the most disgusting legal enterprise I have ever heard of, I am glad they are doing thing in government to change that. Those of you who dont think there is anything wrong with this should be ASHAMED of yourselves, as should the woman who is making money off these poor creatures.
Rachel PPC had it right - if you want to love animals and cant afford it or cant make the time commitment, do something MORAL & go help out at a shelter - they are always looking for animal lovers to walk dogs etc
Why not volunteer at a shelter instead? There are "cat buddies" and "dog buddies" programs at your local Humane Society...you can pet and play with the animals for no charge!
landofaus U sound ridiculous. They deserve better?? So is better sitting in a cage until it's time to be euthanized because the previous owner couldn't care for them 24/7. or whatever the reason. What about dog sitters, doggie daycares, family and friends, hospitals using them to help kids and elderly recover. Landofaus it's callus and stupid to think the alternative is better 4 these dogs. Is it better for a dog to be loved by no one than by several people. People aren't renting dogs to look cool, people are working longer hours, living in non dog friendly housing, or just not capable of taking care of them, but are dog lovers and want to spend time with them. Some of these dogs have it better than a majority of youth in this country. If someone can pay almost $100.00 to rent a dog 4 a few hours that dog is likely living a high life many of us will never experience. And to the idiot that made the comment about someone renting a dog to fight, that's ridiculous. People fight dogs to win and make money, they train those dogs and do horrible things to them, i'm pretty sure the dog renting people might catch on to something like that. People who do fight their dogs aren't likely to rent one unless they fit the bill of dumbest criminal EvER! U gotta take the dog back and I'm sure the people or one of the other renters that actually love the dog won't be to pleased..
What next? Grandparent, sibling or child rentals? I know I sound extreme, but I can't help but think what these poor pets go through being bounced from one person to the next. I own a dog and she is rescued from a shelter...we really needed to provide stability in her life for her to become the happy, loving, playful pet she is today.
No, people renting won't be next, because there is a HUGE diffrence between humans and animals!!! Why can't you people understand that?
Kj76 - thats right Kj - some humans are just to self-centered and unlikeable to want to rent
You missed my point, moody. Humans have free will and rights that dogs don't.
Exactly, which is why they should be treated properly by those with free will and rights.
I still find this very upsetting. Dogs may be pack animals, but these people aren't really their pack. They are visitors that come and take them away from what they may understand as "their" territory. The dog may even feel uncomfortable being in the other creature's (a.k.a the renter's) territory! How do you know that the dog won't develop a nervous or stress disorder from being worried about another creature attacking it for being in it's territory? A dog won't accept a new pack member unless they spend a long, CONTINUED time learning to trust it. For all it knows, it is in another pack's territory and might be injured or killed for trespassing. If you really want to use the "pack animal" defense, you're gonna have to look back at how wolves act, because they're the only ancestors that still practice territory and pack formation that isn't forced.
Sooo..... if dogs are pack animals, why don't we be kind and just let them run in packs out in the countryside? As God meant them to be. You miserably cruel people who keep pack animals inside and away from their pack friends should be caged!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You really are not making any sense with this comment. Stop being dumb
I don't see why people are in such an outrage over all of this. Firstly, what about all the foster kids, and kids from split parents that get shuffled around. They are the ones that people should be concerned about. Also, this doesn't seem to differ too much from all of the doggie daycares out there, and there doesn't seem to be much concern over them. Lastly, isn't it better for people to share the pets, then to get a pet and decide they can't care for it on a 24/7 basis and wind up abandoning it on the street or sending it to a shelter where it may be uthanized? Let's focus on more important issues out there folks!
Doggie daycare is different too, because it's your pet and you bring it home at night. What about when the dog is 11 years old, and blind? who is going to "rent" her then? She suits in the pet center, or is euthanized too. I don't agree with people who get a dog and then just dump it when they have a baby or just don't find them convenient anymore (sad truth is that people do that with kids too), and it all boils down to irresponsibilty of the person. My problem with rent a pet is you could volunteer your time or money instead of paying to parade around a cute dog.
