Comment: Good grief, the guy is one of th biggest grafters in the senate and Newsweek wants to white wash him?
Perhaps Mr. Hopfinger could go with Senator Stevens to Ethics 101.

Comment: 84 and still in the senate?? power is so hard to let go, isn't it?? Corrupt to like most politicians, and often republican politicians.
    Put him in jail!

"Comment: If he did the crime then he must do the time. This from a Republican who believes in truth and honor as most republicans do. I bet he wishes he would have just put a few hundred thousand in his freezer. That seems to work for some."

Everybody loves cold cash :D Guess it's just that culture of corruption, getting exposed. It was bound to happen sooner or later.

Comment: No matter how many good things he has done for Alaska, he still can't break the law. He is no beginner. He knows the rules, but as many politicians his power got the best of him. Sure the Alaskans like him because he has made all taxpayers pay for the lavish projects that benefited only the Alaskans. He is a criminal and should go to jail.

Comment: there's no doubt in my mind that the stories about mr. ted stevens are true and that he has done wonderful things for the state of alaska and its residents, but this article seems to lean a little too far in his favor. there is no mention of his famed "bridges to nowhere" for which he is INFAMOUS, or any of his atrocious pork barrel spending habits. this man may have contributed to his state at one time, but from what ive read about him, i think its time ted stevens passed the torch on to somebody more reliable

You can see who is giving money to your favorite politician. Hope they are honest.... Not

Comment: Just a thought, I am guessing that in November there will be a record number of people voting straight democrat ticket. Not that Republicans are bad just that they decided that cowboy and gready.were admirable traites. Just like teenagers they thought they were indistructable. As a former teenager I now know that I am not. Too bad politions can't seem to learn that.

Comment: Former Alaskan here, where there is smoke there is fire. It has been going on for years and years. He is old and just got careless. Or as they say maybe he wanted to be caught. Slime. Republican slime.

Comment: Where would you expect to find Stevens right this moment. Is he hiding his head in SHAME/ No! He is on the floor of our unite States Senate as I write this comment pushing for legislation for the Oil Companies. Who has bribed him this time for his betrayal of the Alaskan citizens? when the supoenas start flying and the depositions start, we will find out where this will lead. How many Republicans have been bribed? If i was the Prosecutor, i would start my invesigation by viewing which Senators have taken the floor in the last few week to push for the Oil Companies.

Comment: What adds insult to injury is that the Republican Stevens sold out for so little. I would not object to paying 1 million dollars a year to our congressmen if I thought it would ensure more honest government. In the long run we would save money instead of wasting it on earmarks.

Comment: Young Hickory, hold of for a little while, this may be just the tip of the iceberg. For Stevens to do something so easily detected may show that corruption is commonplace in Alaska. Don't be suprised if Senator Kyle's name doesn't show up. I'm not againsy Oil exploration myself, but I've always been surprised that someone from a state like Alaska could be anything but pro environmet. I guess I've got the wrong impression of Alaskans. Are they just a continuation of these pioneers and Gold searchers that cared little for the land except what could make out of it. Both Senators have been out in front on a daily basis on the Senate floor pushing for Drilling in the Alaskan Wilderness.

When you find that the person who pressed for legistration that help the Billionaire Oil Executives and at the same time is bribed by them, you realize that they never cared about the people who they represent.

I suppose that any day now ted Stevens will be too ill to testify.

Comment: I'm scratching my head wondering how this could happen. The Justice Department re-structuring overseen by Mr. Gonzales was supposed to prevent any such prosectution of Republicans.

Comment: Does it mar a legasy or represent the first information on Alaska's Republican Corruption? When you consider how overtly Stevens was to accept this bribe from the Oil company, it should make you wonder how commonplace the practice. one must wonder whether senator Kyle has also accepted money or other valuable gifts from the same crooks.

Ted Stevens, a man called mister Honesty by his Republican Collegues, has been on the senate floor everyday for the past two weeks begging for more drilling rights for the industry he been accepting big money from.
