you are allowing McCain to instill the same fear Bush did about this Iraq war. I am voting for and financially supporting Obama.

I like McCains comment "I know how to win wars" What wars has he won? I did not know he was commanding armies from the Hanoi Hilton for 5 years. He is lying about Obama and as President he will lie to the American people just as his mentor George Bush has done.

Over the past 150 years, oil companies and prospectors have drilled more than two million wells around the world in hopes of striking oil. Many of the early wells turned out to be dry

I hate people saying Obama doesn't have enough experience to be president yet Mccain does. Hey republicans, you know who else had "experience", George Bush. And he ran our country so well(and for those idiots who don't understand, I'm being sarcastic). So clearly, "experience" doesn't define a good president whatsoever. And for all of you who still support Bush, there's no reasoning with you because your all morons.

Senator John McCain has an obligation to temper heroism with clean campaign not endless negative attacks on Senator Barack Obama. I am unable to differentiate between when McCain is throwing dirts and when he really wants to campaign. Experience is worthwhile when it is used for the benefit of others. McCain should communicate to the electorate and stop talking to ghosts. We are human beings. Goodluck Diigbo, New York. So far it looks like McCain is sinking.

WoW! Everytime anything comes up that shows the real OBAMA, all we here is excuses. Did he or did he not say he liked the idea of taxing dirty energy? The answer is YES!!! It does not matter if he only said it 1 time or 50 times the FACT IS he said it. So McCain's ad is TRUE!!!. You guys are so syupid that you want to put someone in office that believes we have 57 states and that Hawaii was bomb by a nuke? This guy is so inexperience he should not have even been on the ticket. Hillary would make a better President than either. But the OBAMA news channels wont let that happen. You guys are so star struck with Obama you refuse to see the light and we will lose this election as we have the last 2. What has Obama stood for. He can't take a stand on anything except taxes(more of them), He has 7 different answers to why he could not visit the wounded troups. Or why hes friends with radical people including somebody set bombs off in the US and is still proud of it. Obama could not get a security clearance due to the people he is associated with. And you people want him as President. He is a huge mis-stake and we will pay for it in the end unless Hillary can overturn it at the convention. WAKE UP PEOPLE

    • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 07/31/2008 2:22:12 PM

So you must also believe that McCain's recent announcement that he would raise Social Security taxes is also definitive.

      • Posted By: Obamasuks1 @ 07/31/2008 2:33:20 PM

You must mean Obama. Hes wanting to raise taxes on Social Security, death tax, capital gain tax, income tax, utility taxes, phone taxes, oh yeah and tax the big bad oil companies so they will lower the price at the pump, and speaking of that he wants to raise gas taxes. Theres not a Tax Obama wont raise. McCain said he does not support raising taxes. If Hillary can't knock Obama out at convention, yes I am voteing for McCain. Can't afford Obama's tax increases.

        • Posted By: Twhit1007 @ 08/01/2008 2:42:36 AM

Boy, Republicans are so funny. So lets see how Bush handled things with his no raising taxes policy. He gave our entire surplus that Clinton built to the richest 1% to stimulte the economy because of an extremely mild recession due to the internet bubble burst. Boy our economy has been doing really well since then! He gutted out our entire government system, placed everyone with conflicts of interest in all his high level department positions rendering the entire system dysfunctional. Now the Republicans can say "See! See how your government can't do anything! We should give more power to the private sector!" The whole system is designed to privatize everything and deregulate everything so that our oligarchic democracy can become even more entrenched.
Our government is for and by the people. Our elected officials have the power to create a LARGE government that could actually work and do good for ALL citizens of the USA. It would take a lot of work, a lot of money, and a lot of faith. But it would be a government for all of us. I am more than happy to pay more income taxes and sales tax and all sorts of others taxes IF they actually would go towards programs and systems that would help our country. But this is not the case.
You silly Republicans are raising the " (Fill in the blank) will raise your taxes!" banner yet again to scare your easily swayed constituents. Who is paying the bill for Bush's war in Iraq? Oh yeah, Saudi Arabia and China. And what will happen when they finally collect on the hundreds of billions of dollars that we owe them? Hmmmm....higher taxes sure aren't sounding too bad now are they?

        • Posted By: rc-in-mo @ 07/31/2008 2:47:18 PM

Better check your facts-dear. Obama has not suggested raising taxes on social security! He has suggested NOT taxing people on social security who make less than $50,000. He has suggested taxing incomes over $250,000 for social security! The other taxes you mention are figments of your imagination! Clinton and Obama stand the SAME on everything except on theie health care ideas!! Check it out!!

