It's amazing that it is acceptable to do this to our most precious asset, the children of our society, but not animals. The agencies in this nation shuttle kids through multiple foster homes and no one raises a voice.

I think it's more sad that people have kids they can't take care of in the first place.
There are foster programs for animals too, that is way different than this "rent a pet." People foster animals to get them ready to be adopted into a forever home. Most of the time, these animals need to be socialized to a home before they can be adopted out, sad but same as true for children who did not have proper care. No one RENTS a child to take to the park, that would be creepy! I see rent a pet just as creepy!
Then what do you call those organizations that have an adult volenteer to be a big brother / big sister for a day or a weekend ??
And for that matter what about neighborhood dog walkrs?...Is my pet going to have an emotional break down if 2 different people walk my dog in the same week ?
People send their CHILDREN to daycare/school...not knowing any of the people their either!!!!!!!
Thanks shoegirl. That exactly the kind of point I've been trying to make.
Have either of you raised a voice?
People here like to anthropamorphize these animals so think of it this way. You're in a cell on death row and someone wants to pay the jail money to take you home and hang out for a few days. Are you going to say no? Even if you end up back in your cell, it's a heck of a lot better than dead earlier than need be.
I don't know who I think is sicker - the person who would make money off this enterprise or the person who would rent-a-pet. Get a pet rock if you can't take care of an animal. The only reason these people want to have a short-term commitment with an animal is to impress people. If they really want to spend time with an animal out of love for animals, let them volunteer at a shelter. Many of those animals would love ANY kind of attention - being brushed, petted, walked - whatever. Okay, maybe they aren't 'designer' animals, but if the reason you want to spend time with an animal is because of your love for animals, do it for the animal, not yourself.
You people are freaking WEIRD! Why don't you rent a spouse or children for an event you want to 'look good' at? It is the same thing - pure VANITY!
kj76 is an animal hater
Nope. What I am is a people lover. I love people so much that I can't stand to see them reduced to the same level as animals. That's what you people don't realize when you compare animals and people: you don't evelvate the value of the animal, you reduce the value of the person.
We all have our "passions". Mine is animals, maybe yours is kids or the elderly so to put down somebody for thinking rent a pet is deplorable is unfair. Just because we don't condemn the foster system doesn't mean we think it's right. It's not but I'll leave that battle to those with a passion for children.
Agreed; but in the end, shouldn't our main passion be helping people?
kj76 is a realist, not an animal hater.
morgan15 is clueless, and unfit for pet ownership.
Shelter animals don't smell as nice. That's a JOKE, for all you sensitive animal-rights folks. On a serious note though, these animals are likely well-groomed and well-trained. Who is going to take a shelter dog with unpredictable public behaviors to the dog park, or jogging or to a friend's home? I'm not saying shelter dogs don't need love and shelters don't need volunteers (I have fostered, volunteered and eventually adopted two shelter animals), but the type of people who are able to afford to rent dogs at that rate more likely than not want the "best in show" type animals.
Additionally, horses are leased for months and even hour-long trail rides, but there is no legislation in place to protect them. Why not? Becase every society values different animals in different ways. Here, cows are fodder for our McDonald's-greedy tummies - in India they are sacred. In certain Asian provinces, our furry "man's best friends" are a delicacy.
Why not regulatory legislation - setting up some guidelines these sort of businesses have to follow - rather than legislation banning them? No one is saying animal abuse is not a problem, but its quite amazing how quickly this legislation has gone into effect when you look at it versus all of the other things that need to be addressed - child abuse, education, veterans' issues, the economy.
I think that this issue is being looked at with a bias natural to anyone who loves or hates something - in this case animals.
I I couldn't have said it better myself, so I am not gonna try. You made every point I was wanting to make... I agree with you 100%!

Comment: I think pet rental is rediculous! Who in the world would go out and rent a dog for a couple of hours. How inhumane!!! And.... for you, the person who said once all the children of the world are housed, fed ect and that we should have more important things to do than worry about animals... you should be checked into the nearest mental hospital for not having a conscience. God created all animals big and small and I guess you don't know what that means. I hope that Karma for you comes around a little sooner than expected.