There are foster pets too! No one has a problem with foster pets, when shelters get overcrowded, people open their homes until the pets are adopted. But renting a pet, that is plain weird! How about rent a baby? Now how about foster a baby. Two totally different things!
I am a big time animal lover (my husband and I share our home with 4 dogs and a rabbit) but I don't have a problem with this. According to the article, they stay with a primary caretaker (who I imagine the dogs view as their owner) They are well taken care of. They would have been euthanized otherwise. The people who "rent them, shower them with attention and have actually taken classes on dog care. Where's the downside? How is this different than a therapy dog? Dogs love people and they love to have jobs. I don't think any dog would dislike the job of providing a little furry companionship to someone who isn't able to share their whole life with a pet.
mmm whatever happened to the "it takes a village to raise a child".....does this not apply...we are so set in our North American mind set that we must have a two opposit sex parents that we can not even bare the thought of more than two persons caring for somethign or someone.....
applies to dogs, children...whatever....
Don't you tell me tribes or epople that live with multiple parental figures don't grow up to be extraordinary people....think twice here...it applies... don't be so narrow minded!
a shelter would be better than the emotional part of this, @ least there they have other dogs to talk to, and they dont have to wonder why nobody will keep them.
As pointed out elsewhere, shelters tend to be overcrowded and understaffed, as well as underfunded. This entreprenuer found a working business model whereby the animals have permanant homes as well as increased socialization opportunities without the problems of overcrowding or understaffing.
Personally, I fear too many of us are getting hung up on the use of the term "rental" and not looking at the specifics of the actual program. Because we tend to anthropomorphize (apply human characteristics to) our pets, we are offended when we feel others are objectifying them (removing those human characterisitics).
Yep. Until the shelter people kill them. Yeah, until then.
This is stupid. Dogs especially are pack animals. From the dog's point of view he has a bigger human pack. Emotional trauma to the dog my ass. These rental dogs probably have more interesting and varied lives that one owned by one owner. People seriously need to stop anthropomorphizing.
you do not know what you are talking about. Dogs need to bond with a pack leader. socializing is fine, but without a pack leader they are not happy animals.
They're will always be a "pack leader"....personality, one person will have a "stronger" more assertive personality and will be viewed by the dog as it's leader....you don't think so???
No, bad idea!!! Pets are not like a couch or a big screen TV you'd rent. Pets have feelings and they adapt and attached to humans who take them in immediately. This is a cruel and inhumane idea and the company should be shut down long before it opens!!
This is sad. I love dogs, but to compare a dog to a human child is a little of your freakin rocker Yurfulla, please don't have kids. We maybe the only beings that think long-term. A dog lives in the present and won't be harmed by seeing different people different days, we as humans do as well. We don't have just 1 loved one, we have a whole system of family and friends. I live in a not so great neighborhood I see stray dogs roaming the streets that ar skin and bones, dogs tied up in their backyards with barely room to move, and there are the thousands of dogs euthanized daily, but this is so cruel. Wake up u dog huggers!! This is one of the best things to happen to the dog community. U know how many people go out and get dogs just to realize they can't take care of them 24/7 and abandon them in the streets or at a shelter where they sit in cages till it's time to kill them. WAKE UP PEOPLE! Don't get me started on the fact that our own children bounce from home to home foster family to foster family abused, molested, and worst. The fact that people think more about the mental state of freakin dogs than human children is actually sickening. I don't see anyone debating about the mental status of cows, but I guess that's cuz they don't do tricks, lay in bed, and they're just not as adorable.

Is there anything people won't do for a buck ? Offer me a deal such as renting pets and I bet you'll hit your face on my fist because you people are that callus and stupid. Please keep your ignorance to yourselves and leave the animals alone. They deserve better than what you people offer, so LEAVE EM ALONE YOU FOOLS...................................................Aus
This is disgusting....absolutely repulsive. Never have I seen such a cockamamy scheme whose soul purpose is to line the pockets.
IF your life is not condusive to owning and caring for an animal, why not take some of your spare time and volunteer at one of the many shorthanded shelters and rescues in this country?? Those volunteers NEVER turn away an extra set of hands, and because they're so overun, it's practically impossible to give adequate 1-on-1 attention to the animals they house. Considering the sheer number of euthanasias every year, you would think that people would be more willing to lend a hand for FREE, as opposed to paying $99.95 a month to some money-hungry dickhole so you can walk a dog for a few hours.
