pets, which shelters are in dire need of as well. I am amazed at what people come up with to make a buck.

PETA needs to demonstrate in India against the use of elephants as draft animals; in Africa against the use of oxen; in china against the use of water buffalo. Then they can start n the nonsensical stupidity they worry about in the U.S.
This is the kind of organization that can only parasitize a wealthy society.