Something is wrong with you if you would wish harm on a human over his/her disagreement with you that dogs are not harmed by renting them.
Please go see a mental health professional. They are just animals for goodness sake.
Comment: Renting a pet is ridiculous. Animals are not a piece of property, like a car, house, boat etc. They are live beings with feelings. We have stooped so low, and put such a low value on life, that we have come to this. The only possible positive thing about this, is it is preferable to euthanizing them. Support the SPCA and HSUS, you contributions are tax deductible, and you are literally saving lives.

So, since people pay to see zoo animals - is that criminal too?
Geez, you animal lover types are really overboard.....I do not support being cruel or harmful, but ANIMALS ARE NOT THE EQUIVALENT OF PEOPLE WITH FUR/FEATHERS AND FOUR LEGS.
Cut it out already.
This is crazy. Animals are not property that you can just savor for a while and then get rid of. What about the aniamal's welfare? The people running these operations are sick and the people who 'rent-a-pet' need to take up a nice hobby like pet rocks. They don't deserve to have animals in their possession.
Buzzardtaco, that's more harmful than anything. U go pet and visit with the dog and then it sits in a cage waiting to be adopted and never is a likely 9 times out of 10 it gets put down. Yea, sounds lovely. Theres also a big difference between going to a shelter and petting an animla and getting to take it to the park and play frisbee or home to watch a movie and hangout and go for walks. It's your dog while u have it but u don't have to worry about neglecting it do to time constraints.
I read that they live in cage-free environments. Guys, to me, this may seem a little low or cruel on the surface, but what are the alternatives. People benefit from contact with animals, and vice versa...so what is the problem? There are therapy animals that go to hospitals daily ...are we gonna outlaw that too? Who knows, maybe the "meaningful relationships" created between the dog and the people in the hospital might cause mental damage to the both of them...
All of you naysayers are way off base. Let's say you are a dog, (and some of you probably are). Would you rather live in a depressing, concrete-slabbed shelter situation awaiting the inevitable doom, or would you rather spend time with successful, friendly, and lonely people who can fully appreciate your time and presence? Some of you shortsighted types are right, the dogs cannot speak for themselves. If they could, however, I am sure the vast majority of them would tell you to mind your own business, they've got a pretty sweet deal going. Plus look at the joy these dogs bring people. Why couldn't I rent out a pup for an hour or two if it will help me while I'm out macking the babes? It makes me look like a good guy (I am).
And you mention the economically useful lifespan. Seven years. What is the big deal? Think about it. Most of these dogs have to be around 2 years old, so they aren't all spazzy when out with strangers. Add on another seven years, and that makes them nine years old. In dog years, that 63!! Face it folks, that's old. You can't be putting out an old, musty product to your clientele. Most humans retire in that timeframe. Addtionally, when is the last time you thought to yourself, "Wow, I would really love to hang out with some OLD people this weekend." Put you hand down, Felda. Things that are old are also unnerving. Its science. And you can't argue with science. If you still aren't convinced, then step up. Stop raving like lunatics and go out and adopt all the dogs that would otherwise be euthanized, or sent off to these rentals companies. No? Can't do it? Then here is an even better idea, stop yapping about things just so you can be seen or heard. Either step up, or shut up. I'm not adopting these dogs. However, if someone finds a way to prevent a crummy, short life for them, and in the process puts some coin in their pocket, then God bless 'em. You may not like their method, but at least they did something, which NONE of you can say.
I have adopted animals so you stop yapping
Yeah.....I'm sure you do. Convenient isn't it?
Pet renting? Now I've heard everything. This is horrific! Money is the motive here and nothing else. What's next? Rent -A-Kid? Rent-A-Spouse? Totally gross. Thank God for PETA.
you should watch the Penn and Teller episode on PETA...you won't be thanking "God" for 'PETAthe wonderful then...'
Rent-a-kid then....what's the difference between foster care? renting a child or the big brother/sister programs??? they all get bounced around....uh whatever...this is silly....
I guess you can't really expect nothing else than small VERY narrow minded people
Coming from a vegetarian....dog lover and owner....
Rent A Kid may not be such a bad idea. If you've watched "The Baby Borrowers" on NBC, you can see how all these teens who thought they couldn't wait to have kids changed their minds after having them for 3 days straight. Maybe we wouldn't have so much child abuse.
Are you kidding me? People have something against saving animals from the pound who were going to be put down? You give them at least a few more good years before, at worst, they end up right back where they started. And how is this promoting the idea of "disposable pets." Does dating promote the idea of "disposable girl/boyfriends"? Crusaders need something to do I guess.