Newsflash folks: You can do that at your local shelter all day long for FREE, while providing exercise and 1-on-1 social activity for an abandoned pet.
I hope this gets shut down.
One of the other commenters mentioned the way rental cars are treated vs. cars a person owns - perhaps that is the reason the rates are set so high, to give the 'renter' a better sense of the animals intrinsic value so they will treat it with greater care.
I think this is sad - I'm sure those dogs are happier being loved by their "multiple owners" than mine are spending large portions of their day kenneled while my husband and I work and the kids are in school.
Maybe so, until they are returned to the pet center or wherever for long stretches of time, or get too old to be cute and fluffy anymore and are put down. Pets should be a member of your family, not something to toss when it is not pretty or doesn't fit into your lifestyle anymore.
No....they are confused. There's no established pack order, and that means unhappy dogs.
And, if you cannot care for your dogs than you shouldn't have them. A pet is a privelage. They have needs and requirements and if you can't provide you should rehome them with someone who can. Some of those many requirements are exercise and socialization, as well as mental stimulation. It's difficult to provide all those things with a 9-5 job and a family to maintain.
kj76 - perhaps NOT the "same" but definatly some emotional needs. PLEASE please do not ever have a pet - obviously you wouldnt make a good dog owner. EVERYONE will be happy with you spending all that time with your kids, since obviously we all hope you have bred yourself and are instilling your beautiful spirit in some mini kj76s.
It is wrong to treat the innocent - be they children or pets - like disposable items. Are you as careful with a rental car as you ar with your own? If you are then you are an exception, and I cringe to think about the kind of people who rent pets. Its a commitment abosolutely, and you can either do it or you cant.
Actually, I've raised or helped raise many pets in my life. They were all well treated and lived long, happy lives.
And not that it's any of your business, but I'm raising my children to repsect all life- but I'm also instilling the proper perspective, that human life is the most precious and valuable of all.
Why not volunteer at an animal shelter? I live in a house now and have since adopted 2 shelter pets, but that's what I did when I live in DC and in a pet free building. I volunteered as a dog walker for animals at the humane society. If a dog doesn't fit in with your lifestyle, then you don't get a dog. Renting a pet is the weirdest thing I ever heard. So if I want a baby, and want to "give it back" at the end of the day, because my career doesn't have time for it, should I open a Rent-A-Baby center?
Those seem to be the latest accessory to celebs these days, pets and babies. And everyone who is flashy and cold and has no sense of self want to also have the latest trend, and no responsibility. Sure I am generalizing, but that is how I see someone who rents a dog, when they could volunteer at an animal shelter for free or give $200 a month to an animal charity. Get over yourselves, rich people.
You people complaining that this is cruel are stupid and obviously know nothing about canine behavior. Dogs are pack animals. From their perspective they just get to spend time with a larger human "pack". These rental dogs have more interesting and vaired lives than one who sits at home most of the day by themselves. People seriously need to stop anthropomorphizing.
I completely agree with what you've said.
Think about what they tell you about socializing your dog........
I completely agree, dogs get a bigger pack and become more friendly as a result. I have a 6 lbs dog and we bring her everywhere and let just about anyone pick her up, play with her, pet her...etc. As a result she is better behaved, aware of her surroundings and who to trust.
I think pet renting is ok, I mean so long as they are well treated, why not? These dogs feel like they have a huge pack, a huge family if you will with more love than just one person could ever give....who doesn't want that?
Another thing, I was reading about why people don't go to the SPCA or Humain Society to volunteer their time with those pets? The answer is often that people are afraid of "reality" of those places...well let me tell you something, would you want to go volunteer your time with a dog that has probably had minimal training, obidience problems, behaviour problems, etc, wether big or small issues, they are likely to have been given away for those reasons. The reality is, the less training the less exposure they have to people the bigger threat....Animals are unpredictable...That's probably the "reality" they are facing.