Hey jerk, when you go on flight after flight make speech after speech meet leader after leader, on no sleep and don't make a minor mistake...then you can talk...ok? Oh and I think McCain leads in flubs and dumbasss comments like 1 billion to 1. Obama was a friggin college professor who taught constitutinal law; he knows more about the US than you and your entire ancestry...57 states, give me a break...shyadep!

        • Posted By: Obamasuks1 @ 07/31/2008 3:13:25 PM

Better check the stats on that one. I have seen many dumbass college professors. How does that make them able to run a hotdog stand much less a country. Most professors and teachers are not the brightest in there field. If they were they would be practicing attorneys and business people. Those that can't make it in the real world teach. Sad but true

          • Posted By: rdoudna @ 07/31/2008 5:27:09 PM

I bet you win every argument you get in with such stereo typical remarks. Harvard professors are anything but stupid. They teach because they enjoy the academic life stlye and freedom to pursue projects of their choosing. It has nothing to do with their ability or inability to make it in the "real world". By the way, what is the "real world"? How many people are employed in the education field? Is this not the real world too?

          • Posted By: raddave @ 07/31/2008 4:34:05 PM

Obama did practice law and taught at the same time. So I guess he can do and teach as well

      • Posted By: kreid2k @ 07/31/2008 2:36:16 PM

This is so sad. You have to be either a racist or have some real insecurities with a minority running the country to stick by an old, washed up can't raise his hands, can't find anything better to say than gripe on Obama because he is full of jealousy. As a country, we should be PROUD of what Obama has accomplished and allow him to make the country glorious and a leader of the world as it should be; only he can bring us all together. WE LOVE YOU!!!

        • Posted By: Obamasuks1 @ 07/31/2008 3:01:29 PM

Why is it when someone does not approve of Obama they are considered a racist. I am not a racist. I could care less what color his skin is. My concern is he has no morrals and can not stand on any issue. He votes present on anything that could be considered contaversal. Even in College he would not write opinons that would have a stand on anything. He has had 145 days experience in Congress, friends with terrorist and radical raciest.( if anyone is raciest he is), knows nothing about the Military, BUT if he is elected we are to believe the sun will shine, butterflys will flurish, and we will all sit down and sing cumbyya? GET REAL. We elect a President to run the country and protect us. If he was pushed by another country like China he would drop to his knees just like Carter did and give everything away and talk to everyone. Where did that get us....can you say 22% interest rates and gas shortages. You should not elect someone just because he makes you feel good. Ask the Germans how that worked out with Hitler.

          • Posted By: 2cents @ 07/31/2008 3:20:00 PM

You ask us to GET REAL? Most of Obama's supporters are already realists. If you spent a little more time looking for facts and not soundbites, didn't get your history in the form of chain emails, and actually knew something about the current state of the world you too would be a realist. But you have chosen to stubbornly repeat all the crap that you've heard in chat rooms because you have allowed yourself to be ruled by fear. Some people who opperate this way are racist - so don't be surprised when you're labelled one.

No one thinks the sun will shine if Obama is elected. The GOP has taken us into dark territory and it's gonna take a lot longer than 4-8 years to pull us out. At least Obama has demonstrated critical thinking and diplomacy - something that our next leader is gonna need in spades! And so what if the citizens and leaders of other countries think he's a rock star? That should make diplomacy even that much more fruitful for us if they all love him don't ya think?. Or would you rather send an ambassador who despises the rest of the world the way Bush sent that anti UN neo-con Bolton to represent us? Those policies where disastrous. Oh yeah, China already owns us so I don't know how you think McCain would push back any different then Obama. Now go learn something useful.

Your post makes me sad. It barely contains the slightest grain of truth, but that doesn't stop you from boiling over from disagreement to hatred. I sincerely hope that most voters are not as pathetically uninformed as you are.

              1) "Voting Present". Voting present is a normal political position in the Illinois stage government. It doesn't mean that you won't take a stand - in fact, it is often used when a legislator works across-the-aisle (which Barack was reknowned for) to give cover to the -opposing- party. The perfect example is the time he voted for Choice legislation and voted "present". He wasn't afraid to be known as pro-choice - he had been very vocal about it for years. Voting "present" was a strategy endorsed by Planned Parenthood and they requested that Obama vote that way. The bill passed.