Well, what is the rent-a-center for pets but another pound. They never get a forever home, and the "pound owners" actually get paid to rent out their dogs. They're disposable, because who rents them when they are old and lame, or provide care if they get cancer? Odds are, when they are not marketable, they are put down too.
I don't know what you do for dating, but where I am from when you "rent" a date it is a little different than dating. And unless Pretty Woman was a true story, that would make the "rented date" disposable.
You're obviously aware of the internet so maybe you'll also be aware of the many internet-dating services available which are not free. And I don't think every girl on there is a pro.
Renting a dog for a day and having someone come in to take care of your dog are far from the same. The poor dog that gets rented out goes somewhere different everyday and knows nothing of a a normal life. If someone comes to take care of your dog, it's the same person every day and they have a full time home and full time family. I'm sure the rented dogs are loved and well cared for, but it's wrong. They deserve a normal life just like my dog and all of the others out there as well.
Please read the story again. The dog has a permanent home with owners. The renters - no more than 5 per pet - schedule time to spend with the animal, pick it up, then bring it back to it's permanent home. It isn't getting handed around day by day to a new home like a DVD from the corner rental store. The renters go through an application process and a lengthy orientation where they are introduced to the dog and Flex Pets makes sure everything is going to work out BEFORE the renter is allowed to take the dog off premises.
It's a lot like if you owned the dog but every once in awhile your sister or your dad or your cousin came and spent the day with it - taking it to the park, playing, grooming, hanging out. Except that these renters are paying for the privilege of doing so, which helps make sure the dogs are well cared for, that Flex Pets has the money to continue to vette its renters so well, and the owner gets to make a little profit for coming up with the business model.
The American dream. Made sweeter because many of these animals were rescued from shelters to become the recipients of so much love.
Until animal rights activists get involved and call it an outrageous situation, a tragedy....
PETA... People Eating Tasty Animals...Where does it stop? There are those out there who say vegetables are living creatures and we shouldn't eat them or use them in the manner that we do. There are extremes in this world and this is one of those extremes.
A dog is a dog and that's all. One who is cruel to animals should be treated as a criminal...period, but to blatantly say that renting pets is cruel is not fair. If so then Hollywood should be banned from renting animals for their movies. I shouldn't have to pay for my fishing license either as I'm essentialy renting the fish when I practice catch and release.
I'm hearing that it would be better that these animals were euthanized rather than bring some joy into someone's life even though it is for a brief period once a month. Can PETA prove to me that the animals pshyce is harmed...doubtful.
Don't get me wrong, I feel that all species should be treated with respect but animals are not the same as people. We are the dominant species and that is the way it is. We as the dominant species should not be cruel to animals and those that are should be dealt with accordingly.
When we have the dominant species killing each other in the name of religion or a certain political belief than that certainly does not elevate our standing as a species.
Any means to rescue and rehome animals should be encouraged. These animals are still adoptable, and in the meantime are well-cared for and taken for walks by customers who care enough to pay for the privilege. In NYC this is an especially needed resource, much like other shelters that rely on volunteers to walk the dogs, show them a fun time, before being returned to the kennel.
It depends on how the program is run, I guess. If these animals are adopable, and the money all goes towards care for the animals, or a charity to fund other shelters, then fine. It IS like the foster program, a bit. And a good idea to make money for shelters. I don't have enough information on the topic. But I would bet that the animals receive minimal care, and the "rental owners" make the money for themselves, In that case, they should be ashamed. Mostly I wonder what happens when the pet is not cute enough to be rented out anymore.
Playing with a dog (or a cat) and owning a dog are two very different experiences. Most of the fun of having a pet is learning the animal's personality and his quirks, the things that make him happy, and the way he loves you more than anyone else in the world. That takes months of daily togetherness. You can't get that from renting a pet.

How is this any different than how the government sets up custody of children?
Why not volunteer at a shelter instead? The Humane Society has "cat buddies" and "dog buddies" programs that allow a person to pet and play with the animals a couple times a month...free of charge!
so they ban dog rentals today, tomorrow it will be feed lease's on horse's