              2) As far as being "pushed" and caving in - if you don't know that that's not Obama's way, then you haven't been following the primaries and the general election campaign.

              3) As far as taking stands on both sides in Law School - well, I have a surprise for you: that's what you're supposed to do. I was a national-level debater in my youth, and I was trained by being required to argue both sides of a topic.

So far, you have posted not one single rational drawback about electing Obama. And you didn't mention his strongest point: he is probably the smartest person ever to run for the Presidency of the United States.

      Obamasuksi,,
Did you not read the transcript of this story? Obama did not say he was going to raise taxes on dirty energy, not even once. See this is the problem with far too many McCain fans, you feel the need to embellish or take things out of context. When you do this the only thing you proved sadly is that you're not very bright. I'm not saying you're stupid but I think you think we are. In reality, most of the people who make comments on message boards of this type are in general much better informed than the average joe blow on the street. Occassionally people like yourself forget that. So instead of making arguments about Obama's few radical friends, and silly references to obvious innocent misstatements (are you suggesting someone who graduate near the top of his class at Harvard is stupid?) why don't you ante up and make some strong arguments for McCain? Save the "radical friend" argument for your neighbor.

    • Posted By: metzlerd @ 07/31/2008 3:20:49 PM

      Please don't talk about stupid.
McCains ad says E-L-E-C-T-R-I-C-I-T-Y. Electricity is NOT dirty energy. Not everybody's electricity is coming from dirty energy, and more importantly it is possible to switch to clean energy.

  • Posted By: alessan @ 08/01/2008 2:00:58 AM

Obama doesn't have to raise electricity in NYC, Con Edison has already done that, 14%, with little use of the air conditionor in the Summer, my bill was an additional $100.00 for July. NYC needs Federal oversight of electricity, "Wall Street , and Insurance companies. Not to mention NYC has increased the water bills, and
to think about 5 or 6 years ago water was free.

    I can tell you this:

Foreign presidents and dignitaries would have NOT stood beside a celebrity at high level press conferences being broadcast worldwide. They did stand beside Obama talking about promising new leadership in America.

Perhaps they could speak honestly and without bias as they are not afflicted by the decease of racism I see raising its ugly head here.

    • Posted By: Marquette70 @ 07/31/2008 11:10:59 PM

They stood with Jimmy Carter. The people of whom you speak would stand with any Democrat.

      • Posted By: Mimi13 @ 08/01/2008 1:05:32 AM

Most of the heads of state and national leaders who stood with Obama were not in power (or even in politics) when Jimmy Carter was president. Your statement makes no sense. I truly hope -- for the sake of Marquette's reputation -- that you're not really a graduate.

      • Posted By: Twhit1007 @ 08/01/2008 12:40:41 AM

Really? Which of the world leaders that Obama stood with actually stood with Carter? Can you actually give some names? Or are you just being an idiot?

  • Posted By: buckeyecal @ 07/31/2008 4:50:31 PM

So Obama did make a comment that was maybe taken out context, but so was the case when McCain, when asked during the primary how long we might need to remain in Iraq stated it might be a long time, maybe 100 years. He was referring to where the US has held long term relationships: Phillipines, Japan, Germany, etc., while the countries got going and stable. Yet Obama played that line to the hilt. Is this only fair for Obama, and when McCain does the same it is not fair? Does the Emperor have any clothes?

    • Posted By: Twhit1007 @ 08/01/2008 12:36:58 AM

At a town hall meeting in New Hampshire, a crowd member asked McCain about a Bush statement that troops could stay in Iraq for 50 years.
"Maybe 100," McCain replied. "As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed, it's fine with me and I hope it would be fine with you if we maintain a presence in a very volatile part of the world where al Qaeda is training, recruiting, equipping and motivating people every single day."
"Out of context" is used way too much nowadays. How is this out of context? He says he would stay in 100 years if needed. What really gets me is that he says as long "As long as Americans are not being injured or harmed or wounded or killed". Well, that is happening right now. Sooo.....Does this mean we would stay in Iraq for 100 years as long as nobody gets hurt? Then I guess he supports a withdrawl. Or does this mean that we should stay in Iraq for 100 years until nobody is being hurt? Not going to happen!
His statement makes no sense, as is the case with almost anything that comes out of his mouth.

Just remember....John McCain does not speak for the campaign of John McCain...
If Republicans can actually get this guy elected then there is absolutely no hope for America...
It is purely astonishing that he is still polling well...baaa baaa conservative sheep.

The fact remains that not even FACTCHECK knows what Obama will do in time with raising energy taxes. [These ''known knowns''of vintage Rumsfeld-speak now utiilzed by the Fourth Estate, should be a more patent focus of their digging, which has become disconcerting of late,as it has refused to ''factcheck'' other areas of Obamas candidacy that find these very ''facts''wanting]. The New York Times stated yesterday that Obama was ''immediately offered tenure''at Chicago University as a professor as a means for the Gray Lady to further burnish Obama. Well was he or wasen't he? The answer is now no. [No retraction at this time by the Times]. The danger here is that the MSM is now acting as an Obama cheerleading team of the most disgraceful caliber, including our own NEWSWEAK.
More. Todays ATLANTIC Magazine[of a more libertarian bent],regards the Washington Posts Dana Milbank as a ''proto-racist''. The reasoning here being that Milbank is black, and being of this race,is fully ''qualified''to tell anyone anywhere that accuasations of ''presumption or arrogance''on the portion of Obama critics are themselves ,racist. A patently stupid move by Milbank, who is not merely in the tank for Obama, but is expanding it into a resevoir.
Obviously, the timing of his article with Obamas ''dollar bills'' and ''Ludicris'' comments could not have come at a worse time.[''Obamas campaign''should not have dealt with the sexist, racist Ludicris. He should have stepped in himself]. The injection of race is being made by those who deny they are injecting it to begin with. The lame response by the Obama campaign to the conservative HOT AIR regarding the ''dollar''comments was disquieting,as they did not address the focus of the comment, sending up instead,a flak barrage of sturm und drang.[with McCains camp for the moment, remaining on the sidelines].
The result of this uncertainty is plain. Todays GALLUP poll shows an evaporated lead by Obama. Others[RASMUSSEN,ZOGBY], are within margins of error. USA TODAY shows an actual McCain lead. Obamas energy platform is killing him in the South, while a brand-new CNN poll again shows 70% of Americans supporting domestic exploration of natural gas and oil. The press,in their stupidity, believed that the American public in the Internet Age would not catch on. In a recent speech by Obama the video showed hundreds of assembled journalists from all media formats giving Obama a standing ovation, only deepening suspicions of this increasingly partisan and unruly discipline.[The BELMONT CLUBs Richard Fernandez displayed American trust in this vocation as ''hovering somewhere around that of a used-car salesman and a politcian'']. The ''Obama Slide',notwithstanding the press,'rolls on.

"Todays ATLANTIC Magazine[of a more libertarian bent],regards the Washington Posts Dana Milbank as a ''proto-racist''. The reasoning here being that Milbank is black. . ."

It will no doubt come as a profound shock to Dana Milbank -- not to mention his parents and his wife -- to discover at this stage of his life that he is actually black. (Have you never seen his photo in Newsweek or viewed him on TV? This is worse than a rookie mistake.)

I know it's a small thing, Lee, but when you drop a post to set the facts straight, it is best to have the facts, even the little ones. There are a few of us reading this blog who actually care about the truth. BTW, I searched the ATLANTIC online and could not find the quote you attribute to it. Not saying it doesn't exist, mind you. But it is not in the most recent entries.

I am a little lost on how the McCain ad is misleading. "McCain's new ad claims that Obama "says he'll raise taxes on electricity." That's false. Obama says no such thing."

"Obama: Well, that's clean energy, and we want to drive down the cost of that, not raise it. We need to give them subsidies so they can start developing that. What we ought to tax is dirty energy, like coal and, to a lesser extent, natural gas."

Considering that the United States produces almost 50% of its energy from coal how is that not a tax on electrcity. The affect on the consumer is the same.

Politicians say enough misleading things not to have go make up stuff.

    • Posted By: metzlerd @ 07/31/2008 10:40:10 PM

      A) Like you said, that means 50% of the electricity is not taxed. It's inaccurate. Why didn't he just say DIRTY ENERGY. Then it would be accurate.
      B) You sound like you're assuming that dirty energy can only be dirty energy. If you tax dirty energy, then you have the funds to switch to CLEAN energy.
      C) I thought there was a concept of Clean Coal. If there is, then I guess not all coal is taxed is it.

  • Posted By: metzlerd @ 07/31/2008 10:32:34 PM

McCain has no solutions, no substance, and no judgement. He insults peoples intelligence by saying idiotic things and expecting us to just believe it.
    1) Gas prices, which started rising in 2001, are high because of Obama. (It's all his fault)
    2) One of the most important issues of the day is that Obama is too popular.
    3) A good way to transition to new energy is to... Buy more oil.
    4) We'll get relief from gas prices by giving the gas companies a break on their taxes.
    5) Obama didn't go to visit injured soldiers because he couldn't bring cameras to an event that cameras are never taken anyway; yet he's already visited injured soldiers repeatedly with no press.

I understand that he didn't get the best grades in school, and intelligence may be a bit of a handicap, but this is getting rediculous!

Considering America's love of independence, we are sorely laking it when it comes to energy and fossil fuels. What I don't understand is how we Americans can fight over something that is so obvious. Alternative energy sources don't need to be a wide sweeping solution--it should be considered regionally. For example.: I live in Ohio and as far as the eye can see there is soy. and mass surplusses of it. Therefore, Ohio should use soy as part of Ohio's ethanol program--NOT CORN! States and regions that have a surplus of corn (i.e. Iowa) should use corn based ethanol more than, say, New York . Places like Chicago and the Plains should invest in wind energy, the desert region should invest in solar power, and the Gulf and Mississippi River states should have been running on hydro electricity for 20 years now if not longer. Alternative energy in this country is a disgrace. Until we are able to see the bigger picture and care about the energy crisis in places other than the gas pump we'll be left behind by England, Canada, China, and even Brazil when it comes to energy independence.

  • Posted By: uvgxg @ 07/31/2008 10:10:18 PM

McCain's new ad claims that Obama "says he'll raise taxes on electricity." That's false. Obama says no such thing.

"What we ought to tax is dirty energy, like coal and, to a lesser extent, natural gas." But that quote is out of context. Obama and Guerra are discussing possible ways to fund education. Here's the pertinent passage, in full:"

Then he say this put of context.

Guerra: Have you considered other funding sources, say taxing emerging energy forms, for example, say a penny per kilowatt hour on wind energy?

Obama: Well, that's clean energy, and we want to drive down the cost of that, not raise it. We need to give them subsidies so they can start developing that. What we ought to tax is dirty energy, like coal and, to a lesser extent, natural gas.

I find it highly hypocritical of the McCain campaign and the GOP to try to denigrate Obama by labeling him as a "celebrity." Almost 30 years ago, there was another "celebrity" candidate who had a gift for opitmism and the future, who was skilled at speaking evocatively, who connected with his audience, who spoke to the younger generation, exuded a sense of country and stood for something. That "celebrity" candidate was called the "Great Communicator." That "celebrity" was Ronald Reagan. Why was candidate Reagan called the "Great Communicator" for making a good speech and Obama is callled an "arrogant celebrity" for also making a good speech? Double standards abound.

When are you people going to wake up and realize that it is not the governments job tosolve all of our problems. It is our responsibility.. Name one thing the government has done and not made a total mess out of it. Dont't get me wrong, i don't like Johnny Mc. either, but I must vote for the lesser of the two evils.

There are those who are mad in Arkansas, Mississippi and South Carolina too, but like you, they don't seem to get that the war put us half a trill in the red. Someone is going to go in your pockets. You're not voting for Mr. Obama because folks like you can't get past calling him by his middle name. Scare and fear. But thanks for the input.

This kind of negative campaign gets this kind of reporting:

        What a strange post.

The Republican president and the Republican congress are/were the biggest spenders in the history of this nation. The war alone has put us more than $1 trillion in debt.

So, Obama will use it to provide us with health care, alternative energies and a clean environment. Seems to me that's much better than the Repubs spending it on death and destruction and the endless enrichment of their buddies - the CEOs and financial speculators.

Bleach blond hair extensions. Multiple homes. Uber designer wardrobe. $250,000 monthly credit card bills. Substance abuse problems. Barack Obama??? They must be kidding. That's Cindy McCain!

Voting FOR or AGAINST someone based on skin color is racism, PERIOD.

    • Posted By: raddave @ 07/31/2008 7:38:16 PM

racism is a belief or ideology that all members of each racial group possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially to distinguish it as being either superior or inferior to another racial group or racial groups. If someone said that he is voting for a black because blacks are superior to whites, then it would be racism.

AMEN!!! But admitting that your decision is swayed by race or insecurity is better than coming up with excuses to convince it's something else why you can't vote for him. Arrogance is the funniest persuasion and sadest- he is confident, and strong- those who say he is arrogant must want him to bow his head and say yes sir no sir or beg?? Does he not have a right to stand proud and confident?.... Hmmm.
